"Laney, you're making a scene."

"Laney, please, my dress is getting wrinkled, go ask your father if dinner's ready yet."

"Laney, it's just a movie."

"Laney, we'll only be gone for three weeks."

"Laney, for God's sake."

There was nothing strange about being asked to go away. Nothing strange at all. With the immediacy of someone who was long used to it, Hvergelmir detached herself from Sarras and stepped back. It was okay. She understood.

She wiped her nose with the back of her hand, staring at her feet.

"Sorry. Sorry, I -- sorry. There were two Cosmos knights with us. They -- " She looked down at the floor, covered in faint red footprints that were growing cloudy in her vision. "One of them was -- just a little girl -- "

On 'little girl' her voice rose and cracked. Her face was wet, tears hitting her again, and it didn't feel much different than Degrasse's blood on her skin when she'd died. Hvergelmir gave up any last attempts at communicating, and settled for covering her eyes with her hand and crying again.

sarras, later she will be so sad that you thought of her as a badass once and now you know the truth~

Mistral thought about saying, I'll send them on after you. She didn't think she wanted to go out and… and celebrate… she wanted to stay here, with the dead, in the quiet. Her shoulders slumped minutely, as she thought of the doll that her past self had turned into a killing machine…

"All but one," said Mistral, gray eyes fixed at her knees. "Level Four hasn't come in yet… but I'd be informed if they'd encountered trouble…" She could trust the Code for that much. Couldn't she? Mistral couldn't even meet Falias's eyes as she took the device piece from him, opened the box, and stared at it. Again. So tiny, such a stupidly small thing, but so vital. She wanted to throw it and scream, but she couldn't.

She was supposed to have been better than Raziele. Kinder. But she had been just so mercenary in the end.

Mendel calmed a little at the attention, sitting and flailing his tail back and forth in the ubiquitous dog word for hello friend! But his new friend got up rather sooner than he'd liked… for hugs? That was alright, he supposed, but… His ears slanted back and he bared his teeth at Sarras's aggression, then barked, hackles raised.

"Mendel, hush," Mistral said, her voice decidedly uneven. "Hush, sweetie, it's okay. He's right." She couldn't look up. She studied the small device pieces in her hands, the delicate machining unworn by a thousand years in a tiny space-age metal box. She heard Hvergelmir's voice crack and it was--it was worse than the moment the first rock had crashed into her, worse than anything she could ever imagine. Because Degrasse had been very young. Degrasse had been small and sweet and probably just a high schooler.

She took a deep breath, dried her tears, and said, "He's right. This is my fault. And I am so, so sorry."

This wasn't fair, he told himself. He had every right to be angry. He had every right to want to tear off his shirt and fling it at Mistral, as a souvenir to remember the pages that died retrieving her device. He didn't see Falias deliver the device and truly, he didn't care. As far as he was concerned, he wanted nothing to do with it any longer. Maybe that would have changed once he didn't feel this unwavering hatred pulsing through his veins like marching ants, but at this moment, he had to stop himself from grabbing the device and crushing it within his hands. It wasn't worth it, he told himself... but Hvergelmir was what kept him from acting on those impulses, and now his guilt.

He didn't want to push her away, but it was already too late. She pulled away and only then was it clear that the blood that caked her attire wasn't just carried over from him. The dog was growling at him, but what did he care about some damn stupid dog when he could clearly see Hvergelmir's distress. Now he felt like an a** for trying to push her away, and, ignoring his well justified anger against Mistral, his attention was on his fellow Cosmos knight. "Gel, I'm..."

It was no use. He was still angry, but seeing Hvergelmir openly sob in front of him just killed him. It hurt him, more than it probably should have, and despite having just tried to pull away from her, he tried to offer her his shoulder again, fully expecting her to pull away. Mistral began talking to him, but he had no interest... he cast her side longed glare, catching only a glimpse of her but catching just enough to know that she was... sincere about her apology. That didn't make the deaths non-existent, but it was good to know that she wasn't getting some kind of sick pleasure out of this, or that she didn't care.

"Sorry won't bring them back," he said with a snap. "Sorry won't fix any of this... but I'm sure I don't need to tell you that."

Just as Babylon suspected, the group on level six had been met with an absolute massacre, the details of which he could only barely piece together. On level seven, they'd encountered scientific equipment left to moulder and traps meant to deter would-be looters. Raziele might not have expected Mistral to fall to invading Chaos forces, but she'd armed it as if it were a sure thing. On six, it sounded like there'd been some kind of war machine waiting, and it had done as war machines were wont to do.

But getting up to confront Sarras seemed less than keen. He had no history with the distraught page, no knowledge of the hell he'd just come from, and Hvergelmir had the situation well in hand.

"We'll wait," he said, draping an arm around Mistral's shoulders and holding her a bit closer. "I'll give you a ride over." She was light, and he was strong. And he didn't want to leave her all by herself in this labyrinth.

"You couldn't have known what those traps would be," he sighed, rubbing careful circles on her shoulder. "All the floors we explored together were harmless. And nothing activates on you. You asked for help and we answered the call and none of this was your intention or your fault."

They were victims of poor planning and not enough reconnaissance, but Mistral's condition made it hard to do that. Babylon could only hope this whole fiasco hadn't soured them against everyone's good will forever. Perhaps in time...

But, he sighed, perhaps not.

Niflhel listened, "We also didn't have it as rough as you had or perhaps each person takes things differently, we only lost two where it sounds you've lost much more. However, none of them died in vain." His head tilted and he thought about what the other had said, "Do you think this Mistral actually set those traps or remembered about them had she set them in the past? Do you even think she would've let us go if she'd known what was going to happen?"

He glanced back at the page who was apologizing, "Do you see how broken she is? I'm sure you're feeling the same way inside. And actually the scenery is pretty damn nice." He added as an after thought, "Bad things happen and sometimes it's for a good reason. This is a war and it was perhaps worse when these planets were lost. I'm sure there's a good reason traps this old were still active - if I'm not mistaken they were at least back from our past lives."

He paused, "We couldn't've known that. She probably wasn't aware how aggressive they were if she even knew about them at all. I'm sure had she, Mistral would've made sure that we were all coded in at the start."

He moved over to Hvergelmir who was crying and pulled her towards his side with a sigh. "I really think instead of a celebration Babylon any drinks that're served should be more in the interest to calm everyone's nerves so we can sort this out more logically instead of through anger." The Knight frowned as Hver was crying.

The same Saturn knight from before had not only continued his prattle, but had taken Hvergelmir away from him, and Sarras tried his best to listen to him. He wasn't sure if it was just something that came with all Saturn knights or if his will was simply stronger than his own to be able to say such things to someone who was coated in blood, but Sarras told himself not to attack. He told himself not to retaliate... he already hated Mistral, and he already hated a lot of these knights. He didn't need to create anymore animosity here, he told himself. He curled his fist, but it wouldn't find its way on anyone's face today, even if he felt they deserved it.

The night's solution made him spat, a strained sound, coming from someone who just watched all but one of his team be mercilessly slaughtered before his very eyes. He pointed to Nihfel, being sure to use one finger to do so, if only to add to the insult, before turning away and looking for a rock or soft patch of dirt to sit down on. "People are dead and you're wanting us to sort this out logically? And through alcohol? This Babylon fellow better have some damn good stuff if a few drinks can sort this out."

It was a stupid idea... but damn, he'd go for it. It wasn't as though it would change anything, he told himself... might as well get drunk.

Mimisbrunnr slowly detached herself from Mistral, but she ave the other Mercury Page a reassuring shoulder squeeze when she did. She gave Babylon a quick glance, already certain that she would be accompanying the party going to his city.

"I'll find it some other time," she said, referring to her Wonder. She wasn't particularly prepared to explore a new place after what she'd seen under the surface of Mistral - and a very dark thought had occurred to her, seeing the blood-spattered uniforms of all the other Knights.

Hers was alarmingly stain-repellant.

What might have gone on at Mimisbrunnr, that their uniforms had to be designed that way? (She could hope that it was messy science of a less deadly kind, but unfortunately quite a lot of her hope had died with Cove and Degrasse. She wasn't sure she could take knowing that her Wonder was a house of horrors, too.)

She fixed her gaze, finally, on Sarras, and she took a breath, pulling her mask back up as if to protect herself in a shell of near-anonymity.

"How many did you lose?" She asked, and her voice was gentle, if a little muffled by her uniform. "Drinking a lot won't bring them back, any of them - but neither will attacking each other here."

If anything, it would ensure their sacrifice was wasted. The idea was to improve their communications, to make the Knights more united. Falling apart would ruin any chance of that.

He had it with Mercury knights, to be honest, but he couldn't blame Mimisbrunnr for interjecting. If he had a more clear mind and hadn't just witnessed everything in Level 6, he would have appreciated what she, and even Nihfel were trying to do. But he wasn't able to kid himself. He couldn't just detached himself from what he and Falias had experienced, either mentally or emotionally. Some knight he was...

Still, he held onto his anger. Better anger, he told himself, than sorrow. Like hell any of these people here deserved to see him shed tears. Hvergelmir, perhaps, but she'd be the only one to see such a sight. He glanced up at her from where he sat, tearing off one of his strands and trying in a frail attempt to clean off the blood, though he knew of only one way to get it off of his attire. He couldn't believe that he missed the lavender beneath it...

"Does it matter?" Sarras said, rubbing and rubbing to no effect but it was to keep himself busy so that he didn't lash out physically. He was preening for THEIR sake, he told himself. "Seven. We lost seven. And I won't attack any of you... even if it'd make me feel better, I don't have the strength anymore."

He then let out a sigh, unable to stop the sudden gag as he spat. "Couldn't even take out... a stupid marionette. What chance do I have with the likes of all of you? Don't worry... I ain't attacking no one with these fists or legs."

She could prove him a liar in four words. It was my doll. She could prove him a liar but she didn't, she sat still with her hands full of alien metal, the arcane markings shining at her. The blueprint, she noticed with sudden alarm, gave no legible indication of how the pieces went together; it only showed the images of each part. Had the group around her seemed less hostile, she might have said it, but she was so aware of Sarras's glare, of the great silence of Falias, that she only clutched the pieces tighter to her chest and hoped they didn't notice. "It's my fault," she said, lamely. "I'm so sorry."

A stupid marionette. "It was a doll," she said, and her eyes went wide at the admission. She hadn't intended to say that. She didn't want them to know. The wording sounded too defensive, didn't it? The technicalities weren't important, were they? She added, lamely, "I thought it was just… a toy." They knew she had seen them all, didn't they? She had been watching. Trying to make sure they were ok. But that… that would only prove her poor intentions, to some of them.

To her horror, she started to cry again. "I'm sorry! I can't be anything other than sorry, I can't bring them back, I didn't know!" She missed Mimisbrunnr's warm arm around her shoulders, but didn't know how to ask for it back; she hid her face in Babylon's shoulder and tried to pretend she was somewhere, anywhere else.

Falias had stood in silence as he handed over the device piece, had remained silent as the red-haired page yelled at first Mistral and then a nearby Saturn Knight (Niflhel).

He was angry, and part of that anger was at Mistral, but unlike his red-haired companion he didn't yell but instead just stared at Mistral with those glassy green eyes, his silence an accusation in itself.

And then Mistral had yelled out out a comment about it being a doll.

"A doll?" There was a venomous note to his normally cheerful voice. "That thing was supposed to be a doll!" His mind flashed back to the knights who had died in the room, the stick waving Mercury page, the two Mercury high school pages, to the Pluto page whose wallet and ring sat heavy in his pocket. "A toy?! What the hell were you…"

His voice tailed off at the sound of Mistral's sob, his shoulders slumping as he asked in a dull voice "Why?" There was something almost broken about the question, his voice agonised, his eyes once again wet as he continued "Why did they have to die?" And is this communication device really worth the cost, worth the lives taken as toll?

He thought he heard someone mention something about alcohol and was tempted, was very tempted. After all maybe if he drank enough then he'd finally be able to stop seeing their faces.

Andronicus emerged out onto the plain dripping wet with the device piece in her hand. She took a moment to take in the view. It was gorgeous and almost worth the dirt and water and freezing temperatures. Almost. Would she ever do this sort of thing without proper gear? Nope. Would she want to come back to Mercury anytime soon simply to site see? Perhaps, perhaps not. Probably when she wasn't freezing her buns off. Why'd it have to be so damn cold anyway. Then again, how was Uranus so damn hot. Ugh, nothing made sense scientifically anymore with these planets.

The page of Uranus walked toward the group without much care until she noticed the crying Mistral and the angry eyes and the general depression.

Something had gone wrong. Something had gone wrong on the lower levels. The page looked around, doing a mental headcount. Wait.

She approached Mistral and handed her the last piece. "So. What happened?" she asked her, pointedly. The others would interject, most likely, but Andronicus wanted to hear it from Mistral herself.

Why? Mistral didn't ******** know. Raziele's paranoia? Asimov's fears? Mistral herself knew that the labyrinth would have been safe under its hundreds of feet of snow; it had been wiped off the map, out of existence, perfectly preserved in the darkness for a thousand years. "I don't know," she said to Falias. She had nothing else to say. "I didn't want it to be this way."

She accepted the device piece, opened the box, compared it to her blueprints. It was all there, she thought. Every piece on the paper, and even a few copies of the… of the receiver? She thought it might be a receiver.

The page concentrated for a moment, and then they all vanished into subspace. "They died," said Mistral, dully. "They're all dead. You can yell at me all you want, but it will never bring them back."

Megiddo followed Andronicus up to the lobby, feeling pretty dang good about herself even if she hadn't been the one to figure out the panel. Her good mood was slightly short-lived at Mistral's proclamation that everyone had died, however. There were people covered in blood and that gave pretty good idea of how bad things had been.

Wow, who knew Mistral secretly had a badass wonder? Megiddo sort of wished that she had been on one of the lower levels - she bet that she would have handled things way better and not been a total wuss.

"You know, as awesome as hiking in this dumb weather and being sad with all of you sounds," she said. "I have work in the morning, so have fun and I'll catch you on the flip side. Mistral, call me."

The squire turned on her heels, feeling out her way home, and vanished.

Quote:
Megiddo out.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 28, 2014 9:30 pm

He didn't bother to power down and back up for a fresh uniform this time, though the Squire didn't regret it all that much. He was freezing and wet, sure, but he was almost used to it already. Almost. Ashur followed along and emerged right on Megiddo's tail, and at the sight he gave a low whistle. "Nice view," he said, looking around for Mistral so he could direct the compliment where it was meant to go. The sight of her crying got him to pay attention to the general atmosphere of the relatively large group of knights that had gathered.

Blood, tears, anger, sadness -- the air was thick with it. Apparently he'd missed quite a bit, and when Mistral announced the deaths any thoughts of being cold and wet left him. He thought they had it bad? People died elsewhere in the labyrinth. Ashur looked on, from Mistral to the others around, even managed a quick wave goodbye to Megiddo who left seemingly without a care in the world about what had happened down there, but he said nothing.

There was nothing to say, really. Mistral was right -- nothing would bring them back anyway. Not a single tear or angry word would do any of those that were lost any good; they were gone, and that was all there was to it. He could express his confusion, concern, even anger if he had any (should he have been angry?), but it wouldn't change a thing. So he kept quiet...

Buyan had followed the others out of the maze bouncing along. She was wet and cold from that water, even though she'd tried to dry off prior but it was okay she was okay and so was her team. “We should team up again sometime; I bet we’d do fairly well for ourselves and see what we can learn from each other. What do you guys thin—“ well she was chatty until she heard the words . . . They died, coming from Mistral’s mouth. The Neptune page froze and lofted a brow seeming confused at first and actually voicing it a little unsure if she really heard what was being said correctly. "Died, as in died died. Not like Movie Di.... wow that's horrible." She looked shocked as the realization dawned on her like a sack of bricks.

The page was looking at everyone else and their uniforms it appeared the ones that had not powered down were still sporting spoils of war. Apparently what the lower levels had been were a lot more dangerous than the level they got and cold water seemed to be worse of that particular level. "Remind me never to look a gift horse with cold water in the mouth again." The page murmured under her breath, to no one in-particular; while at the same time trying to muse out what was really going on. She’d missed a large portion of what appeared to be a very important discussion. Mistral had taken all the device pieces and then tucked them away into subspace shortly after informing them of what had actually happened, and well was talking rather dully about the events thinking that she, Mistral; deserved to be yelled at.

Well . . . okay maybe in one sense but at the same time Buyan glanced back at the labyrinth it wasn't completely one sole Knights fault was it? Of course, in the middle of her wonderings Megiddo excused herself and Buyan gave the knight a friendly wave goodbye. Buyan did however seem to look interested in what was going on with hiking through the weather as she'd missed the part of them getting to another wonder by foot. "Where are we hiking?" She asked curiously and glanced around at the surroundings apparently past whatever bubble they were in it seemed to be a lot of snow. . . Why did it have to be snow? She certainly wasn’t dressed for any sort of weather beyond nice and temperate. That didn’t hamper the page though; Buyan happened to still be totally interested in where ever they were going as long as she could get warm after they got there! Anything else after that was purely a bonus.
