Heidi smiled. "It was really fun, actually. I was in a forest, somewhere in Europe. I mostly spent a lot of time in the base itself learning, like, learning first aid and stuff. Practicing my aim, sniping bad things from trees and rooftops. It was awesome. For the most part, anyway. Some of the outpost had to be rebuilt, it'd been maaaajorly attacked right before I got there."

While Heidi talked, Evan dragged out the biggest skillet he could find. He turned the heat on as he went to the fridge to grab some butter. "Sounds like fun," he said, using the butter to grease up the pan. "Definitely time well spent. Maybe next time the island gets attacked, you can oversee the reconstruction. I'm sure we can paint your hard hat so it's pink and sparkly," he teased.

" Dude that would be the best freakin' hard hat ever!" Heidi laughed. "I wasn't exactly a fan of the construction stuff though. Preferred the other stuff. Y'ever reset a bone in someone's leg before? Dang, dude. It's rough." Whistling, Heidi shook her head and started drumming her hands softly on the countertop. Enough to make a sound but not enough to be irritating. "How's it been here?"

"Really? I would've figured you for liking to build stuff over having to deal with injuries and stuff," Evan told Heidi over his shoulder as he started making the first pancake. "Less messy. You wanna get some plates?" The smell of cooking chocolate was just as soothing as the act of cooking itself. It didn't erase anything that had happened that day, but it put him a little more at ease. He was hungry, too, and that much chocolate wasn't an indulgence he often allowed himself. "It's been pretty rough around here," he admitted. "A bunch of us got firebombed a few months ago after being eaten by some giant ******** sandworm, then there was some bullshit with the monsters--that didn't end well. You were probably better off in Europe. Safer, at least."

Heidi laughed. "I know, right? I've never been good at it, really. That was more my brother's thing. He built the tree house, I broke the tree house. Vicious cycle." She waved a hand at that. It was no big. But when asked to get plates she nodded and hopped down from the stool, collecting two plates and a set of knives and forks for the both of them. She was quiet as she listened to his quick overview of what she had missed around Deus. The forks and knives were set on the island countertop, but the plates were set down by Evan for easy access when he was finished with the pancakes. "Oh yeah? Sounds exciting, at least." She climbed back up onto the stool. "So the usual business here."

"Same s**t, different day," Evan confirmed, poking at the pancake to see how done it was before flipping it over. This was almost surreal, chatting with his best friend's (ex?) girlfriend like it was any other day, like s**t hadn't turned south real damn quick just a few hours ago. Like chocolate chocolate chip pancakes would make anything better. He slid the pancake onto the plate. "You should punch him in the d**k until he sees sense," he said as he put the plate down in front of Heidi, the awkwardness becoming too great to ignore.

She had been all ready to dig into what smelled like the most delicious pancake ever when Evan brought it up. It. There was a clear hesitation in Heidi reaching for her fork and knife before she finally picked them both up, shaking one of them in a vain effort to stop its trembling before she started cutting into the pancake. At first Heidi didn't say anything. Instead she ate her first bite of the pancake, making a sound of approval and offering Evan a smile. She had lost her appetite, in fact the thought of eating was absolutely nauseating to her now, but Heidi needed something normal. And Evan had gone out of his way to make these for them. She ate a second bite. She still hadn't said anything. Finally, "I slapped him." She frowned. "And when I did that he picked me up and put me in the hallway." Her voice got smaller with every word, and she found herself fighting off tears again. The fork and knife were put down and instead she clasped her hands together on her lap, clenching them tightly between her knees and bouncing the heel of her foot on one of the stool rungs. "H-he said.." She cleared her throat, blinking away tears and rubbing her lips together. "S-said he didn't w-want to.. play boyfriend anymore.." You think you're special? You ain't.Heidi knew she wasn't anything special, but she'd liked pretending.. One hand came up to rub at her eyes before she forced herself to cut into the pancake again. Normal. Normal. Normal.

Evan sighed as Heidi told him what happened. A slap was the least of what Tuck deserved. He could see how what had happened during the mission had effected Tuck, but Heidi hadn't done anything to warrant such unnecessary cruelty. Hell, he'd figured Heidi would be the one to snap Tuck out of it. "Don't worry about it too much," he advised. "I'm sure he didn't mean it. Today was a pretty bad day, and people say a lot of s**t they don't mean when they're upset. Just...give him some time to deal with it. You love each other; you'll find a way to work it out." He turned away to rummage in the fridge after putting another pancake on to cook, finally coming up with half a bottle of generic chocolate syrup that must have belonged to some green trainee who thought it had a chance of lasting in there unsupervised. He put it on the counter next to Heidi and added, "But I'm still in favor of punching him in the d**k."

She loved him, but if he loved her as much as he said he did why would he do this to her? Her. Heidi didn't seem entirely convinced. She accepted the offering of chocolate syrup, treating it like normal maple syrup as she poured some of it over her pancake and then gave it back to Evan. "..Why there? That doesn't seem very fair." Heidi was making an attempt at humor, and for once she wasn't sure if it worked or not.

Evan left the bottle with Heidi as he turned back towards the stove. She looked like she needed it. "Well, you slap a guy for doing something wrong, you know, whatever. It'll sting a little, maybe. We all get over it and move on. You hit a guy where it hurts, though?" He shook his head, shuddering at just the thought. "You can be damn sure we won't be doing whatever we did to earn that again. That's a guy secret, by the way. You can't tell other guys that you know that. Or girls. Especially girls."

"Yeah, but...I slapped him in the face. He was hurting me with words, which come from his mouth, which is where I slapped him." Heidi pouted her lips and ate some more of her super extra chocolaty pancake. "'e dint hur'e withiz 'ick," she said around a mouthful of pancake. See? Her logic was sound. Why hurt an innocent bystander?

Evan snorted at Heidi's logic, though he couldn't fault it. "Eat, smartass," he ordered with a smirk and a shake of his head. "How is it? You ready for another one yet?"

Heidi smiled and gave Evan a thumb's up, then waved her hand and shook her head. She waited until her mouth wasn't full anymore before she answered, "s'good! Really good. Thank you, Evan. But I think I'm gonna be full just off this one." Plus talking about what had just happened had made her lose most of her appetite.

Evan was relieved when Heidi said she didn't want any more, because if he hadn't gotten any of these decadently chocolate pancakes for himself he probably would have just given up and cried. It had been that kind of day all around. He nodded and turned back to the stove. "Are you gonna be okay later? I've got an extra sheet if you need it, but we may have to hunt you down a blanket or something."

And now Heidi just felt sick. Her smile faltered as she pushed what was left of her pancake away with a shake of her head. "No, I'm fine. Tuck packed.. everything that was mine and the blanket's one of them...I'll be okay. But thanks, Evan." She didn't feel like she'd be okay, but she'd try.
