"If you like, I can pretend to fail." Ripley offered, and was rather sincere about it. He took the ingredients he asked for, then looked around the mess for - "I need a measuring cup." Otto was now his errand boy, because he was being made to do something he had attempted to decline once already.

"December 25th." It seemed harmless to tell the kid his birthday; it wasn't fair that he knew Otto's, he supposed. "I could find out for you, if you want." Death Division and all that.

"Don't fail. You'll ruin my Birthday." Otto grouched back with his cheek puffed. Could Ripley handle the weight of a ruined birthday on his shoulders? Probably. The soon to not be teen fetched Ripley what he assumed to be a measuring cup. It was a cup, and had notches.

"Wait, your Birthday is on Christmas? That's gotta suck." It made it way easy to remember though. "Sure, find out if you can."

"Can't have that." Ripley said flatly, though he at least gave a wry smile, and reached out to poke one of the puffed out cheeks; not hard, just enough to be a nuisance. Two could play at that game, though he wasn't as good at it as the soon-to-be-ex-teen.

"I don't care for my birthday, no." He agreed in his own roundabout way. "I'll let you know what I find out." He thought about pulling out his phone and texting both girls that moment, but he decided to wait for now. He had a cake to make after all, and a birthday to not ruin.

"Preheat your oven to..." Here, he paused, trying to remember the correct temperature in which to bake. "350?" That sounded about right, which seemed the best place to start. "And grease that pan." He nodded to the cake pan he saw out, which was balanced on the other side of the kitchen.

"I won't be able to celebrate your birthday tomorrow." He lamented, though he actually didn't sound torn up about it. "I'm on Haunted House duty." Which meant terrible things, and he had to prepare for them.

Otto stared at the oven. Well, that had been one of his big mistakes when trying this alone; he'd set it too high. He followed Ripley's instruction, pausing when he held the pan. "Uh... with what?" Oil? Butter? Something else? Why was cake batter not mushy enough to not burn?

Feh. Baking logic.

"Don't worry about it. I got a date with the cake, my couch and a s**t-ton of movies." He made sure he had nothing to do that day. "Haunted House duty? The day before Halloween has gotta be deadly in there."

Ripley surveyed what was out, his gaze searching for anything useful, and then which option would be best.

"Butter, I guess. And sprinkle some of that flour." He nodded towards the flour he had finished with, and then turned his attention for the beaters, which he found and grabbed. "Did you buy all of this just for this one cake?"

"Ah - lucky b*****d." He wanted to watch movies instead of do haunted house duty! Hell, he'd even play video games without grumbling if he could get out of it. "Yeah. I'm not looking forward to it." He admitted, casting a hard stare into the cake batter. This was a near-death sentence for him, and he knew it; Halloween Day would likely find him in the infirmary. Again.

"Trade you." It was a sullen offer at best.

"Uhh... most of it, yeah." Otto answered, "Some of it is left over from other people usin' my kitchen." Like Kostya and Cami. Otto only recently mastered cooking ramen with the stove.

Ripley's 'offer' was met with; "I like you, man. But I ain't spendin' my birthday in a death trap." He sassed back, lidded eyes staring down at his work.

"Fine. But for my Birthday, you're going to the Haunted House." He almost sassed right back, finding it to be a fair trade.

"When you're done, bring it here." He nodded to the pan, and went back to work making sure the batter was thoroughly beaten.

"On Christmas? Seriously?" Otto scoffed and brought him the pan.

"Can I lick the bowl?"

"Yep. Merry Christmas." Ripley kept a straight face at first, but it melted briefly into a grin. "Nah. Maybe just stub your toe on something." Or have to wait in line for an hour, either or.

Ripley hummed, resisting the urge to make rather lewd comments about bowl licking in favour of having a fairly polite conversation. "Maybe." He shrugged, pouring the batter into the pan Otto had finished preparing. The bowl was them wordlessly shoved towards the soon to be ex-teen, as the pan went into the oven.

"We have half an hour." He almost wanted to suggest nap time. Almost.

"Awesome." He replied to the wait time, generously scooping some of the left over batter into a spoon and eating it. He'd fill up on batter before the cake would be ready. He sure hoped Ripley didn't want any, cause Otto had a greedy hold on the bowl now.

"So, like.. did you celebrate your birthday on Christmas, or like the week before?"

Luckily for Otto, Ripley knew better than to take food from a starving carnivore. Or in this case, a cake-monster. Batter monster? Either way.

"I didn't." He shrugged in regards to the topic of his celebrating his birthday, leaning back against the counter, his hands gripping the sides enough to drum a muffled beat again them, considering he wore gloves. "Which was - and is - fine with me." He added, before any pity parties could be thrown his way.

"So was cake all you wanted today?"
PostPosted: Mon Nov 17, 2014 1:53 pm

Otto nodded with a shrug. He knew that stance on Birthdays. His were always only shared with close friends. Even then, he avoided any idea of parties completely. He hated them. All he wanted was a head pat and a cupcake, really. That's all.

"Mmmhmmm~" He answered with a spoon lodged in his mouth.

"Just cake." He was easier to please than one might think.

"Sounds like a party." He droned, looking around before pulling himself up onto the counter, sitting on it. It was something he hadn't done in forever, and hey - might as well live a little, since he was living a death sentence anyway.

"You've been okay otherwise?"

Otto was steadily running out of batter. He would have slowed down to savour the flavour, however... he didn't. Because sugar tasted good.

"Uuuuuh, yeah." He answered uncertainly, licking his lips free of any stray chocolate. "Okay, I guess." He couldn't complain. Well, he could. But he wasn't going to. Half the time he wasn't even sure if he was okay or not. As it stood, he was okay at that current moment. The batter helped.

"Cami and Maebe have been a little scarce, but I have been too. So, yanno." He drew circles in what little batter remained, adding a sad face into it because there wasn't enough to create a proper spoonful. "No big deal. Too busy to worry about it." They were all better off. He both loved and loathed getting so attached to others. It made him softer.

He thought about directing the question back at Ripley. He thought about their trip into Canada, and Ripley's dark little destination he'd taken. He wasn't so sure he wanted to pry. In fact, he didn't wish to at all.

"Which is all fine and good until you're alone." Like now, he supposed, when he had time to think about how lonely he was. It was something he suffered from constantly; it seemed like loneliness was the only emotion he was ever allowed to feel on his own, that wasn't from a physical response.

"So." He imagined he had opened the floor for his question to be returned to him, and he was eager to keep it away from him. "How does that work, exactly? The three of you." He had an idea, but it was more fun to prod it from Otto, so to speak. Besides, it kept certain questions away from himself.
