Ara stood, moving down to the same step that Detra was on and looked straight at his face. “I’m sure, Detra.” Her hands ran over her stomach, smoothing the loose fabric over the shape of her slightly round belly. “I’m already showing some.” A small smile formed on her lips as her hand rested protectively over her stomach. “Lithian was using his magic, trying to find what was making me sick so that he could heal me.” She eyed him carefully before continuing. “He...felt them.”

Detraeus exhaled a shuddered breath, torn between his wildly swinging emotions, but he managed to stand, and at Ara’s look, he allowed himself to reach out, fingertips just grazing over the shape of her belly. It added up, he realized, with his observation that she had grown some, but he never would have imagined the reason would be…
His brow furrowed as his mind caught onto a single word. Afterward, his attention darted back up from her stomach to her face. “Them?” he repeated.

“Yes. Two. There are two of them, Detra.” Her eyes began to tear up as she took hold of his hand and placed it more firmly against her stomach. “I’m carrying your children, Detraeus and I couldn’t be happier.” Her lip disappeared as she watched him. “Are you...happy?”

Detraeus made a quiet, choked sound, caught between a laugh and a sob, so beyond disbelief, so overwhelmed by the surge of emotion in his chest he could barely form thoughts to articulate let alone words to speak. So instead, at first, he simply shut his eyes and nodded mutely. He kissed her, as gently as though he were terrified all over again of breaking her every time he touched her, but then more thoroughly. He brought his second hand in mirroring the touch of the first and feeling a rising flutter of unbridled, wild, unguarded hope. And joy.
“Yes,” he whispered, hoarse with feeling, and then repeated it louder. “Yes. Yes, I am happy. I am terrified,” he admitted, and raised one hand to her cheek, grazing a trembling thumb over it, “and I have never in my life done anything deserving of this blessing, nor will I ever, but I swear to you I will work every day until my last to strive to earn it regardless…” He shut his eyes, and gave another half-broken laugh as he touched his forehead to hers. “Two…”
