"Drama queen," Chel chided. Jokes and confrontation were better than communal misery any day in Chel's book. "Lots of people drink to forget s**t. You got a free card for it," Chel said with a lopsided grin.

Hands went behind her head, oddly relaxed. She internally cursed, realizing she'd left her juice out in the hall. No time to get it now. Not when Hanna's reactions were so much more interesting. "S'the joy of bein' humanity's savior, eh?"

Not that Chel believe in that, of course. She had her own reasons for being at Deus, and glory was not one of them.

Hanna didn't expect Chel to fork out the reason for the bracelet, not this jaded, brunette version of her. Instead, the girl seemed to itch for more contrary statements, like she was aiming to get a rise out of Hanna.

Her pen dotted an 'i' with a pointed click. "Humanity's savior, right," she echoed, dryly. Yes, Hanna believed their actions, in general, protected the average person, but she didn't see it going deeper than that. It feel more like a turf war than an altruistic endeavor.

"Drinking to forget it doesn't keep it from existing," she said plainly. "I'm fine just facing it. No point in running. Seems weak." The mention of drinking itched at her. It was drinking with Jack that had led to him sleeping with Chel, after all. Her eyes remained on the clipboard in her hand, scratching information into the pad with the precision and speed that Deaths seemed to have in spades.

Things were silent for a while then. Chel went to the control room and finally got herself her own chair. The pods whirred and clicked in their quiet way, Hanna read her book.

Chel counted the number of dots on the ceiling, just like she used to in high school.

An hour or so later, Chel abruptly said, "He tell you yet, or was he a little b***h about it?"

Hanna finished reading the sentence she was on, and then casually looked up at Chel, as if she had inquired about the weather. For a moment, she contemplated having some fun with it, playing dumb, pretending to be infuriated, but she went with her true feelings instead, which were a lot less over-the-top.

"Jack? Oh, yeah," she said.

And then she started reading her book again, just as casually.

Chel shrugged. "Long as you're cool with it." Her mind ate at her, wondering what that conversation had looked like. She didn't want to ask though, lest she look like the clingy b***h she was becoming.

It was silent a bit longer. Chel was debating questioning about why Jack hadn't slept with Hanna yet, but she held her tongue (something so rarely done by Chel). Something she was learning from Jack. Some subjects were best kept in her head.

Instead, she said, "You seen his tattoo?" Oddly docile.

A sigh pushed out of Hanna's nostrils. She closed the book over her hand to hold the page and then angled her face to look over at Chel. Her expression was bored, not angry.

"Look, Chel," she said. "Jack and I... well, we're Jack and I. That thing between you two was before we really hashed out what this thing was between us. He was up front about it when we talked about being a bit more serious, which was incredibly decent. And I like that about him. His honesty is refreshing to me. It would have been absolutely simple to lie to me and get away with it, but he didn't."

Fake relationship or not, that was true. Jack didn't have to tell her, but he did.

"That being said, I'm not interested in some weird pissing contest with you about his various body parts or whether or not I have been exposed to them. You guys are friends. I'm going to respect that. So I just need you to respect the fact that I am his girlfriend, and I'm not the crazy kind who is going to flip out because he had drunken mistake sex with a cute, available friend."

This conversation felt so real to Hanna that she forgot, for a moment, that her relationship with Jack was fake. Awkward.

"Woah there bridezilla," Chel lulled, oddly disinterested in Hanna's little rant. "His tattoo's on his shoulder. Fully exposed in a tank top. Was just wonderin' 'cause I think it's neat. Some science thing I ain't smart enough to get."

But this did tell her something about Hanna.

Hanna was more serious than Jack was.

"Fully aware it was Jack's mistake, ain't gotta guard dog your piece of s**t." She liked the way that sounded. Jack being a piece of s**t. "Seriously just makin' conversation 'cause it seems to be all we got in common." She shrugged very nonchalantly, because it didn't bother her. It did not bother.

Chel kicked back on her chair, tilting the legs back as she always did. "We can go back to silence, no thang."

Hanna didn't buy that the comment was benign. The confrontational nature with which Chel brought up the entire incident proved otherwise. She was throwing it in Hanna's face, and the Death trainee was not going to sit there while she continued to do so.

This Jack thing had Chel rankled. Jack had said it was a huge mistake. Had he failed to mention something else, like Chel having actual feelings for him and THAT making it a mistake? It might explain why the other girl was acting a bit territorial herself. "I was being up front with you because the passive aggressive thing was tiring," she said. "Not in my nature." With the strong implication that it was in Chel's. Hanna was still being civil, but her attempts at being polite were gone.

It was weird how quickly her perception of Chel was changing. She had seemed like this ditzy ball of energy who thought they should be friends with horseman yet held her own in a fight, all pink hair and smiles, when Hanna first encountered her. This girl in front of her was cut from an entirely different cloth. On another planet.

"The knowledge that I like coffee and books and you don't is so comprehensive, obviously," she said. "Clearly Jack is the only topic of conversation. Not, you know, the job, or the island, missions we've been on together, or any of the other million things two people stuck on a shift together can shoot the s**t about. Don't pretend."

Hanna shook her head and then opened her book again.

47 more minutes to go.

And Chel intended to fill those 47 minutes. "You're doin' that death thing where you read too far into my words? Deryk does it too," she said with a laugh. "Seriously, I didn't mean anything by it."

She sat back in her chair, wondering where Hanna was getting bizarre ideas from. Maybe it was like Sherlock and a tiny hair on her shoulder was giving it away? "Well I hate the island, ******** the job. Reason I got the bracelet bruh. Missions we been on together? Yeah let's talk about zombies, Finn and Ripley almost dyin' and me takin' 'em down 'cause Jack's too big a p***y for it."

Her grin was the same she gave Chris when they were wrestling. "What d'you wanna talk about? We got some time, might as well end it on the same foot ya know?"

Hanna drew her eyes together at her book. Less than a minute ago, Chel was suggesting going back to silence, but now she wanted conversation. The Death trainee had not even expected to see Chel during this shift, let alone to have some weirdness about Jack. Everything Hanna said, she felt like Chel disagreed with or discounted, aside from hair color. Even though Hanna said that she knew about the Chel/Jack sleeping together thing and that she was okay with Jack about it, that didn't mean that she was 100% okay with Chel.

Her mind skipped through the conversation. 'Bridezilla' and 'drama queen' felt like insults. Insulting Jack as a little b***h and a piece of s**t. Sprinting out of the room randomly when Hanna got up to check the pod. Calling what happened between the two of them 'Jack's mistake', not a mutual mistake. And then the whole part where she brought up sleeping with Jack in the first place. Was Chel right, was Hanna reading into the conversation too much? Or was Chel doing it on purpose and trying to feign innocence? Hanna did have a tendency to overthink things, but she felt right about this. It seemed like too many coincidences.

And now, Chel was moving back into neutral territory. Her book remained open, eyes on the page. "Not just the zombie mission," she said, tracing the book's edge. "We were together in one of the Towers. There was a reaper you knew." It was a subtle slide toward a conversation, one that Hanna would much rather have.

Chel's eyes glinted with something more serious than her normal lull. "Eh? The tower..." Chel said. Hanna had indeed found her weakpoint. "Knew a reaper, but Evan killed him a while back. Pretty sad, but 'as a life for Halloween s**t, right?"

She played it off in a way that made it very ambiguous whether or not Chel was serious. "Tower seems so long ago, sorry. Things get jumbled in my rock brain," she knocked on her head with a smile, as if to prove the point. "What happened to you during that big a** fight? I got stabbed 'n ended up in the moon tent. Sucked d**k I didn't even get to see the end of the fight."

Hanna's eyes were on her book so she missed any change in Chel at the mention of the reaper. Besides, the other girl breezed into a new topic quickly before any talk of it could really blossom. This was a friend of Jack's, weirdness or not, and though Hanna's tension toward her did lend credibility to the whole relationship bit, she didn't think making trouble with a close friend of Jack's would earn a thumbs up from anyone.

So she talked.

"I haven't been on enough missions just yet for it to jumble," Hanna mused. Plus, having a good memory was one of her strong points. "That zombie thing, though. That was confusing. I got knocked backward through another door. Ended up fighting away from you all. By the time I got back, the lights were back on, and I was surrounded by strangers. Hunter-strangers, but still strangers. I evaded the bites, but had to fend off some Mist who thought we were all infected."

Chel nodded. "Yeah. Finn went zombone and Ripley went crazy." Chel let out a long heavy sigh, putting her hands behind her head. "Just another day honestly." Possessions, especially it seemed. "I had to put Finn down so Jack could give 'em some cure thing. Did the same to Riptide, but Finn was huff and puff about it." A shrug came now, as if to further emphasize how completely mundane it all was.

It was silent for a moment, and Chel filled it by sucking on her straw and making an obnoxious juice box noise. "That the worst you been on?"
