Naevius had always been an attentive listener, and it was handy when she had impromptu meetings with soldiers like this. It gave her a mostly honest opinion on how their troops were feeling and allowed her to gauge the moral. So the soldiers were raring to go were they? It was understandable. Neued had been an overwhelming success for the Obans and surely a lot of the soldiers wanted to keep that momentum going, at least she knew Saraf did.

It made her heart swell, that he at least seemed to show sympathy for the beast tamers. Although some might be indifferent to it, Naevius loved all animals with all her heart and it had been a discouraging blow for her. She kept quiet as he began speaking and it occurred to her that it seemed like this was something he had thought quite a bit about, especially with his little tag at the end that seemed almost like an afterthought that he threw in after looking around them.

"It makes sense. a network of spies could be influential. But remember, 'humble, unranked soldiers' are what win the wars. Captains and generals may give the orders, but its the soldiers that carry them out. I think you have more influence than you think." She told him with a smile. It was true, of course. No matter what orders the higher ups gave, if the soldiers didn't follow them, or didn't follow them well, it didn't make any difference.

Saraf nodded his head, "Ours is the blood that is spilled, but those with rank are the ones in charge, the ones that give the orders, and in the end the one that decide the fate of not only the enemy but our allies as well. They never respond well to those that they think are trying to step on their toes so it's best to remain cautious with ones words when they may be within hearing distance." It didn't help that if he was heard trash talking those in power that they would not only look down upon him but it might ruin his chances of climbing in the ranks. He meant to become more then just a soldier one day, more then just a fatherless b*****d as well.

Turning to Naevius he gave a smile, "I thank you for listening." There weren't a lot of people with power who would listen to the musings of someone like him and actually consider his words. It was nice to see that there was someone amongst those higher up that weren't looking out for personal glory alone. Not that Saraf could talk, right now that was one of the most important things to him, but it was due to wanting recognition. One couldn't drag himself up in the ranks without backing after all and it was something he would need to prove himself time and again to get, "Solider or not, rank or not, I will still do all that I can for king and country." Even if it meant cutting a swath through the land himself to clear a path for their people. He just wanted what was best for Oba and its people and he could just imagine what they could do with such resources at their disposal. More room to move and breath, of that much at least he was certain.

Naevius nodded respectfully at him. He was right, of course, and it said something to her. It was sad that people like her, nobles, above and below her, controlled the lives of so many with their decisions. It was people like Saraf, that gave people like her father and her father's cousin the king power. "It's understandable. And really, there is no need for thanks. I wish more would listen to our soldiers. It can be a very effective tool for measuring moral and finding problems that people may be too worried about getting in trouble to tell their superiors about. If there were more conversation between the ranks, the army as a whole would be more effective. I've learned that in my short time with the army, and hopefully, I can relay it back home. I thank you." She said, giving him another respectful nod.

Saraf smiled, finding this woman to be one that he could easily respect and follow, someone who was willing to listen to the soldiers was a rare find indeed, "If you keep that attitude I feel that you will have many who will be more then happy to follow you loyally, there are too few who are like you." He said, feeling that he too would be only too happy to serve one such as her. She listened, and that was the most simple thing a leader could do to gain the resepct and loyalty of all those around them. Too few would do something so simple though, enjoying to separate themselves from those who were 'below' them.

A voice from off to one side caught Saraf's attention, causing him to turn for a moment. He spotted one of the higher ups, before he glanced back at Naevius. Saraf gave her a smile before he said, "If you could excuse me? I see the one I need to talk with before I am able to go out on my patrols." He explained to her, then added, "It's been nice, Naevius, if you'd like I'd enjoy chatting with you again, perhaps once I am done with my patrols."

Nodding her head slightly in respect, Naevius was glad for the praise. That very attitude was something she was bent on keeping, as she thought it was the most effective way to get things done. It was promising that the soldiers seemed to think so as well. It was funny that you could earn more loyalty by simply listening than you could with all the money in the world.

As Saraf's attention was drawn away, Nae smile. When it appeared their conversation was at an end, she stood and took a step back. "Of course. It has been very nice speaking with you as well. Be safe out there. May the Gods continue to watch over you." She wished him, bowing slightly towards him. If their meeting wasn't already over, her actions would have clearly said it was over. She didn't wait to see him leave, but instead, turned around, the task of overhearing the conversation long out of her mind.
