yay! he's a cute. o w o

They stood, silver-skinned now, in the middle of the moonlit stream -- and Ouen was grinning like an idiot.

“I like the sound of that. Fought a fully-armored Oban. That sounds impressive. You know, you should tell stories about me, and how I saved you. Proper heroes all have stories like that, about feats they did when they were young. You know, like Nairin in the cave, and stuff like that.” Nairin was a bit of a cultural hero of Ast, though, so there was a chance that Ta’ruk would not have heard of his legends. Nontheless, the message was clear. Ouen fully intended to be a big famous hero, and this seemed like a rather good start to that quest.

In fact, so determined was he to look like a proper hero that he bit down on his tongue to stop himself from making any undignified sounds as Ta’ruk rubbed at his wounds. They stung sharply now, dried blood cracking open and the cuts exposed to cool, mineral-rich jungle water.

“I have my kni -- knife.” He even managed, when the other shifter asked him for something to scrape with. He pulled the bone-handled knife out of his waistband, the same one he had used to cut vines to cover the Oban’s corpse. Ta’ruk seemed to be done with the cleaning, so Ouen turned around to face him, studying his now-darker eyes and fair skin. He might have looked pretty, if he didn’t have that constant look of concern creasing his face.

“Have you any wounds? I should look at yours. Then we can get the bark, and then I am just about ready to get to sleep. Although a bit of a snack couldn’t hurt…” He glanced up at the canopy, looking for the tell-tale shapes of hanging fruit -- and a good perch to sleep on.

Thanks XD I really look forward to trying to find him a good man or woman for a love interest *not sure if he is gay or not*

“You are just utterly insane.” Ta’ruk managed a smile and while his comment was less than admiring his tone belied it. Ouen was definitely insane but he was at least constant in his madness. Ta’ruk flexed his narrow frame for a moment feeling for all the cuts he knew he had. His wrists hurt as well from the bindings. He had a good number of small pains along his back and sides. “I would appreciate the assistance.” He started to attend to those wounds he could reach. Most of them were shallow but they still hurt horribly. He winced and drew a sharp breath washing some of them out. Unlike Ouen he didn’t even try to hide his discomfort. He only tried to stay still to give Ouen enough time to assist him. He looked around at the different trees along with Ouen. The climb to find a good spot to rest was going to be less than pleasant. The water on his wrists was soothing and nice.

His stomach rumbled slightly. Shivering he moved to the edge of the water when Ouen was done. Ta’ruk was exhausted and yawned. All he wanted was warmth and sleep. Even food could wait until later. He took the knife from Oeun. “Hey I’ll be back in a moment.” Heading to the exposed roots on what in his head he was calling dead man’s hill he began scrapping that closest one. The shivering of his frame was still there as evidence to his cold but he never complained.

aww. x3 ouen has just gotten old enough to flirt with pretty much everyone. he doesn't discriminate. 83 and... he also doesn't always respect peoples' personal space.

“And you are not insane enough.” Ouen rolled his eyes. “If I hadn’t shown up, that Oban would still be dragging you behind him. You would be nice and sane, and a prisoner.”

He didn’t really want to think about the other things that might have been included in the Shifter’s fate so he stopped short at that point, helping Ta’ruk clear out his wounds. There were many on his back; they were quite shallow and light on their own accounts, and if Ouen had had one or two scrapes like that he probably wouldn’t have noticed anything. But Ta’ruk had been dragged, who knows for how long, and the dozens of scrapes no doubt contributed to one fairly significant ache. Ouen was as careful as he could be, rubbing his fingers over the boy’s cool, silvery skin.

As the other went to scrape some root powder, Ouen resumed scanning the branches overhead. Having spent the last few years roaming wild in the jungle, he was pretty good at finding places to sleep… and now he had best find a comfortable one, sheltered from the river breeze and soft enough not to bother their wounds.

He found one such spot a little above the far bank, and waded across the river to climb up into the tree. Above a fat trunk, the branches spread out broadly. With a bit of effort, he was able to pull some of them together and tie them down with vines, creating a sort of dish-shaped nest. Across this foundation he laid a bed of broad-leafed ferns, cushioning against the knots and twists in the branches. He layered some leaves on the branches above as well, sheltering them from the chance of rain and creating a rather cozy hiding-place in the middle (perhaps there were other Obans around, after all).

“Ta’ruk!” He called out, squinting to spot the other boy in the dark. “Are you done? Come up here!”

*offers Ta'urk to Ouen* hey go to town XD Great way to figure things out is by being in that situation and going what now?

“Fair point.” Ta’ruk did not even want to speculate what it would be like would have been like to end up in the slave markets of Oba. He worked hard scrapping the roots and made sure to toss some of the scrapings on his own back while more of it he put onto his shin wrap that was now going to serve as a basket while he worked. Not the prettiest image but it would do well enough. While he was still scrapping he heard Ouen shout down at him. Looking up in the general direction of the noise he sighed. It was going to be a pain to get the bark scrapings on if Ouen was already high up in the air. Still at least there was a place for them to sleep if Ouen had checked it first. When he was done he moved to the water’s edge once more and dipped his sash so that it was soaking wet and they could use it to help dap bark scrapping in if need be. Once that was handled he moved to the base of the tree and was starring up in the darkness trying to find a way up. Curling up the scrapings he tucked them into his pants to try and feel his way up slowly. His muscled very much hated him by this point but the other option was to sleep on the ground and he was rather leery of that idea at the moment. So stumbling through the climb was his best option. Several times he looked up and was glad that shifter’s skin was so pale as to be easily seen in the briefest of lights from the stars or he would have been doomed when it came to finding Ouen in the little shelter he had made. It of course helped that Ouen was looking out and checking his progress.. and of course being Ouen. “I’m here.” Ta’ruk pulled out the shin wrap to hand up to Ouen first just in case the movement from the last bit of the climb up into the shelter caused any trouble for him. “Don’t drop that unless you wanna go down and find it.” Ta’ruk’s voice didn’t even sound threatening when he tried.

hee hee. well, since Ouen's p. much a kid he basically 'flirts' by teasing people.

“You’re slow!” Ouen laughed down at Ta’ruk, more amused than teasing. Sure, his own wounds had ached as he climbed, but Ouen was used to being scratched up and bruised. The trees were his safe refuge, and he never hesitated to scramble up to the high branches. But after a while Ta’ruk made it up to their nest, announcing his arrival and handing Ouen a scrap of cloth. It looked like the cloth he had worn wrapped around his shins earlier, but it smelled strongly of bark.

“Finally.” He giggled, taking the bag from him and hanging it from one of the branches above. “It won’t fall, don’t worry. But I’ll get us something to eat first, or else the the bark will slide right off my skin and you’ll throw a fit.”

He reached out playfully, poking Ta’ruk’s nose with one silvery finger. “Sit tight.”

The prentice swung over the edge of their nest, following a leaning branch to some hanging fruit. These and some others he gathered into a fold in his trophy-sash before returning to his companion’s side. “Here, look. A celebratory feast! Let’s eat first, and then finish with the tree-bark -- or it’ll get all over my fingers and make the fruit taste funny. Where’s my knife?”

He took the borrowed blade back from Ta’ruk, wiped it off on the side of his trousers and sliced open some of the fruit. “Which kind do you like best?”

That's fine. Right now it seems Ta'urk is a bit dense in that area. All good.

“I’m careful no slow.”
Ta’ruk hurt from the climb and there was a little stinging in some places where he hadn’t quite managed to get all the bark on where it should be. He wrinkled his nose and swatted at Ouen’s hand half heartedly. “Don’t fall or so help me I will point and I will laugh at you. A hero shouldn’t have that happen to them right?” He hoped that Ouen’s sense of heroics might be enough to make him think and act with a caution if he knew a repercussion would not always be a positive thing. He watched Ouen work while trying not to imagine a single slip resulting in the over exuberant shifter’s death.

Finally when Ouen was slicing fruit Ta’ruk shook his head. “right now I’d eat anything that isn’t going to bite me back or poison me.” It really was true for the most part as well. He was tired sore, hungry and just wanted to sleep and not end up waking in horror of being captured by obans. A small part of his weary mind wondered if this was all a dream and he would wake in the morning to find he had been captured, not rescued and half dead. Deciding it was best not to go down that line of thought he decided another. “I don’t care either way sweet or sour, but I like meaty foods the most.” He held out his hand to get some of the fruit not bothering to point out that there was enough bark on his hands that he had likely missed he might well have the issue Ouen talked about. Ta’ruk just didn’t care at this point.

lololol. x3
i guess these two can just chat a little and we can finish up the rp with them going to bed all snuggled up in their nest?

“Being careful makes you slow.” Ouen shrugged casually. “You don’t spend much time in the trees, by the looks of it. You just have to get used to it, it’s not one bit as dangerous as you think.”

Ouen knew what he was doing -- even injured, each of his movements easily accounted for the sway and bend of the branch below him, so that he always ended up precisely where he wanted, within reach of the ripest fruit. He leaned back in their little nest and offered Ta’ruk a fruit he thought the boy might like, then picked one of his own favorites from the pile. It had a spiky green outside, but if you held it just right you could peel back the skin to reveal soft, white flesh. The taste was sweet, sour and fragrant all at the same time, and the juices ran down his chin when he bit into it.

“Besides, you know.” He continued their conversation from before, content to while away the evening in idle chatter. “I wouldn’t mind hearing you laugh. You’ve barely even smiled yet. How are we supposed to celebrate our victory without a good laugh?”

Well, that wasn’t quite true -- he had heard the boy laugh before, when he was telling stories about his sister. But that laugh had faded quickly, and into sadness, so Ouen wasn’t sure if that counted at all.

“Want some?” He tossed the rest of his fruit to Ta’ruk, then reached for the strip of cloth that held all the bark scrapings. He scooped some of this up with his fingers and started rubbing it around his wounds.

Ta’ruk shook his head. “Yes but a bit of tempered will helps to keep you safe and alive. As for the trees. I do spend quite a bit. I grew up in Neued after all.” It was just that lately he had spend far more time on the ground on top of that he was sore from his ‘trip’ with the Oban. Ta’ruk listed off a few reasons in his mind why Ouen was being vary reckless but that stopped when the boy brought his lack of laughter. Ta’ruk had the fruit peeled and was just starting to lift it to his mouth. He hadn’t really thought about that. He supposed he was a bit more serious than other prentices his age and then with the troubles Neued had before the fighting and then with the fighting he had sobered more. Not wanting to worry his rescuer he rolled his eyes. “Ha ha ha.The laugh was a dry one but at least a laugh and at the end he actually had a smile on his face. That one was not mock at all. “So does that count or do you have to do the victory laugh for it to work?” It was then Ouen had given him the rest of the fruit. “eh? Thanks.” He nibbled keeping an eye and ear on Ouen. “Let me know if you need help. After all I can’t have my savior missing a spot and winding up with a fever from an infection later. I might double as a damsel in distress but I’m no healer’s aid.” It was a lame joke in Ta’ruk’s mind but he was making an effort.

But Ouen was already laughing -- laughing at Ta’ruk’s big fake laughter, at his comment about staying safe and alive, at everything. Ouen laughed easily, as easily as he grinned and leaped from tree to tree.

“That’ll have to do, I guess.” He shook his head and used his cleaner fingers to pop a small fruit into his mouth, chewing around the seed as he resumed applying bark scrapings. The substance was making his wounds sting again, but he hummed to distract himself, stretching in rather unlikely ways to cover almost all of his cuts. There were a few on his back that he missed, likely because he didn’t even know they were there, but the prentice seemed to have lost patience with first aid already. He leaned back in their nest, folding his arms behind his head and smiling.

“You know, you owe me.” He started. There was no hiding the bit of mischief that had crept into his voice. “You ought to give me something. In return, I mean.”

“I’m pretty sure coming to your aid rather than letting you get chopped to bits makes us even.” Ta’ruk raised a brow. “Though what else did you have in mind. I’m no musician so making a poem about your valor is right out the door.” He warily glanced at the other before returning to his fruit and savoring each bit. He had traveled to Tale and found he missed Jaunhar and then his ordeal with the Oban only made him more thankful for small blessing such as even this fruit. He really was going to need to learn how to defend himself and figure out how to stay safe or he might well risk such a thing happening again. The only question was where to head. Shifting in his seat he tucked those thoughts to the back of his mind to listen to Ouen talk.

“Weeeell…” Ouen seemed to consider this, remembering how Ta’ruk had charged -- hands tied behind his back and all! -- at the Oban, exactly when Ouen had needed a distraction. It was impressive, that was certain, but… “That doesn’t count. You were helping me help you, after all. You hardly had any choice about it. Me, I could have just let the Oban drag you around as far as the frozen mountains. He didn’t know I was there, I had no threat from him.”

Ouen nodded confidently, looking quite smug in his nest.

“You know what?” he finally ventured, his eyes glinting with mischief. “A kiss wouldn’t hurt. Seeing as I’m your gallant savior and all.”

Suddenly he was sitting up, leaning forward and grinning a big I-double-dare-you grin.

“So how about it?”

Ta’ruk couldn’t help but shiver at the thought being dragged around by that Oban more than he already had. He was sure he was going to be in pain the next morning as it was. There was just something so smug about Ouen’s grin. The bait was childish and silly, but Ta’ruk found himself not willing to ‘loose’. “Well then my gallant savior. Since you put it like that how could I refuse?” Ta’ruk moved forward and while he had considered giving Ouen a kiss on the check or even the forehead that small competitive part wanted to shock and put Ouen down a peg. So Ta’ruk gave Ouen a kiss on the lips instead of all those other options. He felt silly for doing such but also wan’t going to back down before Ouen did.

dorks. xD

Ok, to be honest, he hadn’t really expected Ta’ruk to go for it. It was kind of childish, this whole thing, and all he’d really been trying to do was tease the other shifter (because maybe he was just a little bit sadistic, and seeing the boy uncomfortable was a lot of fun). So when Ta’ruk leaned in and gave him a peck straight on the lips, Ouen’s eyebrow shot up immediately.

They sat there a moment, looking at each other and… probably both feeling incredibly silly.

“Ok.” Ouen finally giggled, wiping the back of his hand across his lips (not that there had been anything particularly gross about the kiss, but he was a kid and not particularly used to the sensation). “That’ll have to do.”

For all of his bravado, it was pretty clear that Ouen wasn’t sure what else to day.

“Let’s rest up.” He shrugged, rolling onto his side and curling up with an arm tucked under his head. “I’m pretty beat.”

Yes but they are our dorks~

The giggle was kind of irritating. It wasn’t Ta’ruk’s fault he didn’t have a lot of practice kissing, and kissing Ouen had been fairly impulsive and… ugh what was the point. He shouldn’t care. “Hey for a that’s for saving me kiss that should definitely have to do since I already said I wasn’t a damsel in distress. Next time save a girl.” Curling up himself Ta’ruk humphed. He knew he was going to be sore so took some time trying to find a position to rest in. He lay there for a few moments in the darkness before he spoke to Ouen not even sure if the other was awake. “Hey Ouen… Thanks for saving me.” Turning his head away from the other shifter he just hoped he would have a nice quite night with no nightmares. The last thing he wanted was to wake up screaming and looking even more helpless in front of Ouen. He’d never get the chance to live it down.

yusss. o w o
ok, i'm pretty much good to finish this off. this work for you?

Ouen giggled again, this time about Ta’ruk’s grumbles about damsels and girls, then quietened down to sleep. He was exhausted but also exhilarated, excited by the events of the day and still swelling pridefully after his victory.

They lay in silence for a while, and Ouen smiled into the darkness, knowing his face was hidden from sight. When Ta’ruk spoke up again to thank him, Ouen said nothing, pretending perhaps that he was already asleep… but he smiled a little wider, shifter eyes glimmering happily under the filtered light of the moon.

He was glad that he had chosen to jump off that tree. Even if no one ever found out and even if they didn’t write songs or tell stories about it, Ta’ruk was safe -- in Jauhar, in the jungle, in his home.
