Rory gave the man a grin at that. Showing the horses was much more his forte than fighting lessons. He nodded and led the man to the ramshackle stables. "Donnae let th' outside fool ye. What's inside are some o' th' best o' wor stock." He went in and to the first stall, accepting friendly nuzzles from the huge dappled grey stallion within it. "This here's Kettle. Raised him from a foal." It was clear the boy had a lot of pride in the animal and his trade. "Me clan is known in th' North for th' horses we raise. Wor clan head thought some o' us should bring a few down South an' see how they fair... along wi' wor other trades."

As clear as it was that the boy took pride in his work, it was equally clear that his horse bore great love for him. Animals, Jack knew, were often better judges of character than any human. It seemed he had been right about young Rory after all. Any man whose animals were that affectionate were good in his book. He smiled, then appraised the beast with the eye of a seasoned horseman.

"He is a fine stallion," Jack agreed, and it was true. He looked to be well cared for, seemed to come from good stock; he would have to do a more thorough inspection to say for certain, but he would bet that Kettle was in the peak of health.

Aster, for his part, sidled up to the stall and thrust his nose at the stallion, sniffing him curiously.

Kettle snorted at the buck and poked his nose back, sniffing at the other in greeting. He was curious about the creature and man his boy had brought into his stables.

Rory just grinned at the man with the praise to his horse. "If'n ye like him well 'nuff, w' sell horses, too. Not him, o' course, but w' got some others." He gestured to a few stalls down the way with various horses, all well-kept and healthy.

If the stallion was amenable, Jack would give him a good scratch before nodding to the boy. "Lets have a look, then. I always have men in need of good horses."

Part of Jack missed the days when he still rode horses. They were simpler days, perhaps easier, and there was nothing that quite compared to the beauty of taking a fine horse through its paces, but he would not trade Astrophel for the world. Their bond went much deeper than anything that even the finest horse masters could achieve with their steeds. It was soul-deep.

He left Aster to commune with the horses as he saw fit and started down the line with Rory. "What do you train them for?" he asked. There was a world of difference between a plow horse, a warhorse, and a gentleman's (or lady's) mount. Or a carthorse and a circus horse. Or any number of other possibilities. Most were raised as workhorses or mounts. It took a certain kind of handling to make a horse fit for battle. But Her Majesty's Cavalry had need of all kinds and fresh blood was never a bad thing.

"Depends on th' need. Most are for pullin' th' carts or haulin' wor gear, but th' nimble ones, like me Kettle, w' train t' do th' trick ridin'. I can show ye some o' it if'n ye're interested," the boy offered, coming out of his shell with talk of the horses and his chosen profession. He was far more comfortable with that than the idea of learning to fight.

At the mention of trick riding, Jack perked right up. Now that was something that he had never managed to catch sight of. He had always wanted to, of course, but somehow, he always seemed to miss the opportunity. During his childhood, he suspected that his mother had deliberately kept him from it for feat he would attempt it himself. Well. She wasn't wrong.

"Let's see what you can do," he said with a grin.

Rory positively beamed at the man's words and nodded. "Alreet, then." He moved back down the stalls to where Kettle was, reaching out to stroke the stallion's nose. "Ay, ay, laddie. Ye ready t' show wor new friend what ye can do?" He stepped into the stall, taking the bridle and reins from where they hung beside the stall, and moved to put them on the horse. Kettle stayed obediently still as his owner got him ready.

Once bridled, Kettle was led out by the boy to be saddled, Rory's focus narrowing down to what he was doing to prepare the horse for riding. He checked and rechecked to make sure the saddle was properly on and buckled. He swung up onto the horse and rode him out into the corral attached to the stables. He grinned at Jack, leaning forward to rest his forearms on the pommel. "What would you like to see first?"

"I leave it to you," he said. "You are the expert." Jack felt perhaps a little like a child going to the circus for the first time. He could not keep the grin off of his face as he crossed his arms and stood well enough out of Rory's way.

Even Astrophel seemed interested in what was going on, keeping his eyes fixed on the pair, his ears perked forward.

Rory laughed and urged the horse forward into and easy canter around the corral. Once he had a feel for the horse, the boy stood up on the horse's back, keeping his balance. As he passed Jack, he dropped down to Kettle's back and leaned to the side, using his leg muscles and one foot in the stirrup to ride on the side of the horse, arms outstretched. He leaned back up and grabbed the pommel, sliding back up to stand again. Leaning forward, he held the pommel and stretched one leg up, striking a pose almost like a dancer.

Dropping down to the saddle again, Rory rode the horse over to where Jack was and made him dance about, picking up his feet or stepping to the side, sometimes turning in a circle or backing up. At the end, Rory had Kettle take a bow, bowing himself as if having just completed a performance.

Jack watched the display with intense interest. While he was enjoying the aesthetics and admiring the athleticism of the performance, part of him was calculating the required mechanics and potential usefulness of such skill.

When Rory and his Kettle took their bows, he applauded them. "Bravo! A remarkable talent you have, young sir." He approached the pair. "What do you say to a new proposal? Your skills for mine?"

Though there was a great deal of boyish enthusiasm behind his desire to learn, he was also had practical reasons for gaining the knowledge. Those skills, he thought, could be adapted to horseback combat. Or in his case, Guardian-back. Spirits knew they would need all the added advantages they could get against the Wolves. Increased nimbleness could only help.

Rory slid down from the horse's back and walked over to the man, leading Kettle by his reins. A slight blush colored his cheeks, both from the exercise and the embarrassment he felt anytime someone complimented his riding skills. "Takes a lot t' learn it, though. Me da taught me since I was practically a wee bairn. Easier t' learn t' fight, aye?" He shuffled his feet a bit and shrugged, looking up at the buck. "Would he want ye ridin' him like tha' anyway?"

The Captain glanced sidelong at his Guardian - sure enough, the buck's ears were perked with keen interest. Astrophel did not display the same disdain for horses that other Guardians were known for, but he could be competitive and he loved his mischief. Jack suspected that he would be especially eager to show off to Idriss - another way to say "I'm a better Guardian than you are." Another taunt to goad her with, and doubtless cause Jordun grief.

"I think you will find him an enthusiastic student," he said. Though to be fair, Aster would probably appreciate the martial applications...eventually. "Besides! If it were easy, it would hardly be worth doing." He grinned unrepentantly. "What do you say?"

"Could use a friend of authority as me people tend t'get worselves in trouble, whether we be th' cause or not," Rory chuckled, shrugging one shoulder. "Alreet, ye have me. I'll trade fightin' skills for ridin' skills, true 'nuff." He leaned against the horse. "I figured yer buck there would likely be smarter than a horse. Not tha' Kettle ain't one o' th' brightest o' wor lot, but I reckon Guardians got near human levels of smarts, if th' legends be true."

Jack raised a brow at the younger man's bluntness. He was always one to appreciate it when people were straightforward rather than dancing around a topic, but not many would openly admit to wanting his friendship just because he was in a high place. "Not planning to take advantage of me already, are you?" he asked, and there was an edge to the words that suggested Rory could be traipsing into dangerous territory.

The captain did not really think that Rory meant to abuse his proposed friendship, but he had been wrong about people before. It was not as though Jack was unwilling to help anyone in need - especially friends - but neither would he stand by and let his friendship be abused.

The boy blinked, caught off guard. "What? N-no. I wouldnae do tha'. I joost see it as an extra perk. Me people might think wor friendship is to use yer status, but I donae see it like tha'. Ye helped me an' I appreciate it. If we be friends, it's 'cause I want yer friendship, not what ye bring t' th' table." Honestly, he was a bit hurt by the accusation.
