The teen rocked as he was punched, lifting a hand to rub his shoulder while he glowered at his companion. He felt a smidge bad that he'd put his foot in his mouth, but mostly he still just felt annoyed. Puffing at his cigarette, Matthew watched Dana tug at the boards with a petulant expression until she got one free and he sighed in annoyance.
"Well, good, because I wouldn't want to kiss you anyway." He snapped back as he came forward to grab at the boards. He knew he sounded childish, but he honestly didn't give a ********. If she would play the child, he could too. "Here, I'll do it. You're going to hurt yourself."
Putting his back into it, Matthew pulled hard and one board after another came free with a squeal of nails in wood. He dropped them at his feet, and once the hole was big enough for a person to pass through, he ducked down to squeeze through it without waiting for her to go first.
Once inside, the teen pulled out his phone to turn on its flashlight app, sweeping the area around them. Some of the anger faded as curiosity replaced it, his green eyes narrowing at the dust and grime.

"Y-you wish," Dana stammered, nostrils flaring and cheeks puffing out as her face shaded a new, redder complexion.
She nudged past him when he moved to let her go first, and she scampered through with nimble agility. Dana was used to squirreling through small spaces and places she wasn't supposed to be, but this time she was motivated by embarrassment. She hoped in futility he hadn't gotten a glimpse of the fact she was nearly tomato red at this point.
She dug around in her backpack until she produced a maglite she'd brought along specifically for this. She sniffed and turned up her nose, smug about being prepared until she realized the bright light made her face visible and she let out a panicked, "Wah!" And shut it off.
"T-there," She cleared her throat, "There should be a ladder somewhere to get to the upper floors. Unless you're too scaaaaaaared."

The little panicked noise drew attention, but by that point she had already turned off the light and there was little to see in the dimness. Matthew lifted her phone-light higher, frowning lightly.
"Like this place is scary... It's just an empty old building, Dana. Like, there is legit nothing scary here." He said as he swept the light around the room to show her. Granted, had he been alone, the stillness and disarray might have given him the creeps. With Dana here though, it was a lot easier to dismiss the weird sensations as mind tricks.
Taking the lead, the teen followed the wall around and swept his phone back and forth as he went. Dust, dirt, abandoned things, forgotten memories... When he wasn't thinking about serial killers in clown masks waiting around the corner, he actually felt a strange liking for this dystopian place. No one wanted it... It had been abandoned and left to slowly decline. It was appealing, in its own way. Add to that the idea that before too long it would probably be torn down, and the limited remaining time to enjoy this old place only added to its tragedy.
Turning around to look for Dana, Matthew kept his phone pointed towards the wall.
"That the right ladder?" He asked, squinting into the darkness.

"Right," Dana muttered, and kept her arms stiff behind her back. After a few moments to quell her embarrassment, she flicked on her flashlight and started glancing around other areas to the side, trailing behind Matthew by a few steps.
She paused, realizing she was starting to amble away from him as she spotted this or that and the random things she deemed worth investigating with a closer look, which was everything. Any random piece of debris could be interesting. Dana could be enamored just by visually tracing the way rotted wood split.
She stopped when he spoke, and realized she'd ambled away from him. She turned her flashlight over the landscape until the flashlight beam landed on his back, and lingered there as she stared. "Iunno, prolly. All ladders go up, dude."
And then she flushed red and flailed backwards in another sudden wave of awkwardness. Sudden and possibly unwarranted paranoia slipped in as she mentally convinced herself that she had just stopped to admire his Halloween hair from the back but he might think she was staring at his butt or something and that would be the worst and why did you do that, Dana?!
In her panic, she slipped, and accidentally sent things crashing and the floor beneath her sneakers gave way and she dropped ********!" Was sounded off once the clattering had stopped and Dana found herself hanging on the edge of a hole in the floor, dangling over the basement.

Grabbing hold of the ladder, Matthew gave it a hard pull to test it. When he was sure it wasn't coming down, he grabbed above his head and pulled himself up, putting his weight on it to be completely sure it was safe for them to go climbing it.
"No s**t, ladders go up." He snorted in reply, letting go to drop back to the floor with the thump of boots on wood. What a little smart a** that girl was... but he could kinda dig it. The sass was appealing, when she wasn't being a stupid teenage girl. The surroundings lit up as the light hit his back and lingered. It gave him a good view of the ladder all the way up and he made to start climbing it when the light suddenly went swinging around wildly and Matthew heard Dana flailing around behind him.
Glancing back was a horrible idea, because a stray swing blinded him and he cursed as he threw an arm up. Something crashed and Dana shouted, sending a surge of adrenaline through the teen.
"Dana?" He called as he blinked rapidly, trying to get his night vision back. Turning his phone light around, he started sweeping the room for her, concerned when she seemed to have up and disappeared. Scrambling forward, the hole in the floor was easy to spot and after some searching, so was the hands clinging to the edge.
"s**t, Dana!" Matthew shouted as he pounded across the floor, dropping to his knees with a thump as he reached for her wrists. All he could think about was getting her up out of the hole, panicked she was going to fall and get herself hurt. Getting her up, however, was not going to be an easy feat...
"Hold on, I've got you! ******** hell..." Getting his feet up under him, Matthew hauled upwards, trying not to impale her on the ragged edges of the boards. He might have had a few pounds on Dana, but ******** if she wasn't heavy.
