Setting the beer down (good lord this was nasty s**t), Jack started back on the curry as he listened. It honestly wasn't half-bad as he'd said, and the spices warmed him like nothing else. And look at that, Chel had actually been trying.
"You told Chris and?" he prompted.

"Aaaand we kind of came up with nothing," she admitted. Even though he clearly didn't the beer (Chel didn't understand why taste was so important with alcohol- you never drank it for taste), she was happy to see he was enjoying the food.
That was probably the only victory she'd be getting tonight. "We're not as smart as you, Mr. Braniac. We couldn't really come up with a solution for dealing with Evan that didn't draw even MORE attention to ourselves. I mean s**t, there's already 3 more people involved with this than I wanted there to be. Five if you count Robert and Mimsy, whoever the ******** they are." Chel still had yet to figure out the identity of the other two mystery hunters in their guild.
"So he's gonna help me by helpin' me avoid Evan." And that was it. That was the grand plan.

He looked up at the ceiling, took a deep breath, and sighed through his nose rather dramatically.
"Genius. What I meant," Jack said as he dropped his gaze to her, "was how you're approaching your future relationship with Penumbra."

He caught her mid-bite (she had expected him to talk for longer than that), and held up her finger for a moment while she chewed.
When she had swallowed, she returned with, "What do you think I should do?" What she would have said is that she wanted to continue being friends with them in secret. But that was inevitably a stupid answer in Jack's eyes, so she needed to know what the correct thing to say was.

"Do I have to spell out everything for you?" he grumbled, digging into the curry more. "You want to be friends with them, fine. At least get information about Halloween while you're at it. Make the relationship beneficial for you so you can keep it without worrying when the scythe'll come down on your head."

Chel seemed to be fated to always butt heads with Jack. "Look, I know this may seem foreign to ya, but friends don't use friends for information. Shun and them? They're friends."
His idea was interesting though. She did enjoy her time in the haunted house talking with Quillan, and she did like the infiltration she'd done in a golem suit. It had been fun getting to know about different parts of Halloween. Giving that information would be hard to do.
She was getting to the end of her plate, which meant she was going to clear off dishes to grab bowls for their next "course." It was hardly a course.
"And yeah, you're gonna have to spell things out for me always. Dyslexic, remember?" Now she was just being cheeky.

He snorted at the joke and then went back to his glaring. "Oh for God's sake, Craft--Horsemen. At least see if they know anything about the ******** horsemen if you're going to be like that. Make connections, infiltration, s**t, I don't know. This is your problem. Why the ******** am I helping you with your problem."

"OH," Chel said, finally getting the picture. "Oh my god yeah. That'd be AWESOME. Shun and I already talked about the horsemen and-" She looked up at him impishly and said, "That's so ******** smart man."
She then reached up to a cupboard and grabbed some bowls (very tiny and very plastic because hunter life is poor life) and put them out. Then the grand finale came in the form of a carton of coffee ice cream being pulled from the fridge.
"Tadah!" she said, "Payment for your great idea." A laugh followed and she handed him the ice cream scoop, because hell if she was going to do it right. If she scooped it he would probably tell her it was too much or too little- better to just let him do it himself. "I will accept praise and applause now."

Jack gave a long-suffering sigh and ran a hand down his face, wondering how exactly he managed to tolerate stupid bitches like this. It wasn't even a smart idea, it was common sense. Jesus.
He was prepping some half-hearted words to excuse himself, but then he saw it. Ice cream. ******** coffee ******** ice ******** cream. She really did remember.
Taking the carton and scooper, he proceeded to pop the top off, squeezed the scooper between his hands to give it some heat, dug and twisted it into the ice cream, and began to eat straight from the scooper. Then he did it again without so much as a glance at Chel.
There was such quiet enthusiasm, such wonder behind his motions, it was almost like Jack had spontaneously became a child.

"What are you doing?" he asked as he finished it off and began getting a fifth, brain freezes be damned.

"Cherishing our memories, Jack," she said nonchalantly.
Oddly, she didn't get her own ice cream (she actually didn't like coffee ice cream very much, but that wasn't the reason) instead opting to stand up and shuffle around in her closet. "But wait, there's more!" she announced, pulling out a big box. It wasn't wrapped because chel wasn't that kind of person.
It was literally a box. "Come on down contestant number one, 'cause you've just wooon-" the box was then flipped over, "-A brand new coffee machine thing!" Chel had no ******** clue if it was good or not. She'd just gone with what the sales lady had pitched to her.
She looked at Jack sort of expectantly, wondering what his response would look like.

It looked like a frozen-with-his-mouth-still-on-the-ice-cream-scoop sort of look. Jack finished it quickly, set the carton down, and tennis-balled his gaze between Chel and the box several times. His eyes narrowed.
"What's this about?" he asked suspiciously.

Chel tilted her head. Gears seemed to turn and click until she got it. "Oh right, you're a lifer. Look it's got no price tag on it. I just thought since you had such a s**t mission you deserved something not sucking in your life."
She set it down on the counter and said, "Now you won't need coffee bitches, you can just make it yourself~" A panicked frown came on her face, "Do you not like it? 'Cause I can take it back and get a different one? The sales lady told me it was like top of the line or whatever, but honestly I don't know anything about coffee."
