Another long pause, and Noah finally replied, his voice muted and thick with feeling. "I just, I want you to be with someone who deserves you." It sounded stupid, and he winced as he said it. He swallowed. "I should go."

Al's gaze refocused and he turned towards the wall, confused. "What?" What the hell was that even supposed to ******** mean?

"Someone who'll be good for you." Noah looked toward the door briefly, away again. He was messing this up too. He could tell. "I'll. Thanks for the pie, I'll tell you how it is. Later. I have to, I should go." He pushed away from the wall, feeling a panicky suffocating fluttering add itself to the ache in his chest.

A soft thunk and a loud thump thump thump could be heard as Al got up and raced for the door and his head shot out the opening in search of Noah, "Don't you dare imply that you're not good enough. That I need protecting like that."

Noah had made it only a few steps down the hall; his step hitched and slowed, and he shook his head hard, making himself not look. "I don't, I can't, please, Al," and he didn't even know what he was asking, or why.

Al didn't fully understand what Noah was trying to tell him. He frowned and didn't even try to hide it. "I love you you dumb a**." But he made no efforts to take chase. He stayed where he was, at least that much he was sure Noah was attempting to ask him to do. Stay away. Do not follow. I release you into the wild. Al did not want to be released into the wild though. He was a person.

Noah ducked his head and hurried down the hall, his shoulders hunched tightly and his whole posture radiating miserable confusion. It was cowardly, but he didn't have anything else he could say, he didn't know what to do, and he couldn't breathe. He needed to get away and not talk about it, not think about it, not ******** things up any more than he already had.

Shortly after Noah's escape, Al's door clicked shut again.
Sometimes it was nice having a door.
You could keep things contained.
