Her first instinct was to reassure him she wasn't cold and he needn't worry for her sake, but even as she opened her mouth, the words died on her tongue. He didn't dislike her being here and if he hadn't wanted her close, he would not have made the offer. There was no obligation to do anything for her and really, beyond only memories of things that hadn't happened yet... Hardly a relationship built up in which he should worry about her well being. Except that he did...

Ida shut her mouth and went, tucking herself under his arm in a familiar way. The top of her head didn't even reach his shoulder... There was no struggle to fit. He was solid and warm... Like this, that warmth was surrounding and a comfort more than a heat source. After a few moments of silence, she spoke again.

"I understand that, in my head." She said slowly. It was safe here... Safe enough to admit some things she usually kept to herself in an effort to court his understanding. "I've known for most of my life that people pass on when it's their time, but... My heart has a hard time accepting it. All it sees are people leaving me. It whispers that they leave because I've done something wrong."

It had always been like this, hadn't it? She could hardly remember a time when she hadn't felt this way. Maybe once, when she was very, very young. She didn't know if he would understand... Or if he'd see the hint at the far broader scope she'd admitted to. It was a complicated thing and sometimes she didn't understand it herself.

Tucked as she was, he lowered his arm around her and cupped her opposite arm in gentle pressure drawing her nearness more secured. Sometimes people just needed hugs or closeness. It was natural, as much as the hierarchy of a group, the protectiveness and affection made by blood and family, or the tugs of romance between the glances of people who would become lovers for a time. Here was, beyond being Lady Ida, a girl who was in a great deal of confusion and pain- of life, of the machinations of others, and of her own making.

It was human.

When she spoke again, it was hard to tell if she was just confiding for the sake of needing to get something off her chest, or doing so because she was wanting advice. There was no questions posed, which gave the idea that it was just confiding, and words back would have to be very careful indeed to be taken right. The wrong words would be either taken as insensitivity and close the door left open, or as misunderstanding and equally close the door. Saying nothing? Most young people seemed uncomfortable with silences, even if he was fine with them, and read a thousand fictions into them.

So I must say something. I do not know what advice to give on such things. I am not so good at hard questions. He rubbed her shoulder lightly in the interim to wordlessly signal that he was thinking it over and still present in the conversation. Aware of her by his side.

"The difference between the truth of the heart and that of the head can be useful- sometimes one recognizes what the other does not. It takes time and work to heal some hurts. Maybe your heart was hurt when someone left because of you and it is trying to make that every reason. It is good your mind sees that is not true. "

"Take the time to heal your heart, Ida. It will be hard, but you must- it means you are not trusting people. "

"You are not trusting people who mean something to you to make responsible decisions to meet goals. All nobles are served by their knights and in turn also serve their knights. Everyone has a job, and must be able to do it. " He took a great breath, exhaling it in a sigh that creaked the leather of his belt fastenings. "It is very hard to trust. But you don't have to do it all at once. You can take time and do it right. Our scars are marks of our lessons, but they are also marks of healing that no longer bleed. You are still bleeding, maybe. "

"Not that I am any expert, " He looked down, gently mooshing her to side.

The dark head came to rest against the side of the great chest as he rubbed her arm up and down. The motions felt natural and familiar, things she had done before, and she was in no rush to break the silence or push him to speak. Discourse with Herger had never been... Expansive. He said what he felt was needful and the rest, he showed in action and prescience. That much was still the same. She had worried about how to approach him now and after the offer to stand together... Ida had simply given up trying to apply logic to this situation. It was another confusion, to see a time when the mind must be ignored in favor of the heart.

"It's hard sometimes to know which eyes to see the world through." She murmured, a frown settling onto her face as he spoke of not trusting the people around her. She had always thought she trusted people too easily... But... Maybe, from the right angle, you could view her reluctance to let go as distrusting people to care for her enough not to leave her because of a failing on her part. Trust that they were sincere in their dealings with her.

"I have been bleeding for a very long time, then. I can't remember well a time when I didn't feel this way. It's just more apparent now. I don't know if it will ever heal, but I will try to be better." As he pressed her into his side with a playful sort of squish, a recently-rare smile blossomed, easy and untainted.

"I think you are enough of an expert." Ida said with a soft chuckle, dropping her inner arm behind them so she could hook the fingers in his belt and return the one-armed hug. Ah, this man... She loved him for his openness and good heart. For his steadiness and willingness to give of himself. She regretted that it had taken so long for her to look past the uniform he wore... But atleast she could fix that this time. It would be hard, as long as they remained on opposite sides, but somehow she'd find a way to be his friend.

"Any time one or other is uncertain is a good time to question which to see through, I think. That is how I do it. " Not that he ever had much argument from his brain on most topics. He most often defaulted to following his heart with everything too complicated to reason out otherwise. And no benefit of a lord's clear will and guidance.

Obsidian was gone, the Konge were perpetually and completely busy, and Metallia was remote- absent excepting as her displeasure threatened. Only Laurelite had shown care and time, attending to the lesser vassals as befitted the idea he knew of the service of Sovereignty. Only Laurelite.

The chain of responsibility and duty was rusted and broken, indeed, as Drew had said. To be fixed, or to be abandoned- too many mistakes had rotted the faith of the throne. And now this. Cordiality with the very enemies of Metallia. "Do you accept you make mistakes? Being afraid that another will not- you are expecting they won't accept it. Even with a foreign soul, even with a noble destiny, you are a human. Humans are not perfect. What is done after is the cowardice or bravery."

She hummed a soft assent as she leaned on him, her eyes focused inward. He seemed to find it so much easier to see the truth in things... she wished she could be as steady and confident as he was. Maybe she would make less mistakes then... be a better person. Someone worth the friendship she was so generously given so often. She wanted to be worth something.

Something in what he said struck her and she couldn't help the soft huff of a laugh that broke free.

"I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you, but... Thank you. For calling me human." Ida shook her head gently, remembering. "I've heard that much of the Negaverse calls senshi 'alien invaders', or something like that. The first time I met Sailor Castor, he seemed to take offense when I called myself human... He said I shamed myself, that I was Idan. Its just nice to hear it from someone else, and you are right. Its human to make mistakes."

Her smile was teasing as she gave him a squeeze.

"I suppose that makes me very human."

"Is that the same castor prince who declared war on the Earth? " The image of Hvergelmir's panic as he'd pointed out how it was everything they'd expected of senshi came to mind. As did the distinct dull redness of her trying and shoes. "He can argue if he likes with your birth certificate, parents, and your blood. You are human. It is all that is left to be. And everything is supposed to come from that Cauldron, so he can't argue anyone's soul comes from someplace different. "

"I expect aliens were just people, too. They had families, made homes, traded art, and had a three second rule. Like going to another country, only further. Maybe sicknesses were harder, or air wasn't oxygen, but just mortal people who made mistakes and triumphs. Even the gods make mistakes." He wasn't sure what Idan's were, if there were like Pomona's ' space hobbits' or completely different. But the ruins there had been homes. They'd had gardens.

They were just a people, with maybe different values and goals and gods, but people. Idans were probably the same. Maybe. "A prince unfit to rule will always look for excuses to make gold out of his common wool. Or to fit a yoke to another's ox. "

Ida nodded slowly, her expression hardening to something she typically wore when speaking of, or around, the prince of hail.

"Yes. One night I got the distress call he sent out and I was in the group that found him standing over a pile of bodies in a pool of blood. He'd used it to paint his symbol over the wall. I don't condone his methods..." She said, thinking back over the few times she had interacted with Castor. "They didn't work either, as I recall. They didn't stop us from losing ground and they didn't save us at the end. A lot of pointless deaths... and people who might have left the Negaverse to join us, if they had had the chance. He was never fond of those who had been purified either, I think. Before the camp was attacked, he took his family and fled to his planet, leaving his brother to fight with us alone. I don't know what happened to him after that, or to Pollux."

He was a senshi, though... and it was hard to fully distrust him. He still fought the Negaverse, if not in a way she cared for, and he would help other senshi if they needed it as he had when she faced that youma. Or she hoped he would.

"I would have argued the same reasons to him, but I don't think it would have helped. He was determined to see things how he wanted to see them, I think. Hopefully, I won't run into him too often. I don't want to stand between him some poor lieutenant he's horribly outranked... but I don't think I would be able to walk away from it." Even now, with everything that had happened... if it came down to it, she didn't think she could watch anyone kill anyone else. Even after she had learned to look the other way, to ignore the fighting by surrounding herself with the duty of the hospital... even after what she had tried to do to Bischofite, and that was the real kicker. How hypocritical, to call it justified for one and not another... she had no right to judge anyone for their methods, truly. She sincerely hoped she would never be in a situation to need to make that choice.

It was risky, but it bore saying for them both. "Castor may not be the only one who has been determined to see things how they want them, rather than how they are."

My want to be worthy, to help, to find and serve a noble lord or lady. Others may have weighed prices offered them first, or continuously. A lord must gift his vassals, and Metallia has gifted power to warriors, but nothing to the land. That was a truth I would not see. She has only harvested and harvested. There has been no planting.

And you, Ida, seeing only that your self is hateful, imperfect, not doing enough, even while you fall off buildings and your fingers come to crack and bleed.

He heaved a long breath, trying to clear more echos of the missing name from mind. They would not clear. "There is much to do. It is hard to face it, with the rest of the noise and the city. "

"Will you be alright?"

The gently said words prompted a lowering of her eyes, a glance away from him as she shifted her weight. She wasn't unaware of this particular failing of hers... it had been pointed out enough by her friends, and before that, her brother.

"I'm trying to be better." She said softly. "I'll try to listen more to what others say."

Now was as good a time to part ways as any and truly, she had just wanted to see him safe with her own eyes. That had been satisfied already. At his question, a small smile crossed her face and she pulled gently away from him, sliding out from under his arm. She missed his warmth immediately, but not really because of the cold.

"I'll be fine, there's no need to worry about me." As the senshi turned back to face him, she reached up to pull one of the flowers from over her ear and offered it to him. "You were the one who had a lot on your mind... I hope you find the answers you're seeking. You should talk to Kairatos and Hvergelmir, if you haven't already. I think they might have better things to offer you than I do."

Hver undoubtedly would... she always knew the right things to say.

"If there is ever something I can do for you, all you have to do is say, and its yours... I'm not a princess any more, but I will do my best."
