"Do they know that you haven't learned anything from it? That you plan to keep on playing ally to the enemy?" Evan shot back, his tone level where Chel's was not. He was used to her yelling--she'd always been loud enough to match her personality--but he was still getting used to how angry she was. It was hard to believe that they had been the best of friends, once.

You don't need her. You have me.

Even more unbelievable was the dagger that hit him square in the shoulder, making him grunt in surprise and stagger back a half step. Gir was summoned in a heartbeat on nothing more than instinct. He would be bigger than the last time she had seen him--longer than she was tall and bristling with teeth and spikes and sharp points of bone, every inch of him made for doing what they did best. He shoved Chel back hard with the pointed snout of blade. "Stand down," he bit out. "This is not a fight you want right now."

"Yeah, but it's a fight yer gettin'," Chel said. She only had one dagger let, but it was all she needed really. She knew this wasn't a fight she was going to win. Evan had skills, a badass sword and sleep on his side.

It was a losing battle, but Chel had a desperate need to convey something that wouldn't take words. Her fists had to do the talking at this point.

So she stubbornly stayed silent to any taunt Evan had for her. She wanted the silence to speak in the form of the scars on her face and the circular stamp Evan had left her. Let him form his own ideas.

Evan's lips thinned and tightened as Chel refused to back down. God, she was stubborn--they both were. They had provoked each other into this fight, and now they were stuck with it. He didn't want this fight; he didn't want to risk hurting Chel again. That would prove nothing. He wanted her to be able to listen to reason, to sit her down in front of a mirror and show her the bracelet on her wrist and the scars on her face that could have been avoided if only she had an ounce of common sense. He wanted to tell her that he still cared about what happened to her even if she didn't, but she had made it quite clear that she didn't want to listen to anything he had to say.

Maybe this fight had been inevitable. Maybe they both needed this. Evan tried, but he wasn't entirely capable of putting feelings into words--he was a doer, not a talker, and some of the best times he and Chel had had together had started on the training fields. He ignored the voices in his head that were clamoring for her death as penance for her betrayal. This didn't have to end badly. He could keep them and himself in control. He shook his head, shut them out, and drove Gir's teeth towards Chel's legs, trying to trip her up.

The only common sense that Chel seemed to have in her was that she knew when to strike a defensive stance. Evan's sword ricocheted against her arms and it hurt like hell, but at least it wasn't her face or her chest. Those teeth would have done incredible damage given the chance.

She brought her fist down, attempting to slam the dagger into Evan's shoulder-

-but her grip loosened as a spasm of pain rocked her body from the leg up. The dagger fell to the ground and she tried to recover with a roll out of Evan's range. There was something more feral in the way she moved than usual; despite Evan's insistence, Chel had grown since they last fought. In her own way and in her own time, Chel had become somewhat more accomplished.

She let the rhythm of the fight carry her. She knew she wouldn't win it, and there was nothing to prove, but she couldn't break free from the dance even if she tried.

Gir howled as Chel's dagger went flying, leaving her /toothless/ and defenseless and ripe for them to end this end this end this and all he had to do was reach out with his weapon and /let me bite/ and--

No. He could be better than this--he was better than this, even though Chel tried so hard to bring out the worst in him. She was going to get herself killed someday, but not today, and not by him. He had more control than this. He wasn't an animal.

It would have been so easy--

But he kicked Chel's dagger away from her and deliberately put himself between her and it instead. "Stand down," he repeated. "I don't want to hurt you." It was more of a plea than a threat; he knew what he was capable of, the kind of damage he and his weapon could inflict, but it had only ever been directed towards the enemy before. Chel may not have been a friend, but she was, at least, still human.

Chel could have been crafty. She could have created a distraction. She could have fought with her fists, moved the battle around until she could pick up one of her daggers. She could have chosen any number of safer, smarter choices.

But Chel faced problems head on, and that included Evan. She heard his plea to stop, and quite frankly, Evan had lost the privilege of conversation. His request fell on deaf ears, and it showed as she vaulted towards him.

"I won't" she said shortly. It looked for a moment like she was going to tackle straight into Evan, but at the last moment she switched, ducked low and slid around his ankles, pushing herself forward far enough to pick up her dagger. She held herself on the ground, poised in a crouch and ready to strike when needed. "That don't mean s**t when you almost killed me."

She'd had some time to bounce some perspective off of Chris. Some part of her still love Evan fiercely, but it had to be sacrificed for reason. "Finish what we started."

Evan pivoted on his heels as Chel ducked around him, not at all surprised that she had refused to back down. His jaw clenched at her barb and he wanted to be angry, but she wasn't wrong. Fine, then, he would finish this--but he would make it quick, despite the insistence of the voices in his head that he drag this out, slow and messy.

He lunged for Chel, and the arm that held the dagger fit easily between Gir's teeth--until he twisted the sword to keep it there and yanked her around by it, spinning them back around and trusting their momentum to do the rest of the work.

The runes on Gir's blade flared bright red. Yes, they were ready to finish this.

"Being there doesn't mean tryin' t'change them," she found herself saying, even as she was crushed beneath jagged spires of ivory.

She saw the glow and had sparred Evan too many times not to know what was coming. She accepted the damage wholly; let Evan create more destruction. It only made her case stronger.

Evan decided he preferred Chel silent after all--less chance of her doing something to deliberately provoke him that way. "Being there?" Evan growled, his eyes narrowing dangerously. The pending charge was ignored and he went so far as to lower his weapon as he stalked towards her.

"What the hell do you know about being there? All I ever did was be there for you, and all you did was stab me in the goddamn back! You can play the victim all you want, Craft--you started this. You set this all in motion when you decided the monsters were more important to you than actual people who gave a ********. You completely ignored the fact that they killed someone you cared about. You let that thing in your head and put all of us at risk because you're just too ******** selfish to get just yourself killed without trying to take everyone else with you. Being there," Evan snorted in disdain. "Try that one on someone who doesn't know better."

"You think I don't know that?" she spat back at him. It hurt, it really did. She hadn't realized what giving away her secrets would mean, what giving someone the handle to the dagger that could twist in her side would do, what repercussions there would be to letting someone so close.

Evan stalking towards her was terrifying, and every sense in her told her to run, but instead she vaulted forward, ripping through his shield by the skin of her teeth. There were wards in place. To anyone else, this looked like a spar.

To someone who listened, it was more. "D'ya feel better big guy? Got it all out how much you hate me?" There was hurt in her voice; friendship lost, sensitive points hit. Evan had all but made himself an enemy now, or at least someone she would live paralyzed by. Always watching over her shoulder when she left her dorm, always locking the door behind her once she was in.

She actually snorted, a haughty pretentious laugh. "What're you gonna do Evan, quarantine me? Kill me?" But the laugh faded into something more choked, tight. "Y'all already tried."

"I think you don't care who you ******** over as long as you get what you want," Evan retorted. He had left himself wide open for her attack and he knew it and paid for it in bright lines of pain. Getting stabbed in the front still hurt far less than getting stabbed in the back, and he shoved Chel aside with the jagged underside of his sword. She didn't have the right to get that close to them; she relinquished that the second she had sided with the enemy against him.

He heard the note of injury in her voice and a small, mean part of him rejoiced in knowing that he wasn't the only one hurting from her thoughtless, selfish decisions. She had pushed him away time and time again. She had refused every offer of help he had extended. "Yeah, I do," he said, and it was true: his anger towards her had been quietly building and it was a relief to finally be able to vent it. "But I don't hate you. I pity you. You had a chance to get on the right side of this and chose not to. Anything that's happened to you since then, that's on you. We don't have to kill you, we don't have to quarantine you--we just have to wait for your little friends to finish the job they started on your face. It's only a matter of time."

To be hated was easy. Chel had been hated by plenty of people; parents, friends, teachers. That was easily shrugged off with an air of rebellious indifference, easily tamed by a single wave and the two words "******** it."

To be pitited was much more difficult and it left a snarl on Chel's lips big enough to rip through the air itself.

"I don't keep people that try to kill me as friends," she retorted, both in reference to Halloween and to Evan himself. She hoped it stung, maybe, but in the pit of her chest she knew it wouldn't. Evan had long since stopped regarding her as a person, she was now just an idea that he opposed.

She swung her daggers and missed. It wasn't a surprise that she was losing; she had a bracelet and Evan had always been a better sun than her. What surprised her was how much it hurt.

"Could've fooled me," Evan snapped back, using his weapon to push Chel further away. "You think any of those ******** freaks are your friends? You think they aren't using you to get to the rest of us, or that they won't kill you off when they're done with you? They will turn on you in a goddamn minute because they're monsters and that's what they do, and when they do, I want want to have to say I told you so to your ******** corpse."

"So do hunters," Chel hissed, trying to make Evan see the irony of the situation. That Shun hadn't once attacked her when this was what- the third time for Evan? Edel had never dug a hand into her own wound. Any of them had been better friends than Evan had.

She brought her daggers around in a weak attempt to fend him off. Evan was crushing her and she knew it. "You'll kill me faster than they do."

"Yeah," Evan growled, angling his sword to snag Chel's ankle and pull her off her feet hard. The teeth of the blade found her throat but didn't press; if Gir was as alive as a weapon as he was inside Evan's head, she would have felt his breath against her skin. The threat was there, though; one wrong move could have her neck between Gir's jaws with the only thing saving her the wards that kept them safe.

He glared down the blade of the weapon at her, his eyes hard, his mouth set in an unfriendly line. "I would," he said. "If it came down to that, if I had to put you down to keep everyone else safe, I would do it quick, and I don't give a ******** what you think, but I don't want it to come to that."
