A finger left her scythe to point insistently at her opponent.
"Hey now! Doctors are crazy smart. Just cause you grew into your smarts doesn't mean you're not yanno... Smart and stuff."
The pointing finger turned into a waving hand than eventually retreated back to holding her weapon. Just because she was mildly insecure about not having the Grown Up Experience of college was her own damage, but she shouldn't let it ruin her mood. At least, that's what she told herself.

Once she had toppled the taller man, Abbi couldn't help but poke the pole-arm against Matt's leg in the generally same area his staff had recently hit her own. It was a silly sort of vindictiveness that she felt bad enough about that she shouldered her scythe and leaned over to offer him a hand.
"Yeah well, I ain't that cute." She grinned and wiggled her fingers at him.
"Besides, you gotta know how to fight to protect your patients! What if some spooky demon bursts into the Infirmary? You're gonna have to fight it off!" Now she was starting to bounce in her excitement for the scenario, an indication he ought to take her hand while she was feeling able to actually help him off the ground. He was rather tall...

Matt laughed for a moment and shook his head, “well nurses are smart too so I think we are even yes?” He wasn’t entirely sure what had brought her mood down for the moment but he hoped that it would really offend her for the rest of their spar. As for college most of his was not all that great, and it ended in a rather depressing note that made him regret a lot in life, made him regret not being where he really needed to be. Made it really hard to like who he was in general.

He watched as she poked him in the leg wondering why she hadn’t at least taken the advantage of injuring him while he was down and out, most would. “Your not giving yourself enough credit you are adorable and I am sure you know it. As for spooky demons bursting into an infirmary that would be far more easy to fight and not feel as if I am going against moral of a gentleman or whatever I have left of being a gentleman.” Taking her hand he got to his feet and dusted off his clothes. From going to the ground up he felt as if he was a giant looming over her, it was strange almost making him wish he hadn’t gotten up at all and just made an attack from the ground. Instead he moved to another defensive stance, not really making any attack towards her.

“I thought you said you wouldn’t take it easy on me?”

Unable to really argue further, and not wanting to, Abbi let a lopsided smile break her pout and she pointed a finger at the man.
"Even stevens, Doc."

As for being called adorable she at least had the wherewithal to blush, even while she rolled her eyes, and made a noise as she helped hoist him up. For a few seconds she tottered back on her heels, waving a hand at him.
"Its not being ungentlemanly to put your all in a fight. Especially one where, yanno, your opponent expects it of you!" Abbi smiled up at him, just for a moment, and then was mimicking his movement of moving backwards. She appreciated his caution, finding it charming whereas normally she loathed people being delicate with her, especially in a place that prized fighting and being strong.

His taunt, however, only makes her grin widen. In her most honeyed voice she asks, "Who says I was?"
In a flash she's lashed out at him, battering the pole-arm against his hands to distract him before she twists the scythe and, once again, sets the blade against the back of his knees. A good tug and she's toppled him again, appreciating him taking it easy on her, but also pushing him just a smudge to see if he'll budge on that stance.

It was cute she blushed when he called her adorable, but it was the truth and she at least deserved to hear it. Watching her teeter back and forth on her heels his shook his head as he kept a defensive stance. At this point he was probably better off not completely trusting the adorable look, there was no telling what she would do. “Its not that a gentleman doesn’t want to do his best in battle its more of having to break the current mold that he was cast in. In short words I have spent the last twenty some odd years being told not to hit a woman and now I have to strive to my best in sparring against and not hesitating.” More like grasping the idea it was acceptable and not something that present companies would frown in social dislike.

As Abbi moved smacking his hands he looked down as his fingers burned unaware to her looping the scythe behind him again. With a blink of an eye Matt felt his feet move from below him before his back was flat against the ground the breath in his lungs escaping before him gasping for air again. He laid there for a moment before he started to laugh in an almost slightly darker tone than before.

“You were biding your time then, smart” he replied sitting half up with a grin on his face. Rolling back with the spear behind his head he got enough momentum to do a kip-up to his feet before she could even offer to help again. Taking a larger step forward he tuck half his spear under his arm and using both the weight of the spear and half his body’s momentum he swung heavily sideways towards her upper torso.

"I can... Respect that." She settled on, appreciating the effort. Thinking on it only briefly, Abbi couldn't recall having actually met anyone on Island who let their want to be polite lessen their blows when it came to the battlefield. Even the sweet Molly was a fierce contender!
But that didn't dampen Abbi's opinion of the man, only gave it another layer.

The darker tone of his laughter did surprise her enough that she paused, leaving herself open for attack even while Viveca roared in her head to move. Not sure what to think about it, Abbi stood there and watched him jump to his feet and never once tried to move.
A combination of him being very tall and her being very short resulted in the hit from his spear knocking her to one side, crumbling into a roll when her knees gave out.

A gasp left her as her knees hit the ground and she side-rolled back onto her feet, but when she popped up she was grinning, if a little hesitant.
"We are both pretty smart, yanno." She joked, but kept her scythe between them just in case he'd gotten fed up with her knocking him down and was really going to get fierce.

Matt hadn’t realized how hard he had hit Abbi until she crumpled and rolled back onto her feet. For a second he felt concerned that maybe he had cracked a rib or two or that his attempt in giving it his all would more or less backfired on him and he would end up regretting it. More or less regretting it by losing a limb or two with the rather sharp end of her scythe.

Maybe even losing his head.

She still had a grin on her face but her scythe was still between them, she was on guard more than she was previously. “Sorry, you said to take it more seriously tho I might have gone overboard… ” He tried to give her a smile but he still felt a little bad about it, she wasn’t going to trust him either at his words but he wasn’t going to hold back again either.

Moving forward Matt smacked the backside of her scythe away from her, as he grew closer not wanting her to twist around back at him for an attack. Bringing the end of the spear forward he lunged it forward squarely into her lower midsection avoiding her ribs. He took a step back but stayed close to her.

Not really sure what he was planning, Abbi was taking things a little cautiously, but if she stopped to really think about it she could have let her guard down some more. He had, as of yet, done her no real harm and had only obliged her by fighting harder, at her insistence as well. Perhaps it was just her normal habit to be wary in fights given how quickly they could turn, but even if she has somehow angered him in some way, he's playing very cool.
And, at the very least, it has made her intensely curious about him.

"Overboard? Naw, not overboard. Just... A surprise!" She chirped and lowered her scythe, a small indication that she wasn't upset or worried. "Thanks for giving it your all though! Fights aren't fun if you're holding back!"
And what a thing to say right before she got stabbed in the gut.

A strangled squeak left her as she tottered backwards, surprised by his thoughtfulness in the attack. His first hit had knocked the pole-arm out of one hand, which did give her a moment of reprieve after he'd hit her and moved backwards so that she could curl it over her stomach.
The hit hadn't hurt that badly given her shield, but the impact still would probably leave a bruise.
"Dang, Doc. You sure you're a Moon?" She coughed to get her breath back and swung her scythe back into her arms. "You sure fight like a Sun, when ya want."

Not willing to let him down she rushed him, dodged to the side and swiped at him with her scythe, flinching when she'd shattered his shield and pulling her weapon back quickly in hopes of avoiding any harm to him.
