They reached the opposite end of the long hall, and passed through the common room.

"Uh... I-I think fun is against the rules." Oliver muttered before he could hold back that immediate response. His cheeks turned a little pink. "N-not much, uh... There is a gym, a-and a path around the island for jogging... And... um... sleeping..."

Chance was definitely asking the wrong person. Oliver's day usually consisted of sleeping, lab or infirmary duty, and some sort of unpleasant exercise that was supposed to improve his ability to survive yet another month on the island. He thought it might be easier to just paddle out for a swim, the many sea creatures out there would insure he would never have to worry about sore muscles and unshakeable exhaustion ever again.

"Some hunters have books or games, or a TV" he finally added, glancing back at the other trainee.

Chance gave Oliver a slightly startled look, eyes wide - and then he laughed, the sound echoing down the dormitory hallway.

"No fun allowed, is that right?" he asked, a grin spreading across his face, almost reaching his eyes, but not quite. "Against the rules to have a good time? That's almost as bad as having a curfew during school, but I catch your drift. Work before play, right?"

He shook his head a little, still smiling, and then added, "The gym sounds pretty casual, and napping is always a good thing, but those are just basic. I suppose people find their own fun on the island, though. The definition of fun, is, of course, entirely subjective."

Chance's dark eyes surveyed Oliver somewhat curiously. "A TV? I assume those are the more experienced hunters?"

The laughter was a surprise, startling Oliver in turn. He had expected little more than another pleasant smile.

"Yeah, a-and there is always a lot of work..." He didn't want to admit that his time spent jogging and strength training also felt like work, it was necessary for his survival, not his sanity. "But some hunters have more time than I do, Ripley is building a rock climbing wall in his spare time, a ways down the beach. And I know there are poker games some evenings." Oliver was not going to mention the number of times he had walked past a room where someone was losing badly at strip poker.

When Chance asked about the TV though, Oliver smiled. "Yeah, it can cost a lot to get electronics over here. N-not the electronics themselves, they are regular prices... But normal stuff doesn't work. It all has to be modified for runic technology, and that can be really expensive."

The Life trainee reminded himself to ask Noemi if she had gotten her 3DS runic'd yet, and how much that part of the system had cost. He had no real time to play games, but the island would seem a little less dismal with something so familiar in his hands.

His eyebrows rose a little, Chance lifting a hand to rub absently at the back of his neck, fingers trailing over an old, hidden scar just beneath the collar of his shirt. "A rock wall sounds pretty cool. Definitely can be more interesting than just jogging around in circles, if you ask me. And poker is pretty cool, if played with the right rules."

He cast a sideways glance at Oliver again, his dark eyed gaze inscrutable, though they seemed to be trying to decipher something about him. "Interesting," Chance said, somewhat musingly, and then added, "Well, I'm not really all that into TV watching anyway, so it's not really that big of a deal. Books are more my thing. Or maybe games."

"It's kind of scary, right near the beach..." Oliver muttered, oblivious to the glance he was receiving. He led them out of the building and past the training field towards the cafeteria, but he seemed to be avoiding meeting Chance's eyes.

At least until games were mentioned. "You play games? Like videogames?" Oliver did look up at that point, with an innocently hopeful expression. That had been his hobby of choice before recruitment, and he didn't have many opportunities to share his enthusiasm. It could be said that was the only reason he had been able to become friends with Finn, in that weird MMO dream he had been able to be a bit more confident, and a bit more sure of himself knowing there was some anonymity behind it. He never felt quite as shy when he got to express his love of gaming.

"Scary in what way, exactly?" Chance asked, somewhat interested by this idea, as he followed Oliver around a building. The other seemed very nervous, less confident in himself than everyone else Chance had met so far, but he wasn't unpleasant, and he certainly wasn't unfriendly.

He smiled. "Video games, yeah," he said, "I used to play a lot in the home. Card games too. Why, you play?"

"Um, just... scary because... things..." Oliver muttered, looking down at his sleeves. "There are lots of monsters out there, by the beach. You know... sea monsters."

"Ah, here we are, this building here," Oliver said, pushing the doors open and holding it for the new trainee. "I play a lot of- well, I used to play a lot of video games. Now I don't have time for it, but I really wish I did. What kinds of games did you play?"

Chance thought about pressing for further information, but caught sight of Oliver's studious attention to the floor, and decided against it. "Sea monsters sounds pretty exciting to me," he said, with a small laugh. "But I suppose that's not really a good word for them."

He slid inside the building, giving Oliver a nod in thanks, and glanced around. "Mostly messed around in Super Smash, but I also did some Call of Duty and some of those other games like that. Shadow of the Colossus was pretty cool too. A few handheld stuff, a few computer games. Basically a little variety."

"I-I'll have to show you sometime," Oliver replied. "The little ones go right up to the shoreline, but the big ones are more dangerous when you are out diving..." He was routinely asked to catch the little ones for lab samples. In fact, he was starting to get pretty good at it.

"I really liked that one, Shadow of the Colossus. It has such big monsters!" This time he actually smiled. "The shooters were okay, but those games where you just go attack things were my favourites. Like Monster Hunter. That one had pretty big monsters too."

Finally they had arrived at the cafeteria.

"How big are we talking here?" Chance asked interestedly. "Big as in giant squid size, or big as in kraken slash megalodon sized? 'Cause there is a definite distinction between the two. Big is a very subjective word."

He flashed Oliver a faint smile, which didn't entirely reach his eyes. "So you like monsters in games, just not in real life?" Chance asked, sounding a little amused, though not condescending. "I like fighting games, or at least, the games where you can be the one fighting rather than standing off to the side and letting someone fight for you."

The cafeteria was entirely underwhelming, not that Chance had expected it to be anything fancy. He glanced around at it.

"Well this is...well. Like middle school all over again."

"Um... yes," Oliver replied, his tone serious. All of the above. He had seen some giant things, but even the smaller giant things were enough to be threatening. "The games are entirely different, even if you die in games it's not final. And when your friends in games get hurt, it's no big deal because they can just respawn and keep on going. We don't... have spawn points."

The little worry crease between Oliver's brows had grown, but at least the new trainee's impressions gave him something else to think on. "It's not so bad. It has, um... Lots of fresh fruit, at least on Mondays and Thursdays, and their Kraft Dinner is pretty good."

Hopefully Chance would realize he was talking to a kid who still ate like a ten year old. "I-if you want other things, once you get island leave you can probably bring back other stuff to eat."

Well, that was certainly interesting. Chance raised his eyebrows again and gave a small laugh. "I guess I should just keep my eyes open then for anything that might try and eat me. Good to know, thanks. Although," he added thoughtfully, tilting his head a little. "I suppose i should remember that little bit about things being permanent here, instead of in games."

This wasn't a game, after all, and he knew it. Chance passed Oliver a sideways glance, his expression inscrutable as he said lightly, "So it's pretty dangerous, then? Being a hunter?"

He already knew the answer to this, really, but having it confirmed was important, and Chance looked around the cafeteria for something to eat. Most of it seemed to be standard school-type foods, lots of processed things and even a big basket of MREs in shiny silver packages (he passed those up). Chance made his way toward the line and picked up a tray.

"I'm good with what's here," he said, and began loading things onto his plates, including the macaroni and cheese. "What's your favorite food?"

"Please... take care of yourself," Oliver muttered, picking up a tray himself. He didn't elaborate, but neither was he sure he wanted to. How could he explain all the horrible things he had seen in the infirmary? There were more ways to get yourself killed than Oliver could count on both hands.

He pushed the tray along, picking up a small portion of macaroni and cheese, and a bottle of apple juice. "Um, I think... the grilled cheese is pretty good. If it's still fresh. But hamburgers are okay...?" The kid didn't sound too sure of himself. What he really liked were candies and salty treats, the sort that provided little to no nutritional value.

Oliver's "encouragement" slash warning made Chance give him a slightly curious look, but he said nothing, merely stuck a peach and an apple onto his tray, along with a granola bar. He passed by the chips and the fried foods, and picked up a bottle of water in the cooler at the end.

"I have to be in the mood for hamburgers," said Chance mildly, as he balanced his tray on one hand, waiting for Oliver to finish getting his food. "I like pasta myself, or sushi, neither of which I suppose is here."

"Everyone can put different things on hamburgers," Oliver said, taking a good, long look at the potato chips. Finally he passed them by. "So even if you don't like the same things other people like, it's still okay."

Never mind that he only put ketchup on his hamburgers.

"Pasta is good too, like spaghetti and Kraft Dinner?" Oliver honestly had no experience with anything beyond those two varieties. Same with the sushi, at mention of that Oliver stared rather skeptically at his macaroni. "Sushi, like... raw fish and stuff?"
