"You seem pretty well-adjusted, regardless." Ripley complimented idly; sure his opinion was based on a very small, brief sample of interaction, but at least he wasn't threatening, and he took to constructive criticism pretty decently. That was good enough for him, and whatever happened next, well, that was for vaguely future him to deal with.

"I'm not." He admitted, shaking his head. "I know how to fight in theory-" Today was surprising him, truth be told. He hadn't hit so consistently before in...well, his whole career here. Either Chance was terrible at dodging, or he was having a very lucky day. "I spend more time in the infirmary than I care to admit." Except, he was admitting it, which was a point he grudgingly accepted to himself. However, as he swung to strike again, and once more felt the connect of sword to shield, he couldn't help but say one more thing:

"Today is a fluke." He said out loud, with a small frown. He was so confused as to why he was actually doing pretty well, considering.

He laughed, unable to contain it, though it was as mild and laid-back as his smiles. "I'm not so sure about well-adjusted, but I like to think I'm pretty easy to get along with, even if I'm not the sort to go dancing around with positivity sign stamped to my forehead."

Hearing that Ripley wasn't as good as he was appearing to be was somewhat surprising, especially since his next swing sent Chance staggering back and falling onto the ground, his feet skidding out from beneath him. And he would have been lying if he'd said both the hit and his backside now hurt, but Ripley's apparent confusion over his strength was undeniably entertaining on a myriad of levels.

"You know, you're pretty interesting for a guy who says he spends a lot of time lying down," Chance said in amusement, and dragged an arrow into existence, threaded it onto the wire, and fired it up at Ripley from where he was currently still sitting on the ground. Then he stuck the end of the bow into the grass and used it to haul himself vertical again, wincing slightly.

"On this island? That makes you well-adjusted." Ripley shook his head slowly. "Still, you're already ahead of half of us, at least." Himself included. He spread his fingers and tilted his hand, in a kinda motion.

"Interesting?" Ripley repeated, his surprise over his pretty decent hits carrying over to this rather curious word; well, curious when in regards to him. "That opinion will change very quickly." He was boring, he figured. Quiet, private, serious, boring. He shrugged, and once more failed to sidestep the oncoming - and awkwardly angled - attack, this one grazing the left side of his neck - the side that wasn't already horribly scarred.

"I said infirmary." He corrected firmly, before his lips cracked into a grin he couldn't help. "But - you're not wrong." Once more, Wilhelm came down on the poor kid, and even he flinched at how little give he could feel on the other end. When he righted himself to put distance between them, his gaze went far off and to the side, as if listening to some invisible creature.

"I think this is where I stop." He continued to hold Wilhelm, but he raised his free arm to be more open. "You can keep practicing on me, if you want."

Chance gave a noncommittal shrug, but it was added to by a faint smile. "Well, I appreciate your appreciation of my apparently ability to adapt well to my surroundings. I am, in fact, a chameleon in human form, you just haven't figured it out yet."

There was a teasing note in his voice, and Chance's eyebrows rose, almost disappearing into the messy black curls currently flopped over his forehead. "Nah, I don't think so. I like to think I'm a pretty good judge of people, and isn't it that they always say to watch out for the quiet ones?"

But he'd at least managed to get a smile out of Ripley - one that looked genuine, at the very least, and not simply one placating him. Chance held up his hands in gesture of solidarity. "My bad," he said, grinning at the other man. "I should have specified infirmary."

There was one more swing and again Chance staggered, collapsing to his knees this time. He dragged the bow and arrow towards him, Asher letting out a little hiss, but he didn't have enough strength left in his arms to actually pull back on the bowstring. The weapon disappeared in a gust of pale, icy light.

"I think I'm good," said Chance, with a slightly hoarse laugh. He looked up at Ripley, smiling. "Damn. That was intense."

"Thank you for bringing me to speed." Ripley replied, offering a sarcastic bow of gratitude. "And for letting me in on the fact you are horrible at keeping secrets." Chameleons playing Human on an island filled with people that hunt monsters? Statistically not the greatest thing to be telling people.

"That implies I am a murderous psychopath." Ripley shook his head, though he sounded somewhat amused at Chance's suggestion. "-I promise I'm not that, at least." At the very, very least. "You're forgiven." He replied to the innocent mistake a moment later, internally fighting to get that grin off his lips and even going as far as to rub his mouth once with a gloved hand, as if trying to pinch it away. "But like I said, you still aren't wrong." He did spend an awful lot of time laying down, even without the infirmary trips.

The bow was dispelled, and so was his sword. Wilhelm burst and disappeared, reappearing under his sleeve in the form of a two-toned wrist watch.

"You are a quick study." Chance had improved by the end of the match, and greatly so. "That'll help a lot." He closed the distance between the two of them, and held a gloved hand down to the other man. "Need to to to the infirmary?"

"I said I was adaptable," Chance corrected Ripley with a smile. He put a finger to his lips as though hiding something, a playful glint in his eyes. "Not unreliable. Secrets that are meant to be secrets will stay secrets, especially if they're not mine to tell."

He shook his head in amusement and added, "Well, thank you for clearing that up, at least, though I'm pretty certain there's probably at least one murderous psychopath on the island, because doesn't every island need at least one?"

The way Ripley smiled - as though he was simultaneously unhappy that he was showing being happy - only gave Chance a terrible desire to try and needle him more, to see if he could drag it out a bit longer, but he let it go. Mostly. "Hopefully the part I was right about is the fun sort of laying down and not the painful I-can't-get-up kind of laying down," he said blithely, waving a hand.

He felt relatively out of breath, but he gave Ripley's hand a quick look before reaching up and grasping it, hauling himself to his feet. "Nah. I don't think that's the fun sort of laying down, so I'd really rather not yet. I haven't had the pleasure of having to go to the infirmary, so I'm hoping to keep it that way for a while yet."

A wince flickered across his pale face, in spite of this. Chance rubbed at the back of his neck. "But I do think resting in my room would be a good alternative."

Well, well, well...the tables had turned, and now Chance was correcting him. "I retract my statement." He conceded easily enough, waving a hand in the air as if to shoo the notion away. "And that is the way it should be." He nodded in agreement and approval to the bit about secrets - as a private man, and almost overly so, he was quite fond of keeping a great deal of things to himself. The secrets of others were just an extension of that.

"Oh, there are plenty here. Best watch your back." Since he had already taken himself out of that particular bundle of people, everyone else was fair game. Though he was also fairly sure he was regularly sleeping with someone who had that very potential.

Chance's blithe hope was met with silence and a continuation of that small little smile. It was amazing how often those two coincided, one way or another...

"Good plan." It was much easier for him to focus on something else, namely Chance's recovery options. "Let me help you, at least." After all, he did manage to actually win this one, and it felt so weird to not be the one in any sort of pain. The least he really could do was help Chance back to his room. His arm was offered to the other man, just in case. "What room are you?"

Chance smiled. "But it certainly keeps things interesting, doesn't it? I guess if you really wanted a normal, calm, safe lifestyle, none of us would even be here in the first place. Whether we're here because we're escaping from something, or we're murderous psychopaths, or because we really just like monsters doesn't really matter, since all of us are here, right?

"But, I will take your advice and watch my back, just in case any of those murdering psychopaths decides it's time for a new victim." His grin was directed up at Ripley, but since he was offering, Chance decided it wouldn't hurt to accept. "All right, that works for me," he said, and gripped Ripley's arm, wincing slightly as he limped forward a few steps. Maybe the other man's attacks had taken more out of him than he'd thought; he felt a little lightheaded.

"Room 196," he said. "Sorry. Kind of the far end of the hall, I know. But at least it means that I don't have to walk far to get to the staircase at my end; just means that I have to walk far to get to the actual other side of the building. It's also a little quieter, since I'm not right in the middle of things, which I like."

"Indeed. And it's certainly too late to take it back, now." Ripley shook his head slowly, taking a moment to run a gloved hand through his bangs before letting his hand drop, though not heavily, to his side. "Good," He said to his advice being followed, "There are more interesting ways to die, anyway." Like having your carotid ripped out and your jugular ripped open by a giant monster centipede. Those were good times.

"Ah. Not too far from me." Only a dozen or so doors down, really, and on the opposite side of the hall, but still. 171 and 196 weren't terribly far. "It's a decent spot." As far as sardines went, he added mentally. "You prefer the quiet, then?" It seemed a fair assumption, assuming of course that Chance wasn't making excuses to himself about the location of his room.

Idle banter, while not his favourite thing in the world, certainly made the long, limping trip back to the dorms a little more eventful. He moved at Chance's pace without complaint, especially considering that he was the cause for these injuries to begin with. It was the very least he could do. As they approached Room 171, Ripley paused.

"Do you mind if we stop here a moment?" He inquired softly. "I have bandages...and booze, if you need it." It was entirely up to Chance though - he hadn't even tried for his door. If the other man didn't want to pause, he'd just keep moving, and that was it.

"I think there was TV show about that or something," said Chance thoughtfully, tapping a finger against his chin. "All the weird ways people have died, or at least, something similar to that."

Chance gripped Ripley's arm as they moved, and while he wasn't terribly injured, he was both surprisingly worn out, a dull ache reverberating throughout his body that made him relatively tired, especially in his legs. "I do like the quiet," he answered, casting the other man a smile. "Well, I prefer it, anyway. Noisy has its time and place, and sometimes it's reassuring to have a lot of sound, but for the most part, I like the solitude that quiet can bring."

They hadn't yet reached his room when they stopped. Chance glanced up at the number on the door - 171 - and realized this must be Ripley's room instead, which was confirmed a moment later when he spoke.

"You convinced me with the booze," he said agreeably. "I don't mind stopping at all."

"...A thousand ways to die?" Ripley guessed, once more trying to draw from what little TV he managed to watch pre-island. He had always been too busy with work or drinking to really pay much attention, but when he did, he mostly remembered it. That particular show was something he watched here and there if he managed to catch it, for the fascination of it all.

"I like the way you think." The quiet was always his favourite place to be, though he also readily agreed that noise was also rather reassuring in its own way, when used properly and sparingly. He had always been the type to be by himself, in a room or house full of people.

Given permission to enter his own room, Ripley fished out a key from one of his inner pockets - all one handed of course, as his other arm continued to help support Chance - and unlocked the door to his room, opening it wide to allow the both of them entry. He wasn't about to lean the other man against a wall with nothing but a promise to be back, after all; no, instead he led him to his desk chair, and helped him sit if need be.

"Do you have a particular poison?" Though he had abandoned Chance to the desk in favour of crossing the meticulously clean and organized room alone, he at least continued to attempt to talk to him. He cast a glance at his bookshelf, every book organized in alphabetical order, and each a perfect inch from the ledge, and up towards the alcohol on the top shelf which, as the rest of the room suggested, was just as cautiously placed; this time, all labels facing forward perfectly, still in alphabetical order.

That was all it was; a glance. He then looked down, taking a messenger bag off of a coat rack behind the door, before opening a top drawer on his dresser, freeing a decent first aid kit from it. The kit went into the bag and the drawer was closed perhaps a little too quickly, which only left the alcohol to be grabbed now.

Chance snapped his bruised fingers. "That's it," he said. "I think I remember one of them being something about how some guy had gotten stuck in a hot tub or something and that was a bad way to go. But I only ever saw it maybe once or twice, when there was access to an actual TV around, which wasn't very often."

He smiled at the compliment; Ripley was apparently a man of few words, so being told good things about himself was a highlight, Chance had already determined.

The room they walked into felt Ripley-ish, if that was even possible from only a short meeting so far. It was clean and organized, everything in its proper place, everything pristine and carefully kept. Chance let his eyes roam around it, his fingers falling away from Ripley's arm as the other man stepped towards the shelf.

He eased himself down into the desk chair, because he felt it would be rude to sit on the bed without asking first, wincing slightly as he did so, his body yelling at him in protest at the movement. Chance had the distinct impression that his ribs and left leg were going to be relatively bruised by the next morning, and there were a few small, shallow cuts along his arm and leg from the sharp end of Ripley's sword.

"I like whiskey, if you have any," Chance said lightly, though he was frowning at his hand, which he'd extended out in front of him to examine. "But I'll take beer too, I'm not too picky, really. I like your room," he added, as an afterthought, a smile tugging at the frown. "It feels clean."

He actually had an answer - that was a thing of (admittedly minute) pride for him. Chance had given a vague description of a show, and he knew the answer. That never happened. Ever.

"About the same, for me. It was on, and vaguely interesting." Which was how he knew about it in the first place; it was more up his alley than, say, most reality tv. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the way Chance sat down, and internally flinched as he recognized all too clearly the signs of pain.

"Whiskey it is." Stretching to the higher shelf of booze, he grabbed a half full bottle - one of two whiskey brands on the shelf. He also approved of whiskey; it was a great poison, even if it got him into a lot of trouble here and there. At the comment of his room he smiled at his bookshelf, offering a soundless breath of amusement. "That's because it is." As clean as Deus could be, anyway. The smile was wiped off his face before he turned around, the whiskey and the first aid kit in the bag now slung over his shoulder.

"I can't live in clutter." That much would have been obvious by the state of his room, at any rate. He closed the distance between himself and Chance once more, again offering his hand and arm. "Think you can make it?" It was only a few doors left, after all.

kuroopu
PostPosted: Thu Oct 23, 2014 9:29 pm

He smiled, though it was partially a wince, because he'd accidentally jerked his arm in an attempt to get comfortable and smacked it against the desk. Jiggling his fingers a little, frowning at the reverberations along his funny bone, Chance leaned back in the chair and let himself relax a little, following Ripley's movements with an amused gaze.

"And that's good," he said lightly, still shaking his fingers. "Clean is better, I always think. Much more easy to relax when it's clean, and I always found I was much more productive when there wasn't too much clutter. Maybe that's why I did much better after moving out of the home," he added musingly.

Ripley's offered arm made him smile, and Chance reached up, grasping it and hauling himself to his feet.

"I'm - ow - good for another few feet," he said, though he seemed not entirely steady on his feet. He took a breath as though to steady himself, and then flashed a mild smile at Ripley, nodding.

"I'm good to go," Chance said, and would have saluted, had not it taken too much effort. "I appreciate the help, by the way."

"If you don't make it on your own, I'll drag you." It was probably meant to be a reassuring thing to say, but from him it likely seemed a little more threatening.

"Me too," He replied to Chance's good to go, and shifted a bit closer to the other man, in an attempt to get him to put more weight on him. The lighter he was, he figured, the easier it would be to walk. With Chance heavily on his arm he made his way out of his room, and paused long enough to lock his door once more. Then it simply became getting the last few doors to Chance's room; 196, as the other man said.

"It's the least I could do." He offered the ghost of a smile to his injured companion, and after the agonizing slow of the short trip (there was always a time warp when something was so close, and yet so far), finally paused in front of the other man's door. "Key?" He inquired, holding out his free hand on the off chance there was on.
