lizbot I should have expected that from a million movies I've seen but damn if I didn't.
He broke down, eyes well up as he pressed his face to hers and broken down, every part of his snapping in half as he held her and wanting to bring her out of the shelf to just hold him in his arms again.
Instead, he wrapped his bleeding around under her and pressed his brow to hers, reaching up to throw his glasses on the ground and just press his face to hers.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I'll find you. I'll find you….please don't go. Please just hand in there….plleeaasssee…" He rocked slightly as he held her, wishing she would call again. Wishing that wouldn't be the last time he would hear her.
Wishing that this time around, he wouldn't fail her like he had failed her before and so many times before that.
When he finally managed to swallow down the tight feeling in his throat and the sobs, he asked, not bothering to look at the strange woman on the table.
"Do you know………where a door is?"
That's all that mattered now. To find the door, open it, and bring Rin home to him.

A small, sickly smile, "Which one?" Below him, Rin blinked and the lights went out. When Melvin awoke it would be on the floor of the morgue, face sticky and wet where it rested in the pool of his blood. Above him, Dr. Stephen sighed, and then everything went dark again. The next he awoke it was in the infirmary, where Melvin would be spending the next two days recovering from his suicide attempt.

For a split second, he saw Rin's eyes open. In a split second, she was alive and whole again in his arms. In a spit second, there held the endless possibility that things could return to how they had been.
In a spit second, that was taken again.
The lights went out and the world was cold.
What he felt first was how stiff his own body was. He wasn't standing anymore and he felt something hard against him. Ground. From the feeling of his cheek against it, it was tile – and something else.
Groggy, he peeled his eyes open and noticed he wasn't wearing his glasses. Through the fuzzy world around him, he could make out the morgue had been in, and he wondered if he had passed out from the blood. He tried to get up, in a panic to get back to the shelf that Rin had been in and to welcome her home, but as he tried to jerk his body up, he felt it wasn't moving.
He noticed his hand beside him, the blood all around in a thick pool, and he could barely breath. He noticed, in his horizontal angle, that there were a pair of polished shoes and well-kept pants beside him, and he followed them up to a familiar face.
This close, he could tell from Dr. Stephan's expression that he was not happy in the least. '..se..help …her.." He managed, glancing up at the general direction Rin's drawer had been.
And before he could say anything more, he felt his mind throw fuzzier than his vision and he slipped away again.
When he woke up, he was laying in the crisp sheets of an Infirmary bed. Till worn and tired, he noticed the monitor by his bedside and the IV to his right. His arm was banaged, and that alone made him feel that it had all been real. He looked around frantically to see if Rin was nearby but when he didn't see her, he pushed the call button for a nurse.
When she came, she looked upset she was bothering him. "Is Rin Adler okay? They found her in the morgue, right? Is she stable?" He asked, frantic to know of her condition.
The nurse seemed confused but Melvin had worked many shifts in the Infirmary and they knew Rin as another Lifer. They knew she was gone. They knew Melvin had spent time in the morgue before she was burned.
"I…think you might need a cousnler. She's gone." She told him, moving just to do her duty of checking on his vitals in case he actually called for a reason. When she saw nothing, he sighed and headed back out again.
"Wait! She..She was in the morgue. In the shelf. She –"
"They only found you in the morgue. You….should talk to someone." She said, clearly not comfortable on how to handle or talk to a suicidal hunter. She looked around before moving back to the door. "Get some rest."
And she left, leaving Melvin to stare at the door for many long minutes before looking down at his lap.
Open the door.
"Open the door."
Open the door.
Her voice on the phone.
Her eyes blinking open.
Blood.
"Open the door."
He leaned back and looked at the ceiling, mouthing the words, and he swore he could still smell the faint smell of her.
