Ara relaxed as LIthian’s magic traveled through her. With anyone else it felt like an invasion that she had to deal with, someone foreign going through her body. With Lithian, however, she was instantly at ease, the familiar warmth of her friend surrounding and filling her. She let her eyes close as she felt her queasyness go away for the most part. Ara smiled and opened her eyes when Lith pulled his hands away.
Ara eyed him as she pushed herself up and let her back rest against the headboard. It was a relief to hear that she was healthy. She was confused, though, as to why she was throwing up so much. Did he just mean that the bug was finally working its way out of her system and she’d be better at any moment? She tilted her head, eyes narrowing at his last comment. “Lithian...what is it…?”

Lithian flushed hotter and cleared his throat. “It, ah…nothing, it’s just. Well. It’s not nothing. It’s definitely not nothing. And I know you were taking potions for some time. Contraceptives, that is. But, mm…it would seem…” He coughed. Again. After glancing to her, he offered a nervous smile, lacing his fingers together. “You’re with child. Er.” His brow furrowed. “Children. That is…” He drew a breath. “You’re pregnant…quite pregnant. Very pregnant…twice pregnant?”

Ara stilled, eyes widening at Lithian finally let the news spill. Pregnant? She couldn’t be. “I...I’m what?” Ara asked, confused. “But I’ve been...there’s no way...I’m pregnant?” Her hands instantly moved to lay over her stomach, eyes closing shut tight. “Can’t be,” she whispered mostly to herself. “Twice?” She looked up to Lith, eyes glistening. “You mean…twins?” Her eyes widened again as everything finally clicked into place. “I’m having Detraeus’...child...twins?” Her hand covered her mouth as a sob escaped.

Lithian watched the train of reactions, attention fixed to her, and when the first sob escaped, he immediately leaned in, wincing and shaking his head.
“Hey, shhhhh, shhh, shh,” he murmured, wrapping his arms gently around her to hold her close — give her a base of support if she needed it — and draw a hand up and down her back to soothe her. “Yes,” he said, and reached up as he did, brushing across her cheek and studying her expression, trying to determine fast whether they were tears of joy or dread. He prayed the former, wanting his friend happy and wanting to be happy for her, as he had never before had the privilege of finding another life inside one of his patients. “You’re carrying Detraeus’ twins,” he confirmed, voice soft and — hopefully — comforting. “They’re tiny…Abronaxus, they’re so tiny, Ara, but they have heartbeats, both of them, and I can feel their energy, their first hints of magic. They’re healthy…I’m no expert, and I couldn’t tell you how far along you are precisely, but they’re there…and you’re their mother.” He drew his fingers back along her cheek, tucking hair out of her face and watching her. “Are you happy…?”

“Their...mother…” Ara repeated the words as she clung to Lith, happy to have the support from her friend. “I...I’m having twins.” She pulled away from him some, wiping at her eyes to clear away the tears that clung to her cheeks. “I...yes. I’m happy.” A choked laugh escaped her as she laid a hand back over her stomach. “I won’t deny it, I’m very surprised. I was taking those potions religiously. Except…” Her mouth formed an o and she laughed lightly. “Well, almost, I suppose. I did miss one night but I never imagined...I never…twins.” She moved back towards Lith, arms wrapping around him and hugging him tight. “Oh, I’m so beyond happy, Lithian.” She paused, wondering how Detra would take the news or how she would even break the news to him. “Nervous, but so very excited.”

Lithian relaxed as Ara seemed to adjust more to the news, and his fears that things might take a turn for the worse subsided, leaving room for more of his initial reactions to gain headway. With confirmation that she was happy, his smile spread, his eyes danced with his own excitement, and he returned her hug. When they pulled apart, he leaned in, pressing a kiss to her forehead and shutting his eyes as he did.
“I’m very happy for you,” he murmured, and he meant it. He had always personally hoped for children in his own future, even as a child himself: a big family, large house, and many voices filling it, much like the circumstances he’d grown up under. As his preferences in romantic partners had come more to light, that had become a far less likely, nary impossible, prospect. To see his best friend with such a future ahead of her, though, warmed him, and he was immensely relieved that they were not poor tidings to her. “They will be beautiful,” he said. “And if Detraeus loves you half as much as he seems to, he will understand how fortunate he is.”

“Yes, very beautiful.” She thought of Detraeus and his curly hair and dark skin mixed with her creamy skin and coal black hair. The babies would be beautiful, indeed. She worried about Detra, though, despite Lithian’s words. They had only briefly discussed children and had both decided that it was best not to have them right away. She could do nothing about it now, all she could do was wait for Detra to return from the job and tell him the news. “Thank you Lithian, than you so much.” She hugged him again and pulled away just as Casseth entered the room again.
Ara smiled up at him, opening her mouth to tell him the news but he cut in before she had a chance to speak. “I overheard.” A sheepish smile crossed his face. “Congratulations, Ara.” The smile turned into a full blown grin as he padded over to the bed and bent to hug her. “You’ll make a great mother.”
Before the evening had dragged on too much, Ara managed to finally get some food down and, miraculously, kept it down. Thanks, in part, to Lithian’s pulse of magic earlier. Once finished, Ara retreated to the bedroom, quickly preparing for bed. Exhausted as she was, it didn’t take her long to fall asleep. Dreams of babies and Detra filled her mind that night.
