b***h!

Spots erupted across the Sun's vision as America's fist slammed into the side of her head, and it threw her back, made her hesitate, a moment to recover and regain her barrings.

When she lifted her head again her eyes were blazing, and there was nothing human left in that pretty little face. Only rage.

But the other girl was weak. She was slowing down, bleeding, it was almost over. Peyton surged forward again, a tiny fist cocked back and upper body twisted. When she reached her target she swung, all her slight weight thrown into it to drive spiked knuckles into the other girl's stomach. Twisting as that reached their mark. Tearing. Rending.

The pain, brutal and unhesitating, tore through the veil and left America shocked and suddenly aware. "Peyton!" Her voice was a ragged bark. "Stop! You need to stop this is what..." Finally thinking, she brought up Stryker's chain to block the small blonde's bloody frenzy.

Another wave of pain, and America's voice grew small and desperate with it, "Stop, Pey, please this isn't you!"

The name, Her name, made her hesitate, just a second, glowing eyes widening a touch. A flicker of lavender, a hint of recognition, confusion, alarm, then...gone. She blinked, and the glow intensified, lips peeling back from her teeth in a feral snarl that drowned out the other girl's protests.

She struck, and the chain was between them, catching the spikes of her knuckles and holding her off. It would have been ridiculously easy to pull back, to strike again, but all logic was just washed away in wave after wave if blind fury. She pushed on her hand, claiming fractions of inches, but every second those sharpened points were denied the taste of buttermilk flesh it only incensed her further.

Stryker had been ready even before his runes flared, and it only took the barest beginning of America's thought, the slightest implication of will for the weapon to immediately form the fiery bird of their healing charge. It took flight and soared for only a few seconds before slamming down into America, engulfing her in flames.

The pain of burning caught and met that of Peyton's fists and then, for one terrible moment, exceeded it. When they died away, much of the girl's injuries were gone and there was a refreshed clarity in her eyes. But it was fleeting at best, and soon her hand throbbed once more in protests and the feral light still gleamed in Peyton's eyes.

"Peyton I know you're in there, honey." The redhead tried reason once more, because she was a fixer. She saw a problem and she fixed it and this was her friend and battle partner and admitting defeat here would be worse than a few injuries. "Look, see the tattoo?" It was barely visible under the thin sheen of blood. "You got the match because we're nakama, we're partners. We've got each other's back!"

The flash of runes was ignored, but the inferno that followed, that fiery spread of wings as the phoenix soared upward, in a blinding wash of heat, before slamming down into the red headed hunter and engulfing her in flames. Logic knew this was America's charge, not the attack, but the heal, but logic had no place in Peyton's mind at the moment, and she reacted as any frightened animal would.

The blade sunk into America's arm was abandoned as the shorter girl jerked back and away with a high pitched shriek of fear and anger.

The flames died as quickly as they had come, and with them left the heat. She stared at the other girl, glaring, as she tried once again to reason with the monster that was hiding behind glowing eyes. Whatever was there, it was beyond words, but the petite Sun flinched at the mention of the tattoo, head shaking as if to chase of an annoying gnat.

Lips twitched, head tilting gently to one side. A wild animal sizing up it's opposition, then she was moving again, charging forward. If she were capable of rational thought she'd have called Warrick back to her left hand, but she wasn't, and she put all her stock on her right, slamming her fist against America's hip, her side, and finally cocking her arm back with a desire to drive those needling spikes into the blood stained stretch of that pretty tattoo.

There was a brief moment of hope, but it was a fragile, paper thin thing against whatever was driving Peyton. Not too different from how America herself felt against the constant assault because Peyton was strong even normally, but right now...

No wonder she was flagged for promotion, because particular Sun had America filled with a sinking realization that right now she was incredibly outclassed by the blonde's sheer brute force. She had bandages in her pouch and another charge, the explosive one, left. But how much more could she handle?

Body and breath shuttered and froze in shock at the punch to her chest, and then America's freed hands were moving, one to take Peyton's wrist and hold the other girl there for the single, all-important moment, and the other to grasp at the runic pendant. Jaw tight with pain and tense desperation, she choked out the phrase, "Deus ex machina!"

Without the tree to support them, the two collapsed onto the ground in front of the infirmary.

A hand wrapped around her wrist, holding her back, stopping her, trapping her. She cried, out, the angry snarl of a cornered beast as America caught hold of her, snatched at the pendant now hanging free between them and called out something that should have been familiar, but wasn't. There was a flash, and then they were falling. The red head hit the ground first, and Peyton landed on top of her, scrambling up to straddle the other girl's body, free hand snapping back, ready to lash out, to hurt, to damage.

But the white noise was gone. The gleam of the eyes glowing through the trees was gone. The roar in her head was getting louder, breaking through whatever it was that had blocked it out in that jungle. It started as an inarticulate scream, but as she hesitated, as clarity seemed to return with the flinch of delicate features and the flashes of confusion and horror, it faded out into actual words. Warrick's voice, frightened and angry.

<Stop! Stop it now! What the ******** are you doing?!>

Warrick?

Glowing eyes blinked, once, twice, and the red gave way to pale lavender again. At first she looked shocked, as if when the veil lifted she didn't have a clue where she was, or how she'd gotten there. Then she saw America laying beneath her, and the wash of bruises, the angle of her fist and the tension singing through her arm. "What..?"

Fingers loosened, and Warrick disappeared in a flash of red to return to the gold rings that circled her thumbs. "America? What.. Did I," she swallowed, sliding sideways to sit on the grass beside her instead of on top of her. "Did I do all that to you?" Her voice was the smallest it'd ever been for her best friend. A scared, unsure sound as she stared down at the blood on her hands.

<Peyton... It's wasn't... That wasn't you. You couldn't control it.>

Exhaling in deep relief, America turned her head to look at Peyton. She reached out to grasp the other girls in an attempt of reassuring hand holding that likely would have been more effective had it not been her injured one. "You hit like a load of teenie bricks, Pey." With a wincing smile as the infirmary medics took notice of them, "Glad you're back."

Hunters in scrubs surrounded the two, each being ushered to separate examinations. Verbal reports were demanded on what happened, resulting in both of them being ordered to stay in the infirmary overnight for examination. It was less due to their injuries for once, and everything to do with observation and testing to see if whatever had affected them had left traces or was in any way still active.

The next day when Peyton was released, she'd find a new coat waiting in her room.
