Planning the Adventure

The image of his sister's tears stayed in his mind all the way out of Jauhar. He knew how upset she was, she really didn't want him to leave. All through his packing she'd watch him with that pout on her face that was hard to resist. But this was something he wanted to do. He remembered the start of the war when he was little and in the camps. There was fear and pain and anger. That war also did something though, it brought them together to fight a common enemy. Now, maybe they weren't all enemies but the fact of the matter was they had been invaded. Knowing that and all the history behind the actual war and of Oba, it was something that Kres wanted to see ever since then. Sure he might have seen some not so great things when his mother volunteered to go scout out the camp but it was worth it. His Momma had gotten the captives out and home safely, well, most of them were safe. Even Rayolun had been captured and Momma had saved him. The captives had also had a plan and took captives of their own! It was all a very interesting ordeal and it was why he wanted to go despite that adorable look his little sister's face he still wanted to go.

Kresimir had gotten news from his parents that they would be heading to Oba with Vepkhia anyway so the little one wouldn't be so far away after all. He hoped that would help her not be so unhappy. His little sister meant the world to him and it was why he still thought about her little unhappy face as he traveled. He would bring her back something, the only question was what? He knew she liked flowers and pretty things. Heck, she really liked everything which would be what made it super difficult. Maybe he'd bring her back some small trinket. Maybe a necklace or some jewelry...what did the younger kids like anyway? He smiled to at his feet as he continued on his journey. He'd bring her something back, no matter what it was, he'd bring something for his Momma and Seze too! His brothers he wasn't too worried about, if he got them anything they'd probably be happy. Girls, however, were pickier!

Nevertheless, he'd find them something for them and hopefully something for himself as well. He wanted adventure! He wanted stories and to see great things! Why choose Oba, one might ask him, but his answer would be very simple. He had been intrigued by them when he was little and so that’s why it’s the first place for him to visit! Matori and possibly that new strange place Yael were both on his list. And then maybe he’d travel to the other countries as well but these three held the most interest for him because they were new! There was one problem, though, he didn’t know much about Oba to start with. Where should he go first? What should he be careful of? There were lots of things he should probably know before starting a trip of that length since he knew he wanted to go to the Oban capital at least. It was during these thoughts that he knew what he should do, he should go back and visit Neued! He had heard it had become a multi-cultural village. So hopefully there would be some Obans there willing to give him advice. It would be a start, at least.

The people of Neued were friendly enough, most who lived there were either okay with relations among all the different races or just ignored the ones they didn’t like. It was a large melting pot, so to say, as it had grown with trade since he had last been there. This is crazy, he thought to himself as he walked the streets, this is crazy how much it has grown since the war. But it made sense really, new people to trade with new goods more money. Kres thought about stopping in the market to ask questions but he thought that might be kind of rude; taking up the time of the merchants just with questions when they could be selling something to a customer. He’d come back to the market to buy things for his trip, later. For now, he decided the Inn was likely the best place to start. They’d see the most travelers and would hopefully know the best places to go in Oba if only by having people talk about it when they arrive.

Kres entered the restaurant portion of the Inn and went up to the bar. ”Excuse me, Ma’am. I’m planning a trip to Oba, could you recommend any places of interest I should visit?”

”Well, there was this place...Oh dear me I forget the name. The Oban over there, Mibec, go talk to him. Tell him Yomi sent you.”

Kres looked to the man the Innkeep had pointed to, he looked to be an older man, definitely older than his parents. His clothes seemed to be a mix of styles, not limited to just one and it made for an interesting ensemble. Maybe it was to keep prying eyes off of the scars that laced his arms. Mibec was a battle hardened warrior, or had at least seen a rough life. The man didn’t seem to be busy at the moment, there was a plate of half eaten food in front of him but he wasn’t eating it, which almost concerned Kres a little.

”Excuse me, Mister…Mibec?” Kres waited for a minute, the man’s eyes barely left the table. That was enough encouragement to tell Kres he was at least listening. ”Mrs. Yomi said you could tell me some good places to visit in Oba. I’m planning a trip there and I’d like to know where would be a good place to start.” His voice was polite as he waited just to the side of Mibec’s table.

It was finally now that the older man looked up at him. His face seemed unamused, almost bothered by Kres interrupting whatever it was he had been doing. He eyed Kres, sizing him up. Apparently pleased by this, or Kres at least passed his inspection, he cleared his throat. ”Planin’a trip to Oba are ya? Ya came to the right person. Follow me.” He stood then, and walked right out of the inn which surprised Kres. Surely they could have just spoke right there? He looked to the innkeep Mrs. Yomi who gave him an encouraging nod and smile, almost as if she knew he would do that. Which didn’t make him feel any better about following, but he did.

Yer a protector, Kressy
Class Choice Solo

Kresimir followed the man outside the inn and around back, which didn’t exactly add to the vote of confidence in the man’s, well, non-psychopath look. Mibec opened the door to a little building at the back of the inn, one might think it was used for storage or something but that definitely wasn’t the case. As Kres stepped into the dimly lit little shack, the walls were lined with all kinds of weapons. It was almost as if it was a stash for an army or something. Knowing they were in Neued, maybe it had been and this man found them and decided to keep everything. That likely wasn’t too far from the truth or too farfetched. Mibec walked over to one of the walls and opened a small window that let in enough light to be able to see everything more clearly. ”Do ya know how to use a weapon?”? He gestured at the various weapons lining the wall. Still not a vote of confidence in him and it was beginning to make Kres just a little bit nervous. He shook his head, and resisted the urge to step backwards towards the door. ”Do ya know how to protect yourself?” Still not helping, Kresimir thought as he shook his head once more in response to the question. Mibec sighed, as if disappointed and turned his back on Kres for a moment and started walking towards the far back of the little shack that actually seemed a little bigger on the inside.

Unsure as to if he was supposed to follow or not, Kres decided to stay put. Which seemed to be the best answer as the oban returned rather quickly with a document rolled up in his hand. He moved some of the smaller weapons, knives and arrows and such, off of one of the benches and opened the document. It was a map of Oba with bits of Tendaji penciled in by hand after the creation of the Oban map it seemed. ”We’re here.” Mibec said promptly as if he was beginning a war meeting. ”The best places to visit in Oba are Tivrod, Jatine, and the capital Sulburi. Tivrod is closest to us which means they’re friendlier towards your kind. Jatine has turned into a rather tourist attraction. Everyone wanting to see the fresh water springs and oasis feel of Jatine. Ya should be fine blending in there. Sulburi is different. They will not treat ya as kindly there. The king may have changed but many still hold grudges. As it being the capital and such, it holds many fine things to see if ya wish to know about Oban culture.” He stopped and seemed to give Kresimir a once over again. Kres wondered what he was thinking about but he did have to agree that the route that Mibec had laid out did seem like a good one. And after that he could probably travel into Matori with little problems. His gaze turned back onto Mibec who seemed to be looking around the shack for something rather important. His left pointer finger was extended as he searched, telling Kres he was likely looking for “just the right one” of something. What he was actually looking for Kres had no clue, maybe he was finally to the “you can’t defend yourself so now you die” part of their conversation that he felt had been building up.

Mibec stopped then and reached into a pile and pulled out a round shield. ”Well if ya can’t fight ya can at least keep from being hit.” Mibec handed him the small round shield which Kresimir took tentatively as Mibec eyed him again. ”Ya have siblings don’t ya?” Kresimir eyed in him surprise. ”Four siblings.” He said specifically. This caused Mibec to smile. ”I thought so. Ya have a protector look about ya. Ya may never have to use this but if ya do…” Mibec’s hand quickly found its way round the hilt of one of the swords as he rushed at Kres and started his swing. Kresimir reactively pulled the shield up and hunkered down. ”But if ya do,” He repeated, his sword stopped just a few inches from the shield. ”Ya raise that shield like one of ya siblings was behind ya.”

Mibec reset himself and put the sword back against the wall. Kresimir too, righted himself and relaxed fractionally. ”Mr. Mibec sir? I only asked for places to visit. Can I ask why you’re doing this? Why you’re helping me to this extent?”

Mibec eyed the boy, as it seemed he did as he chose his words carefully. ”Ya not ready, boy, to go out on ya own. Ya might end up dead in a side street of Sulburi because ya left home without your own safety involved.” He paused. ”My people aren’t perfect. The Gods know we’ve done some horrible things.” There was a look in his eyes that made Kresimir wonder if he’d seen, or maybe even done some horrible things in his lifetime. The look was fleeting, however, as Mibec met his gaze. ”I don’t want ya to be another reason Nerad damns us for all eternity.”

Kresimir stood silently for a few minutes as he thought about Mibec’s words. Perhaps there was more to the Obans than he originally thought. Mibec warned him to be careful of some Obans yet here he was helping him. He supposed it was sort of like the split among the alkidikes. Heck not even all shifters were that great. With a nod, he smiled at the man who was trying to keep him alive, if only for the souls of his people. ”I appreciate all of your help, Mibec. And, I so rudely didn’t introduce myself. I’m Kresimir. You made good points with your route and I think that is the way I’ll travel if it has the approval of such a knowledgeable man.”

This caused Mibec to snort, someone just called him knowledgeable. ”Oi and boy, if ya have time and appreciation of the arts, stop by the Red Amaryllis in Sulburi. If ya going all the way there, that’s a place you can’t miss.”

Kresimir smiled and thanked the Oban as he made his way out of the shack with his shield in hand. The last thing he caught with his glance back was a grin on Mibec’s face as he gave him a last wink. Kresimir thought he might have heard laughter but he was just excited to go to the market and get stuff for his trip. And of course to show off his new shield. Mibec had a point, the shield would likely come in handy when pulling Vallen out of fights or keeping wild beasts from pouncing on Seze. Why hadn’t he thought of it before?

You, Just Got Stoned
Class Quest Solo

Kresimir had been in Sulburi for a few days now and he had to admit already it was quite the culture shock. All the people living so closely together, so compacted. It would have been nice and spacious if things weren’t built so closely together. Quite frankly, Kresimir felt stifled in this environment. Not only from the heat but from the sheer closeness of everything and everyone. People left less space between each other in the alleys or at the markets. It made it a little nerve wracking as he knew it made it all the more easier for thieves to snatch things from people. Mibec was right, though, as even though he hadn’t gone out and about much he still had received some not so nice looks. It made him nervous to say the least. Everything about being in Sulburi had made him nervous which was not really what he was expecting. Well, Kres thought, not all of it has been bad. He had stopped at the place suggested by Mibec, the Red Amaryllis, and although he hadn’t gone inside yet, he definitely already had a good opinion of it. He smiled as he walked down the alley. Itotia, that poor yaelian, had seemed so scared of him but still put up with all of his questions none the less which he was grateful for. He still had yet to go back and make an appointment but as he had planned to stay in Sulburi a bit longer he figured he had plenty of time. Perhaps he ought to get her something for putting up with him so kindly. He’d have to go to the market for that which he supposed was fine. He at least knew his way there from the small place he was renting on the outskirts.

To the market he went, it would be a good chance to find something for all of his family too. Since it was the capital he hoped there would be more of a variety than he had found in the other two cities which he hoped he would be able to find something to fit all of his family members. He was thinking on this all the way to the market. Kres knew he’d have some difficult decisions to make to try and make everyone happy, especially little Veppy. The shifter wasn’t so caught up in his thoughts, though, that he didn’t notice the hand snaking towards his hip. He adjusted his shield accordingly to deflect the thief’s hand. Mibec had warned him of this, of all kinds of criminals and how they would target him for being an outsider. What Kresimir hadn’t exactly been expecting was the thief having friends…Someone bumped into him from behind which caught him off guard making him stumble forward a little. He caught himself but he was definitely in a defensive position.

”What’s wrong there, shifty?” There was a malice in the boy’s voice that set Kresimir on edge. Kres may have called him a boy but he was no older than the thief, or his friends for that matter as a few people separated from the flowing crowd and seemed to redirect people around them. That was something that astonished him, the fact that all these people were just looking the other way and ignoring what was going on or about to be going on here. Was there no sense of community among these people? No, that wasn’t it. Maybe there was but he wasn’t one of them. Did they have no morals then? To stand up for what was right and to squash the criminals? How did these people live in this way? This was more than just the crowded and cramped conditions. This was essentially well-being, safety, and life or death!

There were three around him and who knew how many in the crowd, they couldn’t be Kres’ focus right now. The three had created a sort of triangle around him so he kept turning to try and keep them all in sight but they all adjusted accordingly as well. He didn’t want to give up that weak spot, give up access to his back. He may not have much combat experience but he knew that was almost a cardinal sin among fighters. If you fought in pairs you always watched your partners back and they yours. But he had no partner, he wasn’t even really a fighter. How was he going to get himself out of this one?

”So what’s it going to be Shifty? The hard way? Or the easy way?” The tone of his voice told Kres that no matter which he picked both options would be the same. Someone with that much hate in their voice wouldn’t just let someone go. Kres sighed and undid the purse at his waist and tossed it to the apparent leader.

”Take it. You probably need it more than me anyway.”There was not the usual kindness in Kresimir’s voice. It was flat. It was angry. But he did what he thought he must.

The oban leader smiled like a feral animal, which maybe he was from the way he started to stalk towards him. A blur came from behind him and he flinched but it was a girl who was maybe a little older than him. She found her way to the leader’s arm and intertwined hers with his. ”Oh come on Liy, let this one go.” She almost pouted at him. Were they lovers? It seemed to appear so. ”Not this one Sis. He should be taught to stay where he belongs.” He had a sneer on his face as Kres had been worried about. So siblings and not lovers, what an odd relationship they seemed to have. Then of course his relationship with his siblings probably seemed sort of odd to outsiders too. ”Liy. Leave this one be.” There was no more pout there. Perhaps they were siblings after all. The girl’s body tensed as she waited for her brother’s verdict. The girl’s response only filled his expression with more malice. ”Oh look boys, it seems Cizo has fallen for the shifty.” The sneer on his face made Kres want to punch him as he threw his sister off of him. Kres reached out a hand to help her up but was met with her hand palm forward, telling him she didn’t need his help. Likely him trying to help would only make it worse.

The girl, Cizo, stood up and stood in front of Kres between him and her brother Liy. ”You’ll share his fate then.” The boy Liy jumped to action at his sister and Kres reacted instinctively and jumped towards her as well, putting himself between the attacker and the girl as he raised his shield to try and protect them both as Mibec had told him. ”You fool!” She shouted at him and pushed him to the left out of the way but he had reacted too soon and her too late. The small blade the leader had thrown skimmed his cheek and embedded itself into Cizo’s arm. A small cry accompanied it being pulled from her arm as she drew her own sword, one Kres hadn’t initially noticed. ”GO!” The girl shouted at him but she didn’t know it was in vain. There was no way Kres was going to leave a girl here to fight these boys here by herself, Serin damn him.

Kres stood once more but not to run or leave, he positioned himself at her back. If he couldn’t help her he’d at least try to watch her back. That was the right thing to do, right? Kresimir hunkered down under his simple shield. It may not be his sibling he was protecting, but he would protect her as he would his own since her brother wasn’t acting accordingly. He kept his back as close to hers as he could and pushed back any of the attackers that tried. Kres was less than practiced with his shield but it was just enough to do what needed to be done. He wouldn’t have been able to tell how long it had actually been before the girl tapped on his shoulder as he continued to scan the crowd.

”You’re a fool in more ways than one.” She said, her left arm bloodied from the knife wound. His own face dripped from his own wound yet he had hardly noticed. ”You should have ran when I said. And you most definitely shouldn’t have given him your money. You had to of known it wasn’t going to stop him. And then you wouldn’t have had anything to get medical help after your beating.”

Kresimir had his own small smile now. ”Serin likely would have abandoned me if I had left a girl-er-woman fighting by herself. Besides, I think all that bag will get them is a little…stoned.” He said as his grin grew. He pulled another small bag out that had been inside his waistband. And from that bag, he pulled a number of small unimportant stones from it as if showing her his meaning. After Mibec’s warning, there was no way he was going to leave his valuables out for anyone to try and steal.

His smile was met with a smile of her own and her uninjured arm lifted to ruffle his hair as if he were a child. ”You might not be so foolish afterall. No come on, you can at least buy the girl who saved your butt some lunch now, huh?” Kres smiled and nodded, a small jerk of his head towards the market and the two roughed up kids entered the masses once more.

Growth Description:
-Kresimir comes to shocking revelations that all isn't as hunky-dory as it had been for him growing up. People lived in way worse circumstances and he doesn't quite understand it yet. However, when his protective side shows up, Kresimir realizes that not everyone needs protecting, whether they're young/old, male/female. And sometimes, its himself he needs to worry more about. At least if anything, he still has his sense of humor!

A Moral Dilemma
Class Quest Solo

To say that Kresimir was enjoying his time in Oba would have been an understatement. For starters, it was so incredibly different than where he grew up. It made it to where there was so much to see, do, and experience. Even so, he found himself sticking around one certain area, Sulburi. If someone were to ask him why this was he’d answer simply that the capital of Oba always had the most going on so he was sure to always be entertained. That was part of the reason at least. The other part was that he had found a particular girl, well in all rights a woman, which held his eye for a little longer than well anyone and that wasn’t because she was one of the only Yaeli he’d ever seen in the capital. Of course, he had no way of knowing if she harbored any feelings for him but was content enough to think of themselves as friends. He didn’t always see her very often yet that didn’t keep her off his mind. Some could call him a little boy with a crush…and they’d be correct.

In any case, besides his little crush Kresimir actually enjoyed the city of Sulburi, the culture was just so vast he enjoyed getting to experience all of it. Unfortunately, there were also parts of that culture he didn’t wish to experience. Oba had a long history and if the war had gone any differently, the shifters might have only been added as slaves under the Oban’s control. That was something he couldn’t imagine. To have no will but your masters. To not be able to live a life of your own. To have to answer someone’s every beck and call. To Kresimir, it was something he couldn’t even begin to imagine. He felt for the matori people for all their kind had suffered and even wished he had been old enough to help free them from that evil king’s grasp. He knew things were better now but not all things were perfect. That was something he was going to witness first hand.

The young shifter was adventuring outside his normal radius to take in some new sights. That was how he found himself in a small pub, or at least what seemed like a pub. Perhaps at one time it had been quite the interesting establishment. Since then however, it seemed to be in disrepair. Despite that, there was a small collection of people mingling and enjoying a few drinks. The fact that the majority of them were matori and the curious glances people threw him didn’t escape Kresimir’s attention either. He found himself a seat at a makeshift bar, the stool was a little wobbly but it supported his weight as he ordered one of whatever everyone else was drinking. It was in the quietness as people watching that he heard the muffled bangs and shouting, sounds that caused his brow to crease. They were noises that sounded like someone was in distress: panicking.

His head swiveled around as he tried to locate the source of the muffled noises. Once he saw a door with a Matorian leaning against it nonchalantly, he knew something else was going on. The bar tender, an older matorian woman of small stature set down his drink and slightly shook her head. It was for that reason that he knew he had to intervene in whatever was going on. Kresimir stood, the shield on his back gave him a small measure of comfort. As he approached the man leaning against the door, the noises were noticeably louder and most definitely coming from behind the door. Now, whether it was a being or a beast behind that door the shifter didn’t know. What he did know was that whatever it was shouldn’t be making such noises.

Some of the patrons seemed to sense that trouble was brewing and excused themselves. Glasses without their owners accompanied many a table as the already small group dwindled down to just three others, all of whom seemed to be guarding that door.

”You should just move along shifter.” The one to the right said, his gaze not wavering.

Kres knew he couldn’t though and shook his head ever the slightest bit though he knew they would notice. And they did. The one leaning shrugged and to Kres’ surprise moved out of the way and opened the door. Inside was an Oban who looked to be about the same age as Kres was. He was bound and gagged, a blindfold over his eyes though he registered the sound of the door opening and became very still and quiet. The boy didn’t seem to have any noticeable wounds though from his sudden stillness at the open door told Kres things were likely much much worse.

The leaning man, though he wasn’t leaning anymore, kicked at the oban. A dull thud was heard as the matori’s foot collided with the Oban’s thigh. ”He’s our former master’s son.” He said quite proudly. ”He offered us a ransom but there’s no amount of money or goods that could give us the same feeling of us giving the Obans a taste of their own medicine.”

Kres shook his head. ”I know the Obans wronged your people for a very long time, but this isn’t the way to retaliate.”

”And what do you know? Your people have never suffered an ounce of what we had to go through daily in all of your people’s history. You know nothing.”

Kresimir knew he was right. These people had every right to be angry and hostile to Obans. He knew that if another shifter beat or mistreated his family that he would go to great lengths to protect them. In a way, that’s what these matori men were doing…perhaps not in the correct way. Kres felt himself torn, should he let these men continue this act of violence when they could make a very good case for why they’re doing so? It was a matter of morals and one that he never thought he would have to figure out.

He was about to step back when he saw the smile creep up onto all three of their faces and they started to move towards the small closet and the Oban boy. He made up his mind quickly as he pushed through the trio, and positioned his shield in front of him and the boy. ”No.” He said simply. Kres turned his head slightly backwards towards the boy. ”Can you untie yourself?” He asked. He didn’t hear an answer but heard slight rustling behind him and a few minutes later there was a hesitant hand on his shoulder.

Kresimir’s eyes narrowed at the three men and he tried to look threatening. He reached to his waist and pulled out a few coins from his coin purse. It was a considerable amount, more than they deserved. He threw it at them. ”We’re leaving.” And to his surprise, they parted, two on his left and one on his right. He used his right hand, the free one, to try and keep the boy close to him just in case they decided to try something. And again, to his surprise, they did nothing.

The two managed to make it out of the pub and Kres pulled the boy along with him at a fast walk just in case. After they were a considerable distance away, he took the time to ask the boy a few questions. He was the son of a business owner, though he didn’t expand to say what kind of business it was. And after coaxing out of him the location, Kresimir escorted him home.

Kres refused however, to be invited in. He didn’t save the boy for any kind of reward. In fact, Kres had almost walked away. It was that smile on the leaner’s face that seemed to hold such malice, Kres knew that no matter what had been done to those matori in the past, it wouldn’t justify what they were going to do to this Oban. It made him rethink how he saw the Matori for sure, and he knew he would need to be careful about making blanket assumptions as he had previously been doing. And to always, always, do the right thing. Even if others may be justified in their actions, he cannot use their reasons to justify his own inaction.
