Qyp almost gasped when Lightning Fast hatched from his egg as quick as could be expected. She wasn't really surprised that he was first. He seemed to be one of the few eggs that was in a hurry the most. When she saw the hatchling, she awed quietly to herself, but then noticed that he was running in their direction quite quickly.
Uh-oh.
Qyprenna mentally prepared herself for whatever may happen. Dragons often could bowl into folks, she knew, and some caused damage. It was best to be prepared for situations like this, and she wanted to be as ready as she could for whatever arose. Then again, one could never be too ready, could they? Dragons were curious creatures, after all.

"Ha! A blue it is!" C'tis grinned in satisfaction, his fist thumping down on the rail that segregated the High Stand from the rest of the seating. It was a fast little thing too just like his own blue and that was somehow deeply satisfying. Up in the perches Malcarreth leaned down as far as he could without overbalancing and chirped a greeting, though it seemed as though the hatchling was too intent on his own business to notice! the blue observed to Evemth, his voice glowing with pride. ________________ Spotting his young kinsman not too far off L'thor carefully picked his way through the spectators until he came up by Pagerell's side. "Quite a sight, isn't it?" he murmured, eyes catching on the blue that had just hatched. Not the best omen some would say but the sort of people who said that were the sort of people who valued a shining hide over a chromatic one, the sort of people that he had tried to.... Well, yes, anyway. "That young on looks healthy at any rate," he observed, mainly for something to say in order to move his mind off thoughts he did not wish to revisit right now.

Hatchings were exciting events, and ever since she Impressed her own dragon, Til'lene made it a point never to miss one, if she could help it. By the time the brown wingrider arrived, a lithe little blue had already hatched from his egg. She smiled fondly at this, relaying the message to Pelgalath so he could find out about the goings-on. Instead of replying verbally, Til'lene felt a wave of happiness for both Malcarreth and Evmeth rush over her.
He was as pleased for the two of them as Til'lene, herself, was. As the little blue went about his business on the Sands, so too did the wingrider up above. She wanted to congratulate O'ail on her win of the weyrleader elections, but there were quite a few people there from other places already. Instead, she found herself a spot to stand in order to watch the events, near L'thor and Pagerell. "Mind if I join you folks," she asked, looking to both of them, and then back down to the candidates and eggs below. This was going to be quite a memorable hatching, and she wanted to enjoy good company along with it.

"It does! I suppose it bodes well for the rest of the clutch?" If they were healthy... Pagerell wondered why this had never happened before? He had never thought about it, only assumed that it was an impossibility because there was never a mention of it in their time. He would have thought there'd be records of some sort had it ever been attempted before. He didn't want to say it to L'thor but he still feared that there was an obvious reason blue's didn't mate with golds... and that it had just been lost to time as knowledge seemed to do. What would Pern look like another four hundred turns into the future? "Venaith is happy about it." Page added. "He says--" Page glanced up at the interruption and his cheeks pinked as he saw one of the Weyrleader candidates standing behind himself and L'thor. He looked to his cousin for guidance.

"It certainly isn't." Elane was proof enough that girls had just as much chance of impressing. Even when it wasn't what they set out to do. Nersha wondered if they had fewer stand impressions now that they allowed girls to be on the sands. There would still be stands impressions, she was sure of that. Dragons had a way of surprising people when they made their choices. It was always nicer though when they didn't tear a trail through the spectators to get to a person at the very back.
Looking across at the woman beside her Nersha smiled. "You've gone all out I see." No change there then. A flash of movement caught her eye and a turn of her head saw the mottle blue bolting heading right to the candidates. By the looks of things as fast as his little legs could carry him. "Hm, wonder if that sound was a good or bad one?" She couldn't tell what shade his eyes were from here. There was no denying he moved with purpose, hopefully it was a good purpose.
------------------------------------
A blue! Look, Vanavia, a blue! Look! Look!
I can see him, love, he's delightful. Vanavia chuckled to herself as her dragon practically bounced up and down on his ledge. Horteth shuffled and wiggled, furling and unfurling his wings. He just couldn't sit still it was all far too exciting for him. The weyrling almost worried he might fall off the ledge and take his seating companions with him. So long as he didn't go walking around it should all be fine. Horteth just needed to try and stay still on the ground as much as possible. If only he would realise that.
He is very energetic! That is good. He is strong! That is very good!
Quite a bit more graceful than you, darling.
Yes, but he doesn't have special feet like I do.

At the last possible moment before collision with the front rank of candidates, who'd had little time to get out of his way, Lightning Fast changed course in a spray of sand and galloped away along the edge of the Sands with another little excited cry.
More eggs were starting to hatch now, and the next dragonet to emerge came from the Debonair Charmer Egg. This one was a green, her face and portions of her forelegs a vivid almost yellowish hue contrasting sharply with jade greens elsewhere on her hide. The hatchling shook pieces of shell off herself, totally ignored a couple of greens and blues that hatched nearby, and started to move towards the candidates at what could only be described as a swagger.

L'thor's brows raised when Page paused and he turned to see what had caused him to stop. Ah, company? Well no harm in it he supposed. L'thor offered Til'lene a smile and a nod. "Not at all, please do. I am L'thor of green Thalassinuth and Benden Hold, this is my cousin Pagerell of bronze Venaith of Kimmer Hold." Time might have moved on and their former titles might now be worthless but they were still their roots and L'thor for one wasn't prepared to let go of that just yet even though he felt he probably should, especially after what his brother had.... But nevermind.
"And you are Til'lene of brown Pelgalath, are you not?" L'thor added though he didn't actually need her confirmation, he had been careful to learn the names and faces of everyone fighting for the position of Weyrleader. "We were just discussing the apparent health of that little blue fellow down there, he seems in fine shape indeed!" Ah, and there came a green and then a couple more greens and blues. He rather liked the attitude of the bright-faced green hatchling, while not as energetic as her slightly elder sibling she too seemed to be healthy and to know exactly what she was about.

A smile tugged Qyp's lips upward when the green broke free of the Debonair Charmer egg. It didn't seem too impressed with her at the Touching (nor did Lightning Fast, for that matter), but that didn't bother her. She was just happy to see that the little girl was not only healthy but eager and colorful with personality. It was also a bit of a relief that Lightning Fast didn't run into any of them, so the bit of sand he sprayed on them was brushed off with a contented sigh. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened so far, and that was nice.

"Well met," she said to both Pagerell and L'thor, giving both of the gentlemen a nod of her head to address them politely. Since L'thor had asked her name, she had no need to introduce herself, really, though it was nice to hear her title said out loud. If she was proud of anything, it was the fact that she was not only a dragonrider, but a brown rider at that. Given the use of titles, Til'lene figured that the two men she was with must have been with Nersha and her group -- the ones from another time. That whole event was truly a mystery, indeed, but they all seemed to be fitting in fairly well.
She grinned at the mention of the blue, and couldn't help but look down at him again. It was then that she noticed that more greens and blues were hatching from their eggs. One green, in particular, seemed to saunter about with her head held high. She and her brother that had bolted before seemed to be quite a pair. "They all seem in good health and good spirits, so that is a both a welcome and refreshing sight."
In her head, she heard a low rumbling reach out to her.
'The moment there is a brown hatchling, let me know.'
'Of course, Pelgalath. Of course.'

Bereck stood on the Sands as he always did, right at the edge and off to one side with the rest of the healers on standby. So far so normal, completely different to the last hatching and there was a mercy! The faint scars left by that brown who had hatched early still occasionally itched, though frankly they were hardly even a footnote next to the much older scars he bore from a much bigger and more malevolent beast.
The healer shifted his weight slightly, frowned, and then decided that nobody was going to notice if he perched on the edge of the table of supplies to take the weight off his leg. After a very brief glance around he did so but he kept his cane in hand just in case... just in case.... Well he wasn't going to go running out onto the Sands or anything but he just felt better holding it than not when he was uncertain, and hatchings were always uncertain times.

Cai bit back a hiss of distaste as they were well coated in hot sand. The tiny grains catching in his short fuzz of freshly shaven hair. Grains rolled down Cai's scalp and into the collar of their uniform, trickling down and becoming quite a nuisance the more collected. Scorch it! Cai thought vehemently to themself. At least the hatchling hadn't attacked, but it was still irritating. Now, only a couple eggs into the hatching and Cai would have to stand the rest of it with sand working it's way into their hose. Deightful.
With even more joy to come apparently as the Debonair Charmer egg hatched and revealed it's green occupant. The little darling just dripped arrogance as she strutted towards the candidates. She too was one egg of the many that Cai distinctly remembered.
~.........~
Page relaxed as L'thor welcomed the brownrider into their company. He smiled pleasantly at her and dipped his head in acknowledgement of his introduction. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance." He shifted on the bench seat to allow for room for her to sit, either beside himself or L'thor as things played out. "I remember Venaith's hatching... he was rather more stately than energetic.
~ Well of course I would be. How could I put my own amusement over the safety of my clutchmates? It is better they can have their fun safe in the knowledge that I am watching over them. I would be distraught if any had come to harm from my own negligence. ~
Venaith you don't even remember your Hatching what are you talking about? Nevermind the guilt Venaith had put himself through upon realizing only a couple of his clutchmates had come through their ordeal with them. Who knew how many others might have survived in the past... but dragon memories were blissfully short. Page liked it better that Venaith didn't remember anymore.

L'thor smiled wryly and shook his head. "Thalassinuth was all over the place, she wanted to investigate everyone, everything. I thought she was never going to choose anyone at all when she finally came over to me having climbed through half of the Stands and made an abortive attempt to climb up to the dragon perches." That day had changed everything, but then he supposed everyone's Impression day did. If Thalassinuth had been bronze however things could have been different, so different! It wasn't that he wished she had been, it was more that he wished that people had thought differently, had thought like they seemed to in Igen Weyr these days. High Reaches seemed to be on the road to change itself, though he still wished one of the candidates speaking out for equality amongst the colours had won instead of the bronze riding woman. Next time, he just had to keep telling himself that.

Keeping his cane in hand was possibly not Bereck’s best move, as Lightning Fast shot past, grabbing his cane and wrenching it away to go prancing across the sands with it in his mouth, letting out little muffled chirps of delight as he cavorted and sending clouds of dry sand up in his wake.

Instinctively Bereck tried to keep a grip on his cane but he was no match for a determined high speed dragon, even a hatchling, and the silver-headed stick was ripped out of his grasp but not before he was pulled off his perch and sent sprawling face first in the hot sand. Bereck spluttered and pushed himself up onto his knees, jaw clenching and left arm curling around his side. "You bring that back right this second you little beast!" Shard it, he needed that! Shard it, ow! One of his journeymen helped him to his feet and once sure of his balance, aided by the table, Bereck waved off their concern. "I'm fine," ow, "but if that little brat puts toothmarks in my cane I'll have its hide for new boots, and its new rider's guts for suture thread!"

Qyp's eyes widened in shock when Lightning Fast came up and stole Bereck's cane right out from under him -- literally. When the masterhealer fell to the ground, her instincts told her to go help, but she held off the moment she saw that one of his journeymen had offered their assistance. At Bereck's threats, all the candidate could do was look out at the little blue that had stolen the cane. She had half a mind to go out after it and bring it back, but she found herself holding off, for the time being. Venk warned them against doing stuff like that, as much as she would have liked to do so. It probably would have ended as well as Bereck getting his cane stolen to begin with.
--
Up in the stands, Til'lene watched the events unfurl with a piqued interest. She leaned over some when the blue stole the old man's cane, and that was when a frown pulled her lips downward. "Well, seems like Bereck can't catch a break as far as these hatchlings are concerned. Poor guy..." This was followed by a shake of her head. She felt bad for him, as something always seemed to happen at one hatching or another.
