Dys grumbled as he plucked at the furs on the bed with his claws. Ataya thought it was nice, but Dys was still mildly unsettled by the lack of sunlight in the little enclosure and the looming sense of entrapment was held at bay only by the familiarity he felt between his two younger comrades. He'd probably never describe it as 'nice,' even if the furs were disturbingly soft. He answered with a terse, mute shake of his head. He'd complained about having to stay in the main camp for long stretches of time, but at least it was still outside. At least he could still feel a breeze and the sun's warm rays and hear birds overhead.

His 'room' was nothing like this. He'd go crazy if it was.

Dysarrin scooted closer to Ataya, creeping closer to the head of the bed and edging away from the two taller figures that still lingered close by. Wouldn't they go away? They had the rest of their city to defend...

He tugged Kara near, so that when his wings fanned out, both of the siblings were nestled in as much of their embrace as he could possibly manage. Which turned out to be less of a cocoon than he would've liked. So much less that he still had ample space to glare at Araceli and Detraeus from where he sat. "Dun like it," he murmured softly in response to the girl's question, without giving it much thought.

But she seemed excited, so if she and Ata were going to go, he couldn't not join them, sticky wetness be damned. Hopefully they wouldn't be there, perpetually looming and watching and hovering and being strange while somehow ignoring how different they were. With a rumble, he dipped close to Ataya's ear, hissing out in a low tone so as not to be overheard by anyone but Akara, "What's that?" Dys asked, drawing his arm in close and pointing just the tip of his finger in Araceli and Detraeus' direction.

Ataya liked the idea of swimming — later — especially if they could manage to convince Dysarrin to go, too. It might be the closest to a bath that they would ever get. So, in response to his sister’s question, he nodded the affirmative despite Dysarrin’s response. Perhaps they could change his mind later. At Dysarrin’s question, though, Ataya’s brow furrowed. He glanced between his mother and father, puzzled.

“They’re my parents,” he answered. But that alone didn’t satisfy him. Dysarrin already knew they were his parents. That much had been described. He even knew their names. So what could he be asking about? It only occurred to him belatedly that perhaps Dysarrin — isolated and strange as he was — had never seen purebloods. Or at least not dovaa and oblivionites? With no other strong guesses, Ataya went with it and pointed towards his father. “My daddy, he’s an oblivionite. Oh-bliv-ee-o-nite. And my mama, she’s a dovaa. Doh-vah. They’re purebloods. Do you know what that means…?”

Dysarrin turned to glare at each of the purebloods in turn, lingering on Detraeus at "Oblivionite" and jerking to Araceli at "Dovaa."

They were different purebloods, as he'd thought. But, then, no- No. That wasn't right. The whole reason Dys had a clan at all was because purebloods couldn't get along with each other, because each thought their opinions were better than the others and they fought needless battles over it. That was why they hated purebloods. Spoiled, self-righteous, careless, bloodthirsty...

His wings twitched, sinking away from Ataya and Akara and drawing back to himself. His brows furrowed and his bottom lip jutted out in thought. They were his parents somehow. But, it wasn't... A disapproving hum slipped from his throat as his green gaze flicked back to Ataya. "What... are you?"

Ataya frowned, eyeing Dysarrin’s antics critically and tensing at the look he gave him. That was a familiar look, in a way. Disapproving. Confused. Displeased. Everyone looked at he and his sister like that, but surely Dysarrin…?

“I’m a hybrid,” Ataya said, his own brow furrowed to match Dysarrin’s displeasure, his sore shoulders stiff with tension. “My sister and I — we’re hybrids. Like you. You’re a hybrid. But you knew that…you had to know that. No one thinks we’re anything else, and you—you understand…don’t you…?”

Dysarrin was supposed to understand.

He had to understand.

He was obviously hybrid. More hybrid than Ataya or his sister. He was such a mix, he might not even be able to trace his lineage back to a pureblood. And yet, here he was. Looking at them like something was out of place. Like something was wrong.

And Ataya hated that look.

“You have to understand…” he repeated, voice hoarse and soft, his pulse throbbing unpleasantly between his temples. “You’re a hybrid, too…”

Kara’s gaze jerked from Ata and back to Dys in an instant. Her smile faded as she watched Dysarrin’s reactions to hearing that their parents were purebloods and they, themselves, were hybrids. Why did everyone look that way at them? Even hybrids, it seemed, weren’t immune to being prejudice. “Dysarrin…” Kara frowned, hesitating briefly before continuing. “That’s why we live here, in the mountains. Because we’re hybrids. Surely you knew that…?” She opened her arms, indicating the two colored skin on her body and then pointed to her lack of eyes. “We’re like you.”

Dysarrin hummed- borderline whined as Ataya told him, and Akara agreed, that they were not purebloods. Their parents were purebloods, and they were just the strange, abnormal outcasts from the union of two different races. Dys pinched his lip between his teeth. So, they were- Why here? They couldn't really be the children of these two... these two wrong purebloods. He fidgeted awkwardly on the bed, grumbling in uncertainty and shifting his gaze between the four of them.

It had to be some elaborate plot to- to.... maybe find his family? Purebloods hated hybrids and wanted them eradicated, but surely that didn't merit actually working together. They were different- different. But for some reason Ataya and Akara were here with the two purebloods. It wasn't right. Someone was lying, and it- It was a lot to sort out.

This probably wasn't even a real city.

He slipped off the bed, feet first but with eyes on the ground. "Gotta go," he grumbled, sinking to the floor and scrambling past Araceli and Detraeus with the loud clacking of claws against wood. It was a long way home. They'd never followed him. Why? That was counterproductive to the mission wasn't it?

With only a little a difficulty, he clawed the front door open and slipped outside.

And ran.
