The second slash did more damage than the first, and Lex was proud of that. "Good recovery!" He cheered, before pulling the gun up into Oliver's face.

"It's too bad you stopped moving, though." His eyes set back to a nearly apologetic look, lips forming a half smile ash he lowered the gun to Oliver's left shoulder and pulled the trigger.

Suddenly seeing the barrel of a gun pointed right at his head stopped the boy's breath just as effectively as the fierce blow he had taken earlier. Oliver tried to move. He really did, but that moment of thinking about his circumstances cost him a moment of action.

For a second he thought he was going to die, but then the gun was lowered, and the force of being hit was quickly followed by the pain. Oliver stumbled backward, but his steps were shaky, and he wasn't sure how he had kept his feet under him at all. He could barely lift the axe after receiving that last attack, and only with an enormous deal of pain. The trainee looked terrified, but whether it was pure fear keeping him rooted to the spot or some sort of hidden courage, he was watching the gun in Lex's hand like he was getting ready for another shot.

Willing Regal back to his totem form, Lex quickly scooped Oliver up into his arms and fussed over him for a second, checking his ribs for any brones. Nothing, that was good. His shoulder was still in place too, thank God. He was fine, just hurt and probably a bit bruised - but he was fine.

"Sorry there, Oliver. Shouldn't have gone that hard." He apologized with a smile, ruffling the teen's hair again. "Off to the infirmary again, I guess." He chuckled, walking off with the trainee to get him all patched up.

The tenseness dissipated, and for a second it looked like Oliver was ready to collapse to his knees.

"Ah, ow..." He muttered as Lex suddenly picked him up. "I-I'm oka--Ow!" The large axe returned to a fossilized tooth on a cord around his neck so he could tentatively explore the shoulder wound with his fingers. It hurt worse than anything he had experienced as a teenager, it was even more painful than when Alistaire had stabbed him in the leg. It was probably the fear shield that made the difference.

"I think I can... uh..." He was going to say he could probably go to the infirmary himself, but he trailed off, distracted by the blood on his fingers and suddenly aware of the shaking in his legs. He had no fear shield. Had things gone on longer, he could have died.

Yikes. Lex hadn't seen the blood. Transferring Oliver to one arm while he picked up his coat and scarf with the other, the garments were quickly thrown on Lex's shoulder and the boy in both his arms again. He really shouldn't have gone so hard on the teen. "Don't let the blood freak you out - you'll be a-okay. Promise." He cooed, opening the doors to the infirmary and nabbing a cot quickly, setting the boy down gingerly and pulling out a roll of bandages.

---

After the boy was bandaged up and given a two packets of asprin to use at a later point if needed, Lex filled out his chart and set it on the cot. Tying his scarf around his neck again, the man looked to his young doppleganger and smiled. "You did good today, Oliver. Got me twice in a row. Wanna train again once you've healed up?"

Oliver's reaction to the injuries was limited to stunned silence, at least until Lex began to fuss over him. Then there were some tears. Little whimpery 'no I'm not crying' tears he managed to sniffle through during the bandaging process. The wound on his shoulder wasn't even a bad one, not since his fear shield held up through most of it, but crying was Oliver's way of handling things when the shock began to lessen.

Once Lex was done, Oliver had wiped away all his tears and seemed more like himself. "O-okay," he replied, looking more like he wanted to avoid another training session at any cost.

s**t, he'd made him cry. s**t s**t s**t s**t s**t. Lex's mouth opened, closed, and opened again as he looked around, anywhere but Oliver's face. Crying bad, crying very bad. Lex couldn't handle the tears and the crying, not even the sniffles.

He'd stopped, and Lex stopped panicking. He was fine. Lex was fine. Oliver was fine. Everything was okay. Good...good.

"Alright, good. Though you may want to try the dummies for a while longer." Lex offered with a joking smile, pulling up a stool next to the teen's cot. "Or maybe next time I won't aim for vital areas."

Oliver nodded, this time hanging his head slightly. Dummies were good, but his biggest weakness was moving around. Sometimes it felt like learning to play ping pong without a partner. It was fluidity of motion that he lacked with the large axe, and the balance of motion and timing required to wield it was not something he could achieve without at least a little coaching.

He glanced up, a frown on his face. "I-I thought you already weren't aiming for vital areas..." His shoulder hurt, but he would live. And his whole chest ached, but that was just bruises. Possibly bruises upon bruises. Nothing vital though.

Whoops. Lex let a little chuckle escape him, adjusting the sheets on Oliver's cot. "Well... I wasn't. Regal, however? Different story. He screams a lot - and a screaming gryphon sounds like a train wreck and thousands of windows breaking, along with concrete drilling and a nursery full of crying toddlers. It's not fun, and he can be a pest to keep in line, some days." He explained, giving the pen the jutted out of his pocket a glare. "He insisted I give you a hard time, so you can thank him for those bruises."

"Oh..." Oliver mumbled quietly, immediately pressing a wrinkle out of the freshly adjusted sheets with nervous fingers. "Jökul doesn't talk much, i-is that normal? I don't even know what he is-"

<> the rumbling voice interrupted.

"... Oh." The kid repeated. "He's a leviathan." Oliver glanced up, his pale eyes still a little watery. "B-but he still doesn't talk much."

"Leviathan... interesting." Lex commented, looking at the necklace around Oliver's throat. Hadn't a Leviathan tried to attack them when they were hunting for rune stone? No, wait, that was a Kraken... and then a Megladon.

"Each weapon is different. Some are quite chatty, others are silent. You have to figure each other out as partners, learn to work as a team."" He gave the boy a pep-talk, unwarranted and slightly hypocritical. Lex and Regal weren't exactly the best of partners, and were still learning about one another - but it was getting better. "Spend some time alone with Jökul."

"He really likes fighting..." Oliver admitted, "sometimes he tells me how to do better." He was sure Jökul would like it better if he actually won fights, but the leviathan never seemed grumpy over the losses... He couldn't see why Jökul would have chosen him in the first place.

But that reminded him of something that had been weighing on his mind, and suddenly it seemed like a question that couldn't wait to be asked later.

"What happens to the weapon if a hunter dies?" Oliver blurted out suddenly. He was clearly concerned, but there was almost a certain grimness hiding among the kid's nervous expressions. A part of him still hadn't given up the idea of accepting death rather than becoming a liability. He really wasn't good at fighting, and was quick to panic when things got rough. He hadn't even been involved in any missions yet. All he was able to do was sit on the island while better hunters than himself fought and suffered.

"He could probably teach you to fight, then." Lex chirped, almost too happy to say it. He enjoyed teaching Oliver, but he needed to learn on his own as well - and from his weapon. Hell, it would help them bond and hopefully make Oliver a stronger Hunter.

Lex's face fell at the question - he'd only heard what happened when a Hunter died, but it was still sad to think about. "Well, the weapon goes back into its tablet form - like how it was when you first picked it up. It loses its powers and bond, and it hurts the weapon much like it would hurt the Hunter if they were still alive. The weapon becomes dormant again, sometimes to never bond with another Hunter. Kinda tragic." He couldn't imagine a weapon going through that, even if it was just Skwakers-

< I resent that >

going dormant to never wake up.

"But don't worry about that! You're not going to die, and Jokul will be just fine!" Right, time to be cheery and happy. Debbie Downer was not a welcome guest in this house.

Oliver hoped Jökul could bond with another hunter, but the leviathan gave no response. For some reason, it was easier for the kid to accept his own death than the thought of his weapon never getting to fight again. How long had Jökul waited in the first place? Would he be able to forgive Oliver for being so weak?

Despite Lex's reassurances, the teen's heart felt heavy. "Yeah..." He agreed quietly as he looked down at his hands, and then his lip quivered. And he wiped his eyes with a loud sniff.

s**t. He was starting to cry again. s**t s**t s**t crap s**t ********. Don't shut down Alexei, don't shut down. Lex put a soft hand on the boy's shoulder, rubbing it a little. "Hey...hey. No need to cry." Lex assured, still trying to prevent his emotional faculties from shutting down.

"You'll be okay, I promise."
