 Following a little way behind Destati, Niall ended up stopping in his tracks a few yards behind her. The filly his daughter was talking to - and with quite a lot of animation, too - she had wings. She. Had. Wings. Not only were they wings, but they were feathered wings, beautiful, creamy feathered wings. When was the last time he had seen feathered wings on a soquili? It must have been a long time ago, when he was on the plains, because he couldn't remember having seen them on anyone except perhaps Maui since he had been on the beach with Destati's family, and they had moved further down, so he saw them perhaps once in a blue moon. And so he caught himself staring until his eyes began to dry; after that, he blinked rapidly and tried to tear his eyes away and find his way back to the conversation that his mate was having with the newcomer, who had introduced herself as Kalypso.
"Yes, please think about staying!" he added. How long had it been since Destati had had a mare to talk to? Her only company was he and their daughter, and he had to admit, he and Del got along fine by themselves. Destati required more to battle the loneliness. She had grown up in a big family, after all. "We would love to show you around, if you would like."

 Keeping one eye on Sephora and Delmaria as the kelpi filly's mother spoke, Kalypso took a tiny step back, dismayed. She had not planned on staying anywhere other than where they stopped for the night - she had never been anything more than a traveler passing through an area before, and for good reason. With the way her problems weighed her down, it was hard to make friends. Sure, she had made one or two before, but then the sea would begin calling her again, telling her to move on before a kelpi found out where she was staying, and found her friends, too. And staying here - that would put her right under the nose of a kelpi, even if she was a young one. And yet... "A wish?" she asked, wondering what that could mean. How did one wish for a child and receive one? If that was so, why had it taken her so long to be blessed with a child of her own, and only then by having a stallion to father it? Could she have another child by wishing? That would be something. Perhaps if I stay, her thoughts whispered, circling about in her mind, they will tell me more? She could not go through losing a child again - at first, it had seemed a good idea to chase off Alonzo and make sure he had that basket in tow, but now... Now she would never know his child. She would never know if she had grandchildren. "I wouldn't mind staying for a little bit," she said, trying to ignore the alarm building in her at the thought of a kelpi playing with her daughter. A wish, she thought desperately. She was born of a wish, how could she be evil? "Sephora, would you like to stay for a while? You and Delmaria could be friends." Please don't think I am a hypocrite, my lovely.

 Delmaria looked up at her parents' and Sephora's mother's conversation, listening with an attentive ear for a moment. A playmate! That would be so awesome, so much fun! They could hang out together all day, and Daddy could hang out with them, too... He was as close to a playmate as she had ever had, after all. Mommy was more... motherly... Always telling her to be careful and cleaning her up after she had done something stupid, like swum through a bunch of seaweed. Daddy was more fun, sort of. In his own Daddy way. "Oh, please say yes!" Del said, jumping up and down, her wings fluttering wildly with enthusiasm. "We could be best friends! It would be sooooooooooooooooo much fun! I could show you where you can find the prettiest shells and where I keep my collection and stuff..." Trailing off, she thought that over for another second. "As long as you promise not to steal anything," she warned. "That wouldn't be very nice."

 Looking back and forth between her mother and Delmaria's parents, Sephora's brow creased in confusion. Stay? But they didn't usually stay anywhere - like ever. But that was okay, right? And hey! It meant that Mommy was, for whatever reason, not really paying attention to the fact that Delmaria had a kelpi tail. That was a good thing, right? Maybe they really could be friends! "I would love to stay!" she exclaimed, her own wings fluttering as a smile brightened her face once more. "Can we really be friends?" she asked Delmaria, and then added, "I promise I won't steal anything."

 Her smile widening, Destati nodded. "It's settled, then! Welcome to our beach." Turning slightly to the side, her eyes met Niall's, and she jolted back for a moment - he hadn't introduced himself, and she hadn't introduced him, either. "This is my lifemate, Niall," she said, then started down the beach. "Have you walked the beaches a lot? Ours is pretty much like any other beach, but it's had a few adjustments made to accommodate our family."

Blinking, Niall nodded, and bowed a little. Oops, he thought, chagrined. It was his own job to introduce himself, and he had failed - he'd been too distracted. At least I managed to get some words out. He knew himself well enough to know that the sight of wings would render him practically speechless in the right situation (or almost any situation), and this had been no exception. Following along a little way behind Destati, Niall nodded along with her.
"There's a little shelter we put up against the rocks, just to keep us out of the coastal storms." he added.

Slightly off-put by Niall's formal half-bow, Kalypso returned it with one of her own, following behind Destati and Niall and casting a glance back at the fillies every few steps. "A shelter? That's quite smart of you. We usually just keep to the trees at night, but it's hard when it's just the beach on one side and a cliff on the other," she said, letting the small talk distract her from the alarm that had settled into her limbs from being around a kelpi. "Might I see it?"

Grinning, Del's wings slowed to a more controlled fluttering. A friend! She had never had a friend who had stuck around before - this was going to be awesome! "Of course we can be friends!" Del said, giving Sephora a light touch with her wingtip. Her coat was soft and warm, but it had the same saltiness to it that Del's parents' coats had - the texture of a beach-dweller. "And since you've promised not to steal anything, I'll show you where my stuff is first!" Running ahead of their parents, Del spun as she got a little further ahead. "Come on!" she called. "It's not too far!"
