“…lots of languages getting lost.” He said and shook his head sadly from side to side. “You speak it then?” He asked curiously. “… maybe should teach others here… Aro and I, at least we both speak maori, could be like, another form of navajo code talkers, Gae-l-tachet?” he tried pronouncing the word as best he could.

Harland beamed, "Ta ag caint as Gaeilge; I do speak Irish, yeah. It fades from my memory in pieces now an' then, though," Harland admitted. "Never met 'im," Harland said, of Aro, "Not sure anyone'd want to know-- besides, it'd be a little inconvenient now 'n again... I've developed a bad habit of callin' people what they mean to me as Gailge."
Like Alistaire. Harland had been calling him my heart for weeks, months before he'd told Alistaire. "Music as Gailge is beautiful, though; if I miss one thing it's hearin' a lullaby in my own tongue."

“Well…” Zac considered. “If yeh ever want to just practice feel free to have a go at it here eh? I’ll reply to…whatever it sounds like in Maori and we can have the best conversation that no one can ruddy understand.” He grinned. “May do a bit of cussing myself.” He admitted. “Though sometimes it’s just because I can’t be bothered being polite enough to try and reign in my slang either.”

"That's by far the strangest offer I've received since wakin' up here, and somehow also one of the most appealin'," Harland said, laughing. He paused for a moment, utterly confused, trying to figure out what Zac was saying; he didn't get it, because honestly he didn't really swear. He hated poor manners, and he was rarely so upset he needed to swear in the first place. Even when he'd almost died, all he did was find Alistaire and lean against him. That, in and of itself, had been forbidden.
Harland laughed. "Ah, no! I meant... for example, I called someone my heart for months. It's a way t' tell someone exactly what they mean t' me without spookin' 'em," Harland explained.

Zac’s eyebrows raised then his smile widened. “Ah yeah? Did he spook then? Or have you told him?” He looked fascinated. “I hope he didn’t spook.” He added with that grin still on his face.

Harland smiled, and thought about it. "I'm fairly certain he's guessed as much, but I haven't told him, no," Harland said, "It's one of those things I think he'll accept so long's I don't make him come to terms with it on the spot."
"I'm not a terribly subtle person, Zac," Harland said, laughing at his own expense.

"Well…sometimes that works to your advantage." He said with a smile. "You want me to check and see what he thinks?" He tipped his head. "Or I can wait, I'm pretty new…that's probably not a great offer to make this early in the game eh?"

"No point, I suspect I know what he thinks," Harland said, with a smile, "but it's kind of ye to offer, an' I won't forget that."
Harland paused for a moment. "I'm glad ye woke, an' I think it'd be nice to keep in touch," he said, after contemplation. He'd actually really like to have Zac as an ally, and hopefully a friend.

“Absolutely Mate.” He nodded. “Absolutely, always willing to take on new friends.” “When you take this off, no hot showers for a while ok? Can sap the color out, DO… use this.” He fished in a drawer and handed you a lotion. “Vasaline seems close but its not, it’ll smother yer skin.” The tapped the bottle again. “Don’t use too much either, here…skin should feel like…this when you’re done.” He squeezed out a smidge of lotion and rubbed it on the back of your hand before pulling the cover off and applying a fine layer to your new tattoo. “There, smarts I’m sure, at least a little.” “… and ah… I’m glad you came by for this, there’s something very… special about putting a mark on someone that’s going to be part of them. This is…this is as close as you’ll have to Ta Moko, it will be with you till you die, only death can take this and what it means away from you. “Ready for the mirror?” He grinned. “… and you can start planning your next” He winked. “Maybe you and yer friend, you’ll get paired ones one day.”

Harland couldn't help but laugh as Zac suggested maybe one day he'd get a tattoo with Alistaire. It was radically unlikely.
"It did hurt a bit, I suppose," Harland said, admitting it stung to have lotion rubbed on a raw wound. He looked at it in the mirror, and Zac was right about one thing: he was already dreaming of his next. But that would be a long time in the future, he suspected, as he healed this one.
"It's amazin', an' your work's commendable; thanks again for takin' this on," Harland said. There was a tip in the envelope already, but Harland was certain he deserved it.
"I'll follow all your instructions, can be certain of that," he agreed. "I can guess wearin' clothin' over this will hurt if it touches the tattoo," Harland suddenly realized.

“Not so bad, but wear loose clothes alright? CLEAN loose clothes.” He added firmly. “Nothing that sat on the floor, wash clothes frequently, use unscented soap, gentle unscented soap, if you need some grab someone with tattoos who can make a trip off island alright? I don’t have any on me or I’d give you some ok?” He smiled reassuringly.

Harland figured the beach soap would work.
"Guess I'll do laundry when I get back t' my room," he joked, with a grin directed at Zac. "It's like ye know me."
The unscented soap part was no trouble at all.
"Zac, I appreciate your work, an' your patience. Ye've been a blessin' in disguise," Harland said, reaching one hand out to shake Zac's. It was an automatic gesture. The Harland-equivalent of a friendly hug, he supposed.

"No trouble at all mate, tattoos mean a lot to the people who get them, and even to to people who want them. It can just be that it's fun or…something deeper." He patted at his own shoulder where just a touch of tattoo could be seen out from under the edge of his shirt. "So any time mate, come back and see me if it acts up or you get any trouble with it eh?" He took the offered hand and gave it a solid, yet not competitive shake.
