"What is it?"

Evelyn jumped and nearly squeaked in surprise at the deep voice coming from behind her. The rookie turned around to see the Captain before her. The young woman remembered the grand armor Gideon wore, but had forgotten how tall the Archangel was...as well as intimidating.

At his question, Evelyn nodded then her mouth slightly fell open at his next words. “Oh, that makes sense now,” The young woman replied before she gave the Captain an apologetic smile. One slip up, on the first day, yep this day would go by swimmingly for sure! Maybe she should ask if they have Google Maps here…

Realizing that the silence had gone on a little longer than what would be comfortable, Evelyn cleared her throat and asked, feeling a bit sheepish, “Um...which way is the Battlements...again?” She rubbed the back of her neck anxiously, hoping the Archangel wouldn’t smite her where she stood.

On the inside, Evelyn was cringing. If she flunked training then God might kick her out of the program altogether. ‘Okay, okay...I’ve got this!’ Her inner spirit cheered as it did a fist pump into the air. Evelyn would prove herself and become the best recruit!

Archangel Gideon

Gideon, after hearing her response, simply gave her a questioning glance. "Oh, you must be Evelyn!" he exclaimed in a moment of realization. "Right, Father said we'd have someone new show up today." Gideon then proceeded to walk in circles as he pondered how to explain things to her. He'd been here so long, he'd forgotten mortals and the recently deceased had not the ability to transport themselves to their destinations. "All you can do is walk, right," he murmured partly to himself.

"Come on, then." Gideon motioned for her to follow him. He then moved across the room and entered a hallway lined with artworks of all the Seraphs of Heaven. "These are our commanders, the Seraphs" he stated proudly as he glided down the hall. "They are the strongest of us, and work under Father's direct guidance to lead the rest of us." It may have come as a surprise to others, but not even Gideon worked directly with God. Once he arrived at the other end of the hall, he waited for Evelyn to catch up to him before moving on.

"Oh, you must be Evelyn!"

“Yep, that would be me. Fresh off the boat, or life…” Evelyn chuckled as she rocked on the heels of her armored boots. The young woman then watched the Archangel walk around in circles in deep thought. She was suddenly seized with the idea that he might be pondering about what appropriate punishment task she should be given for being late...and in the wrong place. Hopefully it wasn’t something like cleaning up the bathrooms...

"All you can do is walk, right,"

“Walk?” Evelyn repeated feeling confused at such an obvious question. “Oh, yes!” The young woman blurted out as she realized what Gideon meant. Most of the inhabitants had wings and why bother walking when you could fly around! Though, once she had wings no doubt Evelyn would become a flying hazard!

At Gideon's beckoning gestures, Evelyn made a little salute as she cheered, “Aye aye Sir, or Captain!” The young woman then followed after the Archangel, though quickly falling behind his long legged strides as she listened.

“Seraphs…” Evelyn repeated more to herself as she looked up in awe at the various portraits. The artwork had been done in deep rich colors and masterful brush strokes. Such classic paintings made the rookie wonder if God commissioned the late masters like Michelangelo to do such works for him in Heaven.

Then Evelyn slowed down for she had the feeling that the eyes of the painted Seraphs were staring down at her. Silently judging as she walked by. The young woman jumped side to side...yep, their eyes had that eerie quality to them.

She then realized that Gideon was waiting for her at the end of the hall. Grinning, the young woman rushed after the Captain. “Will you have your portrait hung up here?” Evelyn asked feeling curious as she tucked her hands behind her back.

“Will you have your portrait hung up here?”

Gideon gave the woman a questioning stare. "Me? No, I'm just a soldier. Disposable, really," he clarified. Gideon then paused as he looked at the portraits lining the walls. The idea was rather grand, though... "The Seraphs are chosen by Father based on some unknown axiom. Soldiers rarely fit the bill." With that, Gideon turned towards the door. This woman was... odd. The recently deceased were usually filled with depressive emotions, but she was as lively as the sun. It was just... odd.

Gideon pushed open the door, revealing the stairs leading the the castle's battlements. "It's just up these stairs," he explained. He then unfurled his wings and began flying towards the top. "Oh, and later, we'll have to decide a punishment for your tardiness," he stated. "For now, just get prepared for a sparring match."

Landing beside his pillow, he took up his seat again and watched as the recruits fought valiantly against their comrades.

"Me? No, I'm just a soldier. Disposable, really,"

“Disposable?” Evelyn repeated with a frown. Surely that wasn’t the case, right? The young woman had lost herself in thought at Gideon’s words that she had failed to pay attention to which door the Captain had opened to led to the stairway. ‘Ah crap!’

"Oh, and later, we'll have to decide a punishment for your tardiness,"

“Eh!” Evelyn blurted as Gideon took flight. So he was serious about giving her a punishment. “Aw,” the young woman sighed as she made her way up the long staircase. “Please not cleaning the loo, please not cleaning the loo…” Evelyn chanted as she made her climb.

“Whew!” The rookie breathed once she reached the top. “Quite a flight of stairs. No wonder everyone prefers flying!” Evelyn commented as she caught her breath. She scanned the circular area, noting how all the recruits were in middle of sparring with their partners.

“So, just jump on in and make a friend?” Evelyn asked the Captain, who sat upon pillows off to the side. She then turned her gaze back to the recruits. They looked...intimidating! Grunting and huffing as metal clashed loudly against metal. They were armed with various weapons. And, something else was glaringly obvious. Everyone had wings! She was really a fresh recruit, for Evelyn was the only wingless recruit and that would put her at a great disadvantage when fighting.

‘Well, my chances aren’t going to improve if I sulk around on the sidelines!’ Evelyn thought as she lifted her chin up in determination. The young woman stepped into the arena and began inquiring for a practice partner. “Uh, hi! Anyone open to warm up for sparring? No, oh busy, I see. How about you? Already paired up? Oh yeah, I know I’m late, got lost. Heh, place is a bit larger than what I’m used to, you know? No? I’ll just go over here then.”

Evelyn rubbed her arms feeling disappointed. Looks like she was the odd one out. Her green eyes fell upon a straw dummy off on the side. Evelyn sighed as she approached it. “Hi dummy, nice to meet you. No hard feelings as I hack you to pieces alright?”

The young woman unsheathed her sword and held it at the ready. Okay, so most of her fighting skills were from video games, but the same principles applied right? Evelyn began to try out a series of horizontal and vertical slashes as she held her sword tightly with both hands. “Crap, you’re holding up better than I thought!” Evelyn grunted at the straw dummy.

Soon, her arms were already feeling tired and finger pads were feeling the wear. Jeeze how do these guys do this, they make it look far too easy!

“Oh ho! I’ve been going easy on you mister!” Evelyn taunted the straw dummy before whirling about, lashing around her blade as she yelled out, “Special twirl attack!” And thrusted her sword right where the dummy's heart would have been. “Ha ha!” Evelyn cheered in satisfaction...until she tried to pull out her sword. It was stuck!

“Aw, crap…”
The rookie cursed under breath. Hoping she would be able to dislodge her sword before the match began!

“Will you have your portrait hung up here?”

As Gideon sat, watching his disciples, one of the castle's servitors walked up to him to refill his tea. After thanking the lad, the servitor gave a nod and went on his way. The tea did taste delightful: honey with a hint of lemon and... cinnamon? It was nice when he got to sit back and relax instead of being a soldier all the time. Gideon's proud gaze looked over the arena, falling upon the newbie. She seemed to be battling a... Gideon stood to his feet, an irritated sigh escaping his lips. With his wings unfurled, he flew over to the girl, landed, and watched. He was utterly perplexed by this woman.

"What. Are. You. Doing?" he bellowed. "The enemies we face won't sit idly by while you dawdle! Dying as an angel is not the same as dying a mortal." He paused to emphasize his point. "If you die as you are, you will cease to exist..." Gideon exhaled in an attempt to calm himself. "Even more so, we can have the Demons getting their hands on angelic souls... Who knows how powerful they'd become then." Gideon then turned and watched the other recruits. It seemed everyone was already paired. "Right then... Come, Evelyn. I will be your sparring partner.... And don't worry, I'll go easy on you."

"What. Are. You. Doing?"

Evelyn jumped away from the straw dummy; abandoning her sword completely in alarm to the Captain’s sudden appearance...and words.

The young woman tried to keep her chin up and not break her gaze from Gideon as he berated her. Yet, her lips quivered slightly. Finally, her green eyes looked down at the ground. She didn’t know that about death, nor of souls. Evelyn was trying, really she was! But, the rookie seemed to have hit the nail in the coffin this time.

At Gideon’s pause, Evelyn’s eyes closed tightly together as she waited for the inevitable dismissal. The Captain’s following words were far from what she had expected!

Evelyn looked back up so quickly that she almost gave herself a whiplash. Her green eyes were wide as she smiled gratefully up at the Archangel. “Aye Captain!”

“Okay!” The young woman cheered gratefully as she rushed back to her sword, pulling the blade out with all her might until it was finally was freed. Quickly. she returned and jumped into a readying stance like a tennis player preparing to play. It still felt a little odd to be holding a sword, rather than a tennis racket.

The young woman took in a deep breath. “I’m ready sir!” Evelyn nodded with a determine expression. She was completely unaware that all the recruits had paused in their training, and all eyes were focused upon the pair.

“I’m ready sir!”

Gideon watched as the woman enthusiastically took up her sword and got into a rather laughable stance. "You want to stay light on your feet, when the enemy attacks you must either block, or dodge," he explained as he unsheathed the blade strapped to his hip. "Keep your sword up, and keep an eye on your opponents hips. That way, you'll know where it is they plan to go." Gideon then got down and held up his sword: a short demonstration of what he was talking about. Then, without much of a warning, he charged at Evelyn. He had to see where she was at skill-wise so he could determine what it was she needed to know.

As he moved in close, he pushed off of his left foot and circled to the recruit's left. Then, he planted his feet and flipped up and over the woman. As he landed, he would swing his sword at her, but stop before hitting her if she couldn't block or dodge.

"You want to stay light on your feet, when the enemy attacks you must either block, or dodge,"

“Oh!” Evelyn nodded at the Captain’s instructions as she adjusted her stance to look more like Gideon’s. But, when she looked back up it was to see him lunging right at her!

“Holy shi..shiny pants!” Evelyn blurted and quickly corrected as Gideon charged. Evelyn gripped the hilt of her blade as felt the breeze he created around her. Her green eyes were wide and her legs seemed frozen as she stared up at the Archangel flying over her.

Then, as if something long since dormant within her, sprang to life. Evelyn, focused on which direction his hips were facing as his feet were about to touch the ground. Then she sought out the angle at which Gideon’s blade was traveling. Exhaling, Evelyn leaned into her forward step and brought own blade up to met the Captain’s in one fluid motion.

The young woman’s simple blade clanged against Gideon’s. The shock of the strike reverberated through her hands and up her arms, making her take a step back to steady herself. Suddenly, Evelyn became very aware that her knees were made of jelly.

A proud smile slowly spread across Gideon's face as the woman's sword came up to block his attack. "Good reflexes," he complimented as he broke away from her, taking a few steps back. "It's important to always know your enemy's location. However, if you are unable to find them, keep your defenses up. Don't focus on your sight, but the nature around you. Feel the wind's ripples, hear their breaths, and keep your guard up." As he finished his lecture, his wings unfurled to their full length, arched back, then flapped downward, pushing Gideon somewhere unknown to all watching.

Gideon, now a few hundred feet in the air, swooped back and forth, circled above Evelyn, then dived downwards towards Evelyn from behind. If she'd been listening to him babble on before each of his attacks, she'd understand what it was she'd have to do here. Gideon held out his sword as he sped down towards her. If she dodged, he'd roll on the ground and recover on his feet. If she tried to block, her sword would most likely get knocked from her grasp, and if she couldn't find him; well, it'd be better she die here than by demons.

Evelyn looked at her blade in disbelief as her knees wobbled a bit.

"Good reflexes,"

The young woman shifted her gaze from the blade to the Archangel as he took a step back. A smile spread upon her lips. Maybe she wasn’t a hopeless case after all!

...and maybe she thought that too soon. For Gideon suddenly rose up, up... up into the bright sunny sky. The sun glared back, causing Evelyn’s eyes to water. Quickly, the young woman blinked away the tears, but this wasn't going to work.

"Don't focus on your sight, but the nature around you."

Evelyn looked back at the ground, held her sword up, and lightened her stance as Giedion had instructed. Then, she closed her eyes. Alright, easy now...Breathe in breathe out, and now listen...

She felt it, the whoosh of wings, the disturbance in the air about. Gideon was bearing down on her right now! She had to move!

Quickly, Evely leapt to the side, rolling, a little to awkwardly, but enough to get out of the way. She nearly slipped as she scrambled back to her feet with her sword in her hand. Something to definitely practice! Her heart thumped madly against her chest as she looked over to where where she had just been.

Gideon came crashing down right where Evelyn had been standing, and let himself roll a few times before standing to reduce his momentum. Gideon stood tall has he sheathed his blade. "Nicely done, recruit," he remarked. She was doing well for someone new to this realm: she caught on fast. That was a quality necessary for warfare, where situations could change at a moment's notice. Gideon then pointed to a random recruit in the room: he had red-brown hair and stood about a foot above Evelyn. "You," he spoke. "You will spar with her." The man looked nervous, maybe it was the fact that Gideon had just placed everyone's attention on him. Gideon then asked for the identity of the man's spar partner. "You will spar with me," he told someone in the crowd. "The rest of you, get back to your spar! Holy warriors are Guardians for those who can not defend themselves. To this end, you must train hard to fulfill your role. They are counting on you!" And with that, Gideon went off to spar with the recruit.

The man was quick with his dodging, but his attacks were weak. He had a good sense of space and surrounding, as well. After a few minutes, Gideon moved on to another recruit, and so on.

⋖⋯Hidiyoshi ⋯⋗

Amber eyes gleamed from under a pulled over brown hoodie. The man sat by himself in the dim corner of the bar. He had a way of melting into the background so that the waitresses and passers by didn’t bother him as he watched...and waited. Hidiyoshi was on the prowl tonight.

He had received a handful of memos detailing various distressed souls around the world. But, when he came across Jonah’s memo, Hidiyoshi decided to take on the case himself. He felt a kinship to this man for he knew personally how far despair of losing the love of your life could push a person.

Jonah now rose, shakily to his feet. Hidiyoshi waited a bit before going after the man. Then he waited as the firelight of the lighter glowed. “Leah Anders,” Hidiyoshi said softly as to not startle the man. He knew it would catch the man’s attention even at such an intoxicated state.

“I lost the love of my life as well,” Hidiyoshi added as he pulled back his hood as to not appear intimidating. His face was honest as he continued. “What if I told you there was a way to bring her back? Would you do it?”

Hidiyoshi knew he would have to make his case quick. He didn't have the luxury of time, for at the moment he made contact with Jonah, Hidiyoshi knew it would be not long before ‘they’ showed up...

Evelyn bowed her head at Gideon’s remark, and grinned happily. She then smiled up at the other recruit as he stepped forward. Once Gideon left them, the young woman asked the other recruit. “Um, what’s your name?”

At first he was taken aback by her question as he held up a great sword at the ready. Then he realized that young woman had missed roll call and would not have known any of the other recruits’ names. “Tomas,” He replied.

“Evelyn,” The rookie remarked with grin as she then slid into a readying stance. Then the two clashed their swords. Quickly Evelyn realized that while wings gave the recruit the ability to get off the ground, she could make the feathered extensions an annoyance for Tomas.

Evelyn began to hide behind the fluffy feathers if the were unfurled and tricking the recruit into thinking she was still behind his back. The wings also made Tomas a little slower in whirling around and Evelyn used the speed of her petite frame to find openings and dodge Tomas’s great sword.

Suddenly a low horn resounded in the air making all the recruits pause. Another angel had announced his presences as he descended from the sky to land softly before them. He had pale fair skin that contrasted his four pure wings. Long silky white hair framed a slim face that had high cheekbones giving the angel a slightly haughty look.

A simple golden circlet with a gleaming ruby stone at the center wrapped around his head while he wore a crimson silken robe, that was draped over him like a toga. It was paired with loose fitted harem pants that were of a warm shade of orange with swirling golden stitching around his barefooted ankles. Icy blue eyes surveyed the group of recruits, though seemed indifferent before they settled upon Gideon.

Everyone bowed before him, though Evelyn just continue to gawk. “Wooow…” He seemed to glow, as if his skin was somehow luminous as he shimmered in the sunlight.

He is one of the Seraph! Evelyn realized as she recognized him from his portrait earlier. Gabriel, the messenger of God. And hanging from a strap was a golden horn.

“Archangel Gideon,” Gabriel greeted in a deep rumbling voice, with a slight incline of his head. “You have been given a summons to duty. You are to bring a recruit with you to demonstrate your duties to one distressed soul name Jonah Ross. Father also added for you to, choose wisely.”

As Gabriel spoke his eyes left the Archangel to appraise the bowed heads of his ward, before falling onto a petite wingless woman. Gabriel arched his brow slightly at her ogling before focusing back onto Gideon. “I take my leave,” Gabriel remarked for taking a backwards step and falling off the battlements into the clouds below.

Evelyn turned her gaze upon Gideon, and gave him the biggest puppy dog eyes she could muster!

Archangel Gideon
Alignment: Holy Warriors | Title: Captain | Location: Heaven's Battlements

The recruit Gideon sparred with, a dainty girl with golden hair and ivory eyes, had barely managed to deflect one of the archangel's swings. As he would have guessed, she wouldn't hold up much in a fight, but her lithe frame would allow her to move unnoticed. Gideon contemplated having her join the siege-sect of the Holy Warriors. As he backed away from the woman, however, a horn sounded; something important, dire maybe. Gideon's head rose as an angel descended from above onto the battlements. Gideon recognized him, in fact everyone probably recognized him; out of all of the Seraphs he was probably the most important.

"Gabriel," the archangel muttered. His presence at this place meant that the Holy Warriors were definitely needed.

You have been given a summons to duty. You are to bring a recruit with you to demonstrate your duties to one distressed soul name Jonah Ross. Father also added for you to, choose wisely.

As the Seraph left, falling into the clouds and flying away, Gideon looked over his students. One of them were to accompany him to deal with one of the distressed souls of mortals. But they all showed promise... A hard decision would be made....

Gideon's eyes came to rest on Lauren, the golden-haired girl he'd just sparred. She looked at him, eyes wide, then quickly looked away. She was fast both with striking and evading, but she had much to learn still. She needed to learn a proper technique if she wished to prosper. She wasn't ready. Gideon then looked to the short, black-haired dark-skinned man named Damien he had also sparred with. He had a fire in his eyes: he wanted to be the one taken on this mission. However, his passion was too strong... He had a hot-headedness about him that Gideon would have to help the man overcome. He, also, was not ready. Gideon continued to examine his students until his eyes came to Evelyn. She had this look about her face that made the archangel uneasy. Gideon contemplated taking her: she showed determination and was quick on her feet even though she was only a beginner, and though she was a bit ditzy, her reflexes were above average... she showed promise.

"You... Evelyn," the archangel bellowed. "You shall accompany me on this mission. The rest of you may take the rest of the day off. Training will continue tomorrow morning.... Don't be late." As he finished his decision, he spotted several jealous eyes amongst the recruits before they dispersed. Jealousy was a quality the angel disliked, and planned to deal with them later. He then drifted his gaze back to Evelyn. "Come now, we must prepare," he explained as he unfurled his wings to take flight.
