"No," he replied. "Just bruises." Chris beat him, but he didn't beat him; Jack supposed that was some luck. "More on the right than the left." He scrunched his face and lifted his arm up as much as it'd let him, leaning forward and easing his weight on the other arm.

"So this's ironic, huh? Supposed t'be dead, but here you are making sure I'm just fine." He glanced at Gale. "Think that'll be something fun t'tell your girlfriend."

Gale stood, leaning over Jack so that he could wrap the bandages around his torso once, and then twice, and it was a little sad that he didn't have to bend over to reach Jack because he was so damn tall that even standing Gale was just up to his shoulder. He secured the bandages with the little clip, frowning slightly as he worked, then eyed a few of the smaller cuts, none of which would need stitches, but would, at least, need cleaning.

"Maybe it's because you look like a kicked dog," He said. Gale most definitely did not want to discuss Stormy, and he dabbed at Jack's cuts with as professionally as he could, and trying very hard to suppress the desire to jab at him instead. "Why are you still alive, anyway?" He asked flatly. "I heard about what happened on the mission; you shouldn't have survived that."

Kicked dog? Bah. Chel was the kicked dog as far as he was concerned.

Jack, Owain admonished him quietly.

With a smile of superiority that masked the minute reactions of pain to each touch, Jack touched his index finger to his lips and shushed Gale gently. "Spoilers, Gentry. But credit where credit's due: I wouldn't have had half as much fun doing it," burning, blinded, dehydrated, hallucinating, "if your girlfriend hadn't been such a coward that she didn't just kill me herself. Leaving me to die is so risky, so James Bond villain." He scoffed. "I don't die that easily."

I would not be so eager to rouse the temper of your healer, dear one.

But Jack didn't mind. the more he talked about it, the more resentful about it he found himself, and the more he acted like it was a joke.

"Next time, she ought to stay behind and finish the job herself. That's the only way to do it right."

"Leaving someone to die isn't cowardice if there's a purpose behind it," said Gale, scowling, in spite of his feelings behind it, his mind working frantically to try and remind himself to not take the bait not take the bait not take the bait. Jack, after all, thrived on antagonism and arrogance, and it wouldn't do either of them - or Stormy - any of them any good. "Also nice try, you're not that indestructible, no one here is."

He tossed another few pieces of crumpled gauze and wipes into the trash. "You know, you do that a lot," said Gale, brow furrowed in concentration as he wiped one of the slightly larger cuts. "You call her my girlfriend instead of by her name. It's like you're either trying to mock me - which is expected from you - or you just don't want to call her by the name she goes by here."

Gale reached for some of the gauze and then the tape, pressing a few squares to Jack's torso and sticking the tape between his teeth to hold it for a moment while he made sure it was in place.

"You bring this sort of crap on yourself."

"Yes, I call Lina your girlfriend because I'm mocking you and not at all because it's a fact," he said rather mockingly. "Stormy is a ridiculous name anyway. This isn't The Justice League, and that isn't what I know her by."

The rest of what he meant to say was cut off by a strangled noise as Gale continued his work. The bandages were soothing, but the pressure set his nerves on fire.

"Fuuuuuuck. I'm curious, though: are you gonna tell her you saw me?" Jack asked. "Or are you gonna let her find out on her own? 'Cause I'd really like to have a word with her about that."

He rolled his eyes, pushing particularly hard on one gauze patch to keep it in place on Jack's ribs as Gale snipped off a piece of tape and stuck it on one side. "What, like Jack is any better as a given name? I'm sure there are loads of jokes to be made with that."

<< Baiting. >> whispered Jinhai, and Gale shut his mouth for a few seconds, finishing with the patch before he could say anything else that could be used as mocking fodder by the giant.

"Of course I'll tell her," Gale said, reaching for another piece of gauze. He was trying very hard not to let it show that the prospect of letting Jack and Stormy meet again, especially after what Stormy had said about his "death," was just about the last thing that Gale wanted. And especially not after Stormy had just left Jack there to die. "I don't keep secrets from her, as much as you'd love to think that I do."

The second patch down and there was one more left, Gale reaching for the third and final piece of gauze.

"You know, you wouldn't be half as bad if you just stopped it with the whole I am better than you attitude," he said flatly. "Around here, you're not actually worth as much as you think you are."

He scoffed. "Are you really going to talk s**t about names when yours is Gail?" (He knew the different spelling by now but didn't care.)

Unable to suppress his shivering now, Jack waited until Gale applied the third patch of gauze before lowering his arm and rubbing sensation back into it. "I wouldn't dream of you keep anything from her," he oozed. "I know she's got you whipped." He still remembered the fight on Christmas Eve when she had literally sent the midget back home so that adults could talk.

"You're wrong, of course. You're worth as much as you make yourself out to be." Jack let his eyes fall closed, still faintly smirking even though it was only for show. "I thought someone who became a hunter at only sixteen years old might have understood that by now. Or are you comfortable with your mediocrity under Caelius?"

Gale, with a great deal of self-control, refrained from saying further about names because if he did, he would say something sarcastic back, and that would result in more disdainful, snide commentary from Jack, and then it would be a whole big, useless, pathetic cycle of accomplishing absolutely nothing. He was reminded forcefully of that saying about how if one wrestled with a pig, all they got was an angry pig and lots of mud.

"Yes, yes," said Gale boredly, rubbing alcohol on the cut first and hoping it stung before he pushed the gauze on. "Forgive me for deciding to listen to my girlfriend, I realize that it's a terrible thing and that I should stop doing it, but, you know, I kind of like her and all, but by all means, if it means it'll make you feel better."

The last part was said with a relatively large amount of sarcasm, Gale leaning back to survey his handiwork. "Fifteen, actually; and being under Caelius for the past three and a half years means I'm used to the derogatory comments about how useful and worthwhile I am," he said, although he flinched slightly at the mediocrity comment, Gale trying hard not to let that slight show. His eyes strayed to the bruise on Jack's jaw, which had started to grow darker. "Do you have ice around? You should put some on your face, otherwise it'll swell."

And make you look even stupider than you do now, he thought, but didn't say it out loud, Gale reaching for the leftover medical supplies. "So what now, Jack?" he said abruptly, packing away the bandages. "I'm not going to stop dating Stormy, but I assume you're not going to stop interfering, which, since you're back alive again, makes things more complicated."

Once the job was finished, he was up and moving as Gale spoke (above his every word), trying to control the little spasms that wanted to happen as the alcohol continued to sting; all movement was still protested. Jack could feel his heartbeat in his head as he leaned down, opened the mini fridge, and grabbed a cold beer can that he then gently put to his cheek with a soft grunt.

If anything Gale said had interested him, it wasn't showing.

"Interfering, s'that what it was?" Jack asked, snickering without any humor. "Keep her, Gentry. I'm done with that b***h. In fact, you go ahead and send her a message for me when you go running back to her lap like a good dog: tell her she won't have to worry about me ******** with her anymore." His feigned smile turned frosty. "But if we do happen to cross paths, I'll keep what she did to me in mind."

"Interfering, because you can't ever seem to let things go," said Gale with a scowl. He shut the medical kit shut with a small snap. "Because you seem to think of things - and people - like they're your property. Like she owes you something, when I'm pretty sure she doesn't owe you - pardon the pun - jack s**t."

Gale leaned back with a sigh, pressing his lips together. "I'm tired of fighting with you. It's like trying to tame a rabid dog, and I don't think there's really anything at all that I can say that will get you to back off, is there? Look, just..." He gave a sigh, reigning in the impulse to pick up the medical kit and throw it very hard at Jack's head.

"You're not gonna have much to live for if you keep this bloody mess up."

His smile evaporated but the chill of it didn't. He gazed at Gale like he wanted nothing more than to smash something over the midget's head.

"She used to owe me two years. Two ******** years where I thought she was dead, that she'd committed suicide after promising me she wouldn't, letting me think it was my fault she couldn't be happy enough to stay alive."

His eyes narrowed. "How would you feel, Gentry, with that bleeding heart of yours, if you'd spent that long blaming yourself for her death, 'cause even with a ******** up life you still loved her? If you had to deal with not just your own s**t but the s**t she left behind: her family and her friends? Huh? How would you <********' feel," his voice grew harsher, his fists balled, "if after all that, you get here and find out that not only s'she alive, but she's with someone else and ignores you every god damn way she can? Tells you to move on when you can't? Doesn't even wanna be friends or anything, just <******** the past and ******** you, erasin' s**t like it doesn't matter anymore? Decides leaving your a** is more important than saving it?"

He didn't know why he was ranting at Gale. Maybe the pain loosened his lips like alcohol ******** you," he hissed. "Now she owes me two years and a life. <******** you and the little pony you rode on, Gentry, because how I live with that is my business."

His own expression had turned icy. It felt as though the temperature in the room had dropped several degrees.

"Has it ever really occurred to you, Jack," said Gale, in a tone that dripped with so much sarcasm it was almost visible. "that I have been through a similar situation? Oh, but wait, that would never occur to you, because everything is always about you. Everything is only you, because clearly only you could go through something like that, the world owes you because poor Jack Hawthorn thinks it does. That's not only selfish, it's pathetic."

He let out a barking laugh that was entirely humorless and bordered on derisive. "Has it ever occurred to you that, maybe, just maybe, there was a reason behind leaving your sorry a** behind? Maybe you're just blinded by this perfect, faultless image you have of yourself, but believe me, you are the farthest thing from perfect, and not only that, but you've screwed things up even worse than I have."

The medical kit was picked up, Gale wrapping his fingers around the cold plastic just to have something to hold onto, something to do with his hands in order to prevent himself from leaping forward and strangling Jack a second time.

"I decided I would try and help you today to try and see if I could understand you a little more. I thought maybe I would be able to see things from your point of view, that maybe I might be able to get past all of the arrogance and the selfishness and the pathetic woe is me act, but apparently that's never going to happen."

He was now gripping the kit so tightly his knuckles were white. Gale let out his breath in one long, shaking breath, his face even paler than usual as he steadied himself and looked across the room at Jack.

"I'm not going to fight you anymore," he said, sounding weary. "I'm tired of fighting you. And I'm sorry about..." Gale waved a hand, but there wasn't really anything to gesture at, so he let his arm fall back to his side. "Whatever. You don't even care, so I don't know why I bother."

Some part of him knew that it was a giant insult to his person, but Jack was numb to the sting. All he heard in the words, I'm not going to fight you anymore was I am weak. And I'm sorry became I'm not sorry at all.

He was injured and could easily be combated with a single punch or kick, but that didn't stop Jack from advancing on Gale with a dangerous look in his eyes. "Yeah...You know what? You're right. I don't care," he snapped, a maelstrom of emotions stirring in his chest in spite of his words. Deja vu struck him: wasn't this exactly what Peyton had tried on him so many months ago in the infirmary? And here he was doing the exact same thing, minus the choking--and he wasn't too sure that wouldn't become a possibility in the very near future. "I never ******** care. Why would I? Who the ******** would give a s**t, right? So get out if you're so tired."

For the first time, he didn't feel intimidated by Jack as he stepped towards him. Maybe it was because of that weariness, or maybe it was because of the fact that Jack looked truly awful and slightly demented, especially with the bruises standing starkly out against his skin along his jawline.

Gale didn't flinch. He stared resolutely up (and up) at Jack with his expression set and without backing down.

"If you didn't care," he said evenly. "You wouldn't have gone off about Stormy leaving you behind and all that. But hey, maybe you just really do think that highly of yourself, so more power to you. So fine, Jack, I'll leave you alone, but you should at least get your own head together enough to figure out what kind of person you really are."

He tossed the medical kit onto the bed and took a few steps back, shaking his head.

"I'm done with you, Jack. And I'm pretty sure you're done with yourself too."

And then he turned and slipped from the room before Jack could see his legs give away and the confident facade crumble at his feet as Gale staggered down the hall toward the stairs.
