Maebe waited, and waited. But the attack never came.
Thaw's purring stopped, replaced by a low, disgusted growl. Eventually, the barrier faded away, leaving a very confused Maebe in its place. Peyton had just waited it out, instead of trying to attack it. Unlike America, Peyton seemed to be more interested in winning a spar than practicing their skills together.
And Maebe was, for the first time since she'd met her, truly disappointed in the girl in front of her.
"Well, that was a little cheap." Maebe admitted, holding Thaw in front of her defensively. "But, who am I to judge someone being cheap? This pot won't call your kettle black." Maebe wasn't smiling, however. Her expression looked disappointed at the turn of events, which was to be expected - but more than that - a little confused.

Two could play the disappointed game. Peyton watched the barrier with half narrowed eyes, searching for any hint of movement, a shadow, anything, but nothing came, and when it faded to nothing and Maebe was standing across from her, more or less mirroring her stance, she gave an exasperated scoff.
One that grew at the other girl's comment. "Strategy baby," she purred out, grin slipping back into place.
The knuckledusters were very nearly vibrating in her hands, but she saved her charge. It was worth nothing if her target was on full defense. A waste, an infuriating disappointment, and Peyton didn't need that today.
Wait. She told him. A little longer. A promise.
Rushing forward, she charged her friends, digging a toe into the dirt as she brought her arm around for a body shot. One she knew wouldn't connect with anything but the solid shaft of trident in Maebe's hands. Metal clanged, scraping harshly a she tried to sink spikes or blade into the other girl by sheer force of will alone.

Strategy. It was a game she knew very well, she'd just never expected Peyton to be a player in it. But this was just a lesson, slowly filed away to be considered later for further study. She nodded lightly, and her small, pleasant smile returned.
"I'm always up for a good strategy game." Maebe murmured lightly, as she surged forward, and twirled to drive Thaw into Peyton's side this time.

The return of Maebe's smile was a welcome thing, it meant they were both having fun again, and that was really what this was all about, deep down, wasn't it? Peyton genuinely enjoyed a good brawl, every aspect. She loved the feel of sinking her fist into somebody's body, and she had realized, not long ago, just how much she didn't mind a little pain.
No, not just didn't mind, but seemed to revel in it. It made her feel alive, ironically.
It was bad timing that had Peyton releasing Warrick's collected Fear just as Maebe closed in on her. Bad timing that sent that surge of energy through that tiny body just as the tips of the trident plunged into her side, effectively pinning her in a why that rendered all that extra speed obsolete. She lashed out, swinging for the other girl, hitting the handle of her weapon, but it didn't do a damn lick of good.
The sharp, burning weight of Thaw as he sank into her side should have been awful, and it hurt like hell, but despite the hiss, the girl held onto her smile. Even as Warrick's charge faded, even as she felt her shield cracking.

Maebe watched, her pleasant smile cracking into something a little more genuine, a little more cruel. She watched as Peyton struggled, flailing as hit after hit slammed into the trident and not her, like a feral cat struggling to free itself from the hold of a long reach pole. It was a beautiful sight, and she drank it in, calmly holding her ground until Peyton's energy was all but expended.
"Mmm." She purred, pulling the trident back and slamming it into her again. "Strategy."

For a very brief second Peyton sagged against the trident as all that borrowed energy leaked away from her in a disappointing flood. Such a waste. A god damned waste. If she'd had the luxury of it she'd have been pissed, but her shield was cracked to s**t, and if she had any hope of pulling a victory out of her hat there could be no mistakes from here on out.
Even then, luck needed to be on her side.
Maebe pulled her weapon back, and Peyton staggered, fighting for her balance for a handful of seconds before rising up again to peg the other girl with a hard smile. Her words tasted bitter as they slid back over her tongue and down her throat, but she swallowed them anyways.
It was very well played, pinning her back, but it was also just a touch...ruthless. Peyton could appreciate that. She could also return the favor. Tightening her grip on one of Warrick's handles, the daintier blonde rushed the Moon, and instead of aiming for a body shot with that cocked back fist, she brought it up in a powerful hay-maker to slam knuckles and spikes into the other girl's jaw, snapping her head back.

Maebe had nothing to save her from the powerful hit that slammed into her newly healed jaw. She went down hard, her trident barely scraping against Peyton as she tumbled to the ground.
Her hand rested on her jaw, moving it to check if it was broken, but she knew better. The pain she felt was just the old scars from Sasha's break returning to remind her that Peyton wasn't the only person who liked to play dirty.

The trident scratched along her side as Maebe dropped, and even lat little bite, with her shield hanging on by a thread, hurt. Warrick's voice floated through her mind, reminding her to have a car, but she didn't need the warning, she knew. It was pure reaction that had her foot sweeping out to lay the flat of her boot against the other girl's shoulder. A simple follow through motion that had been carried out before she'd realized Maebe hadn't immediately made a move to get back to her feet. That made her pause, an uncertain look flitting across freckle kissed features. HP: 4 DMG: 3 CHG: 2/3

Maebe hadn't moved, and Peyton was caught by surprise. That made her little, secret smile slip out, unfettered when Peyton's boot kicked her in the shoulder. If anything, it made that smile grow. Thaw was left unused as Maebe wrapped both of her arms around the leg that Peyton used, heaving it up into the air to try and knock Peyton off of her feet and onto the floor. If she succeeded, Maebe would be on Peyton before she could blink. Thaw was pointed steadily at the girl's neck either way, pressing down on actual skin. "Yield." HP: 13 Damage: 7 Charge: 3/3

Peyton's shield broke and she found herself on her back before she even realized what had happened. She recalled a smile, a devilish little smile that was not to be trusted. But this was Maebe. There was a pressure against her neck. A sharp prickling that served to drill home the fact that she had no shield, though with the dampeners in play it was hard to say what would happen if the other girl drove her weapon down. Pey would live, there would be no lasting damage, but beyond that? Best not to find out. Yeilding wasn't exactly in her nature, but she knew when she'd been beat. Small hands came up, Warrick returning to his totem form. "Yeah yeah, you win."

At first, Maebe did not retreat. But a few seconds of staring passed, before Thaw disappeared from her hands, and she reached out for Peyton to help her up. "You are pretty badass, Peypey." Maebe teased, using the nickname that she'd never used before in this life. "I knew it, but it's nice to get a reminder."
