If he was going to need to come to the market a lot to live, things were about to get a lot more difficult for the illiterate, muted shetani. Great. Somehow he'd figure out a way to make due, but it'd probably take a good amount of time before he became proficient at the process. Hopefully his powers would help, but for how bright the city was, he wasn't exactly sure if his shadows really 'fit in.'

It wasn't as if he really 'fit in' either though.

A nearly-audible sigh of relief escaped his lungs as Nephi declared that they were free from the chaos. To this he returned a more hesitant laugh of his own, only wondering how he was going to get by.

Nodding once to the declaration of the mission, he gripped his satchel and moved closer to the teen. Malek's eyes seemed to drift upwards in wonder as they walked, feeling more and more out of place as everything about them became more pristine and grandiose. How ever would he fit in here?

Was there even anypae here? He could hear their footsteps echoing with each movement.

The library?

Eyes widened, the shetani took a few steps closer to look at the building. In this one location, so much knowledge was stored, ready for any willing to take the time to search for it. Any able to read, that was. Looking back at Nephi, he didn't let the disappointment and frustration show in his face. He couldn't talk; couldn't read... What was he good for again? At this he gave a single head-nod in his guide's direction, signaling that he had taken heart to what had been shown to him today.

Perhaps some day he'd be able to make use of this place.

But, for now it was lost to him.

Malek looked so full of wonder when he approached, eyes wide. Nephi knew that was the right reaction. The Library was the pride of the City -- well, one of the prides, anyway -- perhaps just behind the Castle...

Nephi nodded in response to Malek, before heading further towards the end of the passageway. He suddenly stopped for what seemed to be no particular reason, heading over to a board that had a couple other pae gathered around it. There were a few notices located on the board, some relevant to the Guardians and others relevant to events. In fact, the Guardians' notice that Malek was called on was pinned right there...

"There's boards like this all over town, by the way. Messages from the Guardians will be located on these boards."

Once he knew Malek acknowledged this -- and finished looking at the notices if he was interested -- Nephi headed towards the largest building in the town, a large spire reaching up towards the sky.

"If you feel called to the Guardians, I should show you this. You will often find us Squires here, or the Castle Wardens." To this, he showed a genuine smile. "Perhaps one of them are around. Let me see..."

He darted up the stairs for a moment, looking for anyone nearby, before returning with a ... surprisingly not daunting mellon ... decked in armour.

"Who is this pleb, Nephi!"

"His name is Malek, Lord Andrei. He has felt the calling of the Guardians." There was a pause, before the mellon gave a gruff noise of approval. "Malek, this is Knight Lord Andrei. I have a feeling you may be dealing with him in the future."

... Wasn't that the truth...

Malek was quick to notice the young squire's movements away, more easily following after him that in previous instances. For how little he understood the boards, just the information that they carried the will of the Guardians' was useful enough. He'd have to find a way to interpret them.

Again, maybe he'd need to learn to read; wouldn't he enjoy that?

A single nod was all that was needed before they were again moving, this time to the largest of buildings it seemed. A tower stretching far into the distance, spiraling and magnificent as anything the young adult had even seen. Even more so. Looking to Nephi, he again nodded once and paused to re-situate his personal belongings, or what little he had come with. After all, all he really owned were the four items he'd gotten on the Guardians' quest. His family wasn't one for keeping items for purely sentimental reasons, as there simply wasn't often enough room in the home.

The home of the squires... and the wardens? Who were they? Not as if his facial expression even had time to ask before he was alone two blinks happening in the time it took for a new mellon to be introduced.

A mellon, was it? In armor?

A pleb? What did that even mean?

Looking from Nephi for the explanation to Lord Andrei, the shetani gave a politely curt nod in recognition. If only he knew just how acquainted they were going to become, perhaps he would have put a greater attempt into communicating. That said, he shouldn't have come off as rude, but just very quiet and perhaps shy.

"The Castle Wardens lead our teachers," by ours, Nephi clearly meant "the squires." "They currently lead the City while we prepare for our eventual roles as Knights."

Nephi believed he would become a Knight, not a single doubt in his mind. He was dedicated to the Guardians, more than he was dedicated to even himself. Most pae would have given in after becoming so ill, but it was not the way Nephi went, and he had persevered.

He always would.

Andrei watched Malek for a moment, curious. "Quiet boy!" stated Andrei, with a snort. "But respectful. Fine then! It is good to see others who feel the call! We may need your assistance later!"

Indeed.

Andrei may have shouted a lot, but that was probably a side effect of being rather tiny. He seemed to be rather serious either way, though, and Nephi appeared to admire him well enough.

"Do you have any questions, pleb?"

Glancing to Nephi, Malek listened carefully to each word that was spoken. Oh, so the wardens train the teachers who train the squires, and they are also the current ruling body? Good to know. In some sense, it was nice to have a solid authority dictating the rules rather than the relative freedom he'd grown up with in the jungle. Only natural considering the lack of society.

Smiling softly up and Andrei as he spoke, he gave another pair of nods before shuffling his pack. If asked for assistance, there would be little hesitation from him.

Okay... If he was asked to, like, talk to people and stuff... Maybe

But actions? No problem.

Yes, he had so very many questions, but without a voice or script to explain it, there was little he could do to ask. Frankly he was still weary from using his powers so much in his earlier encounter. He'd need to work more with Tihsenka on his endurance.

Shaking his head politely, he glanced to Nephi to try and give a silent cue to ask when they would be continuing onward, not that he was in a rush or anything. For the self-made recluse, he just needed a bit of time to himself to adjust to all the new sensations around him.

"I am assuming not! Very well!" The period of silence was enough for Andrei to assume the "pleb" had no questions for him, even if it was just the mutism. "Anything else, Nephi?"

"No sir. Just wanted to show Malek around the City."

"Then get back to studying!" A pause. "After you show the pleb where he can put his things..." With that said, the tiny mellon with loudmouth tendencies turned and went back inside the Castle, leaving Malek and Nephi alone once more.

Nephi motioned to Malek, taking him back in the other direction, swirling back outwards to a quieter area with lots of smaller buildings lining the street. He looked over them carefully, before stopping in front of one and pointing to the door. "This should work for you. It's fairly close to the Castle, too, so you'll be ready when called."

He tilted his head.

"Right, you're from the Isle... You will be happy to find there are many amenities in this apartment you are not terribly used to. For one, water that runs like a river, without the body of water!" Nephi laughed. "The avalon magic is really quite amazing, and the Guardians let us benefit from its bounty."

Another silent head nod was all Malek gave to the mellon before he went away, not sure if he felt entirely accepted or not by the end of it. Glancing to Nephi, he couldn't help but wonder if he was being a nuisance at this point, or if there had been a reason that such a angel happened upon him in these crucial first moments. He smiled, wondering if it was the Guardians' doing. This quest had started for such a selfish reason, but now... Now it felt like he truly had come to believe in these beings and their wisdom.

How strange. How wonderful.

The shetani was quick to follow as they continued away, his eyes looking around to try and take everything in. He was thankful to have been born with a sharper than average memory, as it really aided in his power. If anything, he wanted to make sure that he'd be able to get back here easily and preferably without asking for directions.

Really, he was relieved when they came to the entrance of a housing unit not too far away. Or... was that really a place he could live? It looked so very different from anything he'd been used to. Looking back at Nephi, he nearly audibly sighed before smiling in gratitude. The young adult was practically beaming. He didn't even flinch at the thought of these strange magics; really, water that came from sources other than a river? As if such a luxury could exist. If it were true... then perhaps the city truly was paradise.

Looking back at the door, then to the squire, then to the door once more, he took a few hesitant steps forwards before moving to open it and let himself in. Stopping at the front of the door, he turned to look back at Nephi before dropping his stuff and walking back. He held out his hand to shake his in gratitude before smiling once more, returning to the door, and waving goodbye as he entered.

And so began his life in the city.

What strange encounters will our protagonist face? How will he react to the luxuries of modern society?

Stay tuned to find out next time!
