Keke whined, giving his sister a grateful nuzzle before mimicing her stance. If she was growling, so was he! He didn't know why they were growling or what the threat was or who the khehora was that stood, tall and white and monolithic, near them. He hissed, though he wanted - partially - to go over and investigate those feathers of hers and the shimmering light. What was that? Why was it so pretty?
But his sister was treating it as a threat, so Keke decided that, after the scary rocks, better safe than sorry...
He turned, yurping puzzledly at his father. Friend? But Zarri had been growling, and the other khehora wasn't from their clan! He didn't know her, thus she couldn't be a friend. He yurped again, looking at Zarri. Did she get it? He didn't.
He looked at the lady khehora, up and up and up. She was a lot like daddy, but she looked and smelled completely opposite of him. He yurped again, confused. Was she friend? Foe? What was she? What had that been? What was going on?

Suluksati thought that the ferocity and sounds were adorable. "It's all right." she rumbled softly, "They can behave however they wish. As long as they are safe." It was just too cute.
She let the little ones hide behind Samael. "No... But I was attacked by one, not too long ago. There may be others." she sniffed the air but could smell nothing, other than the family in front of her. She approached Samael. "It has been a long time... how have you been?" she asked, almost cautiously.(615/1500)

Zarri scoffed at Pappy's ridiculous words. Friend? This feral female was no friend. Hadn't he seen her try and attack them with her glowing sparkles of shininess? She'd definitely been trying to blind all of them and take Sam out... Pappy could be so protective, but sometimes he was just stupid. The young Diabi glared at the approaching claws as they stepped up to greet her father, alarmed that he did nothing to stop her. She must've tricked him already... This wasn't good... She turned and nudged her maw against Keke's side, chirping out encouragement for him to stick near her as she waggled her tail and pounced off in the direction of Sam's turned back. They'd have to slay the white witch, and free Pappy themselves!
Sam's emerald gaze flicked out to the pile of rubble. Whatever it was... It was strange. Certainly nothing that was born into this world. It had appeared crafted, maybe by Magescian hands or even Gaili magic. But that swirl of light that danced where its legs should've been...
He shook his head of the thoughts and turned his attention to Suluksati again. He grinned wryly. ”I've been keeping my claws full, if you couldn't tell.” He flicked his tail in the direction of where he thought his youngsters were. ”Really, though, they aren't as challenging as my mate is,” he sighed in exasperation.

Suluksati laughed. "I could indeed tell!" she said, pretending that the word mate hadn't made her slightly... upset? Yes, perhaps a little bit upset. She refused to admit to as unheroic an emotion as jealousy. "I did not know you had a mate!" she said, approaching, "She must be very beautiful, if your darlings..." she offered, smiling at the two who were 'hidden' behind their father, "are any indication." She laughed at the little one's antics, "Though clearly spirited."
She longed to have nestlings of her own, she really did, and the longing - and its futility - hurt all the more hollowly as she watched them - and Samael. It was very unlikely that she would have a mate of her own, or even another brief foray of entertainment, like with that young Jijikko. It was unlikelier still that she would become with clutch, or that she would carry them to laying, or that she would survive long enough to care for them until they hatched.
No, she felt. Nestlings were not likely to be in the cards for her. "You are very fortunate..." she murmured softly, sadly.

Keke, not knowing what else to do and being very confused, chirped back. He had no idea what she was doing, but she usually knew what to do, and that was more than he did. Plus, he didn't want to be left out. He walked cautiously behind her, uncertainly. What was she doing, anyway? He made a quieter yurping sound this time as he waited for Zarri to so something, anything, to make this make sense.

Sam found himself chuckling dryly as Sulu commented on his 'mate.' If Levi were here, he would've loved it. Definitely fast friends with Sulu if she could say things like that to his face, clan differences be damned. ”He is,” Sam replied, emphasizing that his companion was in fact, male. It was something he hadn't even expected himself. He'd always assumed he'd end up with a woman and actually have a clutch of his own blood... Not that he didn't love Keke and Zarri! It just... wasn't what he'd thought would happen for himself.
”We were... Are,” Sam agreed, thinking back on the pure happenstance that had led them to these three beautiful eggs... And the two Sam had been allowed to keep. He swallowed back the bitterness that threatened to rise in his throat and shook his head, instead focusing on how disheartened Sulu sounded. ”I've wanted a clutch for a long time, since I was much younger,” He told her seriously. ”Sometimes, it just takes a little patience. Don't count yourself out yet.”
Zarri kicked her heels up in delight as she noted Keke following after her. Good! He was on board! Even with the two of them together, though, the white woman still towered over them. They'd have to attack from above! Even if... Even if they couldn't fly yet... All these rocks and crags around here would be height enough. She'd never see it coming! And then Pappy would praise them for how brave and daring they were. She chirped softly as she reached a little rock outcropping. She leaned onto her haunches and rumbled back at Keke before starting her climb.

Ooo! Climbing. Was that what his sister was doing? Climbing made sense! Explore while the adults were distracted? What if there was another rock thing? Maybe they could sneak up on it and see what it was! Ooo, it was so exciting!
Keke clambered up after his sister, wings outstretched for balance. He was slightly better at it than her - his magical affinity for stone and earth, undeveloped as it was, helped. He was curious. Where were they going?

He? But... Oh. "With a life like mine..." she murmured, watching the little ones start to clamber around behind their father, "It is very unlikely..." She smiled at them, regretful and dissappointed. So. Samael was into males. The thought was darkly funny. "I don't think I actually told you, did I?" she said, sitting down, "We've met often enough, and yet I've never told you what I do..." it was as much an exclamation to herself as to him - She had told so many other people her quest: from young Raemos to young Avani - but not Samael. But now that it is clear that he is hopelessly out of my league... What is the harm? she thought. Wait... league? What on magesc? Had she been trying to court him? At all? Wow. She'd done an excellent job. She was about to open her mouth and let whatever admission she wished to do pour out, when she heard a rumbling, crackling, sound. "What is that?!" she exclaimed, turning towards the echoing call with a startled snarl. (981/1500)

DraconicFeline Left two for Sulu to kill, then we can call it quits! Zarri rumbled out in disapproval as Keke drew too close to her heels. So she was a bit slower than him. Big deal! She was still the leader of this excursion, and he needed to respect her authority! She huffed and chattered back at him, her tail lashing precariously close to him as she struggled to lift herself up the crumbling rocks. When she finally made it to the top, she sighed in relief, her tiny forearms quivering from exertion. She spared a glance to Pappy. Still chattering away at that woman. Good. They wouldn't even know what hit them! She scuttled over to the edge, getting as near to the adult Khehora as possible.
Hm... She'd have to jump over Pappy to hit the white menace... Still! She could do it! She crouched low, stilling her entire body as she'd seen Pappy do when he was stalking prey. She gave her rump a wiggle, fanned her wings, and- Froze. Some sound- some noise reverberated through her thoughts. She chirped out in pain. Whatever it was, it wasn't Keke! Her brother could never make a painful noise like that! She turned to look over her shoulder, mewling pathetically as a looming shadow dropped over the two young Khehora.
The creature from before... So big, so intimidating, so... So... Zarri shrieked, yowling down at Pappy and his friend as the rocky thing reached for them. In her garbled speech, she clucked and hissed at Keke to run, shoving her body against his in desperate coaxing.
~~~
Sam tipped his head at Sulu. he had no idea what she meant by "life like hers." Surely all Khehora had basically the same goals? Become strong, start a family, slay dragons, keep Magescians from walking all over them. Of course, he'd never actually heard what her personal goals were, but...
He didn't get a chance to ask. Something rumbled along the rocks behind him. The sound was closely followed by the high-pitched wailing of young Orakoi. Sam's young Orakoi. he could ask her later. Right now, his young needed him to defend them from these strange earthen creatures!
With a snarl, Sam kicked into the air, a plume of dust erupting from where his claws had left the ground. He crushed his body against the mara menace closest to his children. It jerked away, the magic floating around it helping to keep it aloft. The Gaili swung at it with his tail, knocking it off the rock outcropping before sending earthen spires out to trap it in place. It crumbled under the force, and its magic orb zipped away.
There were others, though. Others that threatened his family. Sam jumped at another, grinding at it with his fangs and scraping at it with his claws and blasting rocks at its mid-line while it haphazardly swung about, trying to free itself of him. At some point, the magic keeping it going must have realized the helplessness of the situation, because it too detached and vanished off over the horizon.
Keke squeaked apologetically as he accidentally bumped into his sister, arching his little neck backward to avoid her tail as it lashed right in front of his face. He was sorry, but it wasn't his fault she was slower, but liked to take the lead! "Nrr." he mumured.
He crouched to pounce alongside her, but something nudged him, some sense that was not yet fully there. He felt rocks and magic and floating and was confused. Sometimes he felt something when his daddy used his magic, but daddy wasn't using his magic so what...?
He keened in surprise as the shadow blocked out the light and looked up at the statuesque features of the strange creature from before. He was scared, and his sister was scared, and that never happened, which made him more scared.
Keke, though, needed to protect his sister. So, mustering his little body, he spread his sings and hissed at the thing, trying to be threatening. He didn't quite manage it, but he thought he was doing a good job.
And then daddy came in and crushed it, and everything was okay because he didn't have to demonstrate his ferocity - which was not much. Keke ran into a rock crevice and hid, calling to Vazarri to come too.
Sulu's eyes widened at the keening sounds of the little ones, and something primal and angry stirred in her chest. She growled - softly at first - then louder as Samael rushed at one of the rock things. "Unconscionable..." she hissed beginning to shimmer with the holy light of her magic. How dare these abominations attack children? They did not need to be her children - she barely knew them and already she loved them and wanted to protect them. "UNCONSCIONABLE!" she roared, leaping at one of the mara as it revealed itself, slamming into it with magic-charged might. Her claws dented its armor, but her magic cut into it like fangs, tearing at it's outside crust as she slammed it into a wall. Wish a snarl, she backslapped it's head, crushing it. She hissed as it's fell light left it, hating it. She turned from it's rubble corpse, snarling. Where were the children? Where had they gone? She had to protect them. She caught the scent of the little ones in the crisp Terra Expanse breeze, but could not see them - they were not where she thought they should be. But one of those stone abomination's was. With a roar that made the mountains themselves shudder, she leapt on the mara, bearing it to the ground. It flailed at her, punching her with it's hands and leaving broken bruises in its wake. Sulu did not even notice. With a gurgled snarl, light began to collect at her face and mouth and, staring right into the Mara's glowing, soulless eyes, she let loose a beam of light. The mara's eyes went out, and the magic animating it floated away, evading her even as she clawwed at it, trying to snatch it from the air. She shimmered, both with the fire of justice and light and with the magic of her healing, repairing the wounds and, perhaps, broken bones she had sustained. She searched for more of the horrible things to destroy - more who threatened her friend and the safety of his children. She found none, and took out her residual ferocity on the stone of the mountain pass with a swipe, leaving deep, magic-carved claw marks in it. "Those foul monstrousities..." she growled, her crest raised and stiff with anger, "How dare they attack the young!" another claw mark appeared in the side of the mountain, "How dare they!" She clawed again and backed away, gasping, as her paw smarted from the impact of the stone. Her magic healed it immediately, but the pain drew her from her frenzy. She looked around. There were, still, no more of the stone things. She could see Samael, and... A chill ran through her, and she fluffed her feathers against it, despite feathers being little good against the chill of fear. Where were the little ones. She became frantic with each moment that went by where they were not obviously there, as if they were her own. They were not. But she loved them - all little orakoi in this harsh world - all the same. She looked at Samael, concerned, and sniffed the air. She could smell them, and there was no harsh smell of blood, so that was a good sign. She walked over to Samael. "Do you see them?" she murmured, questioningly, scanning the rocks around them for answers. She certainly could not. (1546/1500)
Sam looked up from the shattered remains to see Sulu finishing off another of the creatures. What were they? Why were they here? It seemed ridiculous to think they were actually after his young ones. It was more likely that Zarri and Keke had stumbled upon the stone creatures by accident. The Gaili glowered down at the rubble. If they thrived off magic, then surely they didn't even need to eat. They were made of solid stone, so they could surely inhabit even the most desolate of lands... What was their purpose...?
He shook his head. Whatever their business was here, he didn't like it. This was his first encounter with them, but he wouldn't be completely surprised if they started wandering nearer to his home and his clan... In any event, he had to keep them safe. All of them. especially his children.
Zarri huffed and snorted from where she hid, nestled closely with her brother between the crags. The noises the two adults made as they smashed and bashed and struck at the strange rock creatures... It was loud. It rang through the opening where the two youngsters hid, and Zarri was forced to tuck her head against her forearms to keep from mewling pitifully.
But after only a few heartbeats, there was silence. Silence, except for the last few fading crumbles of shattered rocks settling into place. She poked her head out to see the adults standing amidst the rubble. Pappy looked solemnly down at the mess he'd made. When Zarri made smaller messes, she got in trouble... But she supposed it didn't matter, now. With a yip, she scrambled from her concealment, bounding over to the large Gaili with uncoordinated hops and a flutter of wings.
”There,” Sam rumbled in response to Sulu's question as his dark crimson splodge of a daughter leaped out to meet him. he extended a claw to scoop her near. With these things running about, he shouldn't keep them out for long. It would be dangerous. ”I should return to my clan. If you've nowhere safe to return to, you may join me.”
Keke huddled against his sister, hiding his head under her wing to keep the sound out. When it quieted, he nosed her as she hopped out to flutter after papa and sat there for a moment, blinking timidly, before cautiously padding out himself and climbing to the top of a boulder.
Seeing it was papa and safe, he pounced down and joined her in their father's hold, chirping as he gently headbutted his father's chest.” Home, home, home? He was tired now, and home would be good.~~~ “It would be best to return with you.” said Suluksati, thinking about how she had nowhere to go, and how she wanted to make sure the little ones got to where they were going safely. “I am grateful for the offer.” And, finally, she would know where, by Seren's feathers, Samael's clan was. She scanned the surroundings, growling slightly as she thought of the idea that more of these monsters might be out there. “And it would be good to stick together.”
