"Good." He gestured with his head to follow after, his pace still the brisk walk that had allowed him to keep up so easily. The infirmary at the time was as Jack had said: numerous cots were filled with bloodied hunters, some merely with broken limbs, others getting glass yanked from their skin. The air was full of dark murmurs of revenge still, though some appeared horrified in the aftermath--others, however, almost seemed satisfied.

"Pick your poison and I'll walk you through it."

Huh. So far, so good.

Leslie glanced around, taking in the sights. Everyone sure was in a s**t state-- his own desires for revenge had manifested in him curled up into the fetal position, biting at his hands to keep from screaming. He'd wanted to go off island, to go to his family and hurt the ones that had hurt him, and instead he'd gotten lost in the visions, furious and seething.

In retrospect, maybe that had been for the best.

"Uh," Leslie said, intelligently, pointing at a random sucker with glass all over and clutching their right hand. "That one?"

"Easy." He vaguely recognized the hunter--a frequent visitor to the infirmary--and found himself giving the man a wolfish grin as he approached. The patient in turn attempted to try and frantically catch someone else's attention, breaking into whines once he realized he would get stuck with that a*****e again.

Surprise: he got two.

----

The remaining hours of Jack's shift were spent cycling through what patients they could, and while it wasn't nearly as satisfying doing the work himself, by the end of it his dark mood had evaporated back into his usual casual dicketry. They hadn't finished everything, but that had been hoping for too much; as it turned out, he seemed to attract dyslexic idiots.

"Seriously, get your crap together, Shitstain," he was saying to Leslie as he peeled off his single glove. "You won't be getting anything done if no-one can ******** read your handwriting." Jack wasn't even going to ask about why the guy was wearing a set of scrubs way too large for his scrawny a**. "Stick the file back--in alphabetical order still in case you forgot--and we'll be done for the day."

It was so much better being the a*****e nurse with no bedside manner, instead of being on the receiving end of that kind of care.

--

Christ, Leslie was tired. His hand hurt-- it was mostly healed up, but it was that or write even worse chicken scratch with his left hand.

"Oh give it a ******** rest," he snapped, elbowing Jack hard in the ribs. Which is to say, probably around his hips instead, given the height difference. Listen. It wasn't his fault. "It's, sort of, kind of neater when my hand's not ********. I also know it's alphabetical order, you twatwaffle. Christ. Do you sort your books alphabetical order, too?"

He scooped up the files, and went about disseminating them to the appropriate cabinets. Ugh. His back hurt, too, from leaning over to write on a hard surface, since he had to use extra pressure with his right hand while it was injured. Mostly so the letters would be even remotely legible.

"Thank ********," Leslie muttered. "I'm ********' free."

Jack made a gruff noise in his throat at the prod and decided he'd need extra detergent for this set of laundry. Shitstain did not need to know that he did, in fact, categorize his books like that.

"Oh don't be such big v****a, that was barely anything." He moved to the nearest sink to wash his hands, taking care not to move his recovering one excessively. "Aside from that one muscled a*****e with the anger issue, that is." A lot of dodging had been involved with that one.

Once thoroughly cleansed, Jack turned to him with a little smirk. "Better than bedpans, though, hmm?"

"Yeah yeah yeah. Whatever. For the first three months I skipped literally every ******** duty and still have a hard time remembering my division." Leslie shrugged, taking a different sink, doing a thorough but not-as-thorough-as-Jack kinda ******** yeah better than bedpans. I hope Sunny doesn't forbade me from helping you out or some s**t, she's an evil b***h. Evil."

(An evil b***h he trusted. An evil b***h he'd seen in a world where he'd been more than the sum of his broken parts. A world where he was capable of good.)

He took a moment to pause. "Why the ******** are you in Life division, anyway? You like surgery and s**t?"

If Sunny had an issue, well, it wouldn't be his to take up and defend anyway. "Jesus, and you're still alive somehow. ******** amazing; the cockroaches always did find a way to survive."

There were days Jack considered playing hooky with his duties. Then he remembered Chel did it, and anything Chel did and took pride in was not something he wanted to associate with in any way, shape, or form on principle.

"I was already looking at biology in college when I got here," Jack went on to say with a little shrug. "Wasn't suicidal enough for Moon and Sun, and Death I guess has enough Caelius bitches right now. How the hell is someone like you in here, though? Scrubs or not, you still look two steps away from getting picked up by the police for vagrancy."

Leslie flipped Jack the finger with both hands, even if one was limited by most of a brace.

He sure as ******** wasn't telling Jack the real reason. Well, one of them. But telling him why he was singled out would be fine: it was something he'd come to terms with a long time ago.

"There wasn't anyone to miss me," he said, blunt. "I'd already dropped out and s**t. This place is a step up, even if I did have to endure the ******** basement."

"Oh, no, I don't give two shits about what pisshole you crawled out of before getting recruited. I meant here in the infirmary," Jack clarified, smiling at the pair of birds made his way. "Besides the Sunny part, that is. Why are you interested?"

Of course no-one woud miss someone like Shitstain, just as he was sure nobody was missing him back home. And of course Shitstain was also a drop out because Jack swore he was a walking stereotype of all things wrong with "today's youth", and it was the most bizarre and hilarious thing to happen to him in a while. Like his life was actually a movie in disguise.

Rolling his eyes, Leslie tugged off the scrubs, revealing shabby, too-baggy clothing underneath. He then promptly ruined the effect of hand-washing by shoving his hands promptly into his jean pockets.

"You could learn to be more specific then, jesus christ." Leslie just shrugged. "I came in and asked, how the ******** do you think?"

Okay, that wasn't entirely accurate. The first nurses had thought the same thing Jack did, and Sunny had thought he was a junkie, and the fact that he had to get subdued by an orderly didn't help his case much. But, for some reason, somehow, she'd said okay. And been a b***h. And he'd been a b***h back. It was fine.

"For the rest, well, for one it's none of your ******** business, but." It was only fair. Jack had explained, basic as it had been. It wasn't Jack's fault that the answer laid in Wonderland. "Two, Sunny's a right c**t but this gig helps keep the island running. LIke I said, I kinda like this place in comparison."

He nodded slightly. "Charity work from a charity case: how very quaint." And yet somewhat interesting, seeing as most people in Shitstain's case never bothered improving their lot in life, let alone volunteer to help others.

"Am I going to get a name from you, then? Or do you prefer Shitstain? Ratface? Dicklicker?" Jack looked positively pleased to keep going if needed. "And what division are you anyway?"

He paused, then gave him a scrutinizing look.

"Don't tell me you're thinking of transferring into Life."

"Leslie, Mist. You gonna give me yours or is this some shitty attempt at trying to keep an upper ******** hand?"

If the giraffe had been close enough to elbow again, he would have. Instead, he gathered up his scrubs and kept his distance.

"No ******** way," he said, blunt. "Like ******** I want to be devoted to any one thing."

That sounded like work.

"Good." Leslie, he thought. Leslie. "Leslie," he repeated with as straight a face as he could. "God damn, you sure you don't like mine better? Your mom was a real b***h naming you that."

Normally Jack would have extended his hand, but he wasn't going to touch the guy if he could avoid it. "Jack Hawthorn," he said as he peeled off his scrubs top, revealing a plain black tee underneath. Mist, though, now that was interesting. He already had a Life and Sun at his disposal, but a jack of all trades would be fun to collect...and a spunky one at that.

Leslie resisted the urge to draw his weapon. God. He should have just made s**t up, or used his middle name-- but Sunny and the other nurses knew him by the first name, so the ruse would be up. It usually went better when he didn't try to hide it: the humiliation now and up front, rather than later.

"Even your name sounds douchey," he said, almost in awe. "I'm out of here. My next shift is in a few days, so I'm sure I'll be unfortunate enough to see your ******** face again."
