This was it. Harland twisted his gauntlet, which ground the hookshot inside its organs, cutting and slicing and rendering it so weak that Harland could stand over it, holding it down with one of his now very gory canvas shoes. He was breathing heavily, and he felt incredibly sore.

He couldn't wait to shower in the heat and to sleep next to Alistaire again, and just generally all the things he had previously taken for granted as not only a hunter of Deus but as an adult.

He was glad to no longer be a high-school student. Twice over.

He captured the student, and prepared to take it back to Deus.

Alistaire read the newest note from Harland with a slight frown on his face, idly running gloved fingers over the side of his jaw. He was sitting at his desk in his room, and thankfully it was empty, all the students having already left. This whole mission was one big undercover mess up, and all he wanted to do was go back to Deus.

The student in question that he'd been keeping an eye on had started to talk to him, which was a relatively good thing, Alistaire decided. He wasn't even sure of the kid's name (and he didn't really care), but he debated heavily throughout the day whether the student in question was actually intelligent enough to become a hunter.

"I don't know what I saw," she'd said dramatically, her heavily ringed eyes wide and slightly glazed. She was wearing a pleated plaid skirt with a black turtleneck sweater and looked as though she'd stepped out of a 1980's high school. "But, you know, it was like, really scary and I just...you know?"

No, he really didn't know, nor did he care to, but he made noncommittal sounds of understanding and nodded his head a few times like he actually was listening. Another teacher, another hunter, might have taken the girl's hand consolingly, but Alistaire found no such inclination to do so.

"Well, Miss, ah..."

// Williams. //

"Miss Williams, have you heard of the hunter initiative?"

She looked blankly at him and he sighed and explained, although in very flat, careful terms. Afterwards, she gave a laugh and shook her head, her short red hair bobbing from side to side. It reminded him of a little girl somehow.

"Oh, I could like, never do something like that," she said with a laugh. "What would my boyfriend do without me? We're like totally inseparable. Besides, that just sounds like it'd be no fun at all, and I'm really okay with just being here okay."

Alistaire forced a smile. "Right," he said, and eased himself out of his desk chair as she flounced from the room, already reaching for his cell phone. He'd need to call in someone to fix her memories, but regardless of that, he was absolutely done here. It was time to find Harland and get the hell back to Deus.

Quote:
Wild Card 3. The student shows up at school, and with some encouragements, begins to talk about the things they see that other people don't. You have the option to either recruit them then and there, or leave if for another hunter to do later. If they refuse the offer, you need to call in to have the memory of this day erased. A security watch will placed on the family, and their records will be sifted through for bloodline information, but your job there is done.

Dawn of the Third Day

Harland had not slept at all, but he had showered. With the vampire creature still unconscious, he hadn't wanted to risk it waking while he slept, not that sleep had come easily since he had started this mission in the first place. Clean, bruised, and with dark circles under his eyes, the second dawn's first light broke, Harland was on his way to the school again.

He had wrapped the body up in sheets, and knotted them together so he could carry it around him in a sling. Not for the first time, he was grateful he was a pretty muscular individual now.

On his way into the school, he knew he would likely be able to make it to Alistaire's class fairly undetected and even if someone saw him he just had to find Alistaire and shake them. Mary was the one who found him, the only one, as his hand was poised over the handle of Alistaire's classroom. He was going to wait inside, his mind a little foggy, but instead he turned to face her, smiling thinly.

"Good mornin', Mary," he said.
"You're not really a student, are you," she accused, looking entirely upset at him.
"I am, in a manner of speakin', if I was Roiben Frost-- I will not be, the second I speak with Dmitri," he said, referring to the teacher by his name. Harland smiled.
"That's the body, right?" Mary asked, her eyes narrowing.
"What body?" Harland asked, shrugging a shoulder.
"The one of the thing that tried to kill you," she said.
"That body," he said, shrugging again, refusing to commit to an answer.

Harland sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. "If the day should come that you're offered a place fightin' the evil that lives mixed in with us normal folk, take the chance," he said, quietly. "For now, sorry I'll never call, Mary. I'm afraid even if I wasn't far too old for ye, I'm already in love with someone," he said, with an awkward smile, his face red. Harland nodded his head back at Alistaire's classroom.
"You're in love with Mr. Dmitri?!" Mary asked, incredibly distraught, and also a little repulsed. She hit his chest with one flat palm, angry.
"Shhh," Harland said, putting one finger to his own lips, "One of two secrets I'll need ye to keep for the time bein'," he said. "No one can know what ye've seen, or it won't be safe for me an' neither for ye; an keep what I've told ye to yourself," he said, smiling at her again.
Mary didn't look convinced, but she sighed heavily. "Only because you didn't do anything pervy," she said. Even though she may have wanted him to, at some point.

Harland reached out and ruffled her hair, like he'd done with Oliver. "That's my girl," he said, grinning even more widely.

With that, he let himself into Alistaire's classroom, and sat on the desk, waiting for Alistaire to arrive so they could manage an extraction via portal and go home with the unconscious Halloween creature.

Mr. Parikett was back.

"Look, Mr. Dmitri, I don't know what you're playing at," he said, somewhat breathlessly, in a voice that was slightly too nasal and more than a little annoying for so early in the morning. Alistaire gave a resigned sigh and slowed his steps, a look of irritation flashing across his face as he turned to look at the principal.

"Playing at, sir?"

Mr. Parikett gave a little wheeze and wiped at his forehead. "This whole...everything's been messed up since you came in," he said, an accusatory tone in his voice. "You've severely compromised the integrity of this school, and I am doubtful of your actual license as a teacher."

"I can assure you," said Alistaire dryly, casting a bored glance around at the crowded walls, the peeling paint, the out of order sign on the elevator. "that I have not compromised the integrity of anything, Mr. Parikett. I sincerely regret that you seem to be laboring under some severe misconceptions about what I do, but regardless of the matter, I have things to attend to."

The principal looked less than thrilled at this reply. "That's it?" he said, huffing. "No more explanations? You just sweep in here and things get messed up and then you're on your merry way?"

"My dear sir," said Alistaire, casting a glance at the closed door of his classroom, where he hoped Harland was waiting. "I am merely a substitute teacher. Anything that's happened in the past several days has been a coincidence. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a meeting to attend to, good day sir."

And he left Mr. Parikett sputtering and wheezing and let himself back into "his" classroom (though he supposed it wasn't really his anymore), locking the door behind him.

"This is," he said, walking towards where Harland was sitting on top of his desk and slamming the file folders down beside him, looking immensely relieved. "the most absurd mission I have ever been on. Are you quite ready to leave, Mr. Frost?" Alistaire added, stepping in front of Harland, nudging himself between his knees. They were in a locked, darkened classroom, in a completely unfamiliar place, so he felt no qualms about wrapping a gloved hand around the back of Harland's neck and drawing him down for a brief but firm kiss. After all, it had been several days and he was tired of being here, tired of not sleeping well. Alistaire let out another sigh, burrowing his face into Harland's neck.

"I'd sincerely like to go home now."

Naturally, Harland had asked Mary to keep his secret but he was hardly going to leave this to chance; he'd call in a memory alteration just like Alistaire'd have to for the Hunter candidate, though Harland hadn't heard this yet. They'd have to compare notes, later.

The second Alistaire walked in, Harland's tired face lit up. He didn't expect, at all, Alistaire nudging between his knees to kiss him. Harland, a sound of surprise and then enjoyment in his throat, reached his arms out to wrap them around Alistaire, kissing Alistaire's head. "I s'pose teacher student relations are back on the table, Mr.Dmitri?" he asked, smiling.

He was going to sleep very, very well once they were home.

"I think this is the part where I admit that so long's ye're with me I'm home enough," Harland said, sliding one of his hands up to Alistaire's neck and stroking the back of it with one thumb. "An' yes, I'd like t' sleep in our bed again," Harland added, "Think I found what was tormentin' the students."

He gestured to the body on the desk, wrapped in sheets and tied up. "Hey," he said, smiling again, leaning back and cupping Alistaire's face with one hand, "Congratulations, we'll no longer be trainees."

Harland was, in fact, all too eager to go home. He wanted more kisses, first and foremost, and also a good night of sleep and maybe, okay, other things too because the fear of death was a pretty strong incentive.
