Otto thought on his feet. Leaping across his desk, spilling paperwork, he slammed his open palm against one of her wrists, yanking the gun deftly out of her hands "No! You do not kill another member of this Department. Otherwise.... well I know exactly who those spooky bastards who dropped you off are. " Flicking the safety back on, he strode across the room and put his hand on Sam's shoulder. "Sam, this is Probationary Agent Thirteen. She's been assigned to us by you know who." Turning to Thirteen, he flicked the safety back on her pistol and held it back as he walked over. "Thirteen, this is Junior Agent Thanati. Or Sam. He works with us. He's the one who handles our online investigations. I was there when he identified the location for where we're going. Pick up the Harry Christmas Reports." Wearily, he bent down and grabbed at the scattered field investigations paperwork and pulled out the one he sought. "Now, the pair of you shake hands and get your coats. We're going into the field. To Mount Vernon Home For the Blind."

Before Otoo could answer him, the new girl assaulted him. Shocked by her fluid and fast movements combined with the end result being a weapon pointed at him, he fell back onto his rear, smacking his head on the wall. Thankfully his senior stepped in before things got messy... messier. He managed to return to his feet by the time Otto was explaining their new coworker.
He exhaled, "Darn, I guess I'd better be more tidy with a lady in our midst from now on." Making a mental note to remember to bathe more frequently despite knowing he would forget, his attention returned to Otto's introduction of him to Thirteen. He nodded, "Yeah, I'm the data crunching apprentice around here, so I guess you outrank me too." He stepped forward at Otto's directive to engage in the formalities of first meetings with the rigid woman.
With the order to move out uttered, Sam scrambled back to his boxed-in sanctuary to find his gun. Well, he went to retrieve what he remembered were the constituent parts for his gun. He usually left it disassembled, as many pieces served as excellent hardware tools. Since he was terrible at field-dressing, he scooped all of the mechanisms into his tote bag before running along after them.

When her gun is snatched, she has half a mind to attack Otto but remembers that he's her leader now. All he needed to was to tell her not to shoot him and she would obey. Her eyebrow rose when the man has landed on his butt and slam his head against the wall. 'He's a weak one isn't he? He needs to be careful. Creatures would love to eliminate weak ones.' Once Otto mentions that this stranger is part of the department, a frown appears on her face before nodding, recognizing Sam as an ally. Taking her pistol back from her leader, she hears him introducing her new ally, the one called Sam Thanati. Rubbing her nose, she finally notices where the smell is coming from, that man. Hearing her order, she squats down as she starts to pick up the file that went all over the floor.
Hearing the move out, the woman places the file on the desk. Thirteen stands up and is already at ready. Her weapon safe in the holster, her coat is already on, her clothes is not too loose but enough if she has to fight. Blinking as Sam started to scramble away into a corner, her dark blue hues glances towards Otto, "He's not sanitary...can we bathe him?"

Furrowing his brow as he pulled on his suit jacket and overcoat, Otto considered all the evidence in the situation. "Agent Thanati will deal with that issue in his own time. If it bothers you too much, then start smoking. It'll dull it." He said, locking the office door for the first time in years. He lead his two charges out, past security guards and the mocking faces of the agriculture workers, finally to the grey light of day. In the open, he felt able to light up again. Then made a decision to lighten both their moods. "In the interests of making sure you get on, Sam will ride up front with me, and you can have the whole back seat Thirteen. Open the windows if you wish. I'd like to point out that I left that nasty little tool they gave me back in the office. I do not like using corporal punishment on anyone in my jurisdiction." Unlocking the silver car, he gestured for them both to enter, but pulled Sam to him, surreptitiously. "Sam, I know you've been resenting the Junior agent tag for a while now. The only reason you've stayed at that level is because we didn't have enough of us for a field team. Now we do. But this girl.... Sam, she's technically from the Ross clan. I know you sneered at the first story I told you about them. And then there was that mess when you saw the video. So keep an eye on her, keep your smart alecky comments to a minimum. When we come back from this you get promoted." Stepping back and extinguishing the cigarrette, grinding it under his heel he gestured to them both. "Both of you get promoted when we get back. Keep your guns stowed, we aren't going to deal with a physical entity. Neither of you are ready. But we've had this request sat on my desk for a year." And with that, he sat down in his drivers seat and turned the ignition, punched up his cd changer, deciding on Flood by They Might Be Giants to lighten the mood.

Sam tuned out their chatter as he was collecting the weapon components. When they went outside, he could not help but cower from the beaming sun. He had always made it a point to leave work, the few times he did, during the night. When he had to go out during the day previously, he normally used sunglasses, but they were currently dismantled for parts. In his haste to grab his weapon, he had forgotten about eye shielding. Still, after hobbling to the car, he was beginning to adjust to the bright outdoors.
Before he got into the vehicle, he was pulled aside. Otto's explanation was quick and to the point, but hearing the Ross clan mentioned stirred up irrational fears in his mind. While normally this would have unsettled him a good bit, the announcement of promotion helped him to think of other things.
He verbally agreed with Otto's seating decision and grabbed shotgun. Hearing that guns wouldn't be necessary, his simultaneously grew excited and depressed. While was not at all qualified to use a firearm and didn't care for physical violence, he couldn't help but feel a little excited. As they drove, he still felt anxious about Ross girl 13.

Frowning, Thirteen really wants to scrub away the stinky smile away from the new ally, but she cannot. Instead, the offer of smoking would help cover the smell. Confused, she doesn't know how that works. They both smell awful. Coffee, while strong and unique, is better then the smell of smoke and body odor for sure. Stepping outside, her face makes a huge grin, as she lets in a deep inhale, she wants to go play. Explore. But one thing is stopping her for the time being. Her orders. Blue hues glances towards Otto when he speaks to her about the car arrangement. Nodding, Thirteen went ahead and gets in the backseat just as Otto have mention to her. He also said something about opening the windows. She have heard of windows but only see it now and then when moving from one location to another in her previous homebase. Smiling, Thirteen really does feel free. Too distracted to hear that Otto has left that device back at the desk. All one could hope that they wouldn't find themselves in a bad situation with Thirteen.
So distracted and being overwhelmed with new things, she didn't notice that Otto has pulled Sam aside. Once they got in the car, that's when she realizes they have spent a bit of time before getting in the car. Whining softly, Thirteen rubs her nose. Good grief. She doesn't know why, but all the sudden, she has the urge to get away from Sam as much as possible. Hearing the idea of promotion, Thirteen starts to think for a bit, trying to remember her vocabulary. Raising her eyebrow at the mention not needing guns, she will still take hers with her. The car turns on, something she's used to, Thirteen decides to try that odd button on the side of the car, which has rolled down the windows. Thrilled, she went ahead and rolls down both windows. At least that helps the smell. Curious and once again, overwhelmed, Thirteen is hearing this odd sounds coming from different directions in the car. "What is this I am listening to?" Thirteen questions, her voice hinted with excitement and eager to learn.

"Has she really been so isolated she doesn't even know what music is? I mean I know They Might Be Giants would be considered unorthodox but they've had her raised in a box. Still, this is going a little better than I planned my day. Realistically it would have devolved to me dusting off that other laptop again and playing Freeciv against Sam" The thoughts of Mabuse came as a cynical coruscating pattern. His eyes and hands were devoted to the road. They were heading towards the sheltered accomodation maybe 50 miles from the office. "It's music, 13. One of those things you should look into once you're at home tonight. For now... maybe just enjoy things." He lit two cigarettes without hesitation, leaving one perched between his lips and wordlessly offered one to Sam, in their ever continuing cycle of owing and giving that had been a foundation of day to day life. "I'm going to tell you what we're going to investigate. Sam, you know I had you directing research at electrionic voice phenomena? Again, I have deceived you to further potential ends. We're going to be investigating a haunting presence. But it manifests itself to those who cannot see. In it's place, they've been reporting voices, people and things touching them. Grabbing them. Not always, but sometimes malevolently so. Hopefully it should be... odd but uncomplicated. Something we can be in and out of within the day." And with that, he was silent, smoking and mulling over other thoughts. "Yes. It's almost time. Almost time for me to tell him the truth about his father."

By now, he knew Mr. Mabuse would frequently offer a cig whether or not he ever accepted. Thus, given they were in a well-ventilated situation, he accepted. While he did not puff it, he did hold onto it. Sam listened intently as Otto recounted the details of their mission for today. He didn't mind that Otto had misled him, as Sam knew that he himself was not suited for any degree of leadership; thus, he could not fathom the decisions a leader must make. The phenomenon they would be investigating did set him up for unease, as he was superstitious enough to believe in the ghost in the machine. And if it he could imagine that was real, anything was possible...

Hearing what he says that it's called music, Thirteen makes a memory in her brain to remind her what she is listening to is called music. It's nice. She doesn't mind it. It's better then the beeping she constantly hear at the homebase. Even though she's not there, she hears it in her mind now and then. Hearing that maybe she should just enjoy things, Thirteen shrug her shoulders before scooting into the backseat and glancing out of the window, the wind on her face feels rather foreign but lovely. Hearing the words, Thirteen was trained pretty well to know about few things in the area she's in now. Thirteen starts to remember what Otto is talking about. Electronic voice phenomena. 'A device to let humans hear what they couldn't capture with their own ears, but the machine captures it for them. Usually used to see if there's spiritual entity about.' Raising her eyebrow, if the spirit only manifests itself to those that cannot see, how can they try to determine if there is a spirit there? Curious, what would they do if the place is indeed, haunted by a spirit? Last she check, it's not exactly easy to be rid of spirits. "If the entity is indeed too malevolent sir, then what do you suggest we do?

Pondering over this for a while, Mabuse drove on, for a time only pausing to take a drag from his cigarette, finally throwing it out the window when it reached it's butt. "We will carry out an on site asessment, determine it's threat level and put what steps we can in to secure Status: Normal" And with that, he was inducting them into the reason for their jobs, their workload and in Thirteens case, the reason for her existence. "The American public must not become aware of what is out there. To allow a threat to Status: Normal is to invite the potential for our own demise on a mass scale. " The car turned onto a smaller road, winding off into the foothills. Otto focused, letting the strains of We Want a Rock wash over him.

Though Sam attempted to get some sleep part of the way, he couldn't help but get nervous as they kept driving. Knowing that they were farther and farther from civilization, not that normal society could or should provide defense against what thy faced, was far from comforting. He nodded to Otto, "Y-Yeah, l-let's just try to make this one quick..."

Thirteen has to admit, she's a bit confused but she knows that she would be able to pick up quickly herself. Not being worried about it, she rests back at the backseat so that the wind could blow into her face, trying to eliminate the horrid smells coming from one of the males and that stick. Rubbing her nose again, it actually burns a bit. She has the urge to cough but decides to surpass that urge. When Sam spoke up, his words and voice are both nervous, having her to raise her eyebrow and glances towards him. 'Interesting. I do wonder what he is good for.' Saying nothing, she glares at him for a bit and then look back at outside. For some reason, she wants to open the door and get out of the car to run between the trees. She has seen images and touched a few, but she has never seen this mass amount of trees before.

After another half hour of travel, with barely anyone speaking the car eventually pulled up at the residential home, a slightly rundown looking 70s era building with a lot of braile signage and tactile paving tiles outside. Otto sighed and got out, leaving his raincoat due to the short distance to the door. He strode towards it, wondering about the most pragmatic use of his team, remembering the old jokes about "Inhuman resources" before pushing the doorbell to be greeted by a gruff, dishevelled looking care assistant.

They were all pretty quiet for the rest of the car ride, none of them particularly pleased with this road trip. By now, Sam knew his personal appearance, while not usually pleasing, was not threatening in the slightest. Thus, he had no qualms about getting out of the car right away as well, though he stayed closer to the car while Otto took care of business. He didn't want to strike up conversation on his own, though he in general didn't want to do that anyway, but he wouldn't be cold or curt if engaged by a client (or victim, as the 1 terms were synonymous in their line of work).

Boring! She doesn't like this. They both remained quiet the whole way. She wants to learn more and yet they don't seem willing to participate in conversations. If anything, they seem to have a lot on their mind. How troublesome. Keeping her mouth shut, she tires to ease the questions that are not important and move the ones on top of her list so she can ask them when she has the chance. She doubts if she will. Arrving, Thirteen was more than happy to step out of the car and away from the smells. Geez. They both are going to kill her. Rubbing her nose, she notices that Otto went ahead and went inside while Sam stayed by the car. Raising her eyebrow, a mischievous smirk appears on her face. She wants to see if he's ready for anything. She wants to test him. As if she's a solider wanting to test another. Or maybe as a prey wanting to play with it's toy? Thirteen jumps onto the roof of the car as she lets out an unearthly growl towards Sam.
