As she followed the larger mare, Duga tried to imagine a world where every song was exactly the same as the last. A world where there were no complimenting tunes, because there were no deviations. The same cords over and over, with no break, no change, unending. She shuddered without thinking about it. “Ugh. Yes, I can see how that would be… unpleasant,” she murmured. “I mean, sure, there might be fewer fights and violence, but I can’t imagine that there would be a whole lot of love or affection. Or… maybe there would be. If everyone was the same, there would be no reason not to love one another.”

“Assuming everyone is a good person,” Idris corrected. “If everyone is a selfish, violent creature, then the world would be much worse than it already is.” She stopped as her own words sank in. “Not that I think the world is this horrible place,” she clarified. “Just that it wouldn’t be some kind of utopia just because everyone was exactly the same. Maybe everyone would be just as miserable as everyone else.”

“That’s true,” Duga murmured, thoughtfully. She didn’t say anything for a few moments as they picked their way through the shrubbery. “If it was the perfect world, everyone would be happy because everyone was the same, or everyone would be miserable for the same reason. You’re right, though. It would be boring. Maybe no one would notice or care, but that isn’t the world we live in. Everyone is different. Even two songs that sound almost exactly the same have small chords here and there that change the tune. It might be just a little different, but it is different. That’s what makes the world so much…. Fun.”

Fun was the right word for it, Idris decided. She nodded a bit to agree with Duga. “You’re right,” she said with a smile. “It’s all theoretical, anyway. That’s what makes traveling so much fun. Though, I suppose it might be different if you don’t have a home to go to. I have my family, my flock. What about you?”

“No family to speak of,” Duga answered with a small shrug. “I imagine I have parents out there somewhere. Maybe even brothers or sisters, but none that I knew. I came out of my basket alone. I don’t miss them, though. Can’t miss what you’ve never had. I don’t have a home yet, either. Please don’t apologize or pity me, though.” Those with homes and families always seemed to pity her, as if she WANTED what they had. It was rather annoying, in her opinion, but that didn’t stop the way it was. “I haven’t found anywhere or anyone that I felt comfortable enough to consider a home. Maybe one day I will, but until then, I rather enjoy traveling too much to settle down.” There, maybe that would keep the mare from pitying her for something she didn’t really care about. She didn’t need a home or family, and she didn’t miss it.

“I can understand that,” Idris said with a small smile. She noticed the light brightening a bit, and the air felt a little… fresher. They must be nearing a meadow. “I have a home and family, but I still love the journey and meeting people. You can have different motives for the same actions.”

Duga paused to stare at Idris. “You’re… different. Not many would be so… understanding.” Not only that, she realized, Idris had also shown a high tolerance for the differences in others. It wasn’t that Duga expected people to try and force their ways onto her. It was just that experience had taught her that such a thing happened more often than not.

Idris shrugged. “It’s not a matter of understanding, I think, so much as it’s none of my business. You live the way that makes you happy. I’d hardly be grateful if someone told me that I had to give up something I loved just because someone else thought they knew better… I see sky!” she chirped.

Duga blinked and realized that Idris was right. It had gotten much brighter and they seemed to have left the trees. More than that, she recognized the road that wasn’t too far off. “I guess I wasn’t as far off path as I had originally thought,” she murmured. “Well, Idris, it was a pleasure meeting you. I imagine now that we’re back in the open, you’re going to want to hit the skies?” In Idris’ situation, Duga would have. Not that she was trying to get rid of the larger mare, but she imagined that the call of the sky was getting to Idris.

Idris smiled sheepishly. “If you don’t mind,” she said. “I don’t mean to take off. I have enjoyed our conversation, but…” She trailed off, looking up at the sky. She’d exercised both her mind and legs enough. It was time to return to the skies that she loved so much.

“I don’t mind at all,” Duga chuckled. “Go. If we meet again, I would love to continue our conversation. Or maybe even start another. But I can see that you’re antsy to get back to where you’re happiest, and I can hear a tune down the path that I want to hear more clearly. Safe flight, Idris,” she finished with a warm smile. She meant what she had said. Idris had a lovely melody, and an interesting mind. Duga wouldn’t have been the least opposed to conversing with her again someday.

“Until next time,” Idris agreed before launching herself into the sky, happy to feel the feathers through her wings. And as the mini started to meander on her own way, Idris thought she could hear a faint song on the wind.

Fin.
