The old instinct of lashing out again flared up, but he wasn't like Peyton: he knew how to keep it on a leash. The haze of pain he had let himself fall into had cleared, the luxury of suffering no longer so appealing. His stint was done, no matter how tempting it was to give Lex more than a haircut.
"No need to get so overdramatic," he said airily, though there was a glint in his eyes. "You caught me on the week everyone decided they were fed up with my s**t, that's all. People pick fights, I won't just walk away. Bruises are just taking a while to heal. Looks worse than they are 'cause I'm a pale ******** held his hands up in surrender and desummoned his weapon, trying not to wheeze as he breathed. All those bullets hurt, shield or no shield. "Next time you want my opinion on something, how about asking without your gun, huh?"

Lex gave a bit of a snort, desummoning his weapon as well.He may well have been a condescending, secretive and ever so slightly manipulative a*****e, but he knew a surrender when he saw one. Lex certainly didn't want to be on the receiving end of a misconduct write-up. "Believe what you want, Jack. Just don't put us all in danger." Lex warned calmly, the underlying threat clear in his eyes. Jack would be the first cull if he caused more trouble than he was worth.
"I expect to see you in a cot, resting. And the files for Hughes and any other cases you find interesting at my desk." He conversed, as though nothing had happened. I doubt I'd have gotten any answers with my mouth."

Jack restrained himself from eye-rolling and put on a proud smirk instead, as he often did when met with a threat. "I'm flattered you'd think I'm capable of that," he said. "Made my week, Jamil! But I've got to recover from all these hits first--doctor's orders--so expect the files to take a while. Unless, you know, you decide to do that yourself."
Lex wasn't his superior. A little more sass couldn't hurt.
"Later." Making a sign off gesture, he turned to head to the infirmary.

It was then that Ami walked by, seeing her boyfriend bruised and battered, and Jack doing somewhat worse for wear.
"Idiots," she muttered, continuing to walk by. If either one of them noticed or called out to her, she would pretend not to hear.
Because they were idiots.
