Venilia Side Story #1: Meeting Ailsa.

"There is some mistrust of humans among your people, I understand. I hope by working with you, I can help iron out any misunderstandings." The one with the soft teal hair pulled up into a white bow held a hand out to a pixie warrior. The young human woman looked at the pixie with bright soft blue eyes, and a smile. She then chuckled, feeling the tension. She hadn't identified herself to the famed wind warrior of the pixie clan, and understandably the pixie was more than reasonably questionable about a human popping up on her doorstep.

Venilia was dressed much unlike how anyone would expect a warrior. Her pixie counterpart was visibly armed, and it was only by the grace of Venilia's innocent appearance that a sword blade wasn't in her face. In a simple white dress with a basket of flowers, not even with a pair of shoes on her feet, Venilia had boldly come to Ventus, the village of the Clan of the Wind Pixies.

"And why would that be?" Ailsa asked. "Who are you?"
"I'm Venilia," she said, pulling a handmirror out from behind the flowers for a moment, then recovering it. "I am one blessed with the powers of water and wind, and I was born to be your ally."

Ailsa sighed, grabbing the wrist of and pulling the young woman into her home, for fear of panic arising from a human in their village. Safely inside, Ailsa stared at the human, wanting an answer and a few more depending on what the first one was.

"If I may?" Venilia asked, holding her mirror, gesturing that she was going to do something.

"What are you--" Ailsa was cut off with her own gasp.
Venilia held the mirror in front of Ailsa, the reflection of the pixie staring back her herself. The amount of power that quickly flittered from Venilia surprised Ailsa more than the magical object. No more than a half a second later, the mirror was flipped to its backside, and then lowered. The girl no longer wore the simple white dress, and even the flower basket was gone. In their place was a suited warrior standing still in front of the pixie warrior. She was no longer the sole magical sailor suited senshi.

The girl's outfit was a quirky mixture of blues. A soft blue tiara, subtly glowing at the center of her forehead, reflecting light off of her earrings. This same soft blue tied itself into a bow upon her chest where a golden locket set. Her choker and her ruffled skirt had the same deeper teal, though her skirt was lined with gold trim as were her gloves. The same teal drew a design down the girl's legs, and the navy upon her shoulders colored between the boot's design. Lastly, the blue ribbon tied around the mirror was a bright sky blue. Still, it was a sailor fuku all the same, and the aura of bright, positive energy shone from the young woman.

The girl before her re-introduced herself. “I am Typhoon Wing.” She moved her hand to gesture at her back, and a soft glimmer appeared there, the gossamer vanishing quickly. “Still, pixies can fly, so I’m sure you’re wondering how I even managed to get here, but that’s an explanation for another time. At least I think I’ve shown you enough to keep me off the pointy end of your sword, yes?” Ailsa gave the girl a hard look, but said nothing, so Venilia continued nervously. “We met briefly before, actually. You perhaps remember that nearby village, it’s gone a few years back, but you met with their leader and his wife. I think you met with them more than once, actually. I was just a toddler, but you were the most pretty thing I’d ever seen, and I couldn’t stop following you around like some baby chick.” Venilia’s face softened a great deal at saying this. “I swear I can remember you patting my head.”

Ailsa gave no gesture to this. She felt she had no reason to trust a human ever again, for causing the war that plagued her own people. She couldn’t entertain the random musing of this young girl, warrior or not. “That kind of thing only exists in the past.” She said coldly. “You have announced yourself as a warrior, and as a human, you are my enemy. You have a lot of nerve coming here, asking for my attention and my patience. You deserve neither.”

“This is more than a mere trinket, Lady Ailsa. Yes, I know your name.” She held up the mirror to her once more. In it, Ailsa could easily see the shimmer of three lights, blue, red, and green.

“Fuoco, Silva, Fiume.” Ailsa whispered with pain in her voice. “You can see them?”

“Sort of. I’ve been searching, with some help, the human encampments. See most people will let a girl with flowers in just about anywhere. Call it pity or trusting nature. I’m not like most of my kind in the respect that I possess magic myself. These objects. I can’t find them among my own kind. Perhaps it is not modest to admit, but I am stronger than most humans in regards to magic. I might not be well trained as your kin, but I know my power is nothing feeble. Those stones. Those who have been victims, perhaps blame the humans because there is some false comfort in the fact the items would be in the hands of a race who does not practice magic as a whole, or even in a large minority. Also, it make sense that if humanity wanted to fight pixie kind, they would need to acquire great magic to stand a chance, right? It’s a pretty believable cover up. Of course, no one is going to believe me. My kind I think has an inkling of being a scapegoat and instead of investigating the matter, they just blame the blamers. War has not brought out the best in my kind either, Lady Ailsa.”

“If what you speak is even true,” Ailsa responded. “Then who is responsible? I’ll admit it can be a tactic to have your enemy fight another of your enemy. It is not noble, but possible for someone who is trying to divide my kind and the humans.”

“I am sorry. Though I see much I’m afraid I am limited. I have only sparse experience with this mirror. I would like to ask you a question. Do you know the butterfly?” Ailsa offered no response, the stone faced warrior waited for the girl to speak more. “I first saw it the night of the fire. There wasn’t much left to my village when my parent passed in the war. I still managed to survive these long years,” Ailsa scoffed, correct in thinking the girl was about fifteen, “on the kindness of who was once left behind. Sometime ago, it was burned to the very earth, leaving nothing but soot. I nearly suffocated in the flames, and I saw a figure. I am certain, very certain I heard their voice. “Too bright of a power shone here. Let the pixies take the blame.” I will never forget it, the red eyes and the fire that burned my home. I awoke in that burned earth, as if the Papillion in my dream where a phoenix and saw fit to raise me from ashes, in this new garb as if my life had only begun that day...."

(Venilla left out the part that she actually woke up in ashes stark naked, and discovered her senshi form shortly there after. The story was just too embarrassing in full detail.)

This butterfly,” she held up the mirror once again, summoning a soft pair of wings, a red light form, hovered above the pane. “I am certain they are the first of us. The first one of us is the red butterfly, and there are more too. I feel this more strongly that the sun beaming from the sky in the day. Honestly, though, if I hadn’t met you when I was younger, I probably wouldn’t have found you now.”

Ailsa sighed. “And why is it you think I’m going to help you? Because I don’t need your fancy mirror to know that’s what you’re going to ask? I haven’t any intentions of allying with a human.”

Venilia bowed to her. “I’ll give you some time to consider. Surely, I have no loyalties except to the butterfly and another person who’s agreed to help, though he is not human either. Either way, I’m looking for our leader. I hope we’ll meet again one day.”

Ailsa was completely thrown by sudden intrusion, transformation, story, and abrupt leaving of this human girl Venilia. For Venilia walked willingly out the door, and before Ailsa saw it, the girl had vanished in the thin air.

Venilia Side Story #2 -- Rejoining Caelen
Venilia sat on the outstretched branch of a tree, swinging her feet spiritedly. She’d carefully snuck up the tree and patiently waited while a warrior below deftly swung and concentrated his energy into his weapons. When she saw his weapons were sheathed once again, she decided time had come to greet him. An overenthusiastic response it was, as she jumped onto his back, an arm around his shoulder, as to where he had to carry her piggy-back style.

“Caeeeleennn.” Her voice rang brightly for each vowel and syllable to his name. “Hello, was your mission successful?” She clung around the armored man’s shoulder to keep steady. Caelen with his armor had some spikes and edges to his armor that a usual person wouldn’t try to touch. He also had a streak of white hair on the front of his head while the rest was black. He had a nice looking face once you got past the armor, and since he was smiling despite himself, he looked quite pleasant to Venilia. “You know you look much better with a smile on your face.” She told him.

“You still haven’t found yourself some shoes yet I see.” He commented, keeping mum about the mission he just came back from.

“Don’t worry my feet are clean! I was just drying them. Besides, I don’t need shoes.” She insisted for the tenth time. “I walk carefully and I like to be in the grass, and I find my flowers there!” Venilia’s bright tone beamed out as pretty as the sunshine, which muffled Caelen’s sigh. He walked along the road, waiting to hear more and to figure out a destination now that he’d re-joined with the young girl. She’d cheered up considerably from when he’d met her a few weeks ago, caked in soot in a village he’d been too late to save. It even had frightened him for a moment, seeing the wailing figure, completely dark except for red bloodshot eyes. The child hadn’t really known human from demon at that moment, and went toward him, pleading for his help. After he cleaned her up, and realizing her immense distress and confusion, decided to find a new home to help the girl cope, a human village. He didn’t share anything about his role with the girl, thinking that even in this strange garb that she called a sailor uniform, and her obvious magical power, she was too young to enter the war that had burned her village.

“You can leave me, Caelen.” She said suddenly one day. “If you really don’t want me around, I’ll go. But you can’t possibly think that I’ll just find some happy life because you leave me behind. I have a destiny, and I am more than just a human girl now. I won’t ask for your support, but I could certainly use it. You told me you’re a demon.” She said, showing her the mirror, which in its reflection showed his red eyes, “I don’t really care, because I know you’re not like the others of your kind. That kind of makes us alike, in fact. There aren’t many humans that are born with magic. Even fewer that have this power that I have. I have to find them all, and I have to find the butterfly.”

Though he tried still to leave her behind, he saw her again and again near the human villages, picking flowers. She explained that she sold them, but it was more pity than anything. Still, she went on to tell Caelen there was much to learn when no one noticed much about you, and you knew where to go to listen. Venilia, through no prompting, was looking for the lost treasures of pixie-kind. Caelen had heard that humans were the apparent culprits, and pixies were blamed for the destruction of several villages, not just Venilia’s home of Windglenn. Odd that the human village that was nearest the Wind pixies was burned to the ground. In fact, Venilia helped confirmed some of his suspicions. “There is a greater enemy that delights in the pain my race and the noble pixies cause one another. If only I could find the great pixie warrior. I’m sure if I meet her, things could change, I have to meet with the Lady of Ventus, soldier Alnair.”

Caelen had assisted the girl in this manner, and thus was keen to know what might have come of his assistance to Ventus. The girl sighed now, her turn for some disappointment. “Nothing yet. Maybe I should’ve given her a way to contact me, but I would think she’d be able to. I don’t know. Maybe there is nothing I can do. But! I can’t give up.” Caelen chuckled, thinking of the girl’s determined face. “The mirror must have shown me what it did for a reason. If I’m able to do something about it, then I will. The world needs her, the strong and noble warrior of the pixies. She can’t perish.”

“Well what do you plan to do about that then?” Caelen asked her, wondering what the girl was possibly thinking of. What trouble was she going to get herself into?

“I have to find out why. Maybe if she won’t listen to me, I can find out what causes her death and stop it!” Venilia made a noise that determination. Caelen silently chuckled. This girl was a tiny bundle of trouble. The sixteen year old weighed about 90 pounds sopping wet, and yet she fancied herself taking on feats of terrible odds. He wished some of the humans fighting had her kind of spirit.

“Barton.”
“What about it?”
“Let’s go there!”
“Why?”
“I think the butterfly might be there.”
Ah. Yes, this elusive butterfly Venilia was convinced would win the war. Well, Barton it would be then.

In later days, Barton would suffer quite severely, but for the time being when Caelen and Venilia entered the town, it stood as a mesh. As a town clearly turned into half fort, walls and turrets, which were added around existing structures. Next to show of weapons stood a bakery. A few soldiers were muching on bread rolls while considering macs, lances, and spears. Venilia watched them as she clung onto Caelen’s back. He was about to put her down when they were stopped by the guards assigned to the town entrance.

“Is something wrong?” Caelen asked politely.

Venilia looked at the guard. “He’s my bodyguard. Can’t you let us through?” She climbed down and approached the ground.

Caelen observed the main’s rapt attention on Venilia. “I can see,” the guard smirked, “That a pretty girl like you would need protection. But if you need a body guard, I can be of service. Certainly you can understand, I’d be much better than a demon.” Caelen usually stayed away from the villages because of reactions to him, but at the same time Nilly had begged him to come with her, and to be honest, he was worried about the trouble she was likely to find herself in.

“Hmph!” Venilia stuck up her nose and crossed her arms. “I need someone that could actually protect me. You wouldn’t even beat me in a fight.” She scoffed loudly.

Caelen quietly observed, long used to the prejudice he experienced as one of demonkind who did not act as demonkind. He suspected he was going to have to clear up this misunderstanding, much like the ones before. Venilia had in her mind she needed to confront the arrogant soldier, however.

“Why what a silly girl.” The soldier laughed openly. “You of course don’t know how to fight.”

“If you’re so confident,” Venilia dropped her flower basket, her mystic mirror in hand, “Come on then!”

The soldier charged, sword in hand. Caelen wanted to intervene, but could see Venilia shaking her head. As the soldier brought down his blade in an overhead swipe, she swiftly moved, and the sword nearly met with the dirt. As he turned around, he was given an eye-ful of reflected sunlight. He cried out in surprise and shut his eyes, and Venilia easily used wind magic, which no one but Caelen could detect, to trip the man. She walked over the stood on the man, to keep him from getting back up. Venilia was light, but she could keep the man on the ground until he yielded, which he did after a few moments.

“May we enter the town?” She asked the other guard, who had just shaked his head at the whole affair. The man permitted them to enter, giving a quiet apology on behalf of the bested guard. “Let’s go.” She said to Caelen.

Part 0 (Prequel) History: Caelen Meets Venilia

gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star Though based off my original idea, most of this writing is Cel's work. I have her permission to post it here.

Dark times had stirred up once more on Gaia. Suspicion and animosity brewed by the day between the pixie clans and the humans. Caelen had the sneaking suspicion that they were being played against each other by some third contender yet unknown. The demon decided to do some investigating in an effort to determine what was happening. Caelen was on his way to follow up on a lead he had picked up when he saw a billowing column of smoke in the distance. Using his incredible demon vision, he zoomed in on the source of the smoke. To his horror there appeared to be a village on fire. People in danger always tugged at his tender heartstrings, and thus Caelen put on a burst of speed and rushed to the village. He was too late. By the time he arrived, the entire place had been raised to the ground. The smoke still issuing in droves from the charred wreckage would have choked any normal being. Caelen was born of fire and ash though; he was used to the flames of Hell. He listened carefully for any sign of a human heart beat among the rubble. It appeared the whole village had been wiped out. The essence of death hung heavy in the atmosphere above the village. Those who suffered death by fire were always restless, their spirits often unable to move on. Despair overtook the demon at having been too late to save even one solitary soul. A single tear trickled down Caelen’s face, etched with grief. That was when he heard the slight stirring.

He let his hearing lead him to the center of the village. To his disbelief, one little girl stood covered in ashes in the center of the village. How on earth did she survive this? He wondered.

Taking much care to avoid scaring the young girl, Caelen walked slowly toward her. He was about five feet away from her when she turned around. Tears streaked the soot covering her face. The demon could not tell if she was in any physical pain from injury, or if the tears were from emotional agony. For all he knew, it could have been both. He took a cautions step forward, and the girl quickly stepped back several paces. Fear was beginning to enter her expression alongside her sadness. Cae stopped. This would have to be handled very delicately or the girl would never trust him. Knowing submission to be the best tactical approach, he lowered himself to the ground down on one knee and lowered his head a bit. It was a classic submission position. He spoke very quietly and gently to the girl.

“Young one, please do not fear me. Doubtless you have been told all of your life that demons are nothing but evil. It is true that the vast majority of them are. I am the one exception. Even those of my kind cast me out and would rather be rid of me because I do not follow demon ways. I saw the smoke from afar and hoped to help save the village, but…..I was too late.” He ended in a choked whisper highly uncharacteristic of demon-kind.

Venilia probably should've been concerned with the fact her home village was in ashes around her, but full denial and confusion were in place. Her eyes screamed from the soot, mostly, and she couldn't even see herself that well. So why on earth did she have a handmirror now? She'd swiftly hidden it behind her when she heard a noise, a habit the homeless girl had ingrained in herself to conceal any precious object. She'd lived for about a decade on the scraps of her village since the death of her parents during the war.

Now she found herself trying to take a deep, calming breath, but her heart pounded as she saw a tall winged warrior and heard him speak. At least her ears where working right. At that moment she was grateful her long hair which, why that and she hadn't burned in the fire, was all that covered her besides soot and, more reluctantly, the mirror as she nervously tried to conceal her person. Somewhere a piece of advice came to her mind. An enemy usually intending to harm wouldn't give a name to their victim. Venilia tried, spitting ash, to ask the man's name. Between coughs the word "name" came out. Still, if there was anything she'd honed in her life, it was a quick judge of character. She hoped moving toward this stranger was the right move even though she couldn't speak well.

The girl’s voice rasped from the smoke that had gotten into her lungs. The only audible word Caelen could make out was “name”. Luckily, he had enough sense to catch the girl’s intended meaning. How careless of me. I should have told her my name up front. Caelen chided himself.

“Please, try not to strain your voice. You’ve been through a lot. In my haste I seem to have forgotten the most important thing. I am called Caelen Evernight. Although rarely used, I am sometimes known by my patron status as the Dragon Demon. What should I call you?”

He wasn’t sure why he had divulged his patron title to this girl he hardly knew. Something just compelled him to be open with her. He also found himself oddly wishing that he had been in a habit of carrying a water flagon, though he himself was not in any need of water. The poor dear just looked like she could use a drink to clear her throat.

Tears still ran from her eyes, trying to clear the soot from them. She made an odd expression, trying to communicate pain rather than fear. She blinked a lot which might have attributed to a curious look. After all, who wouldn’t be looking at the kneeling demon curiously?

Venilia inched closer to Caelen where he still knelt on the ash-covered ground. At least she hadn’t run away and seemed to be giving him a chance. Her big blue eyes gazed down at Caelen in both wonder and a lingering touch of hesitation. She was brave though. Her soot covered face was breaking Cae’s heart. He slowly reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out the only handkerchief he owned. It was so white and soft, he almost hesitated to ruin it, but then he chided himself for being so ridiculous about a mere replaceable possession.

“If you will permit me?” Caelen asked, holding up the white handkerchief. Venilia stared at first, but then nodded ever so slightly. Caelen brought the cloth up to her face and began to carefully blot away the soot. He figured conversation would help her to relax.

“I’ve heard that charcoal is good for cleansing one’s complexion, but I don’t think it suits a young girl,” He said, joking mildly. Venilia just stood there. Caelen’s expression softened.

“It can’t be easy to lose everything you knew. In all honesty, I can’t say that I know what it is like because I’ve never had anything to lose, save for maybe my life. But I understand the pain. Whether it is from loss or rejection or some other source of grief, the pain is always a difficult thing to bear.”

Caelen looked directly into the young girl’s eyes. She was so very young. She should never have had to go through such a trial. At that moment, Cae decided to protect her if he could, even find her a home if possible. She mattered to him. They were bound together mutually by pain, even if it was not from the same source. He would help her bear the weight of it as long as she would permit him to do so.

Caelen slowly stood up, his handkerchief an unrecognizable black scrap of cloth now, but the girl’s face was completely clean. He smiled tenderly at how youthful and kind she looked without all that soot.

“There now, you look a thousand times better. I knew there was a pretty face hiding under all that ash. Now, we just have to do something about the rest of you.”
Caelen frowned and crossed his arms over his muscular chest in thought. Clearly the girl’s clothes had been destroyed by the fire, but as far as Caelen could tell, all the black covering her body was ash. There were no burns. What strange power protects this girl, I wonder? He briefly mused to himself. Then he noticed Venilia just staring up at him and snapped out of his mental meanderings. Chuckling at his own tendency to let his mind wander, Cae spoke to the girl again.

“Well then, let’s get this soot off of you and find something to cover you up a bit. Don’t worry. I won’t have to touch you at all for this. There are a few advantages to being a demon. One of which is elemental power.”

Caelen drew in a good lungful of air and then carefully let the air out in a gentle stream in Venilia’s direction. The air blew the soot right off of her. Not one speck of ash was left. Even her hair was completely clear once Caelen was finished. A rosy blush colored the girl’s cheeks now that the ash was gone. Cae stared off to his right, a bit embarrassed, and then an idea hit him. In one swift movement, he unclasped the black and gold half cape from around his shoulders and placed it around Venilia. She was so much smaller than Caelen, so the cape, which was just right on Cae, completely covered Venilia like a shroud. After securing the cape so that it would not fall off of the girl’s slight frame, Caelen stepped back to assess his handy work. He chuckled.

“Well, I suppose it will do for now, but I think we’ll need to find something that fits you better fairly soon.”

Venilia gestured in a direction, and thanks to Caelen’s gifted sight, he could see a nearby stream. “Ah, alright.” He nodded to her.
Quietly, the odd pair walked over to the stream. As they got closer, Venilia ran up to the stream and quickly drank from the gently flowing water. It was ungraceful work, drinking and spitting up unwelcome ash from her throat, but she’d been running around nude moments before, so she hardly felt the need to care. “Ahhhhh, that’s so much better.” She said before taking more greedy mouthfuls of water. The soot was still a little painful, but she could speak without much trouble.

“Mr. Evernight...Venilia is my name. And those were the ashes of Lilly Valley I just climbed out of. And naturally, I have no clue as to why or how.” She glanced at her hand, “And I certainly felt those flames just the same as any ordinary being would.”

Venilia swallowed, going for broke, asking the question that torn at her mind above all other things, what she'd heard as everything around her had burned. She literally had no one else but the demon before her in whom she had chosen to place her trust.

"Why is someone trying to get the humans to blame the pixies? Why is the there a light that shines too bright here?.....Why....."

She looked at the mirror, which took on an ethereal aura and shine. A high pitched sound signaled her surprise, and in a way, she received her answer. She parted the cloak and spun around, high pitched as the cloak parted and revealed the senshi garb and, even more curiously, a pair of nearly invisible wings that caught the gentle light of the fading sun.

“No!” She shook her head, and pulled the cloak back around her, “I don’t want to be the reason! I don’t want to be like this! I don’t understand! I don’t understand!”

Just as quickly, another gentle gleam of light withdrew the senshi form from her person. She pulled the cloak around her and sank to the ground. She shook in her emotional distress.

Caelen knew that the girl was distressed, but he was unsure as to what had caused it. She had seen something that he had not. Mildly baffled by Venilia's state, Caelen cautiously approached the girl where she had sunken down in the dirt. He tenderly placed a reassuring hand on her small shoulder and spoke to Venilia, trying to calm her.

“While I am unsure what it is you saw, we do have one thing in common. I myself have been searching for answers to the growing animosity between the pixie clans and humankind. This fear and mistrust should never have occurred. Why now of all times, I wonder? I doubt very much that an innocent young girl could possibly be to blame for all of this. Don’t put the burden of blame on yourself. I have a feeling there is much more to the situation than anyone realizes. As much as I hate to get others involved in potentially dangerous situations, I would ask that you come with me for now. I may be able to find you a home along the way. On my honor, whatever happens, I will protect you. ”

Caelen gently placed his hand under Venilia’s chin and lifted her head to meet his gaze. He hoped he wasn’t being overbearing or too presumptuous. He knew of several small villages and one or two slightly bigger towns along his current mission route that would more than likely take in an orphaned girl. The trick would be for Caelen to keep out of sight so that the locals would not fear the girl because of her association with a demon. He wanted to stick close enough to her to make sure she was accepted by trustworthy people.

Venilia took several deep breaths, trying to calm herself. She was willing to follow Caelen wherever he was going to go.

Along the way, Venilia started stopping every now and again as she spied a wildflower. She began singing quite the silly song. “See a flower, its face knows where it’s bright. Pick and sweetly kiss the light.” She hummed and tied flowers together. After a while, Caelen was being to realize she was not just dragging her feet to play with the blooms. There was a flower crown on her head, and her eyes were heavy.

“It’s very far to the next town,” she said. “I’m sorry. I don’t usually walk so much,” she said, rubbing her eyes. “I’ll try to keep up.”She said this, but looked as if just standing were too much for her.

Then, much to her surprise, Caelen lifted her and carried her on his back. “I do not require rest, so I will carry you for now. All you need to do for the time being is sleep.”

He’d safely stowed her mirror away somehow.

Venilia, a little surprised, wrapped her arms around his neck and tried to sit politely as he carried her piggy-back style. She was still very much wrapped in the cloak, and as only a few moments passed, she settled down. “Thank you, by the way,” she said, and not long after she drifted off.

Part 0 Continued (aka, Chatterbox Venilia) xD

Caelen continued along the path that only he understood, Venilia still asleep on his back. It was so easy to carry her around, she was so light. He figured it would be a quiet and uneventful journey to the nearest village. Cae would drop her off, staying long enough to make sure she was accepted, and then he’d get back to his current mission. He frowned slightly as he thought about what is was that had dragged him out this particular way in the first place. Pixies and humans battling it out and blaming each other for things that made no sense? What on earth was going on?

Venilia shifted slightly on Caelen’s back. He though she was dreaming and would go back to sleep, leaving him to his silent brooding. Wrong! If there was one area in which Caelen lacked any experience, it was with young inquisitive girls. Venilia stirred, blinked her eyes open, and stared out at the landscape for a moment. The nearly full moon was still inching its way to its zenith in the clear night sky. The constellations glowed bright against the velvety blackness of night. Venilia looked around but couldn’t see very far even with the moon unobstructed by cloud cover.

“Where are we?” Venilia asked.

Caelen cocked his head slightly to his right since the girl’s voice had come from that side and said, “We’re still travelling the valley lands. It is yet a fair distance to the nearest village. We’ll probably get there just before dawn if nothing hampers our journey.”

Venilia made a sound like she was contemplating what he had said. For a second, Caelen wondered if she was worried about night travel.

“You’ll be alright as long as I am with you. You can go back to sleep,” Cae said soothingly to Venilia.

A slight breeze had picked up. It danced across the valley, tugging playfully at Caelen’s rather long locks. It ruffled his white streaks, making them look like crazily floating feathers. Venilia perked up as she noticed this, and giggled.

“Why are there white streaks in your hair?”

The question was unexpected, catching the demon off guard. No one had ever really asked him anything of the sort.

How should I respond, I wonder? Caelen thought to himself. He was about to give an answer when the girl shot another question at him.

“How old are you?”

“Well, I-” he never had a chance to complete his sentence.

“I'm fourteen by the way.
How'd you get a name like Caelen? It's really nice. My name comes from the wind and the ocean. My father was a sailor before he met my mother. They died when I was about four, but I remember the stories they told me almost every night. Hey, have you ever been on the ocean? Is it nice? Is it pretty? I hear you can see the sun sink into the water and rise up out into sky. I've seen lots of sunrises and sunsets because everyone can watch them. They're free to us all. Oh, and wildflowers, but don't tell anyone I said that because I need to sell them,“
Venilia rattled off rapid fire, barely stopping to take a breath in between sentences.

Oh good gravy, what have I gotten myself into now? Caelen wondered, feeling a tad dizzy from Venilia’s sudden barrage of questions and chatter. Poor Caelen. It wasn’t over yet. Venilia started in on a whole new line of questions almost immediately.

“Do you always wear armor? Do you have other clothes? I know I only have, well had a dress but then again I kinda have armor too, I think! I wonder why my form doesn't have actual armor? That would be awesome. I could wield a sword, right? Can you teach me how to handle one? I want a huge sword so nobody can think I can wield it but then BAM! I'm awesome. So we need to make that happen,” Venilia spoke excitedly, practically bouncing on Caelen’s back as she grew more excited with her whimsical ideas about fighting and weapons.

Caelen came to an abrupt halt. He stood silent on the grassy valley floor, staring down at the ground. His sudden change of pace took Venilia by surprise. The girl wrapped her arms more securely around Caelen’s shoulders, trying to scoot herself up higher on his hips to so she could get a closer look at his face.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen? Did I say something wrong?” she asked, her voice trembling a bit.

Caelen crossed his arms over his chest and remained silent for a few moments longer before answering Venilia. He stared at the ground as he spoke, his voice subdued with the heavy experiences of the past.

“I will answer your other questions in due time, but there is something you need to understand first. War is nothing noble. It is mass murder if you get right down to brass tacks. There is no honor in killing others. I have fought in many a war, and believe me when I say that death is not something to disregard or take lightly. To wield a weapon is dangerous. You have to learn to be responsible. That means knowing when it is more prudent to spare a life rather than to take one. Once a life is ended, there is nothing else on this earth. Sure, one may remain tied to the earth as a ghost, but it is not life, merely a pitiful shadow of what once was. I don’t want you to get any romantic notions about war and fighting. I have had to kill in my time, and I have never taken any enjoyment from it. Every last life that I have extinguished still haunts me to this day, and it always will.”

With a soft voice she responded. "I wonder if the one who burned down my village and everyone I knew, would have any regrets about it like you do." She had things much scarier to her than wielding a sword. "And being able to do nothing." Or at least, she was starting to know that she would be more than doing nothing in the next four years. The strange knowledge that crept into her dreams and told her things. She had gone on and on because it cancelled out the noise in her mind, that she was yet to truly comprehend her awakened ability.

Caelen began walking once more, now that he had made his point. He sincerely hoped Venilia understood the gravity of what he had told her and would take it seriously. He continued on for some moments. The silence was somehow deafening. He realized Venilia was being awfully quiet.

“What’s the matter? I thought you were full of questions?” Caelen asked lightly, trying to improve Venilia’s mood.

The girl shifted a bit and spoke in a small voice.

“Oh, it’s nothing. Maybe I said too much.” She was extremely pensive but not quite at what Caelen had said.

Caelen shook his head and said, “No. You are young and curious. That is no crime. It’s just that you have much to learn about the world and how things work. But I suppose you can’t learn unless you ask questions. Now, I told you I would answer your other questions, and so I shall. I do keep my word.”
After a moment, Venilia rested her chin in the dip of Caelen’s right shoulder and asked, “You’ll still really tell me everything?”

Caelen chuckled and said, “Yes, silly Nilly. Now, if I remember correctly you wanted to know why part of my hair is white. That is simple. My hair is dual colored for the same reason your hair is blue. It’s a little thing called genetics. As for how old I am, I am almost as old as this world. I was among the first beings created by the children of the Goddess Gaia. There are among my kind twelve elite demons whose power and age surpass all others. To put it in more common terms, they are like royalty. I’m not one to go around talking about it, but I rank among those twelve elite, known as the First Born. I have existed for many a millennium, and will continue to exist as long as my life is not put in danger.”

Caelen stopped talking briefly to allow Venilia a chance to process this information before continuing.

“I’m not aware of any special meaning attached to my name. All I know is that it was the name assigned to me by those who created me. I’m perfectly content with it. You wanted to know if I had ever been to the sea. I have, many times. I have seen the sun rise and set over the azure waters so many times I can barely keep track, but each time was unique and beautiful. The tide ebbing and flowing is like the earth breathing in and out. I think if ever I get the crazy notion to make a permanent home anywhere, it will be at the seaside. Salt air and seagrass have a certain draw to them that speak of freedom and adventure.”

Caelen paused once more, smiling at his own ramblings. He truly did love the sea. It instilled a sense of peace in him that he was hard oppressed to find anywhere else.

“What about everything else, Venilia asked, a bit impatient now that she was getting an information download.

Caelen shook his head in mild amusement and continued.

“What was it again? Ah yes, the armor. That is a bit of a complicated question. You see, demons have what is known as a true form, and then the form they take to blend in with mortal society. What you see now, armor and all, is my true form. Out here away from the ever judging and mistrustful eyes of mortal beings, I am free to have this form. If I were to go into a populated area though, it would be more practical to take on a humanoid guise. This armor is what I was created with. Demons don’t really have material possessions. What we can do is change our appearance. It doesn’t make the armor go away; it just changes its form. As for weapons and fighting, you already know my viewpoint on that. You will only learn the art of swordsmanship if those who take you in wish you to learn it, I suppose. You are a young girl first and foremost. Don’t let your years of innocence slip away in a rushed effort to become a fighter. And for the record, the size of one’s weapon has no bearing. It is one’s skill and precision that truly matter. You can’t properly use a weapon if it is so big that you practically fall over.”

Now that the girl’s questions were sufficiently answered, Caelen resumed his silent trek, letting his mind wander here and there as he continued on through the valley country. Venilia was quiet for quite some time after Caelen had answered her plethora of questions. There was still something she needed to know. Out of the silence, Venilia’s voice came like a sudden shock.

“So why are you travelling anyway? Do you always travel alone? Do you have any friends, besides me of course?”

Caelen cocked his head to the side in thought. Once again her line of questioning was unexpected. While he did not want the girl to get too deeply involved in something that she was far too young and unprepared for, a small bit of information couldn’t hurt. Besides, her village, a human village, had just been burned down, and not all that far from a pixie clan either. She seemed to believe she was responsible for what was happening for some reason. It made Caelen wonder.

“If you must know, I was on my way to do a bit of inquiring at several human villages located close by known pixie clan villages. Something has set in motion a bout of ill will and mistrust between humans and pixies. This has never happened before. It could lead to an all-out war. I’d like to prevent it if possible. The only way to do that is to get to the bottom of the current situation. Pixies are naturally a bit suspicious of outsiders, especially large groups, so it is best to work alone when dealing with their kind. But, I’m no stranger to being alone. That has been the story of my life. My own kind despise me for not acting like a ‘proper demon’. Mortal beings hate me because they think I am just another denizen of Hell that will corrupt and ruin them. I can’t win for losing. So in answer to your question, no, I have no friends.”

Caelen thought a moment, realizing what Venilia had said in her last statement.

“Except for you,” he added, smiling. No one had considered him a friend before. While her acceptance of him might have been a bit naïve and premature, it still touched him that she was willing to look past all of his hang-ups. Caelen looked up at the deep night sky with all of its shimmering stars and sigh in contentment.

“Hmm, it really is a beautiful night,” he said and walked on in companionable silence with Venilia.

Part #3 -- Meeting the Butterfly

If there was a pretty part to Barton Town in this era, it was a small grove in it's northwest corner. Normally Venilia would be with the plethora of blooms, little flowers of blues and pinks which normally would've been plucked and put into her basket. Instead, she listened to bright voices, children playing with little care for the tumultuous world outside of the tree-lined haven. There was one girl, older, closer to Venilia's age that did not play but quietly watched over the tiny oasis of innocent joy. A brightly colored set of wings landed on the equally vivid hair of the quiet young woman. Venilia nearly leaped out of her skin, her foresight practically screaming at her.

"It really is her." She said almost inaudibly to Caelen. "I'm going to go talk to her." Caelen nodded. He would stay back and observe.

Venilia slipped out of her new boots, and pretended not to see Caelen's small look of exasperation at that.

Venilia slowly walked over to the girl, taking careful steps in the grass. Almost as though she approached a sleeping animal, she tread carefully into the grove. She approached and said to the girl, "Butterfly..."

"Pardon?" She asked Venilia.

"Zinny, Zinny, look!" One of the young children ran up to the woman, a rather dirt covered boy, "Look at these flowers!!" The young child had a bundle of them and shoved them, dirt and all, up to the one being called "Zinny."

"Those would look nice in a flower crown." Venilia interjected, seeing the woman's face trying to smile at the child despite the clumps of dirt landing on her.

"Ooooh! That would look nice. I don't know how to do that though." Said the boy.

"I can show you." Venilia sat down on the grass and took the flowers. The boy ran off to play with the others. She carefully stripped the flowers of their excess leaves and dirt.

"Why did you say butterfly earlier? Who are you?" asked the girl while she brushed the dirt off.

"I am Venilia. And you have a butterfly in your hair."

"Oh!" The girl turned and the little insect fluttered away. "I am Zinnia."

The butterfly's name was Zinnia! "Pleasure to meet you, finally."

"Finally?"

As Venilia tied the flowers together, she said, "You're named for a flower yourself? Do you often have butterflies confuse you for the real thing? Do you often have strange meetings like that?" Venilia was being purposefully cryptic. "I am something of a refuge of war. I haven't been able to settle in one place though. I've had this dream where I'm chasing a butterfly. I've seen it ever since I survived my village's fire. I had this crazy notion" Venilia finished the flower crown and placed it on Zinnia's head, "That the butterfly saved me. And I've been wondering why ever since."

"I'm sorry but I don't know what you mean. I've seen butterflies. I've seen people hurt by the war and tried to help them, but I've never heard a story like yours."

Venilia felt a little frustrated. This person sitting in front of her what the reason why she'd looked everyday for an answer. Here she sat, insisting that she wasn't what saved Venilia. Venilia did not believe this at all, but she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Zinnia was the butterfly, and the one who could lead the warriors to victory in this war.

They walked the children to their homes, and then it was just to two young women. "There is a pixie village, I once managed to get in and see their warrior." Zinnia looked at Venilia a tad surprised, but said nothing. "She didn't seem to know what I was talking about either. But she seemed very interested when I showed her my uniform. I wonder how many there are..." Venilia again, cryptic."There is a pixie village, I once managed to get in and see their warrior."

"This must have been before the start of the war." Zinnia noted.

"Nope!" Venilia said brightly, then frowned. The ground was shifting in her mind's eye, she saw the lines of dark energy tumble over the town, and felt the sheer force of radical change. Then she flipped back

"What's wrong?" Zinnia detected the shift in Venilia's attitude from mysteriously lighthearted to frightened and apprehensive.

"You can get the people out of this town, can't you?" She asked. "They trust you. They don't know me but I need you to believe me when I say, this town is about to be taken over by a force that it can't handle."

"What? How on earth would you know such a thing?"

"The same way I knew how to find you. I keep seeing it. I keep seeing a red butterfly, a power that can counteract the chaos, but you can't alone. I am here to help you! However, things are looking bad here right now. My town, my town burned to the ground, and I couldn't save anything I thought I'd died myself! I don't want that to happen here!" Venilia said in a hurried whisper. "Please..."

Zinnia nodded in understanding. "We can fight."

"Not what's coming. There aren't enough of us yet. We need everyone. Whoever everyone is, we need all of them!"

Zinnia nodded, and before Venilia could even believe it, she'd stood with Zinnia as she contacted the leaders of the town and with impressive charisma, convinced them to evacuate. Venilia could scarcely believe it, but as she felt the dark energy approach, she was grateful.

"I'm sorry. Your home, we can get it back one day. I know it." She told Zinnia as they were at the end of the group leaving the town. "Don't look back." Venilia then said, stricter, knowing what was happening as they lead the villager away. The town was being crushed, twisted, and turned into another place entirely. Already she was trying to protect her butterfly, because the dark forces already snapped at their heels. "We'll find the others soon."

Venilia Side Story #4 -- Meeting the Twins

“But I KNOW something's here.”

“I can sense the auras, too, but that doesn't mean it's what you're looking for.

“Multiple auras. It might not be a senshi.” Venilia frowned. “But now that we know we should investigate." Caelen wasn't wrong, it could be another spike of negative energy. Another person, another strange occurrence that needed to be healed...

“I'll investigate. Why don't you get something to eat, Nilly?”

“If you want me to leave you alone Caelen, all you gotta do is say. Then again, I forget how polite you are.” Venilia laughed.
Caelen sighed, as he often did, and took his leave silently, realizing she wasn't going to calm down until she knew she'd found the source of the aura, but at least she seemed in better spirits.

Food did actually sound good, and now since Caelen insisted she have some money with her, she could afford a nice meal. So she headed toward the establishment that looked the most lively in the small town. She wasn't even sure it if had a name yet, since towns were popping up and disappearing frequently these days.

Still, this one looked fairly peaceful. Until she entered the bar.

A girl with vibrant orange hair was yelling at a group of three men. Venilia wasn't sure why, but the three men were looking quite menacing at the girl. “Now I beat 'ya fair and square. Pay up.”

“Terra, I told you not play bar games.” A quiet voice nearly on top of the door said. The girl had long teal hair, and while her stature was slimmer and her hair a greenish tint, bore a great resemblance to the stronger looking, larger girl requesting apparently proper payment. The calm girl read a book, a rare and expensive item to have in this time.

“I'll pay you, but not in gold.” One of the men said. “How about a kiss?”

Venilia felt her hand curl into a fist, she was so tired of hearing this sort of jibe. She was about ready to punch a man twice her size over it when she saw a broom in Terra's hands. Suddenly, the jaw of the man with the mouth was slammed into with the pole-end of the broom. Venilia gasped, startled at the aggressive active approach by the girl.

“If you want to kiss something, I assure you it won't be something as pleasant as you're imagining.”

“I just wanted to get some food and read,” The teal haired girl sighed, “Why does it always end up in a fight.” She flipped a page, “You can just let her handle it. She'll be done in a minute.”

“She will?” Venilia looked at the girl, whose teal hair was a softer, brighter shade than her own, seemed completely calm despite her companion's scuffle. The one who had been hit on the jaw now had a bloody nose. Venilia looked, mesmerized by the girl taking on the men. Now one was on the ground.

“Oh, certainly. We have fun like this, all the time.” She said, flipping another page.

“Oh um....” A waitress came up even as Venilia didn't know what to say. She decided to order some food and drink instead, ordering a little extra in hopes to entice the girl to keep talking. Venilia had detected the aura of wind from the reading girl and earth aura from the other girl. “Well, you sound like you really know her.”

“Oh I've known her all her life. I am but a few minutes younger.”

“Twins, wow.” Venilia was an only child and a bit of a lonely one as well. “That's amazing having someone with you your whole time.”

“Sometimes it is.” A loud THUD was heard as a chair slammed into a wall. “Sometimes it's not.”
“Mind if I ask your name?”
“You should give yours if you're interested in proper manners.”
Oh my. She was giving off a vibe that she was more than what she seemed.
“Venilia.” She said as way of introduction.
“Aeris. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.” It was the first time the girl in glasses paid more than a monotone to Venilia, and actually looked at her now.

Venilia carefully reached into her flower basket and touched the mirror lightly. “Terra! Duck!” She called over to the orange haired girl. Terra, surprised, did so and missed a rather nasty looking punch. She then knocked the wind out of her last opponent and jauntily retrieved her winnings, walking over to the two girls. Since the food had just arrived, Terra looked pretty happy, then surprised.

“Aeris, did you make a friend?”
“This girl says her name is Venilia. She's the one who ordered food, not me.” The twin responded.
“Aww.”
“Please help yourselves. I think my eyes ordered instead of my stomach.” Venilia almost regretted saying. Terra's appetite for food was about on par for her appetite for a fight.

“You gonna eat that?” She gestured toward something on Aeris plate.
“Do you want to take it from me? Aeris said coolly. Venilia quickly got the impression these two might have gotten into scuffles with each other before.

“Maybe.” Terra said, hestiant.
“Wouldn't that be poor manners for our acquaintance here that bought this food for us?”
“Yes.” Terra withdrew.
Venilia laughed, “You two seem really close.”
“I suppose so,” Aeris said as Terra said, “Sure are!”
“Do they always serve this soup?” Venilia politely wondered. “It's quite good.”
“Wouldn't know.” Terra said between bites.
“Terra.” Aeris said quietly
.
Aeris was rather sharp. Venilia tried to seem innocent in her questioning, but the girl who barely looked away from her book seemed to be noticing everything regardless.

“So you're travelers as well?” Venilia asked politely, still feigning her innocence. One quick brush of her mirror and two distinct auras had told her already what we need to know. “Where are you headed?”

“No where in particular. And yourself?” Aeris calmly replied.

“No where in particular.” Then Venilia had the kind of bad feeling that made her reach for her mirror. One of the men Terra had fought off was still on the ground. “Get back you two.” Venilia said with strict seriousness. She stood up and stood in front of the table such as the man leaped up. He screamed with sudden rage and his eyes were filled with red, but more than bloodshot. All white was gone and all calm with it. The young barkeep had ran for help seeing the large individual raise up so strangely.

“Oh, come on I can handle him again.” Terra said, trying to walk forward. Then she stopped, seeing the strange aura around the man and the red in his eyes. “What is wrong with him?” She said, uncertain.

“Negative energy.” Venilia said evenly, stock straight and serious, holding her arm out to keep Terra from moving forward.

“You can't possibly take that person on?” Aeris said worried.

“Don't worry. I am more than what most people think as well.” Venilia responded. “Now please quickly move over to the opposite side of the room.”

The man charged forward, moving toward the girls. Venilia jumped, launching herself over the negative energy filled individual. She landed neatly as the man charged and tumbled the table the girls had been at. Terra had grabbed Aeris's wrist and pulled them over as directed by Venilia.

Venilia lifted her mirror as the man was distracted. “Rainbow Mist!” She shouted, and a pale multicolored haze poured out of the mirror and wrapped itself around the strange individual. Immediately they collapsed, all rage evaporating.

The twins looked at the man, once again unconscious, and then back at Venilia.

Before they could ask Venilia what on earth was going on, they saw another individual enter the bar. Aeris gasped in surprise.

“It's okay. He's a friend.” Venilia said quickly with a smile. "Hi, Cae."

“I assume you took care of that negative energy.” Caelen said, walking in, and politely he addressed the two girls. “Hello.”

“So, that's taken care of. I guess we need to head back to Barton now.” Venilia said.

“What is going on? What just happened?” Aeris just gaped at Venilia.

“No where in particular, huh?” Venilia smiled at Aeris. “Or where you looking for something yourselves?”
