"Someone... special..." Yep, that sounded like Anita. She was direct, yet particular: he thought she might be the type with a lot of friends, but no best friend. Then again, Justin didn't know her half as well as he would like to. He watched as she caught herself slumping over the counter and straightened with a snap. "Of course people want to kiss her, Cruz. But it isn't as easy as it is with you." He smiled at the little croc. If everyone was as affectionate and free as Cruz, the world might not be better, but it'd probably have more goofy smiles in it.
"Ok. So a group date is when... uhh, like if Anita and Mordekai and you and I were to all go to the aquarium or whatever. As a group. It allows people to enjoy each other's company without the pressure of a date! Plus, if, for example, Anita and Mordekai were getting quite along, you and I would make up an excuse to go off and leave them alone. You've got to create the right atmosphere. Though usually a group date is two couples..." he trailed off, then looked up at Cruz and shrugged. "So, yeah," he ended lamely. Actually, he thought a group date would be a lot of fun. Group date, group outing, whatever.
"Where does Anita like to go anyway? Besides coffee." He fished out a scrap of paper from his pants pocket. An old post-it note, one side was scribbled with the names of a couple games he wanted to pre-order. On the other side, Justin work his number in very neat, orderly handwriting. "I know you don't have a phone, but this is my number anyway, although I'm pretty sure Anita already has it."

Cruz didn't understand the 'special' label. Everyone was special because everyone was different. Even if you wanted to get more critical and discerning about it, your friends and family were undoubtedly special, why else would you care about them so much? So why weren't they the "right" kind of special? What was the "right" kind?
"Of course people want to kiss her, Cruz. But it isn't as easy as it is with you."
The frei frowned. The only reason it wasn't easy for people is because they made it unnecessarily complicated for themselves. It is easy, but they have all these rules and systems in place that change subtly from person to person. How is anyone supposed to know what anyone else wants? And getting them to talk about it was like pulling teeth, like it was some big secret. Did humans really expect each other to guess and poke blindly at people they care about?
Cruz left these thoughts drift as Justin explained the process of a group date. He squinted at the term 'couples', which was what he figured this would be. Cruz didn't voice it, but as Justin's lame end he shook his head slowly. That wouldn't work for Anita.
"Mm," the croc rumbled in thought, only to be interrupted by a slip of paper. Cruz clutched it carefully, like a treasure, and studied Justin's scrawl. "Thank you. She does. Mm-- 'Nita... likes the beach, likes food places, parks and places to walk Tango. She waits. A lot. Been able to get her to go places if it's like she is being asked, but 'Nita doesn't usually ask to go out. Don't know why." Obviously her friends would be very happy to have her, as they should, but Anita always seemed to wait for others to make the first move when it came to personal plans. on the other hand, she was quick as anything to make plans when they revolved around him. His woman was very strange.

Watching Cruz's face crease as he listened was kind of interesting, Justin thought. But his own face creased into a frown when the croc had said 'she waits. a lot.' Huh. It didn't sound like anita was actively looking, but Cruz knew the woman far better than he. Maybe Anita was shy or just reluctant for other reasons. And Cruz genuinely wanted her to be happy. It was very, very sweet. He clapped a hand on the frei's shoulder.
"Cruz, you just keep on sending nice guys her way! You're persistent enough; it's bound to pay off. Don't get discouraged, okay? I'm gonna run and get my game before I forget, but if you need anything, just text me or call me or something." He spun the ring on his finger and smiled tightly at the raevan. The crowd was getting worse, so Justin stood, giving Cruz a light kiss on the forehead before heading off to the store.

Until Justin's assurance, the croc had watched him with such uncertainty. He wanted very much for Anita to be happy, to find someone nice that could keep her safe, make her laugh, take care of her, and kiss her. Once he explained, it seemed Justin understood -- and he told Cruz to continue! Perhaps he was on the right track after all. Maybe, with enough persistence, he could overcome these hurdles that Anita set for herself -- that all humans set for themselves.
The kiss to the forehead was appreciated. Cruz bowed into it and beamed at Justin as he left, offering the man a wave, and then one to Anita as well. She smiled and greeted Justin warmly.
"Just keep on sending nice guys her way!"
He just had to keep trying. Somehow, someway, this would work. Anita could be happy. Cruz left his perch at the fountain adjacent to the game store. It was time to try and find at least one more willing participant for today.END
