Jake made a mental note not to piss Stormy off, though that was kinda a given. Girls were scary when mad.
Still, a match was a match, which meant he couldn't just take it easy on her. She'd probably get mad at him too if he did.
"Um..."
Come to think of it, there was a LOT about Sherry he didn't seem to know too much about. What a fail boyfriend he was.
"Well, she likes waffles... and... books."
Best boyfriend ever.

Oof. She was learning quickly how hard actual hunters could hit. Maybe this was what she got for hanging around trainees.
"It's a good start!" Stormy encouraged him, her swing more like a light tap than anything else. "Books and pancakes. Okay, hmm. Hmmmmmm. Tell me more!"

Maybe Stormy was having an off-day. He knew he had them rather often whenever he fought Sherry. Or maybe it was because he was holding back. So yah, maybe she was just holding back, not wanting to hurt him more. The notion was appreciated, but really, Stormy, he wasn't that fragile. You can hit a little harder.
"You don't... have to take it easy on me. It's fine, really."
Perhaps she was still feeling guilty from that incident? He hoped not. It wasn't her fault.
"W-well, um..."
He saw what you were doing, Stormy. He saw.
"H-hey, enough about me. What about you and Gale? Has he taken you anyplace special?"
He delivered a casual swing because, well, they were still fighting... while having a talk about relationships. Nothing unusual here.

For a moment there was an extra bit of color to Stormy's cheeks; she wasn't trying to hold back . . . Her concentration just seemed all over the place, and now she was starting to feel winded. "Sorry, I'm used to the trainees," she tried to excuse hastily, snapping back to reality with a sheepish look. Maybe that was all. She couldn't be this awful otherwise, right?
(Or maybe she had been kidding herself. It wasn't as if she had put in the work to get her coat like everyone else.)
Feigning a strike, Stormy darted away with surprising speed, opening herself to Thane's surplus Fear. The usual cold feeling began to creep over her, but for whatever reason, the connection between them was faulty--the soothing sensations went away before anything could really start, leaving her feeling even more embarrassed as the glow of her weapon's runes faded. Her face fell; she might as well have been a trainee on day one with her first battle, the way this was going . . .

As quick as her expression had dulled, it was back to its usual buoyant, if self-conscious smile. "Y-Yeah, um, Gale took me to London once," she told Jake. "It was a risk, though; they say we're not really supposed to stick around places we'd get recognized. But we ate at a pub and walked through Kensington Gardens and then saw a movie!" She spoke quickly, trying to act as though she was just fine now.

Jake hadn't meant to make her self-conscious, and he felt bad for saying it. Maybe she just... really was having a bad day. Nothing wrong with that, right?
"Oh, no um, I didn't mean that... um... sorry...."
He HAD noticed the charge, and while Chester told him to be careful, he reasoned it wouldn't be TOO bad, considering how many hits he had gotten in. What he HADN'T expected was for it to fall through, though it wasn't like charges meant a guaranteed hit. He had caught that look of disappointment, and couldn't help feeling bad for her. So instead of unleashing his own charge to attack, he only strengthened his shield with it. That... would be enough, right?
At least Stormy was quick to pick herself up, and he offered her a sympathetic smile.
"Oh, that sounds pretty neat. I'm sure Gale wouldn't do something to put the both of you at risk."
For him... there was... no risk. It wasn't like there was anyone left in his past life that would have recognized him, and it wasn't like... he would take Sherry there anytime soon. It wasn't exactly a "touristy" spot anyways.
"Mm, a movie might be good..."
Too bad he had completely forgotten they had already gone out for a movie once and he... had totally slept right through it.

She shrugged off his apologies, saying with a nod, "Yeah, he's pretty cautious." It was why she had to push his boundaries every once in a while, consciously and unconsciously.
Used to Jake's charges hitting hard, Stormy tensed when she saw the runes flashed and was (pleasantly) surprised to see it was just a self-affecting one. "A movie would be good, but only if it's one you're both interested in! Otherwise someone'll be bored the whole time." She readied her greatsword and charged forward, swinging wide. "If all else fails, pretend you're in college and just go out to eat someplace. Even a few hours off island are good for the soul!"

Jake snickered at the idea of an overprotective Gale. It wasn't a BAD trait, but he did admit that the kid could do with some loosening up at times.
"I suppose that's true..."
Food was always good. Anything beat the MREs on the island, though he admitted he had gotten used to them by now.
Though the swing was wide, it had made him back up, preventing him from striking, and he kept his distance for a bit longer
"So, um, what are some things you're interested in?"

Used to the weight behind each swing, she managed to shift it to her other foot and pursued Jake, keeping up her momentum. "Me?" she asked, blinking. "Oh, you know. Sappy stuff, Disney things, animated movies, alternative rock that has screaming in it . . . Shouldn't we be talking about Sherry?"
The tease was followed by a jab, a surrogate for finger poking.
"'Cause you look out of your depth, and you've been dating how long?"

He was... almost scared to ask.
"I-I'm just... getting an idea of things to get her," he stammered, raising his arms defensively. Totally wasn't making a list of things to get friends also when he went out, nope.
"U-um, about a year... maybe..."
A year and he still didn't know what she REALLY liked, aside from... jewelry, and sweets.

"Ooo! Congrats on the year!" Stormy exclaimed with a bounce, and the sun might have looked dim in comparison to her smile. "You have to do something special, then! Get her something like uh--"
The swing was more of an afterthought.
"Okay books and waffles, you said that. What else? Jewelry? I think if you got her something that reminds her of like an inside joke or something, it'd be really sweet. For instance," the first swing was accompanied by a second, "before we started dating, Gale got me this cute bracelet on the cruise ship. It has three charms: a bear 'cause he thought I was like a mama bear, a dog 'cause the first time we met we made a snowdog together, and a crown 'cause of Disney!"

Stormy's enthusiasm was infectious, and he couldn't help but laugh. That was the Stormy he knew.
Her swing was greeted with a swing of his own.
"An inside joke?"
He stood and listened, taking a hit as she swung again. Ouch.
"Wow, Gale, really?" he couldn't help but snicker. Never thought he was the romantic type. That lady-killer.
"That's really sweet. I doubt I could think of something that clever."
All he had given her were a pair of leaf-shapped earrings (since they reminded him of life) and the promise ring. There was also that heart-shaped necklace, but sadly, he didn't remember that.

"Yes, really," she enthused, completely missing the sarcasm. Wincing as he dug into her shield, Stormy made sure to return the favor; better late than never to find her stride, she supposed.
"Give yourself credit, Beastboy. You just gotta think back on all the good stuff you've had with her, and it'll come to you. Besides," she added quite casually, "I think you owe her for threatening her with a knife."

His shield may have taken the damage, but the guilt that she inflicted cut even deeper, and the shame he felt prevented him from retaliating.
"I-I know, I..."
He sighed.
"I didn't MEAN to hurt her, just..."
There were no excuses for his behaviour.
"I don't know if all the presents in the world could compensate for something like that."

"I know you didn't mean to. Presents won't make everything go away," she said as a matter of factly, "but it's the thought that counts. If she loves you, then you'll be okay."
(It was easy to use that word with them, so, so, so much easier than with Gale.)
"What was up with that anyway?" Stormy added with a curious look as she moved in to strike. She didn't believe for a second Jake did it purposefully, having been the victim herself of effects that put her out of sorts.

It probably did seem like he was trying to play it off with presents, which... wasn't his intention, but he sighed, and nodded.
"I know, just... I'm scared she loves me TOO much that she'd treat it as if it's nothing."
Which... he knew she kinda was, and it somewhat irked him that she'd put her love for him over her own well-being. But then again... he'd probably do the same thing.
The strike reminded him that they were still fighting, and he winced as it cut into his shield. He gave a half-hearted swing before responding, hitting nothing but air.
"I... don't know. I've been having some... really weird dreams, and then the last thing I knew, I felt really angry, and then there was a scream. Next thing I knew... "
He wished he could have forgotten it. Or... perhaps he would have if Chester hadn't reminded him how he'd threatened to stab Sherry over something so trivial.
