She had a General-Queen scold you.

Failure is always punished.

In a sense, it irked him greatly that he extrapolated motivations so far beyond the beaten path - so far beyond the truth. At that moment he shied from her touch, jerking back just slightly and angling his visage away from the broken doll in human uniform. It was a slap on the wrist, I know, for my transgressions. I knew it compared to my own earlier misfortunes - in demotion to the form of Lieutenant. And here, Quenton would tell me, not to be fooled by the creature of greatest model in Metallia's eyes - to see this fanatical devotion and not be drawn to it as I was with him. What am I but lovestruck on both accounts? It's a rotten story - one that long lost its flavor to the maggots that yet give it life.

The answers are simple: my goals are impossible without ascending to an aspect. True chaos cannot be understood or conceived in the human mind - everything I've done, everything I've tried to do, may as well be moot up until this point. It's an answer I need to face now. And Order has, thus far, offered me no method of fruitful purification - and if it did, it may kill me or wrench from me all the memories that drive my want for it. I may foster an intrinsic pull toward Chaos when on the other side, and only further cripple myself with a starseed so irrevocably damaged. There's no promise of a happy ending anywhere. Would I even want one, if I could find it?

As it is, there are a few knowns to my existence - that I am half monster, that I am of Chaos power, that I am veritably chained to Metallia's will. That I find great pleasure and stock in Quenton's existence. I could bring him to the side of Chaos, and such a feat would silence the most convincing voice toward abandoning all for the side beyond.

There are no guarantees anymore. There is no happiness.

She entrusted him with a starseed, simple and pure, and his gaze drew to the humming gem in his palm. He knew already the great boons within it, a moral question almost taking form in his mind before he bit into the surface to produce such a grand flood of power through his body that his pupils dilated, that he knew a high a thousand times greater than morphine could ever provide. He knew, in that moment, that the natural teasings of excitement provided by Quenton's presence paled to nothing more than a speck.

This was power, and he possessed the methods to introduce Quenton to it.

He never knew both parts of the equation - never had all the information, anyway. He will see, like I do. Finally his gaze met hers in a display equally devious, though his mouth sat tempered in reservation. "She wants ze Ears', yes, but what of its denizens? Of ze men and women we use for cattle, for corruption, and for enemy? Surely she wants zem alif'e - but is she so privy to zeir preservation as ze Negaverse? For a long stretch of time, even wrenching starseeds from ze lot of zem stood as a grievous offense in ze eyes of ze Negaverse.

"If zey are free game, as any, zen zere is a lot more freedom to act as intended." He stood afterward, retrieving his mask from her to cement to face once more. The familiar bone sockets stood out against his peripheral vision, as morbid reminder to the wake of his reputation. And if any of the Negaverse seek to defy me for it, then I will need to know in greater detail the origins of this war - I need to tailor it to fit my motives, even if I have to lie. But the greater amount of truths I can bend, the more convincing I become.

"Tell me, Alkaid, of ze start of zis war. What do you know of it?"

It was true, she had to admit, at some point the Negaverse had taken a strange turn of opinion. Where once there had been blood shed and sacrifice, there had been implemented a sense of family and loyalty to the individual citizen that she had not been taught at her induction. If the purse of her lips was any indication, she did not like the way such words tasted on the tongue.

"That stretch of time baffles me and I admit, I spent most of it prowling the darkness and questioning my place among these ranks. Not unlike you, I suppose. My home was not here, then, but on my own world - light years away from the Sol system and our leaders." To many, it was perhaps seen as avoiding her duty but Alkaid had no ability to feel guilt or shame over such. She had not known what purpose she served and thus, had served none. She had always assumed Metallia would come for her if she was needed.

She had found her own way back, finally, and now she stood here to bring another of Metallia's creations back to the path of servitude.

"I live by the knowledge that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. If I must devour a hundred starseeds to save a million, so be it." Of course, she also loved the taste of power, much like the fervor she'd seen pass through the half-youma as he consumed her gift. As he stood, she moved back and away from him. Her gaze drifted up to lock his and a smile bloomed over her lips as realization spread through her. She was winning this, slowly but surely, and she was pleased with even the small first taste of triumph.

"This war goes back to a time our world has forgotten almost entirely, when Senshi lived on their home worlds and Earth was ruled by a prince, named Endymion. He was loved, as was his betrothed, Beryl." She turned away from him and started to cross the carpeted room, to a bookshelf that stood lonely and forgotten in a corner of the room. "But he betrayed her and fell in love with the treacherous moon princess, Serenity. She was also known as the pure heir of the moon kingdom, Sailor Moon. Beryl was outraged and fearful for what might become of her home land if Serenity became queen of not just the Moon Kingdom, but Earth as well."

As she spun the tale she had learned so well from her predecessors and the images played back to her from the vault of memories in Elysion, Alkaid's finger rose to cross the brims of a dozen forgotten books. She paused over one and pulled it down from the shelf: a gilded binder with no other distinguishing features. Her fingers flipped through page after page, but her story trailed on.

"Metallia answered her need by giving her the power that runs in the veins of every Negaverse agent, every youma, every soldier we have in our army. Prince Endymion deserted his people and pledged himself to his lover, and when she had him securely in her pocket, she sent the forces of her allies to rain war down upon this Earth. They wiped out the kingdom here so entirely that no one even remembers it ever existed." She stepped toward him again, still slowly flipping through the book. As she approached, it became evident that she was looking at a half-filled photo album, though none of the pictures had satisfied her yet. "I don't know how, but Metallia was the saving grace of the Earth Kingdom. All of the senshi worlds were destroyed, one by one, just as the kingdom of Earth was. It was sweet revenge and for a time the Earth knew peace without senshi, until we were all born again here, on the last planet that could sustain life."

At long last, she stopped on a page that displayed a single picture. A woman with a pool of orange hair, clinging to a man with lilac dreads, sunglasses, and a face that said get the camera away from me this instant, and an out of place teenager that looked like he would rather be anywhere but taking that photo. Not that she could argue with him, as someone had forced both dreadheaded men into awful Christmas sweaters. She held it out for Bischofite. If he had ever been on a tour of Negaspace, he probably already recognized two of the three people there.

"When we were awakened, Metallia was prepared to fight us back once more. Charonite, that man, was a ruthless, loyal leader that performed her will without question. He filled her ranks, brought Beryl to life once more, and set out to eliminate every Senshi that threatened the Earth and Metallia's everlasting protection - at any cost. He was the man that brought me to this side of the war." She moved now to perch carefully on the couch arm, tucking one ankle behind the other and letting him soak up the tale of the Earth as she knew it, wondering if it really made much of a difference to him. "Few of our leaders have come close to being able to fill his shoes."

"It sounds like a shitty soap opera, frankly." So little of it held bearing on him; were they intended to relive this search for vengeance from a thousand years past? Was his sole purpose in this war simply acting as a tool to reclaim what was lost to these youth from beyond the stars? I will not settle for such a fate. My place is not the pantomimes of those who came before me - for I was ostensibly some knight that perished in that pointless war. No, it's time to forsake the past, to burn away what remnants of it fetter our actions.

We make our own paths from here on.

"Ze past offers nossing for me. What came before was a mess of politics, bent to war over fruitless emotions. As ze Americans say it, it was a <********>." The word proved somewhat difficult to surmount in his diction. "We need not simply fight for reclamation when we can set our sights higher. Total control over ze Ears' seems a paltry aim for one such as Metallia - assuming zat is her ultimate goal. Perhaps it fits ze state of her soldiers." Bischofite ran claws atop one another in an absent inspection before Alkaid demonstrated a rather unimpressive photo of some of the first to found the Negaverse. "You see, Alkaid, our ranks are loaded wis' witless officers who allow zeir emotions to so often influence zeir decisions. It is somesing I discovered quite quickly in climbing ze ranks.

"However, zey are loyal - but I am not so. I do not adhere to rules zat I do not understand, nor do I follow orders I do not agree wis'. And as you'f already mentioned for me, our leaders currently are s**t. Laurelite I'f met but twice now, bos' times to assert her will over me. And beyond zat? I doubt she ever leaves her office. Zinkenite offers ze same nugatory rule over ze ranks - ze only sing he cares about is asserting dominance to protect his overinflated ego. And zese are ze people who are supposedly ze speakers for Metallia... I wager we'f long strayed from her word due to corrupt influence. And Howlite? Vanished.

"Consider zis, Alkaid - what if zose who rose to zese ranks are now utilizing zeir positions for zeir own gains? Metallia herself owns no corporeal existence in zis world, so she may lack ze means to override zeir petulant, human desires for power and influence. Perhaps zey deliberately gutted ze Negaverse and replaced what loyal soldiers zey could wis' zose eager to lick boots or preserf' zeir families so zey could play zeir own tawdry war games? What if our Negaverse as we know it is founded only for settling personal vendettas?" He reached into the photo album without consent, plucking out the sole photograph of those ordained as the ones who came first.

Afterward he held it toward her, clawed fingers covering the heads of those pictured. "What if zese great leaders disappeared because ze more underhanded and devious took zeir places? Our military is a snake whose head was cut off long ago, Alkaid, and ze body will twitch and jerk for anysing zat provides it ze impetus to do so.

"And maybe, just maybe, Metallia is not strong enough to delivers us ze trus'." He let the words linger, heavy in the air as ozone just after a lightning strike. As the humid taint from rain too forceful the night prior.

Finally he handed the photograph back to her, rounding from the ottoman to peer over her shoulder before she shut the book. "Sanks for ze bedtime stories, Alkaid, but I sink I'll pass on ze moral behind ze fable. I'f never been one for morals, anyway."

Alkaid watched him with rapt admiration as he began to speak. She fell to silence and let his peculiar accent fill the silent apartment, studying him as he looked down at an all-too-human scene in the photo she knew had to be, by now, years old. Inwardly she was praising him, the longer he spoke and the more he shared, mostly for arriving at the conclusions on his own but partially because this was the most involved he had been since she had pulled him out of the alley earlier in the night.

When he passed the photo back to her and rounded behind her to watch her close the book with a 'thud', she was smiling. It wasn't a mimic of whatever human emotion she thought suited the situation, but a true representation of her pride in a kindred spirit.

"That's just it, Bischofite, you've already arrived at the moral of this story all by yourself." She let the photo album slide from her lap and onto the cushion of the couch at her side, turning partially where she sat poised on the arm. It was just enough to look at him over her shoulder, connecting bright eyes to ones that stared back just as intently from the holes of a bone mask. "You'll find that great leader encased in crystal at headquarters, right beside his beautiful wife, for treason. They're all human. They're all capable of succumbing to corruption."

She shrugged then and looked away from him, staring out at the apartment around her. The couch, the decorations, the door to a bedroom with a queen-sized bed. It was all trivial, meaningless human nonsense. "My loyalty is to Metallia, to her power and the power that keeps me alive. There is a sense of survival instinct when faced by those more powerful than yourself, but I think you are right. She needs the power to make her will known."

She slid down and off of the arm, landing back on her feet near the half-youma. "Do you like waffles?"

The corner of Bischofite's mouth twitched just visibly enough to hint toward his derision, yet never bloomed to a full snarl as he might've worn some months ago. "Zen why station zem in any sort of power, Alkaid? Why grant zem ze highest accolades of ze Negaverse when monsters are better suited to ze part? Why not you instead of Laurelite? Me instead of Zinkenite? Or is awarding zese positions ze only messod she has to continue her survival? While she may push and punish zose of us beneas', for one capable of vast command, she risks cutting off her nose to spite her face - ze may strangle her dry wis' a dears' of energy."

Powerplays, he thought. The Negaverse behaves more and more like a tenuous chess game, the power stacked so precariously across the board that any legitimate move may lead to disaster. We need upheaval, before stagnation ends the lot of our struggles.

I am wary of what that task entails.

"You should take me to see zem sometime. We'll bring some popcorn, perhaps a couple beers - we'll tuck a starseed in ze neck of ze bottle to give you some aus'enticity in ze display. We'll make a show of it, Alkaid." He spoke in jest, though dryly. His gesticulations paired a flippant display, hip jaunted out absently while he displayed the birdlike and borderline ludicrous demeanor adopted by his former youma.

Returning to more serious concerns, Bischofite occupied himself with picking at the skin overlaying her shoulder while he spoke. The dark talons dug into the false epidermis as best he could manage. "Zere are more zan a few instances over human history of false prophets and zeir ends. I wonder... If humans proof' a necessity among her army due to ze element of Chaos intrinsic in ze human heart and mind. I wonder if, by possession alone, we are ze reason she grows and srives."

Her final question took him by surprise, though not unwelcome. It afforded a misty morning memory during the brightest times of his life. "English pancakes, if you could. Wis' lemon juice, and lots of sugar."

Alkaid's shoulders rose and fell in a small shrug at his question. She had no idea why certain soldiers had been promoted over others, or why those still bound to human needs and wills had been chosen at all. His guess was as good as hers, though she was sure nothing Metallia did was without reason.

Her gaze fell to her shoulder as he theorized, listening to his words but concentrated on what she suspected was one more curiosity about her condition. The skin peeled away like the dead cells left by a sunburn, flaky thin layers that gave way with relative ease. When he finally breached a point all the way to her true skin, the talons were met by the harder, stone-like flesh. It released a trickle of chaos energy through the broken point of glamour, detectable at close range but nothing that could be felt outside of the apartment.

"I don't know why she does anything that she does, her whims are beyond even my scope of perception. Perhaps she does gain something from the humans that draw on her power, or maybe it is as simple as needing a leader that all of the human masses can relate to. Maybe it's all just show to inspire them to do their best." The smile that she so often wore, her mask, surfaced again and she tilted her head as she gazed up at him. She seemed to be considering him, again, but this time there was a much more positive air to her inspection. Bischofite was, perhaps, not as lost a cause as he had first appeared.

"English pancakes it is." As she swept past him and headed for the open archway of the kitchen, a single hand rose to touch his arm, then fell away gently. "I haven't cooked in a while, just so you know." She disappeared through the doorway and a light flickered on after, illuminating the dimmer living room where she had left Bischofite behind.

Folly is possessed of all creatures, grand or small. There are no gods for us now. How can we know that Metallia would never make an incorrect choice in her mouthpieces? I am loathe to share this doubt with her, but I cannot be made to believe that Metallia stands so far above us in terms of decision making. Youma are no longer human, but even they make mistakes - and suffer death for it. If Metallia enacted the perfect plan, we would never have senshi crawling about this insipid rock.

There's so much swirling about me to nurse uncertainty... In the White Moon, in the Dark Kingdom, in myself. It seems no matter which path I take, both demand a measure of faith, of trust.

Qualities that I have lacked for so many years of my wretched life.

"I'f eaten garbage before, Alkaid. It can't possibly be worse." He looked toward his arm where fingers graced his skin, half expecting some manner of energy residue lingering. He found nothing of the sort, but it didn't stop him from scrutinizing the strange quality of skin that adorned his flesh. "You could drown a pile of maggots in sugar and zey will come out just as sweet as spoonfuls. Truly, you cannot go wrong."

We shall see how far her influence grows - if she is vast and limitless across the galaxy, or if her power wanes beyond the earth itself. I must attempt that experiment no matter the choice I decide upon. Any information gleaned about Metallia would benefit me on this side or the next.

As for Alkaid... I must visit her planet as well. I want to know the gaping sore that would act as her inevitable death. How brilliant are the strokes that would silence you, creature? Are they as bright as your eyes, I wonder?

Finally the winged general swept after her, wings ducking close to his form out of habit while he passed under the arch. She would explore cooking again soon, and he fully intended to act a pest during the process.

He missed the old apartment.
