"Heavy handed 'bout what? How did he carry on before?" Chel had a thousand questions and wasn't polite enough to relent for a moment. It occurred to her this was the first time she could possibly get anything.

She patted the giant's arm and said, "Anywhere you want, big guy! S'your time."

He made a noise in his throat, a deep thrum that reverberated and could be felt. Owain considered the vista around them: the dorms, the main HQ, the training fields, hunters dotting the premise. Everything was so small and yet sovast at the same time now that he was in a borrowed body.

"I will tell you what I can when we arrive at our destination. Are there any forests?" he asked, looking contemplative. "A jungle? A copse or park? Turf not previously claimed by combatants? If not, the beach will do."

"Hmmm..." Chel rubbed her chin, deep in thought. "There's a lil one over near the beach. Remember learning survival skills there once." She tugged the giant's arm gently, leading him to their newfound destination.

She patted said arm and added, "Are you gonna do some cool a** Groot s**t with the forest?" She could dream.

Brightening considerably, Owain followed her lead. "Groot is...the one from your, ah..." He struggled to remember the words. "Motion picture? Sadly golems have more restrictions than they do liberties; I do not even recall what I could have done had I more freedoms. But it is good enough to touch the earth with mine feet again," he declared with a fond smile. "What survival skills did you acquire there?"

"That sucks d**k. Must suck losing all your memories and s**t." She'd had many conversations with Tenebrae about his memory loss after witnessing the history between him and ... that strange woman. Weapons were certainly mysterious.

Skills? "Mostly s**t like how to climb trees to avoid predators, how to build a base camp without alertin' yerself. Borin' stuff." She grinned and poked Owain in the side, "And who says "mine feet" you old fart."

"All important skills to have," he noted with a nod, then chortled. "Sweet Chelsea, I do not emit gasses of any sort! Quite the opposite in fact, if what I have gleaned about your natural trees is true."

He tapped his forehead. "I will admit that there are some gaps I long to fill, yes...But what I wish for is secondary. My purpose is to be a weapon: to defend and support my wielder." A sigh. "Even if he is being difficult."

While Owain didn't seem like a dull individual to her, she certainly found him possessing an odd sort of stupidity to him. It felt like the kind that wasn't intentional though.

"Owain, you're more than a weapon bruh. You're still a person with feelings and s**t." Tenebrae stirred in her own mind, interested by such a subject. She knew Tenebrae's curiosity was ambient, malicious, ambitious. She dared not encourage him.

Once more the giant was poked in the side. "How's he bein' difficult? Maybe I can help!" It was very odd that Chel was the one offering help in such a situation.

"That, I do." He sighed again and his leaves rustled with it. "And when they run contrary to his will, matters become complicated."

They were at the edge of the forest now. Owain glanced back again to make sure Jack was still following, then nodded to Chel and ventured in. The Lifer remained at the threshold of the forest, watching them for a few moments before settling down, his back to a tree, his file carefully opened in his lap.

The giant didn't speak at first, his eyes turning skyward as they entered the little forest. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, relaxing. "Ah, to be in the shade again..." He shook his head like a dog, dug his toes into the dirt, and looked satisfied.

"I do not know where to begin, my lady, nor where the boundary between explanation and invasion of privacy lies...But it would pain me to add to your burdens," Owain said earnestly. "You have suffered enough, in no small part thanks to him."

Chel tried to pretend Jack wasn't there, because this was her time with Owain and she didn't want to feel cloistered by the leash-holder's presence for a moment.

"You wanna sit over there?" she said, pointing to a particularly flat looking boulder. It would make a nice sitting spot, to her.

She blinked a few times as he said "my lady" and then burst out laughing. "My lady- thas a ******** good one, bigfoot." She patted her tree friend on the back and said, "It's up to you what you wanna talk about- but I ain't gonna tolerate you actin' like I can't handle it!"

Spying the spot she meant, Owain nodded and strode over. Rather than sit on the boulder, however, he sat on the ground with a creaky grunt. Dirt was preferable to stone.

"I did not mean to offend," Owain said gently, digging his toes into the ground once more. "It is my nature to be sweet as he is sour, moreso because I know he has hurt you; monikers are my habit. If there is a preference for what you wished to be called, please let me know."

He hesitated and scratched behind his ear. "I do not suppose it is too bold of me to say that he has not been the same in weeks," he said slowly. "He has become more prone to violence."

Chel patted the bark around Owain's shoulder, figuring that analogous to head scratchies. "Naw, you can call me whatever you want sweet pea. Just givin' you are hard time."

As Owain spoke, Chel's eyes went glassy. The impact of the plate seemed to collide with her head once again, the memory of the moment being very visceral. She fought it.

"Do you know why...? Maybe we can fix it together 'er somethin'." Certainly Chel wouldn't mind beating some sense into Jack- hell it might even have been cathartic for her- but without knowing the source of the violence there was really no point to stopping him. "If it's just part 'ah him we can find some healthy outlets or some bullshit like that." She nodded, finding this appropriate. She didn't want to change Jack. Just help him.

"Oh. Oh! I see." He smiled a little, but it faded. "I have pieces of the puzzle," Owain said, "but I do not know the exact order. Originally I believed it was conditioning from the Sahara. What we experienced there..."

He shuddered, leaves and even his branches quivering. He dug his feet more into the ground.

"Now I am not so certain. Something in him has shifted since that mission, though I cannot pinpoint what it might be." He frowned. "What I do know is that when faced with doubt or with what he cannot control, he turns to his anger for succor. That is his constant." Jack had told her about the infirmary encounter with Peyton, had let her hear the black satisfaction in his voice when he said he tried to strangle her.

"Only recently has he slipped and lost control of it." Owain said as he eyed her sympathetically. "It is not just anger now but bitterness. Bile. An outlet would normally work, such as a spar, but I fear that it might only make matters worse at this time..."

As Owain shuddered and shook, Chel continued to pat him and pet the leaves of his hair slowly. She had a few splinters by the end of it, but those didn't matter much to her. Tenebrae could always pull them out later.

She took in what he was saying one word at a time. It did make sense, and Chel hadn't been without her suspicions. She had a generally good read of people; Jack was no exception save for the machinations of his mind. Rancor was not an unusual trait to ascribe to Jack.

Somewhat softly, she said, "You been dealin' with a lot, huh?" Empathy for Owain poured out of her immediately, though from what vessel she was producing the empathy was a mystery. It seemed even when she had nothing left, she continued to pour herself out. "Yer doin' the best you can, I just know it."

The next part hurt somewhat, but it was necessary. "Have you told Hanna yet ...? Seems like she'd be the one better equipped to help him ... you know ..." Her mind receded to Hanna's golden eyes, the way the girl so accurately summed her up in a single set of words.

Whatever it took to protect Jack. That was what was important.

Owain made a soft noncommittal sound in his throat that sounded remarkably like the kind Jack made; unlike his wielder, however, the giant was comfortable with showing strain. "I could say the same of you, my sweet," he replied, gently manipulating her hand until he could see the splinters. With fingers as thin and long as his, they worked well as built in tweezers. He looked to Chel for permission to remove them, his eyes bright with concern. "A lot has happened in a short time to us both. I know Jack. I do not know you, and thus I worry. My impression is that you choose to smile even as others dig at your roots, and that you reach out to others even," he glanced at the splinters, "as their thorns may p***k you."

Just because Jack didn't choose to see it didn't mean her behavior went unnoticed.

"Whether or not I can convey Hanna that information is up to him," Owain said with a frown. "I do not think, however, that he will allow it. She is perceptive enough; if he proceeds in the same manner, it will become obvious. Perhaps that is enough to stop him." He didn't sound pleased either way.

Chel felt her throat seize in a horribly weak way. "That obvious, huh?" She allowed him to remove the tiny pieces of wood, wincing with each one that game out. The tearing up came from the pain of the removal. That was it.

"You really think it'll stop him?" she asked, her gaze moving to the boy that sat at the base of the tree some distance away. "I ain't ever known Jack to stop doin' something just 'cause 'ah what other people are thinkin'."
