Alder couldn't help but gape at his mother when he finally fit together the pieces. There was no way...
"Does Jack not know that Dad is dead?" he whispered, trying not to believe it. "Does Jack think everything is fine and dandy here?"

She turned her misty eyes towards Alder.
"He does," she sniffled. "I couldn't let him know, Alder. It would break him. You know it would. I told him Anchor had come back from the war and had gone off on another quick mission when Jack had stopped by," she was crying now, remembering how hard it had been to lie to her son. "That he missed his son and would be sad that he hadn't been there. That we'd visit him in the desert, together, as a family, soon."
