Laenara knew there would be a touching. There was always a Touching unless there was a dire emergency. She stayed towards the back of the crowd, watching to see where the other Candidates would go. She bowed to Banshidheth and her rider, trying to be respectful while not wanting to meet their eyes. She had gotten into trouble again and it was only by the grace of one of the rider women who had been kin to her mother that she was able to finish up a different set of chores and attend. Lae frowned when she saw several of the chatty and rude folks from the Q&A session but kept to the left as she moved further into the Hatching Sands.
She tried not to gape at the eggs but they were so beautiful. So many different colors and shapes that her exterior wall cracked and the child that she had been shone through... But then, the crack was patched and she took a step forward towards the smaller pile of eggs. As a girl, she was sure many would note if she touched the gold egg or not but for know, she explored. Several eggs pulled at her and she was torn for a moment but then made her way to the Bloodstained Egg. Its bold splash of red both repelled and appealed to her. Laenara reached a hand out and stroked the egg. It felt as churned as she did on the inside. like a constant battle of wits and emotion. Refusing to be scared or cowed, she kept her hand on the shell. "We are not too different, are we? We know how we like things, and we don't like people trying to be something they're not. At least I don't. I prefer straight talking and that's what I give too." She waited a moment and removed her hand. Looking around, Laenara wondered how many others were talking to the eggs as well. Times like this, she wished she could ask her parents what it was like but those times were long past.

She listened as intently as she could while the senior candidatemaster drilled them yet again. But for the last time, it would seem. For beyond him were the eggs. Great. Massive. Eggs. Avalinia shivered. Whether in some excitement or fear, it was difficult to tell. She did feel a little bit excited. Yes. But there was a lot of other candidates here. And those eggs were nearly as big as her in some cases. Not to mention there would be eyes watching her. From the mother dragon.
Avalinia swallowed. As everyone started to move towards the eggs, she shuffled forward too, pausing among a grouping to bow respectfully to the clutchmother and her rider.
And then she was faced with her next challenge; touch an egg. The once drudge looked towards the large golden egg. It intimdated her too much. Definitely not ready to touch it! Maybe one of the... smaller ones? Avalinia walked towards the guarding egg. Hesitantly, she placed her hand against its shell. It felt like she was being assessed, and this made her nervous. Did the egg not think she was worthy enough? Or... or that she was too timid? But she didn't feel any disapproval.
Withdrawing her hand and staring at it briefly, Avalinia turned her gaze to another egg close to the guarding egg. Moving around the charging and bloodstained eggs, she once again put a hesitant hand against the shell of the guiding egg. A sudden smile sprang across the timid girls face. This egg was very kind! She liked it and spent just enough time with it before she felt a 'nudge' to move on.
Which led her to the dud egg. Frowing, Avalinia removed her hand only to place it back down again. She didn't feel anything like she had with the first two. Was... was she doing something wrong? Or... maybe the creature inside didn't like her? Small frown growing more uncertain, Avalinia slowly let her hand fall away and backed up as other candidates passed by. Right up to the keep out egg. She quite literally jumped out of her skin, twisting around to see what had given her such an almost painful mental 'shove'. She stared wide eyed at the red and black egg, braving it just once more to place her hand on it and see if it really had been that egg that caused so much distress.

DraconicFeline JamarinKeep Out Egg: The mental shove-and-snarl escalates to a 'snap' as the dragonet within projected seething anger with an undertone of resentment at Jamarin, a wordless desire to rip into him. EmmitodDancing Egg: A sense of 'Who goes there?' flashes through the candidates mind, but is smoothed over by appreciation for the firm touch. Reaching to investigate in turn, it rifles through Emmitod's mind with curiosity and efficiency, though it gives no indication whether or not it likes what it finds. Go on, then, the Dancing Egg is done with you. Rashel Kitsune JamesonCrystallized Egg: An initial rush of excitement greets the young man's touch, appreciation for his confidence and boldness, though it wanes with the discovery of his tendency to be unpleasant for no good reason. With that, the egg's attention is lost. Charging Egg: Hearty approval meets Jameson's touch, one confident mind meeting another, but...don't get too cocky. You could use a little work, boy! Guiding Egg: ...Hmm. The occupant of this egg seems to agree with its sibling in that some fine-tuning would be beneficial. Perhaps you might consider brushing up on your people skills? Just a suggestion. Nilah44 VesinGold Egg: Mm, yes, that's very nice. Would you mind caressing it again, please? The suggestion is polite enough, but with a very subtle undercurrent of demand. It peers with idle curiosity at Vesin's thoughts, but is clearly more interested in being touched than anything else. magnadearel VosinDud Egg: Nope. Nothin'. Naree LaenaraBloodstained Egg: The presence in the egg surges at first, but as the candidate maintains calm contact, it settles for a few moments. Her attempt to understand is appreciated, but there is gentle denial that they are as alike as she believes, and is followed by a suggestion that it would be best that she be on her way. Kyrieko AvaliniaGuarding Egg: Assessed she was, but not harshly. Avalinia's touch meets with soft approval, assurance that she is not unworthy; rather, she is worthy of protection. Guiding Egg: The young woman's touch hesitant is accepted gently, and savored for as long as it lingers. In their time together, it deduces that her adaptability is admirable, and should serve her well. Dud Egg: Nothing to feel here. Move along! Keep Out Egg: Why did everyone keep touching it?! And why did they always touch it again?! The presence in the egg shoved Avalinia away again, even harder this time.

Kalendol blinked her eyes, looking over her shoulder at Jamarin her eyes softening a little as she appeared to size the young man up. 'Not bad at all.' She thought and then cocked her head slightly, her brunette hair falling from beneath her cap. Perhaps she should've removed it before going to touch the eggs. Though, the few responses she'd got in return were hard in her mind. A pressing presense indeed. Kalendol's pink lips turned up, "Hm, dragon eggs are nice?" She giggled a little. "But I am quite fine. It would seem to me that the eggs will grow finely and should they touch the minds of their riders I wish them luck."
The girl looked the boy over closer and then looked down at the Keep Out Egg, "That one doesn't seem to like being touched. It was pretty keen on telling me to shove off." She looked at the Keep Out egg and blushed deeply. It'd pretty much thought she'd been mocking it. "I meant it no disrespect of course." The girl shook her head and then blinked, realizing she'd not returned the young man's question.
"How're you?" She asked, tilting her head carefully to the side as she bent down to lightly touch another egg. She preferred the Seeking egg to these others, but she had to be fair and touch them all. She cast the Seeking egg a longing look before looking at the others once more, her hair falling to half hide the smile that beamed her face as she touched the more welcoming of the eggs.

Jaric had been looking forward to the Touching. It would be his first one, the first time he'd get to see dragon eggs up close. And even better, to touch them. He'd heard you could feel something of the dragon inside, and wanted to know what that was like. Would he be able to tell if any of them liked him, and might want to choose him? He knew that nothing was certain until the dragons actually Impressed, but if he could get some hint, some hope...
After the Candidatemaster's speech, he headed out to the sands and bowed carefully to Banshidheth. Wait, had the Candidatemaster said to salute? Oh, but everyone else was bowing, so he was fine. Except that he was standing there looking at his fellow Candidates instead of meeting the eggs. He started to hustle over to the eggs, found that jogging on sand wasn't easy (and probably not respectful), and slowed to a quick walk.
But which egg should he start at? The eggs varied widely in size and color. He kind of wanted to touch the queen egg, just to see what it was like, even though he know the hatchling inside could never pick him. And the larger eggs were tempting too, since the biggest ones were most likely to contain a bronze or brown. Any dragon was a good dragon, especially with the wherhold stressing that ever dragon started at equal rank. But he was raised in a weyr, after all, where the larger colors had always been respected.
But he didn't want to be seen as arrogant, so he started with one of the smaller eggs. There was one marked with a lightning bolt that caught his eye, so he walked up to that one and laid his hand on the Charging Egg. What kind of feeling would he get from this one?

When the Bloodstained Egg gave a feeling on it was time for her to leave, she nodded. "Sorry, I hope the others aren't overwhelmed by you. Good luck."
The girl sidestepped past several others, not trying to make eye contact or touch them. Where to go next? Stay with these eggs or switch to the other grouping? Well, Lae shrugged and moved towards the Keep Out Egg. She had seen other candidates jump and startle when touching its shell. It must have a touch personality. Well, so did she. Confidently, Laenara went up to the egg but instead of using two hands, only used one to touch it. The anger was immediate and apparent. She allowed her hand to stay on the shell for a moment longer before pulling it away. It was like touching a hot stone that burned you but gave you warmth at the same time. "I hope you figure out what makes you so angry."
Seeing that the smaller pile was getting crowded, she moved back to the pile with the Gold Egg. She was still hesitant to touch the queen egg and instead looked over the other eggs. Finally, she decided on the Dancing Egg and reached out.

(please forgive any fail, phone post.)
So this was a Touching and those were dragon eggs. The difference in size was amazing, as was the huge range of colours and patterns, Weyrleader's egg had been plain dark blue and hadn't even filled her palm. These eggs on the other hand....
Well no sense standing about like a ninny. Vee strode out onto the hot sands, and the heat surprised her too, though of course she had been told about it the fact that it even got through her tough boots was unexpected.
A short distance from the eggs the wiry young woman ca we to a halt, stood at attention and saluted. She then frowned in a puzzled manner as she noticed that everyone around her was bowing, not saluting like they'd been told. Her confusion was soon dismissed with a shrug, it wasn't her problem and she had eggs to touch.
The first one she approached was lying on its side. Vee stooped to lay a hand on the shell, trying to think open minded. In return she got nothing, a whole lot of nothing. Frowning again she took her hand off and then laid it back on again just in case she'd done it wrong the first time. Still nothing. Vee straightened up still frowning and now flexing her hand too. What if she couldn't hear anything because she didn't have potential? She'd given three turns to this now and.... No, surely if she had no chance somebody would have said something by now.
"Anyone get anything from that one?" She asked softly of those around the dud egg

Zennaren grimaced and shook her head in disgust at the little brown egg. "Nothing. Not like that other one over there." Zen stuck her chin at the Keep Out Egg. Mind that one if you don't want your ears blown out from the inside."
While she talked, Zen shifted a foot and brought herself up beside the Hidden Egg. She did a small double take, narrrowing her eyes at the dark streaks across it's shell. In the light of the hatching sands she'd almost thought it was cracking... but a quick brush of her hand over one of the lines showed it was only color not shadow. She felt a presence from this one though. Zen laid her hand more firmly on the creamy shell. "This one's in there..." Did it giggle? Did dragons giggle? She couldn't tell and as it seemed to pull away so did she.

Banshidheth, ever poised, observed the procession of candidates impassively, her faceted eyes holding mostly blue with only a tinge of orange. Instinct would have her be wary of them, but logic dictated that allowing the children to touch the eggs would improve the dragonets' chances of finding their riders when the time came. It was to everyone's benefit that this was allowed, and so she remained controlled and still as they either bowed or saluted and then moved on to lay their hands on her eggs. Her many, magnificent eggs. She allowed herself some measure of pride at their number, and that one was gold. The Wherholds needed dragons, and the addition of one who would eventually be able to consistently produce more dragons still was a welcome boon. It also disproved the belief that browns could sire only small clutches with no gold eggs. Let every gold who had ever turned their noses up at anything other than a bronze take that and shove it!
The gold turned her head slightly to regard the dragons that had come to attend the affair as well, a little more orange creeping into her gaze as instinct reared again only to be reined back in. There was no reason they should not see the eggs, see how well she continued to fulfill her duty to the cause. Mirath's warble was returned with a feeling of gracious acknowledgement, while Rugarth received words in exchange for his. Thank you, Rugarth. Her own voice held a hint of pride, shared but quiet. Smugness could be their little secret. I am told it is my largest.
Anali, the source of this information - as Banshidheth could recall previous clutches only with the help of her rider's longer memory - stood close by her dragon, hands folded behind her back, and nodded and smiled at each candidate who came forward.

Jameson smiled some, though it didn't remain on his face for long. Each egg was responding to him... Though they all seemed to push him away at some point. Maybe that was normal of a Touching?
He made his way to the Hidden Egg and tilted his head as he ran his fingers over one of the markings. This one seemed to be crowded by it's siblings but Jameson was more intrigued by it's color and how small it was. He wondered just what would become of it.
The next egg he brushed against was the dud egg and unlike the others, he didn't feel anything. Was that normal? He heard the question asked if anyone had felt anything and the negative answer. So was it a dud? Nothing more than a rotten egg or one that just couldn't make it?
He glanced at the large Queen that sat by her eggs. Could the mother tell if one egg didn't hold a dragon? Could she tell at all what the colors would be? Jameson wandered next to the Gold egg. Even if it was a Gold and wouldn't be interested in him as a male, he couldn't resist touching the surface of the shinny egg.

Dragonflight Pern VesinGold Egg: Mm, yes, that's very nice. Would you mind caressing it again, please? The suggestion is polite enough, but with a very subtle undercurrent of demand. It peers with idle curiosity at Vesin's thoughts, but is clearly more interested in being touched than anything else. Vesin smiled at the gold's reaction and started moving her right hand in a circular motion, caressing the egg as she had suggested. "Of course I wouldn't mind." Ves said, ignoring the small bit of demand. She was a gold, and golds had the right to be able to do that, but since she wanted to do it anyway, there was really no problem. As she stayed longer than she probably should have she looked around at her siblings. Esre had stayed with Vos, which wasn't a bad thing. He was normally glued to her side but she knew he would be in good hands no matter what. "I need to go and meet your clutchmates. You were my first stop..." and then she whispered, "And you'll be my last." Ves gave the gold egg one last caress before moving around the group near the gold egg. She started with the springing egg, it tried to scare her and she had been startled a little bit but soon smiled. It didn't spend much time with her, though, and she was soon moving on to the next. From the crystallized egg, she got a swell of sympathy and hopefulness and a little bit of excitement, but it's attention was lost quickly as well. The suspicious egg came next and Vesin lightly put her hands on the shell just as she had done with the gold.

mewrose Charging Egg: What ho small boy! The charging egg's presence blasts into Jaric's head like a bugle call, all confidence and iron-clad pride. Adventurous is he? It likes that, good lad! With that the egg gives him a boisterous shove away, not dismissing him but rather encouraging him to go and meet the others; a fine adventure this business must be for him indeed! Naree Keep Out Egg: The large egg snarls, almost seems to lunge at Laenara only to be brought up short by the barrier of its shell. If it was out there, there would be blood! Stop. Touching. It. Dancing Egg: Humm, well hello there fiery one. The Dancing Egg seems to look Laenara's mind up and down, reaching forward with interest and in turn displaying its pride, confidence and longing to break out and enjoy what the world has to offer. As it senses that her some of thoughts seem to rest with the gold egg however it gives a light 'tsk!'; it would like her full attention, please, for it is far more glorious than its sibling and she shall see that when it hatches! With that the egg seems to watch her expectantly, perhaps waiting to see how she will react to its light reprimand. Rashel Kitsune Hidden Egg: Humm. Humm, humm, hummmmmmm. The Hidden egg slides comfortably into Jameson's mind, assessing him thoughtfully but not digging forcefully. His wondering about it however is met with a feeling of a little flutter of laughter, well he will just have to wait and see what it is and what becomes of it won't he? Nilah44 Suspicious Egg: The dark suspicious egg is deeply suspicious of you, Vesin. The egg's presence pokes sharply at her mind, seeming to scowl as it tries to work out what her intentions are. Has she been good to its siblings? After a few moments the egg seems to settle somewhat, still regarding Vesin warily but apparently content that she was guilty of no great crime. She had better remain on her best behavior in its home though or it will make her regret it sorely when it gets out!

The seriousness of the suspicious egg was met with seriousness from Vesin. "You don't have to worry about me, I will be on my best behavior, you have my promise." She left with a smile as she was similar with her own feelings towards her siblings.
The burning egg was a mystery to her. She could tell there was something there and wished it would reveal itself to her. Ves gave it a gentle pat before moving on.
The dancing egg was next. It was so pretty! Vesin honestly felt bad when she interrupted the poor dear and made her apologies in abundance. The pride, strength, and zest for life was a pleasant surprise to her as she was glad that such an exuberant egg also had strength.
The pretty sky blue laughing egg held Vesin's attention before she touched it. It reminded her of a clear day she'd like to spend out with her siblings. The laughing that accompanied touching the egg seemed to make her day dream even more real. It was a little bit of a silly ceremony but it was tradition none the less.
Vesin went to the welcoming egg next and placed her hands just as gently as before.

Not just her then, that was good.
Shrugging slightly Vee moved on and laid her hands instead on the pale shell of the Invasive Egg. You were meant to be able to tell what colour they were by the size, right? This one looked fairly small so did that make it a green or a blue? Oh, but atypes came from small eggs too so she supposed it could be that.
Shaking her head slightly Vee focused her attention on the egg rather than her own musings, really rather hoping that she'd get something from this one. If she didn't then she was going to start to worry.

The ringing echo of the Keep Out egg still lingered as she kept a hand on the Dancing Egg. She could feel its confidence, its happiness, its readiness to have the world look it over. When she was reprimanded, Lae gave an apologetic grin. "You're right. One thought at a time, one egg at a time. I am sure that you will outshine any of the others here. After all, there is so much more freedom down at the bottom of the ladder instead of the top."
She stayed with the egg for a moment before noticing that the crowd was starting to shift again. "I hope your happiness tempers your sibling's anger. I know that you will make someone very happy."
Removing her hand and stepping back, Laenara almost felt wistful. Shaking herself, she moved and stood over by the Gold Egg. Surrounding it were other eggs and she stood there, thinking.
