"What the hell gets you exiled from the extremists?" Jack had to ask between sword swipes. He paused, as if expecting their target to provide an answer; sadly, it did not. "Probably being a considerate humanoid, for one. Maybe this one hugged one too many minipets."

Another fired shot, knocked mostly askew by the horseman's blade. Kostya furrowed his brown in frustration. "A lone vun vould be easier to capture, at least." He winced, and not from the returning attack. He had been...preoccupied, too preoccupied, to go after his intended focus. Alas. Maybe after this was over, he could turn his attention back towards it. hp: 35 damage: 2 charge: 2/3 horseman hp: 27

"I guess hogging all the ******** sugar lumps or something. Who knows, they are horses, even normal horses are eye rolling crazy bastards." He had no mercy at all for horsemen, at this point all they were to him was a potential bounty or a notch on his weapon.
Tracey reminded him sternly, he explained it was a figure of speech and attacked.
"This c**t's no got a snowflake's chance."

Barking a laugh at the image of a bunch of grown a** warriors licking sugar cubes, Jack continued the assault. At least now the thing was starting to look tired.
"Would we have to drag it behind us while we work, or can we call it in?" he asked. "If it's the former, not it."

"I am unsure," Kostya replied, inspecting his enemy with a stern eye. Rep was right: this creature was lagging, now, limping on one leg. He had no pity for it, but that was not unusual: he had no pity for nearly anything. "May be best to eliminate and move on to ...ah. Bigger prey." hp: 30 damage: 2 charge: 3/3 horseman hp: 11

Tracey lit up with a sharp and satisfying thrill as Rep landed his third blow on the horseman, it was like a drink of water to a thirsty man and he couldn't keep the bright grin off of his face. He might have argued for the sake of bonus pay alone--he was in need of some funds after Christmas and especially with the impending move to towns slowly creeping upon him--but the horseman's tenacity and taunting curses diverted him from it. "Next time, then," he said more to himself than to them as the thing dodged around. There was always going to be one.

"Indeed," Kostya said, aiming a final shot at the horseman. It blew the thing's head clean off, causing it to dissipate into nothing, fading away like grains of sand on the wind. It was gone. The battle was over. He stared, grim face, out at the rest of the desert. Would they even find anything, this trip? The answer was no. hp: 25 damage: 10 (NOW YOU DO DAMAGE??) charge: 3/3 horseman hp: it ded medigel after talking with liz, handwaving a trip back & forth to bring things up to present times instead of backdated! baneful after talking with liz, handwaving a trip back & forth to bring things up to present times instead of backdated!

Rep was considerably less confident as he trudged back to the desert this time, Tracey was not what he had had been on his previous visit and he was wracked with self conciousness and paranoia.
"Dunno how much use I'll be." he said gruffly, burying his face in the fur ruff of his coat.

Intrepid as he had started out, the second venture had far less luck for him than the first. Another sandstorm had struck, and while this one contained no enemies, it did set Jack--after an unfortunate gust and due to the even more hazardous terrain of hard rocks it was revealing--off course from the group. He took a semblance of refuge by the corpse of a tree and its cacti compatriots, grasping at its dry bark and riding out the storm in hopes that he might get spotted after the weather had died down.
Naturally, he was mistaken.
It wasn't his first solitary trek through the Sahara, but he had hoped July's disaster could have been avoided. Nevertheless he made an inventory of what was immediately on him, making rough calculations for rationing as he checked his cell. Nothing. He attempted radio contact as well with no expectation of receiving even a flicker of static, but the motion comforted him. Compared to his previous Sahara mission, this was practically a walk in the park, though: at least he had a functioning means of porting out if all else failed, and at least he had two people who would notice he was missing. Not to mention he wouldn't have to go through the process of eating someone to stay alive again. Much, much better than before.
Jack hummed to himself as he pulled away from the sliver of shadow the tree casted.

He was wary of a variant of highway hypnosis encroaching upon him the longer he walked. The desert seemed to stretch endlessly beyond his line of sight, the horizon sculpted by sandy waves that just bobbed up and down and up and down until they froze in place. Perhaps he was so tall that he couldn't be swept up in the currents the unreliable wind kicked into a frenzy.
One hundred and ten steps reached. He checked his phone: no signal. Reset counter. One, two, three...
For all his layers, Jack still felt his skin growing an angry pink and tugged his cowl down. Don't think about the sand sea. Water left? Not enough. He was right not to trust the illusory oasis he passed by precisely two thousand one hundred and twenty-four steps ago. The woman at his side, a passenger gained around another six hundred steps later, sang snatches of "Desert Song" in a husky voice that didn't match such pretty lips. Ignoring her didn't seem to help, but acknowledging her seemed worse.
An hour later--he couldn't recall if she had always been there, or if she had come and gone as a ghost was wont to do--but wait was it another hour now?--count the steps again, not since the stumble, count them since the snake sighting and add them up--somewhere in the ten thousands at this point--fine, five steps after he began to calculate everything again, she kicked it up a notch. Arms up like she held a guitar, she started to hum a different song. His mind supplied the lyrics.
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name...
The upbeat song was catchy and forced him into a slightly faster march than before. Numbers that had stayed in the forefront of his mind for so long, that had been his clock and his means of staying alert, began to fade in the background. Lines blurred. Left, right, don't, drown, five, six, seven, and--
After nine days I let the horse run free 'Cause the desert had turned to sea...
The woman made the same motions with him as he chuckled, her amused and him not, and yet it was the very same sound.

The back of Kostya's neck prickled. He turned to look sidelong at his partners, and only found one. "He is missing," he murmured, glad for the headsets, as the wind had started to pick up something awful. "Do you remember vhen last see him? It vas only a moment ago, I feel--" Kostya frowned.

Rep shook his head. "Not a ******** clue man, He was just here. This damn desert just ******** does whatever the hell it wants."
He really ******** didn't want to lose another person on a mission, he liked Jack, there were too many people needing a kick in the ego on the island and not enough damn people to do it.

Kostya's lip curled, empty grey eyes scanning the surroundings.
"You are very much correct."
Tying a spool of wire around a nearby rock, Kostya hummed to himself. "So ve can come back to it," he explained, ever redundant, and checked how much feed he had. About five hundred feet. Probably not nearly enough, but his bag had a spool or two left.
"To Vest," Kostya offered, but there was no confidence in his voice, just a weary sort of acceptance.

Rep was glad of the other man's resourcefulness and stuck close to him as they went, anxious that he would end up separated from him and alone with nothing but the desert for company. "Good idea, nae use finding him if we can't find our ******** bearings again."
