Duncan smiled broadly at Zeke, inclining his head. "Thank you," he chuckled. "I'm sure you've heard many a long story about how long it took to find a proper name - well, this one's no different," his chest felt light, and Duncan breathed in as he reached for the pen, "It helps that we've known her as our little girl for so long. I've never stopped thinking about that Christmas."
He signed each appropriate area of the document quickly; and Aina, whose height barely reached the top of the table, stared curiously at his scrawling. She reached out to grab the pen while Duncan wrote, but he lifted the pen away from her, smiling, shaking his head.
"Aina," he poked the tip of her nose, which caused her to blink, "Just a little more patience."
Aina tapped the tip of her nose with her palm. She looked up at Zeke, pouting - "Aina," her wings fluttered; "Ainaaa. Duncan," she tugged at Duncan's sleeve; and, finally, she pointed at Zeke. "Home?"

To Duncan's words about finding a name, Zeke nodded. He knew the struggle well, not only from those he had seen through the entire process but also from his own experience. As the other man continued on, Zeke felt that growing fondness only continue for him. Aina, as she was now known, was going to be in wonderful hands.
Speaking of the child Frei, Zeke watched her attempt to snatch the pen with a twinkle in his eye and a chuckle on his lips. It seemed to him she was a curious type already and he had to wonder just how much of Duncan's home would be moved around in the coming days purely because she wanted to know, see, and experience what things he - and by extension now, she - owned. He pressed the back of his hand to his lips to stifle a laugh at the very thought.
"Home?"
He finally realized she had spoken and was both looking and pointing at him expectantly. It took the vet a moment but then he realized what she was doing.
"No, no, sweetheart." He crouched down to her height with a shake of his head and pointed to himself, index finger pressed to his chest. "Zeke. My name is Zeke." In turn he pointed to each of them in the room and spoke their names. "Duncan. Aina. Zeke.
"But don't worry," as if finding out his name wasn't what she thought would distress her in any way, "you'll find out what 'home' is really soon, I promise! Once Duncan is all done you two will go home together. Would you like that?"

Aina pouted as she processed Zeke’s correction, perfectly quiet - after he explained, she pointed toward him, nodding. ”Zeke,” she responded firmly, as if she’d known all along - she glanced down at the floor as she said the names over again. “Duncan.. Aina… Zeke....” She clutched her hands together and stared up at the eager veterinarian explaining things in sounds she couldn’t quite understand - but she was patient, arms clinging around her guardian’s sleeve..
”Aha!” Duncan looked up from his paperwork, just on time as Zeke mentioned his name. He glanced through the paperwork again, to make sure he hadn’t missed any spots, before handing it back to the younger gentleman. Hand in hand with Aina, Duncan smiled at the two of them. ”That should be it for the paperwork. Shall we?”
”Mm…” with a pause, Aina smiled again at Zeke and his question, wings fluttering - she was eager to move forward. Something in her told her that there was something much bigger beyond this small box she was born in, and she was excited to see it.

He beamed at her when she grasped his name so quickly, nodding enthusiastically when she pointed to him and repeated it for all to hear.
"You got it, little lady." A wink followed his words just before Duncan proclaimed his completion of the form signing. With only the slightest grunt Zeke got back on his feet and took what was offered. He flipped through each page, eyeballed the spots that had been signed, and nodded once again. "Everything seems to be in order on your side of things! Give me one second here..."
There was no need to wait for them to get back to the lobby before he signed. Taking the pen in hand, the vet signed his name and the date on the final line that was reserved for the staff member seeing this new pair off and then blew on the ink to dry it all the quicker. Satisfied, he closed the paperwork and the folder it was kept in and made a grand gesture to the man and the small girl hanging off his arm.
"And with that, you two are officially a pair! If you'll follow me, we'll make a quick stop at the lobby so I can file this puppy away and then we can get going!"
He was eager to see them off in the best way possible. It wasn't often he got to witness a Raevan's first car ride or the first reaction to their new home. Maybe he should have brought his camera.
"Okay! Now that that's settled, if you and Aina are ready to rock and roll, I am too!" As exciting as these proceedings were sure to be, he would at least remain courteous enough to make sure the two most important people in the room were set beforehand. Aina was of particular note here and Zeke let his gaze fall to the child Frei as his words were left to hang, curious to see what she thought of the big, open lobby in comparison to the cozy little office room she had just been in.

Duncan couldn’t help but laugh in delight when Zeke confirmed that the papers were done - smiling brightly, he swung Aina’s hand somewhat and glanced down at her. She giggled, too, swinging her hand with him in return, wings fluttering slowly. ”We’re all done, Aina! Can you believe it?”
Aina smiled wide at him. She glanced back at Zeke when he piped up again, and with a small nod, she hovered toward him - Duncan walked alongside her, nodding.
”We’re both as ready as can be,” Duncan grinned, ”Thank you, Zeke.”
