Her words hung in the air, the atmosphere tainted with a heavy silence. Her surroundings were so devoid of sound, she could hear the stranger’s every breath. Her ears filtered out everything else, trying to focus entirely on the stallion. It was hard. Fuzziness still clung to her, and the odour of fresh meat tickled her nauseated stomach. Hunger still ripped through her, but it was layered over with that horrible sickness. She knew if she touched the flesh again, the heaving would probably kill her. She couldn’t take that again. And then the ‘walker spoke and Bear felt a new wave of fear sweep through her.

Abject humiliation welled up deep within. His words were true. She had fallen into his trap. She was weak. She was pathetic. Her claws gripped the soil tightly, scoring shallow gauges into it. She hadn’t the strength left to do any more damage. As it was she could barely stand there, the strength was sapping away from her bones. It was like a large emptiness, swallowing up her mind, pulling her downwards into oblivion. She wanted to sink away. The hunger, the clawing pain, the dizziness. It was all too much. She had failed as a ‘walker. She had fallen into a trap. How stupid could she get?

The next thing she knew she was on the ground. Her knees buckled under the huge weight of the stallion. Bear was by no means a small girl, but she was yet a foal and had a long way to go to grow into her full stature. She crumpled easily to his grasp, an involuntary yelp escaping her as she smacked into the cold earth. And then she felt his claws. Lines of burning fire sprung up across her flank, scoring deep into her flesh. An inhuman shriek escaped her lungs. Never in her life had she experienced this level of pain. This level of torture. Lash after lash came hard and fast. Blood raced to the wounds. Fire. Burning. Agony. Not even hell could hurt this much. Her screams died down to whimpers, unable to summon the breath against his unrelenting assault. This was it. This was how she would die.

His laugh echoed around them, complimented by the ripping of her flesh. She couldn’t take it. She would go insane. Pathetic whimper after whimper bubbled out of her. Tears flooded down her cheeks. Her claws bled from where they gripped the ground so tightly. And then it all stopped. The wind burned against her open wounds. What was he doing? Was he preparing to kill her? Would this be the end? Bear closed her eyes, giving up to her defeat. There was nothing she could do. She hadn’t the strength to raise her head. Hadn’t the strength to snarl. Hadn’t the strength to do anything but give up and die.

But he wasn’t going to kill her. A flicker of hope rose up within her. And then everything turned red. Agony like she had never experienced erupted within her paw. She could feel the bones crunch. The joints pop. Bile chocked up her throat as her body violently rejected the sensation. Pain spasmed up and down her body. She couldn’t breath. She couldn’t see. Her entire body convulsed. Thousands of daggers stabbed into her leg all at once. Fire. Ice. Pain. There was nothing but the pain. White hot pain. Her eyes rolled up into her skull as she passed out, unable to face the reality of what was happening.

But even the blackness was tainted with red.
