Jasper laughed at the licks, he couldn't be too mad at the animal since Fido was the only one there for him. "Alright alright." he said with a smile as he let go of the collie. "Finish your dinner, dog breath." Jasper mentioned, finishing the next few pieces and tossing the last two slices toward Fido. When their dinner filled their tummies, Jasper curled up next to Fido and fell asleep with ease. The feeling of another body next to him gave him comfort and let him know that everything would be okay.

Fido barked when the last two slices were saved for him and he eagerly gobbled them up. He moved so that Jasper's head could rest on his body like it was a furry pillow. "Sweet dreams, Jasper," he said in a snuffing noise. He found that he himself could not sleep. What was going to happen to Jasper once Fido's gone? There wouldn't be anyone to protect him or provide food for him. Tonight was not the time to worry about that, he decided as he closed his eyes to sleep.

Jasper slept the best he could for being in a cold alley with only a dog to keep him warm. The next morning woke him up with some rain which was not a very welcome guest when you have nothing to shelter you from the elements. He sat up and felt the sky sprinkle on his skin, gently shaking the fuzzy animal next to him. "Fido.....time to wake up buddy." he mumbled softly, today was going to be frustrating. They needed to find a shelter of some sort for the day at least.

Fido woke up with a shake and a sneeze as water chilled his nose. "Morning," he barked tiredly. He looked at the sky with annoyance. Might as well find some shelter. Stretching, the collie licked Jasper's face before tugging on his sleeve so they could quickly move. "Let's go. I wanna get out of this rain." He recalled seeing a place with a relatively large awning. That could be good shelter.

Jasper brushed the dog off his sleeve for a brief moment while he tried to wake up. "Hey....give me a few minutes." he mumbled, taking his time to stand up and stretch. "Alright....time to find a temporary home for now." he said softly as they made their way out of their little hiding spot to find a good shelter which they eventually found but it was under a bridge. It was colder here, the wind blew through the underside of the bridge like a wind tunnel but at least they were out of the rain. "I know it's not ideal bud, but this is where we need to be until it stops raining." although in this area it was really a question of if it would stop raining anytime soon. Oregon wasn't really well known for putting an end to the rain soon.

Fido whimpered as they settled under the bridge, not liking the chilliness. It wasn't too bad, considering that he had fur, but he worried more for Jasper. Nuzzling against the boy, he tried to push him down so he could warm him up. After all, Fido couldn't provide protection against the cold unless his master was lying down. He then remembered that they hadn't had any breakfast yet. "I sure hope this rain stops soon. We need to get something to eat," he barked.

Jasper couldn't help but laugh at Fido's attempt to keep him warm and the barking he heard later. "I wish I knew what you were saying. Would be nice to have an actual conversation with someone." he said softly, massaging his companion's ears a little. He knew they would need food soon but it would be more difficult through all of the rain. With nothing else to warm them up they could easily become too exhausted from the rain and cold. Fido was too old to go through that kind of exhaustion. Jasper already wasn't being careful with Fido, feeding him junk food and not getting the canine on any flea medications. Sometimes he felt like a horrible pet parent.

Fido had to admit that it would be nice if he and Jasper could have a conversation. He sensed some discomfort, maybe even guilt, from his master and proceeded to lick his hand to cheer him up. "What's wrong? You know I'm all ears, whatever that means. You humans have strange expressions," he barked and he licked the hand again. Fido suddenly heard a grumble and began to whimper when he realized it was his stomach. He was hungry, but they couldn't get food.

Jasper had to cover his ears a little at the next few barks but he didn't scold at his dog for speaking. "I know you're hungry boy. We will get food as soon as it stops raining. Until then maybe you should try to sleep a little more. It will help you keep warm." he instructed as he softly stroked Fido's head and scratched his ears. "Maybe when you wake up this whole life will have been a dream." Although that was really just a pipe dream.

Fido whined, but said nothing. He had a feeling Jasper might misunderstand again. Feeling the scratch, he panted happily and his tail wagged uncontrollably. At the mention of a dream, he whined again. "I don't want this to be a dream," he barked softly as he nudged his master's leg.

Jasper gave a sad smile and held his companion for a little longer. Soon the rain stopped and the sun came out once again. "I guess we can look for food now." he said softly, watching as the rain clouds made their way across the sky and cease their threat to rain again. "Come on Fido, lets find something quickly before the rain starts again. Seems like the weather has a mind of its own these days." he said softly, standing up and patting his leg for his faithful companion to follow.

Fido barked and eagerly followed Jasper. He circled his master as they walked, trying to burn off the extra energy that was unusual for a dog his age. Considering the circumstances, he probably needed that energy. "Breakfast time!" he barked when they neared one of their most frequented dumpsters.

Jasper smiled at his companion's excited bark and started to rummage through the dumpster. "Quiet Fido, if the store employees catch us we'll be in trouble!" he said in a soft voice, throwing out of the dumpster some bits of meat, bread, and cheese but it wasn't much. Most of what was being thrown out was moldy and they couldn't afford to go to the hospital or vet.BrokenScreamBox ((Just updating you so far, I am working now and about to start a second job so posts are going to be very limited.))

Fido reduced his excitement to the silent wagging tail. Sniffing at the not-so-moldy scraps of food, he gathered it onto a relatively clean newspaper he found nearby. Might as well save Jasper the effort of picking everything up. All the while, he guarded the pile of food so no one else would steal it from right under their noses. It would have been a waste of Jasper's effort if it was lost.

Jasper hopped out of the dumpster and gave a soft sigh, he hated rummaging through the trash but it was the easiest place to find food. "Thats it for this one Fido. You know the rules, we each get half." he said with a smile, sitting on his knees and going through the pile of food. "Alright, you pick first. I'll make sure nobody else is here." he stated, getting back up and wandering the alley just to be sure they were safe.
