Ara's gaze flicked away from him and down to his tail. "You hate it when I touch you," she said as her wings stretched out behind her and she reached her hand out towards his tail despite her words. "You either move away or tense up when I'm close to you." She frowned slightly as her fingers made contact with his tail.

Detraeus’ cheeks burned, his pulse beating like an alkara trapped in his chest. ‘I reserve my hate for a select few,’ he thought, but the words never left his lips, his tail too busy flicking upwards to press into her touch and his body too ready to scramble back like a frightened bouken. It did no such thing, but only because of absolute determination not to. Instead it sat frozen, he with his palms to the earth, cards to the ground, and pulse in his throat, attention locked on strange girl he once thought he ought to have let die in the swamps of his homeland and feed poison serpents.
“…I mind it…less…than most,” he said. ‘You’ve not earned my hate.’

Ara's eyes lit up as the tail pressed back up into her touch. Her hand paused at his words and she looked up, a small smile on her lips. "Well, that's better than hating it I guess." She raised an eyebrow as she turned her attention back to the tail. Testing her limits she traced small, random shapes over the top of the diamond shaped end of his tail.

Detraeus shuddered at the touch, the whole of his body moving under her fingers, tense enough to hold his ground, but quivering, like a raindrop in the breeze. He grit his teeth, and whipped his tail around. All of his senses in a knot and body pushed to its limits, he snatched at her waist with it, dragging her in as his wings spread out and growling as he did. The wings cast a shadow over her as their bodies pressed close, her pulse against his as plain and simple as feeling the press of a beast atop him before he shot it, and he hesitated, heartbeat wild in his throat. Because Araceli was no beast. And this would never be as simple as any battle he ever fought. He swallowed, stance sinking.
“You should not…” ‘…move so close to me…’ he thought, but never spoke the latter half, his attention frozen on the curve of her lashes — and the jagged scar down her cheek, that he could have prevented, had he killed the beast sooner.

Ara breath caught in her throat as Detra's tail snaked around her and pulled her in close. Caught completely off guard she didn't resist or even move away. Her hands pressed up against his bare chest, fingers curling inwards, briefly, before she splayed her fingers out and pressed them against his chest. The tips of her fingers just barely missed rubbing over the markings at his chest. Her eyes flit briefly down to them as he spoke and the questions she had about them sat on the tip of her tongue. She swallowed them, however, and looked back up at his face.
"And what I if I want to?" Ara moved, her body pressing closer to him. Her face was mere inches from his and she could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Her lips parted and in that moment she only wanted to kiss him. Damned the consequences for doing so. Another fraction closer and her eyes were closing as her lips pressed against his.

Detraeus made a strangled noise in his throat, body going stiff as a plank and mind temporarily blanking out as panic swamped him in a wave. Lips. Mouth. Lips. She was kissing him and—
Why had she thought this was a good—?
“Ara??” Lithian half tripped on his way back through the threshold, so startled by the sight at hand that his first instinct was to back back out again. His mouth, however, moved faster than his mind. “What are y—are you kissing—?”
Detraeus was not so lucky in terms of grace, and did trip over his own hands in the process of moving backwards, his heart like a battering ram in his chest and face burning hot as any sun in the gods’ universe.

Ara jerked back, completely taken by surprise at Lithian's voice. She had temporarily forgotten that they were at Cas' home. She felt a jerk at her waist as Detra moved back and she was pulled with him, tumbling over and back up against him. Her wings stretched out as she caught herself against his chest. Her cheeks heated as she remembered Lithian. She didn't move away as her gaze jerked around to land on Lithian, eyes narrowing at her friend. "Yes. I was kissing him."
Casseth chose that moment to walk in behind Lithian. He stopped several paces behind his friend and raised both his eyebrows. "Looks like we interrupted something." He nudged Lith's shoulders and winked. "We could uh, leave if you wanted. Though you are in the middle of my living room."

For far too long, Detraeus’ limbs refused to obey his commands, unmoving as a statue and just as useless. Then, in a rush, he scrambled, moving back further to put distance between himself and Araceli as well as his legs could carry him. His tongue tripped over itself the whole while.
“We—th—didn—nnn, you don’t—don’t…go. I—ha…” He closed his mouth, and shut his eyes, lips still burning with the shadow of her touch, the memory still so immediate that he could half feel her there. Warm. And soft. Pressing against him. He cleared his throat at a stuttered pace which degenerated into a cough and dragged his tail away as he retreated further, shaking his head. “I’ll—I’m…” He stood, dipped his head in a staggered nod to the company, and made for the door.
Lithian, meanwhile, frowned, eyes following his every movement. “Wait. Where do you think you’re—?” But Detraeus shoved past him without a word, earning a deeper scowl and the start of another comment, but he was gone before the words left Lithian’s lips. Once alone again with Casseth and Ara, Lithian folding his arms, glowering at Detraeus’ retreating form. “What is wrong with him? He’s always so angry…” He glanced back to Araceli, frown softening to something far more concerned than irritated. “What did we walk in on? Did he hurt you?”

Ara's wings sagged slightly at his further retreat Her eyes following him as he moved to leave. She wanted to say something, to reach out and stop him from leaving but she sat there, frozen to the spot as her cheeks heated up even more. She had kissed him. Or at least had started to. Her gaze jerked to Lithian and she narrowed her eyes. Ara knew it had been a complete accident that they had decided to return at that moment but that didn't make her any less irritated by the intrusion. Her body tensed at his next question. "Of course he didn't hurt me." She stood, brushing her hands over her clothes and straightening them out.
"I kissed him. I made the move. Surely I'm allowed to do that. Or should I ask for your permission next time?" Ara huffed, more upset at the fact that Detra left than at Lithian. Lithian was there, though, and her mind needed to lash out at someone. She decided it'd be best that she leave before she said anything else. Tucking her wings in close she pushed past Lithian and stormed out of Casseth's house, intent on heading back to her temporary home at the inn.

Lithian blinked, entirely startled by the backlash, and then frowned, opening his mouth. “But—Ara…” She was gone, though, before he got anywhere with his words, and he winced, shoulders sagging as he rubbed one and glanced to Casseth. “I didn’t mean to…it was just…” He sighed and shut his eyes, shaking his head and moving over to gather up the cards. “I know Detraeus is your friend. Perhaps I ought best have said nothing…” After tucking the cards into two neat stacks, he glanced back to Casseth. “Do…you and your father need any more help this afternoon…?”

Cas glanced to Lithian and shrugged. "He'd likely had left regardless. To be honest, I'm surprised he let her get that close. He must trust her." He leaned against the door frame as he watched Lithian gather the cards up. Cas shook his head at Lith's question. "We should be able to manage on our own. Thanks for the help though."

Lithian nodded and, without the company of their previous companions, soon said his goodbyes to Casseth. Why Detraeus unnerved him so, he couldn’t say, but his concerns over the strange, short-tempered oblivionite lingered at the back of his mind for the entirety of his walk home, and long into the evening after that.
