She listened, letting him catch his breath, a small hand resting on her hips. Already running, already strength training. That would certainly help, though she wondered if a closer bond was needed to make the handling of a heavy weapon easier. Her own being so small, she had never thought to ask any of the hunters around the island wielding unfathomably large partners. Finn's name had her blinking, and a subtle look of shock crossed delicate features briefly. He had never seemed to the charitable type to her, but then she didn't know him all that well. Their relationship was not even close to a conventional friendship. But at his question she'd nod, the smile returning. "I think you should try it, see if that works better for you than trying to block with an over sized weapon. At least until it becomes easier to maneuver your ax." And with that she'd come for him again, darting in to aim a serious of powerful little jabs at the core of his body. DMG: 9

Oliver caught the surprised expression and smiled. "Finn has been really nice to me. Sometimes he acts awful, but I think he's a good guy." It hadn't occurred to the kid that the difference might have been in how he interpreted Finn's actions. He always thought Finn's teasing was a rough way of encouraging him to do better, and appreciated the blunt honesty. For the following attack Oliver had more success, leaping backwards to avoid most of Peyton's hits. So long as he got his body out of the way, the axe could do whatever the axe was going to do, unhindered by his attempts to block. If he got used to it perhaps he could even use that momentum in his attacks. "That's easier," he confirmed, "I don't have to stop the axe to block." HP: 42/50 Defending: 7

Personally, Peyton didn't have any problems with Finn. He was an a*****e, there was no denying that, but he also proved to be a fierce opponent. Whatever faults Finn had, they didn't negatively impact the Sun or her life, so she had no reason to dislike him. "So long as he's being helpful," she'd muse, chuckling to herself with a shake of her head. Dodging seemed to be Oliver's ticket to defense. He was small, light, and fast on his feet. Given training he could be faster. She gave an approving nod, looking at the trainee thoughtfully. "Yes, I think that'll do. Let's keep going with that. Just let me know when you're getting tired, or just want to stop." Again she went for him, small fists drawn back and thrown forward in quick little jabs aimed for the core of his body. Straight forward attacks, for now, to let him get the hang of it, then she'd throw in a few curve balls to see how he well he adapted. DMG: 6

"He told me he would-" Oliver yelped and just barely dodged Peyton's next round of attacks. It was definitely easier, but it would take some time to get the hang of it. A great deal more time if he wanted to handle the massive axe's attacking swings at the same time. "Finn told me he would try and keep me alive," Oliver finished with a huff of breath. "I'm sure it hasn't been easy." Truth be told, he wanted to stop right then and there. The choice offered to him was so tempting, but he had to approach it with the same commitment as the strength training and jogging had required. What he wanted didn't mean much in a life or death situation. Instead of backing off and calling it quits for the day, he readied himself for the next attack. HP: 42/50 Defending: 8

When he didn't back down at the offer it had the dainty Sun grinning, pleased. It couldn't be the easiest thing, facing down a hunter stronger than yourself, and doing it purely defensively. It took guts letting her attack him over and over. "He's a good man to have with you in a fight," she'd agree, a small thread of humor coloring her voice. Finn was a strong fighter, it made him a wonderful training partner. Made the girl wonder just how much stronger he was now that he'd caught up to her. She was going to have to extend an invitation one of these days so they could find out. This time when she rushed forward he was ready. Her fists whistled past his shoulder, his hip, but she didn't catch anything but fabric. Dodging was definitely the way to go for Oliver. "Good! That's better. Keep this up." DMG: 2

Oliver nodded, but he was too preoccupied for a real reply. Finn had made good on his word a couple times now. First there was the zombie in the haunted house, which had been a thousand times worse than fighting them in his video games. But the nightmares he earned from that mishap was nothing compared to those following his second rescue, in the Sahara. Whether it had been well-intentioned or not, he owed the older hunter his life. Working as hard as he could to be less pathetic was the best way he could repay his friend. Maybe he would be called 'Princess' forever, but he would take that over 'pitiful' any day. Maybe after the sparring he would accept the warm, fuzzy feelings associated with praise from a higher-ranked hunter, but for now he just had to focus on dodging. "I-is it hard to, um... learn to dodge weapons?" He asked, that nervous expression momentarily breaking his look of concentration. Peyton's attacks reminded him of that horsewoman with the small dagger. But would this practice help him against a spear? Or a bow? HP: 42/50 Defending: 7 Beejoux I am seriously impressed at Oliver's defense rolls right now. XD

Another quick assault. Two part, she came in from the left, aiming for his hip, before the right fist angled upward towards the underside of his chin. Not quite connecting in any significant way, but she felt the graze as he jerked away from her. The question was a smart one, and she paused to answer it. "It can be. Certainly it depends on the weapon itself, who wields it, and your current state while facing off against it. Many factors weigh in on your ability to doge, though they do the same for blocking." It wasn't an exact science by any means, and more something you just had to keep working at until you gained the muscle memory, the good reaction time, and the instincts you needed to avoid a blow. "Do you want me to summon my weapon so you can get a taste?" It would be a lot harder, but at least here it was safer. DMG: 8

That answer made sense. As frustrating as it could be to get a "depends" sort of response, not everything in life was as simple as yes or no. Certainly not on the island. Perhaps dodging a large weapon like his own would be a bit easier than a small, light attack, but it could have a larger penalty if not avoided properly. Everything had it's trade-offs, the best thing he could do was learn to manage his own in the best way possible. When Peyton asked about summoning her weapon though, Oliver chewed on his lower lip. He wanted to say no. Every thought in his head said no, and his body language was clearly in agreement. It looked like that was going to be his answer. "Um, please…" He squeaked nervously instead. He couldn't fool himself into thinking he really wanted the practice, but being willing now might save his life later. Everything about him screams 'Do not want!', but she surprised him again by agreeing to her summoning her weapon. It had pale eyes going a touch wider, but a bright smile followed. He didn't want to be doing this, it was more than clear, but he was doing it anyways. Trying to get better, doing whatever it took. Definitely admirable, that willingness to to try, to keep going, was it's own kind of strength. "Alright." Runes flashed, and the twin ringed daggers showed up in her hands. "I'm not going to hold back." Though she probably would, at least a little. "But we've got the wards, so no worries, okay?" If he'd been training with Finn, she had little doubt in her mind that he was well aware of the wards and what they did. Finn didn't seem the sort that to take it easy on someone, even if they were just a trainee. Nodding, she flashed him one last grin before sprinting in and take a quick swipe at him. Her blade hit his ax, but it went beyond that as well, catching his shield. HP: 60 DMG: 9 CHG: 1/3

Telling Oliver not to worry was like telling a rock to stop being so solid. He yelped and forgot what he had been doing earlier, defending himself only well enough to hear her weapon click off his axe before cutting into his shield. He couldn't deny it shook him being attacked by a small dagger once again. He took another hasty couple steps backwards, and inhaled deeply, trying to get the rising panic under control again. Peyton was helping him with his training. She was not trying to kill him. The danger he was reacting to had passed, and there were no hunters he needed to protect. Despite knowing all these things, he couldn't slow down his frantic heart-beat, or keep his body from trembling. Maybe he was still not ready for this… HP: 34/50 Defending: 4

He was so nervous it was almost alarming going at him at full strength. The progress he'd made dodging and defending seemed to shrivel into nothing when faced with the prospect of real danger, but they had the wards here. She couldn't have hurt him badly even if she'd been aiming to. Of course she wasn't. This was training, a favor. Her goal was to help, not hinder. She gave him a moment to collect himself, to get his head in the game, then she went at him again, daggers up and flashing in the bright sunlight as she made a strike for his chest. DMG: 11

The panic didn't lessen as the second attack struck, Oliver could feel it wound tight in his chest, making it hard to breathe. Facing attacks were always hard when he was so nervous, but these attacks, with these daggers, it immediately brought back vivid memories of his previous trauma. A moment was not nearly enough to regain what little composure he had. Oliver stumbled backwards with a yelp and lost his footing, landing with a jarring thud on the ground. What was left of his common sense abandoned him and the panic took over. The only defensive move he could manage was to raise one arm to cover his head, and curl up into a falsely protective ball. And all at once the attack stopped. The panicked look on Oliver's face was enough for Peyton to send Warrick back into his totem form, and as he fell, stumbling backwars, she rushed forward, catching the arm he'd throw over his face. Trying to soften the fall, but reaching him a second too late. "Oliver?" She pulled on him gently, tried to draw him up so he was sitting as she crouched down beside him. "Are you alright?" Panick was not the sort of thing she expected to encounter in a training spar, it had her concerned.

Oliver flinched to be touched, but he didn't try to scramble backwards. As seconds passed and no further fright or harm came to him the tenseness in his muscles dissolved into trembles, and the racing, panicked thoughts slowed. The blind terror gave way to shame. "I-I'm... o-okay..." He finally stammered, but it came out more like a soft sob. Oliver refused to look up, and kept his head down as he rubbed his eyes with his sleeve. He couldn't even fool himself anymore with that line.

She'd triggered him, and it didn't take a genius to figure out how. His arm was tense beneath her fingers, but when that faded there was quaking. "You aren't." Alarmed, Peyton reached out with her free hand, fingers hovering over his hair a second or two before lowering, touching his head gently. It was like a switch had been thrown. From teacher to mother, Peyton transitioned seamlessly. She was used to this, had lots of practice while taking care of Astrid. The urge was strong to pull him into her arms, but she resisted, barely, because she didn't know how he'd take it.
