Zarike jumped as he heard the thrumming of the dragons; an instinct trained into him over turns of candidacy. For a brief moment his mind went through the routine of running for the candidate barracks and his robes. The Hatching had started! The response only lasted as long as it took for his surge of emotion to cause the young brown asleep at his side to scrabble to his feet and let out a curious warble.

Ohhh! What is it? Something is happening! What's going on? Is it the others? Peth wiggled and coiled around Zarike's feet as the young man attempted to get out of his chair. Never in Zarike's knowledge had a dragon so young joined in the welcoming hum for a new clutch. Certainly never for the clutch he himself had been born of.

They took a little longer making their way to the Hatching Sands. Peth was bouncing and in a high state of energy over this very new and very exciting experience. Zarike had a hard time containing his own excitement, but for the sake of Peth he tried. They still hadn't found anything specific that triggered Peth's fits. Excitement was unlikely in Zarike's mind. If the brown hatchling wasn't asleep he was excited.

The green was already out and just beginning her charge when they entered the Sands. Peth trilled and reared up on his hind legs, eyes flashing blue and green as Zarike tried to hush him and get them up to the Stands. He figured they might make the first row. If hatchlings could find their bondeds up there still, Peth could make it up to watch. They'd go... and wait for someone to kick them out if they had a problem with it. Neither boy wanted to miss this hatching.

C'tis never missed a hatching if he could help it, they were shaffing hilarious. Having claimed himself a choice spot near the front of the Stands C'tis waited with his arms folded for the appearance of the candidates. He did not have long to wait, here they came trooping out in a line like obedient little wherry chicks follow their mother. Dressed identically as they were it was hard to pick out individuals at first glance but soon enough he spotted Bakarn, coming up to stand next to that friend of his. 'Friend'. C'tis was pretty sharding sure it wasn't just friends or that if it was it wouldn't stay that way for long.... If either of them managed to Impress today of course there would be that long stretch of forced celibacy but hey, perhaps that would only make buried feelings burn stronger.

Or maybe he was reading too much into their relationship, whatever, the first egg was hatching anyway.... "Shards," the blue rider muttered to nobody in particular, "I had marks on that one being brown." He'd got the prematurely hatched one wrong too, he'd guessed blue for that. Tch. Well she was lively at any rate, to say the least. As the pale-splashed hatchling charged across the sands C'tis grinned to himself. "Time to see who's remembered their 'what to do when a baby is out for your blood' lesson." To be fair to the kids down there sometimes there was just nothing you could do, he'd tasted dragons' claws more than once before he finally Impressed Malcarreth and at least one of those times he had done absolutely nothing stupid whatsoever.

Further down the stands and rather higher up S'ol peered around taller riders, trying to see down to the Sands. Where was he squire? He couldn't see well enough to pick him out!

Zaqueth put in, sharing his vision with his rider and tugging his attention to the familiar figure of Deru.

S'ol nodded, chewing his lower lip slightly. Only seven eggs, and so many candidates!... Most people were gong to walk away disappointed today, he just hoped that his squire was one of the lucky ones and-

"Shells!" The first shell of the day had cracked and its occupant was not pleased. Biting his lip harder S'ol willed Deru to get himself out of the way, the last thing he wanted out of today was to see him hurt!

Bakarn was antsy, practically bouncing on his toes in eagerness. One of the eggs he’d been fond of was rocking – this was the big one, the one he’d staked his marks on for bronze. It cracked open to reveal a huge, pale hatchling with a hide that was –

Green. Definitely green.

She was beautiful.

There was no pause between the two thoughts, except for a brief moment of regret for the lost marks – he was zero for two now and he didn’t anticipate his luck getting better. But he’d take a surprise dragon over a pile of marks any day. His eyes were bright and eager as he watched the new-hatched little warrior struggle to her feet, snorting. Still, he was mindful of the warning that the Hear Me Roar egg had given to him: dragons were not tame.

And she reminded them all of that fact a moment later. Bakarn didn’t exactly hold his ground, but neither did he scramble out of the way; running from a dragon like that would only attract her wrath. Instead he found himself moving into the defensive stance he would have taken during combat drills, ready to anticipate an incoming attack and move out of the way.

The green pulled up abruptly just before she hit the group of candidates, prowling first left and then right as if she were inspecting them, little snorts of irritation coming out of her. She kept turning her head from side to side, ensuring that she kept the whole crowd of them in her vision from moment to moment, her jaws snapping. Either she was about to go for the first person who came to claw, or she had an actual plan here...

C'tis couldn't help a bit of a grin as he saw his squire change stance; see, see? Some candidates had brains, and could be trained to use them properly in a crisis! He hadn't needed more proof that his squire was fit for his wing in due course but yep, there it was manifesting in not running around like a wherry with its head cut off.

Not that he was smug or anything.

Bakarn's voice in his ear made Seytev flinch a little, but he glanced over his shoulder and grinned at him. "Course, 'Karn. You, too!" he hissed back, but the crack of a shell splitting caught his attention almost immediately after.

The dragon was...green.

Huge, but green. Seytev leaned forward on his tiptoes for a moment, but the moment he caught sight of the hatchling's dark red eyes, he tensed. And then she surged forward with a squeak-roar, and Seytev moved. It wasn't running, necessarily, but rather getting out of the way, making room for the green to pass between him and Bakarn if she needed to. Other than that, though, he kept his weight on his toes, ready to step aside or pull people out of the line of fire if need be.

The green pulled up before she hit anyone, though, pacing along the lines of Candidates. "Be ready to give her room if she tries to pass!" he said, though not loudly, as warning to his fellow Candidates. Hopefully it would get passed through the group and nobody would get hurt crowding the poor girl.

Deruvene kept his eye on the green as he watched her move, pleased to see that she was certainly a lot healthier in her movements than her brown brother from the Touching. Of course the sickly dragon had still done some damage with biting so it wasn't like he could discount the fact this large green was much more ready to tear into them.

Thankfully no one seemed to be moving around willy nilly to attract attention and that suited well. A hatching without blood on the sands was a good hatching, though if someone did get bit he already had an idea for a recovery basket in mind. Flowers maybe? There wasn't snow after all - maybe some salve. Did he have any salve?

Perhaps he needed to focus. Someone was giving out commands, or a strong suggestion, and he echoed his affirmation. "Sounds good." He could probably lift Alcine up if he actually needed to, his hand still on her shoulder.

At least she didn't go barreling into them. Zarike breathed a sigh of relief as he watched the green prowl... So long as no one did anything stupid there was a good chance she might find hers before any of them, or her siblings, drew her ire.

I don't know what she's so upset about. It's not hard to find yours. I found you so quickly! Even with all those people around! Peth's memories of the day were faded for sure, he didn't remember the chaos or the attack on the Healer unless Zarike brought it up. All he knew was he was first and got first pick. He of course had the best because of that.

While everyone’s eyes were focused on Hear Me Roar, behind her Lashings of Ginger Beer was quite quietly hatching. The egg rolled this way and that very gently, then split, a blue eye peering out of the crack before it cracked open entirely, leaving another sturdy green sitting there, looking a little surprised. The spotted creature shook itself off, damp hide gleaming in the light of glows.

Hear Me Roar didn’t seem to be focusing on the noise - instead, her eyes were drawn to any candidates who might have been foolish enough to leave jewellery on… or move too fast.

“…kraaaaaark?” her head tilted to one side, although there was something a little odd about her vocalisations - at least, to anyone who was used to hearing young dragons.

Son of a blind watch wher she was testing them for something. He was almost sure of it when the large, painted green came up short and snapping, and he couldn't help figure it was a good thing there were healers to be had if they were found wanting. He wasn't sure she'd stop at a few bite marks, this lady . No she was one to go down in legend for putting someone off the sands forever, or into the ground. A finality he still rather dreaded. He licked dry lips and glanced at Alcine and the other boy that had fled to her, whose name did not spring to mind at. This harried moment.

-No one who touched your shell doubts you... No one wise...- He thought, though he kept these thoughts to himself.

The odd voice almost got dismissed in the adrenaline of watching Roar very closely, and he barely noticed the second green for trying to avoid the teeth and claws of the first. Mauling was not the sort of attention he wanted from a dragon.

That's not normal... is it? Not the behavior of the young green of course. That was just fine in Jasiline (and Sanuyeth's opinions!) but the creaky high pitched cries. Well, it had been a while since she'd been around newly hatched dragons, but she couldn't remember any of Sanuyeth's siblings making noises like that. They'd all sounded properly dragonic from the get go from what she remembered.

Was she calling for someone, or waiting for someone to respond? Was that sound...a name? Deruvene didn't think any of the Candidates were enough of a deadglow to actually approach and attempt something, though her strange sounds were making him nervous in a way that he wanted to go and give her a hug. Her eyes needed to calm down though, no way he was going while she was red and angry and likely to depart an arm from him.

"Ooohhh...." He did make an audible sound at the hatching of the second egg, the faint crack producing another green. Adorable, blue eyed! This was the egg that had been so happy to see him if he could recall and therefore he was very happy to see it!

The breath she'd been holding whooshed out as the green veered off before she hit the candidates. She twisted her fingers together anxiously as the young dragon prowled the line of candidates, hopefully the green was just looking them all over. The candidates at least seemed ready to handle the situation, many of them being alert or slowly moving out of her way. Running around like an idiot didn't seem like the wisest choice, but Vanavia wasn't sure she'd have been able to do anything other than stand there stupidly in the face of a charging dragon.

A small motion caught her eye and she noticed another green dragon had hatched. This one at least seemed calmer, if a little surprised. Vanavia was a little disappointed she'd missed seeing the dragon actually hatching, but there were still others left. This one was spotted instead, but Vanavia was more concerned with her not charging at anyone.

The noise of the paler green drew her attention back. What an odd noise. Baby dragons sounded awfully strange, but the way she tilted her head to one side was awfully cute. What did she want though? Did the call mean anything other than just a reason to make noise?

She hadn’t actually barreled into them. Yevalee relaxed slightly, still tracking her with his eyes, and ready to get out of her way if needed, but being tense would just use energy. What are you looking for? He wondered watching her snap at the air.

And he was zero to three on his bets wasn’t he? Lashings hatched gently, splitting open and spotted. Rather nicely spotted hide and a rather pretty green.

Ooh… that was not quite right. Yevalee had heard hatchings, the last one had been bloody and the noise the green made was not like anything he had heard before. And what was she looking for? He kept still, just watching the pair

Hear Me Roar hissed as her eyes focused on Keralder for a moment, as if she could tell what he was thinking. She prowled forwards towards him, and then back - and then charged again, making a brief feint into the crowd before dodging back and prowling her way around, as if she wanted to know who would run just as much as she wanted to keep them all in a tight group.

Lashings of Ginger Beer trilled cheerfully, the green seeming to get her bearings and barrelling towards her sister - who didn’t seem to notice the impending collision until a green hurricane hit her, the two of them rolling over… and straight into anyone in their path. Hear Me Roar was screaming a high-pitched wail of rage, though Lashings of Ginger Beer seemed a great deal more excited then unhappy.
