She listened to him talk, focusing on his words while her eyes focused on the shapes out in the distance. It was the sudden and abrupt pause of his voice though that had her turning away again to look at him. She stared at him, waiting to see if he'd continue where he was going with that, and gave him a few more moments. Then again...she had heard somewhere that Hunters didn't wake up from the pods often enough...so maybe that's why Ever's three week stunt was tolerated? Even if he was defective for three weeks...it was better than offing him and waiting who knows how long for another abled body?

Hrm.

That was a bit reassuring, possibly.

"On the other hand, though...if you took too much time to be useful, or if you ******** up enough...how about then?"

"Drain you dry and leave you to rot." It was easy-going, though: Ever, at least, wasn't mad about it or hurt by it. For him, that was more or less the status quo. As they spoke, though, he fished around a bit. Came up with a pack of cigarettes that he turned over and over in his hand. He didn't open it, not yet, didn't light up, but it was probably an inevitability. Maybe, though, they were friendly enough now that he'd ask first.

Maybe.

"So, I suggest we all stay useful. But that's not hard. Just make sure you put in more than you take out."

Claude's gaze drifted back out the window, mulling over Ever's words. Put in more than you take out...Claude wasn't sure she wanted to abide by that. It didn't fit the pirate lifestyle plus she refused to let this place drain her dry. She wanted to get the most she could out of Deus without letting it take too much of her in return.

"Sound advice." Was all she said on the matter, keeping the thoughts to herself. Sound advice it was, but advice she wasn't going to live by. Her thumb toyed with a ring on her finger, pushing it in a circle as she mused. She lingered in the silence for a while, and while she usually didn't care to ask about others, she found that she couldn't help but inquire more about this one. After all, they were going to be here for a while, and they were talking already.

"You have any other dimension aside from Deus?"

For a moment, he just blinked at her: unsure what, exactly, she meant by that. Then, slowly, it clicked, made him quirk a confused sort of smile and scrape a hand through his hair. It was a strange sort of question, and one that implied he was deus obsessed, he thought. Ever, at least, had never considered himself that way.

Though, he was in Life. Maybe they all were, a bit.

"Are you asking me about my hobbies? Or my history? Or my sex life? What are you looking for?"

Claude let out something of a derisive snort. "Oh, no, I don't want to hear about your sex life. Those are details I can be spared." A light smirk stayed on her lips, and she raised a hand to twirl a finger about as she spoke.
"Everything else though, sure." A small pause.

"Anymore about Deus out of your mouth it's assured you didn't exist outside of it."

"I dunno. I didn't, kind of." It was comfortably self-dismissive, though: not uncomfortable with this fact. Ever was frank about it, because it was true, to a certain degree. He scratched at the back of his hair while he considered.

"I had the shitty bartending shifts at a shitty gay bar, because I wasn't good enough or hot enough to take the prime ones. I lived in an apartment over a Chinese restaurant, which I paid for in cash. I doubt it was particularly hard for them to get rid of me." It surprised him, sometimes, that other people had had lives pre-Deus, actual lives, connection -- and all at once he blinked up at her, thoughtful.

"You?"

"That's wonderful." She replied, heavily sarcastic in the self-worth he seemed to place, or more accurately, not place in himself. Claude nodded her head a bit as he spoke, a hand going up to rest her chin lightly on her knuckles while the other held onto her elbow. She was back to looking out the window again as she listened, and mulled over the story. She thought of Chance, who came here because apparently it was more interesting than giving the world outside a shot. Ever, to a degree, seemed to be in the same boat. Maybe not so much that he was looking for some excitement but maybe some...

Was it presumptuous to say worth based on his story?

"Comfortable." Claude started. "Came from a well off family, was attending an Ivy League school, and then I pissed it away to come here."

"Oh? I did a semester at Notre Dame; not quite the same, but..." He spread a hand, dismissive maybe. It had been what it had been. But then something sparked in his expression, a light, actually interested all at once.

"What did you study? Where?" And he could have just left it there, except that he was Ever and they were supposed to be enemies, so -- his eyes swept over her meaningfully -- "Pirates?"

She listened, and then snorted softly. Not at the the fact he went to Notre Dame, but because he suggested she studied Piracy. "I wish." She gave a small wistful sigh. "Economics. Yale." That was so incredibly dull in comparison to pirates.

"What did you intend to study?" Since he only got a semester in.

"I don't know. It was only a semester." But he hesitated, because that wasn't a very good answer, and shifted the book up onto his lap -- leaning back to stretch his feet out and prop them up on some controls. Unconcerned, despite the dark shape that passed behind him in the distance --

"I liked linguistics. I was considering psychology, but maybe that's just because I had a thing for the teacher." To put it mildly.

Claude was about to say that he must have had some idea though, however vague it might have been. Luckily he did add to his answer before she had to prompt him. She snorted softly. "Too bad you didn't stay. Maybe you would've gotten a free evaluation."

After a moment she asked:

"What brought you here?"

His reply was a shrug; crooked, considering, and then dismissive. He was here because where else would he be? But Ever didn't say that. Instead he grinned up at her, all at once. Not the sickly exhaustion he'd shown behind the library desk, but something more of his real self. Teasing, and a bit tongue in cheek --

"...I did get a free evaluation, though. Or two. Or three."

She glanced back at him and noted the grin. A brow arched lightly before she stared at him a moment before she chuckled. What a pleasant surprise.

"The verdict?" She questioned, before offering one of her own. "Bi-polar and prone to fits of narcissistic rage?"

"A hundred and fifty percent gay, was his verdict." Ever shook his head a little, still grinning to himself as he tapped that pack of cigarettes, idly, against his leg, watching its up and down movements and strongly considering fishing one out, now. If he asked, though, he suspected she'd say 'no', but if he didn't ask, he had a feeling she might snatch it away and stomp it out --

It required more thought.

"Came as a surprise to me. Kind of."

Claude was surprised, but it only showed in the way she tilted her head back to regard him more fully, and her brow arched higher into her bangs. "How was it a surprise?" She asked in earnest.

"You had to have some inkling if you had a thing for him..." She trailed off for a moment. "Or did you think you were bi?" Then she supposed that would have been more of a shock.
